Hey Odie03! Yeah, I've seen it before and I really like it! I used it to calculate out my calorie intact in 10lb increments of weight loss (so each time I lose 10 lbs I have my adjusted calorie intake). It's working for me so far. I don't follow it to the exact calorie, but it gives me a general guideline to follow. I like it because it allows me to plan my higher calorie days for days I know I would be tempted anyhow. This way I can be on my diet and not feel deprived. Example- yesterday was a 2200 calorie day for me whereas most days of the week I aim for 1800 or so. So I planned out what I was going to eat during the day very carefully and Friday night my BF and I went out and had pizza and beer. I put in all my numbers and I came out to 2200 calories exactly. How awesome is that? Before I would have just figured I had blown it anyway and gone completely overboard. The staggering is good for the metabolism and for my cravings :) keeps me on track. Thanks for posting the site again.

Original Post by kae03: My goal in the next couple months is 200lbs and I am going on a cruise in Aug- I can assure you I am going to be wearing a bikini/tankini thing (not thong, 'cause even if I was a stick, that just ain't how I roll.) Of course I have cellulite and jiggle and all that jazz, like most humans. If someone thinks I look bad in a bikini or shouldn't be wearing it, bully for them- they don't have to look. All I know is I am going to kick it on the beach, have a good time, drink something with a little umbrella in it, and anyone who wants to hate on me can take a flyin' leap :) (This isn't aimed at you Kae, just sayin') The idea of working towards "perfection" is problematic- there IS no such thing as "perfect"- no matter what we look like- there will ALWAYS be someone who thinks something is "off" or "needs improvement". Once you realize that it's game no one can win- you learn to take a step back and just BE. Beside, if anyone makes fun of me while I'm at the beach, I'll just threaten to beat the crap out of them- a 5'11", 200lb woman can cause some serious chaos. :) |

Hmm.. that makes sense. I always eat a small bowl of frozen mango pieces after dinner (now that it is hot outside). It's sweet, but only 90 cal. I find that once I do that, even if I eat early- around 4:30 or 5pm, I don't get hungry any more. Maybe I just got used to eating that last thing and like the article you read suggests, my body shut down hunger mode 'till morning. Groovy |

I don't know where you are travelling, but if you are in California, there are Whole Foods markets everywhere- you could always go to their deli counter for lunch. They have all kinds of heathy options. If you go to Google maps and enter your current address and select "search nearby" you could search for "health food" or "deli" or "SoupPlantation" or some other such heathy option in your current vacinity. G'luck! |

Exercise wise I am doing 60 min of elliptical (i have REALLY bad knees- played BBall/ACL surgery on one, car accident/busted PCL the other) at least 5-6 days a week and the day I don't do that I walk the dog for an hour. These calorie and AMR counters/calculators have been posted in other places on the forum and I'm going to repost them here because they've been REALLY helpful setting reasonable calorie intake/expenditure goals: http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calc ulator.htm http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_loss.php I've lost over 50lbs in the past, but gained back 30 over the following year because I hit a MAJOR wall/plateau and couldn't get past it and pretty much gave up. In retrospect I believe it was because I wasn't taking in enough calories AND i was working out over 90 min (sometimes 180 min!) a day doing cardio. My body went into starvation mode and I didn't know it. This time around these sites helped me set realistic calorie targets based on my workouts and I will recalculate every 10 lbs I loose. That way I can loose it and keep it off AND be healthy! |

Guiness is 125 cal per 12oz bottle and you really can't chug it- darker, thicker ales might be good because you aren't as likely to pound 4 of them and not realize it. When I drink lager (American style) beers, they are so "thin" that I can drink 500-1000 calories of beer EASY before I realize what I just did!! |

Original Post by always_hungry: Hey Always! Dude, if had only known about that scholarship money...how awesome is that? I'm with you on the clothes thing. I live in short sleeved shirts or 3/4s sleeves (which are really 1/2 on me!) Tall women want clothes that fit, damnit! As someone noted earlier- when sizes get bigger, then get wider- not longer. I think fashion designers create for skinny tall people and short fat people and no tall big people :( |

Original Post by liz13jhawk: Liz13- I think you might be right- I just realized the other day that with my calorie intake at 1600 and working out 1 hr or more a day-usually burning between 500-1000 calories, my calorie deficit was usually 1,000 or more a day. I am tweaking it to make sure my deficit doesn't exceed 1,000- toning down the work outs and on days that I work out a lot, eat just a little more. I think this is the problem I ran into the last time I lost weight (lost 50lbs- went from 250+ to 200), I worked out really hard and only ate 1500 calories, so I DID lose weight but when I plateaued- there was nothing extra I could do to get out of it- I couldn't safely eat less (though I tried and I think that threw me into starvation mode) and I couldn't work out more than I was without injuring myself. The frustration of not being able to lose any more weight lead to readopting previous poor eating habits and I ended up gaining back 30 lbs. I think this time I am going to keep closer track of my BMR and readjust it every time I lose 5-10lbs and make sure my calorie intake doesn't dip too low- even if I don't feel like eating much. Going to keep working out but going to save the 1 hour, 1,000 calorie elliptical sessions for the last 15lbs. Thanks for the head's up- I appreciate the advice!! :) Incidentally, I wonder how many other people feel this way- I am VERY goal oriented- when I set my mind on something- I'll bust my ass to get there/achieve it. Dieting is the same way- the last time I was deep into diet/workout mode and had lost a significant amount of weight I found myself taking pride in how little I wanted to eat and how I could get by on 1300 or so calories (ok, I'm 5'11, so you gotta figure that isn't good). It's a hard mentality to shake- when you start dieting you look at your calorie goal for the day as upper limit that you try not to EXCEED. As you start loosing and your appetite shrinks, you start looking at it as an upper limit you don't have to REACH. (i.e., it's ok to eat 1400 instead of the 1600, which may not be the case, depending on your BMR). I think if I had 1) tracked BMR changes with weight loss and expenditure through exercise 2) realised that my calorie intake was SO much lower than my BMR, I would have been able to maintain my weight loss instead of hitting the wall so hard. And it is SO hard to not take pride in eating fewer calories than my body needs! I have to tell myself- It's not healthy! Don't do it! |

Hey Annissamarie! First thing- for shoes it's all about zappos.com- you can find every size in the world and free shipping, awesome! Second- yeah, you sound like me. I'm shooting for 180 and will reassess once I get there. When I was 200, I was a size 14 and I figure I would be about 10/12 at 180, which is just peachy for me :) And I always wondered about the big and tall shop thing too!! When I wanted to find professional clothes I was about to throw myself out a window!!! Suits were either 1) beyond too small 2) insanely expensive 3) butt ugly or 4) some combination of the previous. Please SOMEONE open a big and tall women's store where we can find professional & sports clothes of decent quality, pleeeeeeease? |

Jen24724- totally! My mom is an ex model - 5'7" and 120 (in her 50s!!) and my dad is 6'1" and prob about 270-290ish. I'm build EXACTLY like my dad-look like him, am tall like him, and I'm big like him!! :( I know I will never be like my mom, and while I talk about losing weight with her occasionally, I would never discuss numbers because I pretty much weigh TWO of her! (tribute to the genitic joke that is my legacy- my younger brother looks exactly like my mom- light hair and RAIL thin- he's about 6'2" and 130ish soaking wet). Le Sigh. |

Luckily for me, I've lost the tolerance i had in high school and college. I can no longer drink a 5th of vodka and not expect to suffer tremendously the next day. So, 2-3 drinks is my world now. I'm with ya laallisonra, we have to do the things we like- just in moderation (thse days for me it's more about avoiding the bathroom than avoiding weight gain!). Also, most of my diet concious friends drink diet coke and jack (though personally I think it tastes like paint thinner). I find drinking something like a bloody mary (which i love) slows things down a little- can't chug that like I would a cosmo! It's a winner all around- little less drinking- fewer headaches, save some $, keep losing weight. What REALLY has made the biggest difference for me is no longer drinking the beer my boyfriend buys (though I'll still steal a sip of his) during the week. If I have one, I am likely to have another, and after that it's like- "whatever! i'll just drink whatever I want! and i'm kinda hungry now...wonder what's in the fridge?...." If I avoid the first one, I avoid all the others and the subsquent snacking. |

ahhh vintage clothes- that would be AWESOME! Actually, anything not from Lane Bryant would be great. They're great any all, but i really want to be able to buy things that are cute (and cheaper!!!) in other places. Scuba diving! I suppose I could do that now, but I would feel like a neoprene sausage and I would need an ungodly number of weights to weigh me down in the water! I was certified as a teenager and I'd love to do it again. Unselfconciously get involved in sports like sea kyacking (sp?) and hiking. Going out for a sexy, fun night on the town. I second Indi's idea for cute lingerie :) Though I would prob. cut to the chase and hit up Fredrick's (since I am near Hollywood and all!) I am Sooooooooooo looking forward to a "1", can you say P-A-R-T-Y? woot! |

Kristinedaqueen, I second a little meat on the bones- gotta have something for the boyfriend to grab on to ;) Can't shake my thang if nothing moves! I posted in the main forum about these books, but i'll mention 'em here too- In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto and The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals both by Michael Pollan. I am ordering them to read now (so yeah, haven't read 'em yet) but they look really good. Really puts the whole diet nuttiness and modern food issues into perspective. One thing the author suggests to do when going grocery shopping is to shop like your great grandma is with you (don't do this when you go clothes shopping though ;) ). Anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food (i.e. Cheese whiz!)- don't eat! For everything else, eat what you need- not too much, and try to eat lots (mostly) plants! (Lucky for me, my great-grandma was Italian, so she'd be familiar with pizza, and beer has been around forever, so I'm covered there!) |

laasllisonra- have you checked your body frame & BMI?? While there is plenty of latitude, being 5'11" and 140 is a BMI of 19.5! If you have a super slight frame, that may work for you, but that is pretty dang close to underweight- especially if you want any muscle mass. I'm SURE (bet my life on it sure) that you are COMPLETELY "hawt" as we say in L.A. :) Check your percentage of body fat and see where you need to be to maintain a healthy weight. 140 just seems really, really low for a fellow Amazon :) Siiigh..... on an side/semi-related note, it took me a long time to focus on my health because I wanted to resist the diet-obession that American girls are initiated into (at birth, it would seem!) Instead I went in the opposite direction- you say I should be stick thin? Screw you!! I'll eat whatever I want! :P~~~ Well, needless to say, all did not go as planned. I still hate the diet industry, but instead of going to the opposite extreme of not caring; I am going to care, but not for the reasons they tell me I should! (Yes, of course part of it is I want to look sexy, but i think sexy is me at size 12 or 14, 'cause I WILL drink beer and eat pizza once in a while, damn it!) If you don't agree- great- I kinda don't give a damn. Just a reminder of how women are damned if we do and damned if we don't, check this article I ran across today about how models that are TOO skinny are being photoshopped to be FATTER! I know is says they want to avoid the "skinny as death" controversy, but to me it seems like Vogue/Conde Nast want the skinny without the the things that come with it- like jutting bones, stick-like limbs, sallow cheeks, etc., which is what happens when you are adhering to fashion-industry standards. Is no woman perfect enough to make it to the cover of a magazine without editorial help? It's a game you can't win!!! Be beautiful in your way! There is no ONE kind of beautiful!!! |

Indi, me too! When i was 200, i went to a halloween party dressed as a vampire catholic school girl (don't ask :)) and I was beating guys off with a stick! It was AWESOME. I was 180ish in high school and I thought i was SO fat back then- I was convinced i was just horribly obese and why bother with exercise/nutrition since i was just FAT. How sad is that? I had no concept of BMI or body frame or what should be normal for my height, I thought all girls should be around 130ish. I remember in statistics class (happened to be all girls) we had to all enter our weights on the chart...there was this big cluster around 120-135 and then there was this lonely outlier waaaaay out near 200. THAT was a real confidence builder!) Now I look at my pictures and realise that I was healthy, just bigger than the cheerleaders. So I figure 180 is good place to land (after all, at 10 years out from graduation, most of those cheerleaders don't weigh what they did in high school anyhow. :) ) Mrdudek-I did have a friend who was about 5'10" and she went from 180 to 155 and she was SKINNY. I mean model skinny. I don't have a pic for you, but if your frame is slender, you would be healthy. If your frame is larger (i hear measuring your wrist is a good indicator, if the circumference is 6.5 inches or more you have a large frame- but check that) you might actually be TOO skinny. check up on that. |

I concur that it's impossible unless you ate around 18,000 calories that you put on 5 lbs overnight! Like the other commenter said, it is most likely fluid retention. I think it is important to understand why you binged...did you starve yourself the day before or did something happen? What precipitated the binge? Understanding that is the most important thing. |
