It is deadly and many persons die due to its complications - maybe its not that widely mentioned in the media and doesn't seem to get the attention other mental illnesses get.  I mean recently it made the headlines when the Brazillian model died, but before that I think the last time I heard on the news of someone dieing from the disease was Karen Carpenter and how many eons ago was that?  There are some celebrities who have tried to get the word out on its dangers, but I think it is one of those diseases that just doesn't get the attention it needs to to help the sufferers and help family and friends to get these people the help they need and to see the signs and warnings.

I see some folks post on this site that I pray will get help - and I pray they have family or friends who will intervene and get them the help they need.

Anorexia nervosa is easier to detect that bulimia nervosa.  When the general public thinks eating disorder, they think of anorexia, when statistically bulimia is more common.  Signs of bulimia nervosa might be difficult to recognize, because weight may fluctuate rather than steadily decreasing as in anorexia nervosa.  Usually anorectics are underweight or losing weight, but bulimics can be underweight, overweight, or anywhere in between.

The pictures are fake.  The anorectics visiting this post will not benefit from them.

Anorexia nervosa is not the most deadly mental illness.  Bulimia nervosa is worse.  Also, the majority of anorectics who die commit suicide as a result of depression.  In other words, it is a mental cause rather than physical.  As mentioned before, life spans can be shortened by the disease, but suicide is the most common.

For the basal metabolic rate estimation to be accurate, several assumptions must be true at the time of measurement: absence of gross muscular activity - i.e. you MUST be resting, and your muscles MUST be relaxed post-absorptive state - i.e. 12 hours or more after the last meal thermal neutrality - i.e. ambient temperature variations should be minimal emotional disturbance must be minimal, as studies have shown that emotional upset, particularly apprehension, may result in rises in BMR of from 15–40 percent awake state, as sleep tends to depress BMR by approximately 10 percent If you want to read more about BMR variability, J.V.G.A. Durnin from the University of Glasgow Glasgow, Scotland, has published a very interesting paper on this topic, entitled BASAL METABOLIC RATE IN MAN.

Wait, so isn't stress supposed to increase cortisol, a hormone that tells your body to STORE fat?

Just something to add:  not having ENOUGH sleep will DECREASE your metabolism by up to 30%, which is something we DEFINITELY don't want.

Just wondering, why is your screenname "washboard ribs"? That's really disturbing and in my opinion, sounds anorexic.

I would worry about neither being hot or being cold. It won't make much of a difference, either way, and it's senseless to sweat or shiver just to burn a few extra cals. Assuming you are healthy enough to lose weight, just concentrate on calories eaten vs. calories burned.

I was anorexic for a few months, and then regained healthy weight, which I maintained for awhile.  Lately I've been bingeing horridly.  I want to get back to my not-quite-anorexic-but-still-lean weight.

You feel guilty about the calories in your sugarless gum.

You consider gum a dessert after a meal of coffee.

You've to stop using flavored lip gloss because you think something tasting that good can't possibly be calorie-free.

You spend an extra hour in the grocery store checking and double checking every box of coffee and artificial sweetener to make sure they still don't have any calories.

You can't eat in public anymore because your habits are too weird.

You find yourself waiting impatiently for the commercials while watching TV, just so you can do your sit-ups.

You're so accustomed to scanning calories that you unconciously check your water.

You get full off of water and one rice cake.

You learn that the average human swallows eight spiders in his or her lifetime and your first thought is, how many grams of protein are in eight spiders?

You consider sex just because you think it'd be a good workout.

You're famous within your family for making the banana cream pie, yet you've no idea how it tastes.

You think about food more than about your spouse.

You go to sleep at night think about what you'll eat the next day.

You spend hours upon hours viewing recipes online knowing damn well you'll never make any of them.

Yes.  I promise day after day that I'll stop.  Tomorrow I will eat healthily and not stray from my meal plans.

I reached my goal weight a long time ago and had been maintaining it, but recently I've been compulsively overeating.  I've binged 26 times in three months and gaint 22 pounds.  I hope that since I gained the weight quickly, I can lose it quickly.  I know why I overeat, but that doesn't stop me.  I go all or nothing, and if I screw up I just don't stop eating.  It's awful, really.  I understand what y'all are feeling.  And as for the social thing, it's tough.  I don't want them to think I'm undereating again, (which I would like to do, minus the criticism) but it's hard since I eat just to keep suspicions low.  My goal is twofold:  get back to my happy weight ASAP, and eat alone so that I can eat as little as I want while still being safe with calorie defecit.
