Weight Loss Can't stop starving myself Sep 25 2008

it's interesting what tsanday said, but i haven't heard of that and i think my nutritionist would disagree, but everyone's different!  i used to heavily restrict during the week and then eat whatever i wanted on the weekends and it lead to weight gain and a LOT of stress.

the only way i've gotten out of this is to be METICULOUS about eating regularly.  i started out aiming for only 1200 calories (that's still too low, but you don't want to overwhelm yourself).  i would eat every 3 hours to keep my metabolism up.  i didn't really have "meals" and would just have snacky type things.  a typical day for me would be something like:

9:00 - total cereal and orange juice - 210

11:00 - sandwich with one slice no sugar bread, turkey, cheese, and mustard - 210

1:00 - fruit snacks - 80

3:00 - piece of fruit (apple or banana, usually) - 60-100

5:00 - another sandwich - 210

6:00 - bag of goldfish - 140

8:00 - pb sandwich - 220

right before bed - a mini smores granola bar as a treat - 70

it's still hard - when i eat like that i feel like i'm eating ALL THE TIME even though it's low calorie.  but yeah, i would log everything in a notebook i carried around all day and would subtract down from my total instead of counting up.  sometimes it was frustrating to get to the end of the day and have extra calories, but i would usually get a frozen yogurt or something.  it's going to be hard, but it just takes a conscious effort to get things back under control.  also, you might want to consider talking to a nutritionist and they can help you set up a meal plan.  if you're in college (i figure you might be if the 87 in your name is your birth year), they probably have lots of resources if you search them out.

let us know how it goes!

Games & Challenges !College people looking to lose 20lbs for Christmas vacation! Sep 25 2008

hi! i'm a junior and my weight has fluctuated from 130-160 (that wasn't all gaining - i started at about 140, lost to 130, gained to 150, gained to 160, lost to 140, gained to 150) since i entered college.  i'm an art/bio major, so i'm pretty busy but i love it.  my biggest challenge is that i struggle with moderation in my eating - i either binge or have a really hard time making my goal.  i'm trying to focus on having a steady daily intake and eating every few hours as well as incorporating more healthy foods and exercising more.

Age: 19 - holy cow my birthday is NEXT TUESDAY, i'm practically ancient already, gah.

Height: 5'10

Pant Size: 4-6

Start Weight: 158 lbs.

Current Weight: 150 lbs.

Christmas Goal: 135 lbs.

so yeah, i only have 15 i want to lose (i looked too thin at 130), but i'd love to do it before christmas break!

oh, i get something really similar

i usually get the you-pick-two and get 1/2 of a smoked turkey breast sandwich without mayonnaise on sourdough (slightly less cal than the country white it comes on) and a bowl of chicken noodle soup (100 cals).  i get an apple for my side (60-80 because they're usually pretty small) and i drink unsweetened tea cut half and half with water.

i eat the soup there and take the sandwich home for later!

i'm entirely obsessed with panera - it's a great place to study!

Fitness Anyone Zumba? Class or DVDs? Jun 02 2008

OH i LOVE zumba classes!!

i'm fairly in shape, but i always break into a heavy sweat.  i've never done a dvd, just the hour long classes.  i'd recommend getting a friend and doing the class at the gym!  it's a ton of fun.  i used to be a dancer, so i don't find many of the steps difficult, but sometimes if there's one that stumps me, i just move/thrash around as much as i can.  the bigger you move, the more you burn, right?  :) lots of people end up doing the kick-n-thrash if they don't get it, i wouldn't worry about getting a dvd to "learn the moves" - plus, they're usually different from song-to-song and class-to-class!

good luck with zumba!!

since you're in college, do your gyms have fun workout classes?  our gyms have at least 10 every day with things like kick-boxing, zumba, spinning, step aerobics, "butts, guts, and thighs", pilates, yoga, and one with weights and cardio called pump and...  something that i forget the name of. :D

that might be worth looking into!  the zumba one is especially fun and our classes for that are always completely filled with girls!! you could probably convince a friend to go with you.  oh, and even if you hate "repetitive machines" at the gym, you could always plan to go while a good television show is playing.  i used to go to the gym and watch the office (ack, sometimes i would end up laughing and almost fall off my treadmill), lost, and america's next top model (talk about inspiration to keep going!!!)

good luck!

well, i used to have the same problem.  i really just let myself eat as much as i wanted for a little while and i naturally got tired of it.  i still crave it occasionally, but i've realized that its much more of a mental thing.  i eat it every once in a while, but its not an addiction anymore.

if you're really concerned about weight gain, that might not be the best plan, but its how i beat the pb monster.

good luck!

this is along the same lines as the popsicle/fudgebar idea...

for things that i tend to go overboard on, i usually try and go ahead and put them in servings.  i used to eat cereal all the time and i would eat three bowls with milk before really knowing what i was doing.  those calories can really add up quickly!

it doesn't work for ice cream, probably, but its great for cereal, goldfish, chips, raisins, and other snacky foods.  just get a bunch of snack baggies and a scale/measuring cup and you're good to go!  its a lot easier to stop if you only have x amount.

eta: you can chew gum, maybe?  its not the best habit, but it keeps me from mindlessly snacking a lot of the time.

Fitness question for people in college Apr 30 2008

at my university, we have two really nice gyms, swimming pools, basketball and tennis courts, rock climbing walls, etc.  there are also "club" teams for just about every sport (i'm on club cross country) you can imagine where you just sign up/no tryouts as well as intermural teams that play each other on a recreational level.  we have tons of dance groups as well as a few dancing classes at the gym.  oh, the classes at the gym are great.  if you like dance, you should look in to zumba!  its really simple dance moves (like, booty dancing moves!) done aerobically and its just tons of fun.  they also have yoga, pilates, kickboxing, water aerobics, step, absolution, butts, gutts, and thighs, i don't even know what else!

hm, aside from that, there are always just tons of people who run/play pickup games of various sports.  i left a note on the bathroom mirror my freshman year to find a running partner and it worked great!

gosh, like everyone else, i LOVE cereal.  i'll probably come back with a dozen others later, but here's something i like:

if you take grape nuts and milk and add a little bit of honey and cut up apples and put it in the microwave, it is DELICIOUS.  its sort of like oatmeal, but more flavorful.  i used to eat it during the winter all the time.  yum!

i just ate almost an entire box of raisin bran crunch the other day.. oops!

that's so odd that you felt sick, caitling - i did, too!

ah well, there's always next year to make a better choice!

Foods What's your sweet fix? Apr 30 2008
04:44 (UTC)

sugar free jello puddings!  i love the double chocolate, but lots of the flavors are good - only 60 calories

also, i eat these little s'mores bars from target every night for a sweet fix/to get me closer to the goal amount of calories.  they're 70 cals each, but even better are the fiberone chocolate granola bars for 140 cals.

dark chocolate is always good, as is diet hot chocolate (if you don't necessarily need to chew!)

hm, since a lot of people recommended things like cereal and granola, i'd suggest putting them in individual snack baggies so that she has a portable serving size.  that way she can take them on the go and not overeat from the box!

its a really cute idea!

Young Calorie Counters Milkshake? Apr 29 2008

okay, i don't want to sound awful/depressing, but i don't know if i would get it.  i'm also in recovery from an ED and sometimes when i try to eat "bad" foods, it really triggers me to want to start restricting, so i avoid that situation.

it happened to me last week - i ate some pizza and i thought i would be okay, but it ended up really messing my head up for a few days.

if you think you can handle it, i would say definitely go for it, but if there's any chance it would trigger you, i'd say save it for another day.  it all depends where you are in recovery mentally.  of course, one milkshake isn't going to mess up any weight loss, but just be cognizant of mental ramifications.

good luck!! (the flavors sound delicious and really interesting!)

Young Calorie Counters How bad is this, nutrition wise??? Apr 29 2008
23:48 (UTC)
2

eh, i don't think its that bad.  if you're playing soccer, you must be pretty active, so i wouldn't worry about it too much.  if you are still worried, just have a smallish serving and a nice big salad with a good but low cal dressing.

i'm a cross country runner and i eat 4-5 meals a day at about 300 cals each (a few 100 cal snacks, too), so this is a little higher than what i would eat for a typical "meal," but i would just subtract it out somewhere else to compensate.

Young Calorie Counters what foods do you eat daily? Apr 28 2008
23:35 (UTC)

every day i eat apples, some sort of fake meat product (boca burger, gardenburger, quorn, etc), whole wheat bread, cheese, and mini smores granola bars for a bedtime treat!

i often (almost everyday) eat: total cereal, hello kitty fruit snacks (80 cals/package), sf chocolate pudding (60 cals/serving)

eta: tons of water everyday!  i used to drink a diet sunkist everyday, but thank goodness i've gotten off of that habit!

physically:  taller than i am, skinny, good fashion sense, i'm not that picky though

personality: smart, charismatic, proud of me, supportive, funny, willing to act like a kid, willing to go out occasionally but not a total party animal, likes reading, is geeky.

my boyfriend now doesn't meet all of these - his fashion sense is atrocious! - but i still like him a lot.  most important to me is the connection, that he likes me FOR ME, and that he's supportive of everything i do.  we have fairly different interests (i like art and "indie" things, he likes computer games) but we compromise and it works out fine.  plus, we learn a lot from each other!

i dated a boy a year younger than i am for a few years and i never had any issue with it.  it was a little weird when i went off to college and he was a senior, but he would just come up and stay for the weekend, so it was fun for a while.

now, i'm dating a boy 2 years older than i am who is about to graduate college!  i feel like we're sort of in different spaces right now, but i'm hoping it will work out for a bit longer! :)

i'd talk to your friends about it.  its not really a very friendly thing.  otherwise, try not to let it bother you and keep reminding yourself about all of the incredible qualities he has whenever you feel confused or down about it.  have you talked to your boyfriend about it?  what does he think?

Young Calorie Counters The Ultimate ED Tool? Apr 28 2008

i strongly agree with red herring.

counting calories and wanting to be healthy isn't a problem at all - its when the calories become your life and prevent you from normal, everyday activities that it becomes a disorder.  i am sure that some people are using this site to maintain their behaviors, but there are some people who genuinely want to change the way they think about food, exercise, and nutrition.  (i'm one of those people!)

honestly, i've seen quite a few threads like this in the short time that i've been here, and its a little discouraging.  i guess i'm warning that sometimes, comments like that can be ostracizing to someone who might fall under that category.  someone on the brink of wanting to recover or not could take that as, "yeah, see, i'm not worth this" or a million different things.

i think the point of this website is health and support, so we should give it to all.

that being said, the pro-ana movement is difficult for me to understand.  i am in recovery and i just can not see how some people seem to really love their choice.  i've read many comments like, "its my body, i can do what i want with it" but the point is that eating disorders aren't something to be proud of in my opinion - they're isolating and awful and humiliating and weakening.  so yeah, i just don't get it.

erm, sorry for the ramble.

my name is lake, i'm a student at unc-chapel hill as a biology/art major.  i have a wonderful homelife and i adore my family and friends.  i'm planning on graduating in two years and going to grad school for cellular biology and working for the cdc one day.  i'm also quite interested in graphic design and i love handdrawn illustrations and typography!  i'm thinking about applying for a design school around here (mostly just to see if i'd get in, ha).  i also really enjoy neil gaiman novels and independent music and movies.  i love fashion and rooting through vintage/thrift stores, too!

eating-wise, i've struggled with eating disorders in the past, but i am actively in recovery right now.  i've done some browsing around here and sometimes feel like there is a bit of hostility or suspicion around those with eating disorders.  my main goal is to reset my body to know what "healthy/normal" eating is - not restricting, not bingeing.  if i lose weight, that'd be fine since i'm right in the middle of "normal" range, but if i maintain while getting stronger and healthier, that's also quite okay for me!

hey, micjones!  your son and i have the same birthday! (i'm just 19 years older, ha)
