Depending on the cake mix, and what you have to add in- you can use Eggbeaters instead of real eggs and applesauce or pumpkin instead of the oil. You could use a low-cal whipped topping as the frosting, and also top with fresh fruit. Or, make them into cupcakes, and serve them with some whipped topping and fruit on top. |

| Foods | Healthy ThanksGiving Desserts I can buy? | Nov 23 2009 18:02 (UTC) |

Just a question- when you were invited to this dinner, did the host request that you bring a "healthy" dessert? Or just "please bring dessert?" If the request was not specifically to bring something healthy, you are probably better off buying a regular 'ol pumpkin or apple pie or something. A lot of people (myself included!) use Thanksgiving as a cheat day, and I would not be stoked if it came time for yummy dessert and my only options were fruit and some organic soybean cheesecake or something. Perhaps bring a nice fruit plate for yourself and others who want a healthy option, but also a traditional dessert as well- just my two cents :) |

| Weight Loss | Any brides trying to slim for their wedding...? | Nov 16 2009 18:26 (UTC) |

I am getting married July 2010, and would like to lose about 20lbs by then. I went and tried on dresses for the first time yesterday, and found my dress! It's perfect! I am going back to get fitted in late January, so I want to try to lose as much weight as possible by then. That'll be fun with the holidays, haha! Good luck everyone! :) |

One of my favorites is: saute up some onions and garlic in a pan, add in fresh green beans, a little salt and pepper and that's it! You could add those crunchy fried onions on top if you wanted it to be more like a traditional green bean casserole..... |

| Foods | Anyone else obssesed with cooking now that you are counting calories? | Oct 06 2009 20:29 (UTC) |

Totally! My new thing is taking "bad things" like cookies, brownies, muffins, etc, and finding yummy, healthier ways to make them. Also, when I cook my own meal, I feel so much better having made it myself and knowing exactly what went into it. That way, I feel like I can make meals that might not be deemed healthy if you ordered it in a restaurant, but since I can tweak the ingredients at home, I can make it healthy and still yummy. Now that it's Fall and getting colder out, I want to start experimenting with "healthier" comfort foods....mashed potatoes and gravy, mac & cheese, crock pot recipes, etc. |

| Weight Loss | burning calories is vs cutting them | Oct 06 2009 20:21 (UTC) |

Well, about 5 years ago, I dropped 20 lbs by working out 5 days a week (45 mins on the elliptical plus abs, weight training, etc- about 1 1/2 hours in the gym) During that time I ate pretty much whatever I wanted. Didn't feel like I was restricting or deprived at all. When I am working out all the time, I want to eat healthier anyway. I didn't count calories, and the weight just fell off. Fast forward to today: trying to lose 20-30 lbs, but I hate going to the gym, so I figured that I would start counting calories, in addition to taking walks every day, an occasional class at the gym, etc. Well, I've been on that program for over a month, and I've lost about two pounds. Plus, I'm hungry and angry that I can't enjoy my food. Conclusion? Successful weight loss needs to be a combination of eating better and working out more. Some people might be able to lose weight by counting calories alone, but not for me. So, it's back to the gym. Blah :) |

Well, normally I just kinda plan to splurge a little (sometimes a lot :) during the holiday season, and not worry about the few extra pounds until after the New Year, but this year I really have to be more careful. I am getting married in July, so I have dress shopping to do, so I really need to stay on my weight loss plan. However, that being said, that does not mean that I will be sitting there on Thanksgiving or Christmas eating a plain salad while everyone else has delicious holiday food. On the actual holidays, I will give myself a free pass to enjoy a nice dinner with my family and eat whatever I want. Two big meals aren't gonna kill me, and I plan to enjoy them! My plan is to try to avoid the other "holiday" treats.....Halloween candy for all of October; pumpkin pies and cookies and other evils baked by neighbors, or sent by clients to our office. The holidays are an excuse to graze your way from Oct-Dec, but I am not gonna do it this year! I am really going to try to be smart this year :) |

| Foods | Benefiber, does your body actually use it like fiber from foods or is it a waste of money? | Sep 28 2009 18:06 (UTC) |

I just started taking Benefiber recently, just to keep things "flowing," if ya know what I mean :) I wasn't having any real issues before, but I do feel like I an perhaps a little more regular now? It says you can take it up to 3 times a day, but I usually put it in my morning smoothie, and occasionally another serving in the evening, but that's it. The one I got is the "Heart Health" one, and it's got other vitamins and stuff in it too. Can't hurt I guess, right?? |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | How soon would a home pregnancy test be accurate? | Sep 20 2009 01:43 (UTC) |

False alarm! A few more home pregnancy tests, a blood test at the doctor, and my period, confirmed it. I actually started feeling better a few days after I posted this, so who knows....maybe it was PMS and a little stomach bug or something? It was definitely weird, but all of the symptoms are gone now! |

Halloween candy in general is the devil! We always seem to end up with a ton at our office and I can't keep my hands off of it. In particular the little mini Twix bars.....mmm. I didn't buy any Halloween candy for trick-or-treaters until the day before Halloween last year, so that we didn't eat it all before, haha. I also switched it up and bought some little mini tubs of Play-Doh to hand out too, so less candy was left over.

Thanks for the replies. I think I am going to make an appt to go see my doctor this week. If I do happen to be pregnant, I want to find out sooner rather than later, since I'm on the pill, and obviously I'd need to stop taking it ASAP. Something is definitely going on with my body....I don't feel sick, but I certainly don't feel like myself. I've been feeling really tired too.....just took the dog for a 1/2 hour walk and came home feeling wiped out.....and that's totally not normal. Plus the super sore boobies, bloating, etc...very weird. It's like PMS x 20! I guess we'll see.... |

Oh, forgot to mention...obviously I am here on CC because I am tying to lose weight. I had lost a few pounds already, but in the last week I have gained some weight back, which I thought was weird, since I haven't changed anything else.... I know that something is going on with my body, I just wanna find out what! |

Thanks for all of the replies :) Yes, I usually do put on deodorant right after I shave, so I am going to stop doing that, and will try to wait a few hours. I also went and bought some Dove Sensitive Skin, fragrance free deodorant, so hopefully that helps as well. I hope I'm not allergic to my own sweat...that would suck! |

I LOVE my peanut butter! I agree with the posts above, as long as you are careful to be conscious of how much you're eating a day, it should be fine. I have a little peanut butter probably everyday, either on a piece of whole wheat toast, a tablespoon in a morning smoothie, etc. It's high in protein and gives me energy and keeps me full....all good things :) |

I will try switching to a different deodorant. Right now, if I put it on right after shaving, it stings pretty bad. No fun. Also a good suggestion about the tight clothes. I will try wearing some loose fitting stuff for a few days and see if that makes any difference. Thanks :) |

| Weight Loss | Getting married? Need to loose weight for the big day? | Sep 01 2009 18:30 (UTC) |

Congrats on your upcoming weddings! I am getting married in July 2010, and would like to lose 20-30 lbs by then. I am currently 5'5" and 170lbs, which is by far the heaviest I have ever been :( I have been trying to stick to a higher protein, low carb diet, avoiding refined sugars, stopped drinking sodas, etc. For exercise, I take our dog for 1 or 2 walks a day (1-1/2 miles each time) plus taking a few cardio strength classes a week at the gym, but need to start adding in some time on the elliptical as well. It's really frustrating, because I have always eaten pretty healthy, but I am just one of those people who needs to work out a lot to lose weight. I am concerned about ordering my wedding dress, as I have heard that it usually takes an average of 6 months to get a dress in on order, but I don't really want to order a dress until I have lost at least some of this weight. I am thinking that I will try to find a dress with a corset-type back, so that it is more adjustable? Good luck to you all! :) |

The foil packets are a good idea. We make them when we go camping in the desert. You can google "campfire hobos" and a lot of different recipes pop up. We make ours with either lean ground beef or turkey, chopped onions, carrots and red potatoes. You just take a sheet of aluminum foil, spray with Pam or rub with olive oil, place the meat and chopped veggies on top, sprinkle with a little salt & pepper, garlic powder, or whatever seasonings you like, and you can add a little bit of butter or margarine too, if you want. Then you just fold up the foil into a triangle, and make sure to seal the corners very well, so they don't leak. I usually double-wrap mine with the foil. These are easy to make before you leave home, just throw them in the cooler until you're ready to cook. To cook them, you can place the packets directly into the campfire. They usually take anywhere from 10-15 minutes per side, depending on how big the fire is. Usually when the potatoes are fork-tender, it means that they are ready, but make sure to check that the meat is cooked through as well. Depending on what meat/veggies/seasonings you use in these, they can be very healthful, and they're super yummy! :) |

| Foods | Back to school lunch ideas? | Aug 12 2009 18:26 (UTC) |

A few ideas: -bring your own salad dressing or one of those "salad spritzer" things and buy a salad with no dressing at school. You could also pack some protein to add into the salad--chicken, kidney beans, etc. -a PB&J (or peanut butter and honey, my fav) sandwich on whole grain bread, and a banana -wraps- turkey, chicken, etc with some veggies wrapped in a tortilla -think of recipes you can make for dinner the night before that will make good lunch leftovers the next day: grilled chicken and veggies, a healthy chili, etc. :) |

I love to make smoothies in the AM. They are super quick to make, and you can get those portable disposable cups with lids so you can take them in the car. One of my favorite smoothies is: one banana, some fat-free milk, tablespoon or so of peanut butter, some kind of chocolate-flavoring (tablespoon of Nestle chocolate milk mix, Slim Fast powder, protein powder, etc.) and a few ice cubes. Blend for a few seconds and you're ready to go. The above recipe could be adjusted to fit however many calories you want to consume in the AM. The smoothie above works great for me, definitely keeps me feeling full and energized all morning! Or, you could try some yogurt, frozen fruit and a little juice or milk- although, I find that these types of smoothies have too much sugar for me in the morning. Another "out the door" favorite: a small tortilla, spread with a little peanut butter and a sliced banana-- you can sprinkle a little cinnamon on top too....yummy and portable! :) |

| Weight Loss | Mexican Food | Aug 04 2009 23:08 (UTC) |

Yep, my Mexican food go-to is chicken fajitas with veggies, black beans and a little guacamole, no tortillas. Tasty!! Just ask for extra veggies instead of the beans. Or, you could get a taco salad with just chicken and veggies on top, use salsa as your dressing....and TRY to avoid eating the deliciously greasy, crispy shell it comes in :) Avoid sour cream, cheese, anything fried.... Or, if this dinner out is a special occasion, or something you don't do very often, just enjoy yourself! Order whatever you want, and just eat half.....take the rest home for lunch the next day, give it to a family member to take home, or just send your unfinished plate back to the kitchen! |

| Foods | 10 Worst Fair Foods: Yuck or Yum? | Aug 04 2009 20:57 (UTC) |

They had the chocolate covered bacon at our local fair and we dared one of our friends to try it. It was cold...came in a little Chinese take out-like box. He bit into it and said it just tasted like salty chocolate. It was mostly chocolate, with little pieces of bacon mixed in. We all decided to try a bite, and it really wasn't that bad! If someone gave you a piece and didn't tell you that there was bacon in it, you wouldn't know. Not a treat I would probably ever choose to have again, but it was definitely interesting! Other weird fair foods I saw this year: -a hot dog inside a zucchini, deep-fried -deep-fried cheesecake -deep-fried pizza -Krispy Kreme chicken sandwich (the donuts are the buns, yuck!!) -deep-fried White Castle burger Fair foods are basically about taking the most unhealthy food you can find, and then deep-frying it! I did have some delicious sweet potato fries and some of my friend's funnel cake :) |
