Hi, Sorry about the MIA last week - I had a final project due at school and then there was all the home stuff, etc.. I am doing ok withe mindful eating thing but horribly with the exercise. I have gotten about 2 hours at most. What is really bad is I have gone from a size 14 back to a 16 and I had already purged by size 16 clothes so my size 14 clothes are REALLY tight! This sucks. I do just feel like giving up and just going backwards. I will write more when I can. I am eating better at least. |

I have a very similar issue with my husband. I know exactly what you are talking about. It is an equation - how much do you love him and your life with him or the alternative. In my husband's case I have been working with him for 4 years. I say what I am going to do and I follow it up exactly like that every time. Over time he has loosened up and things are getting easier. But, there came a time when I asked him - do you like your life? do you want you life to continue like this? If so, then you have to give me some leeway by holding on tighter and trying to control it you will LOSE IT! and I mean lose it BIG! If you loosen up then it will be better and it will last... I had this talk with my husband and over the time it has helped. I agree that counseling will help, but you can't force anyone to anything and don't expect major changes. He can understand that he is making a choice each time and that you are free to make your own choice. Honestly, I think that he has self-esteem issues perhaps and major deep insecurities. So, it is HIS problem but you love him and you are married to him. So, some compassion and empathy may be required. Good Luck |

Hi. I did not use moisturizer until I was in my 30's but I always used sun block on my face. I lived in a very moist environment that it felt terrible when I did use moisturizer. I am now 45 and most people think I am in my 30's. I have used Dermalogica for years and I think it is the best and it does not have any smell. Good Luck. |

Original Post by supersized: I find in this situation when things are so crazy that if I can make my "food" life and my "exercise" life scheduled and stricter then I find that I can weather it without having my food / exercise to go haywire with everything else. I have thought of going to a nutritionist but unless the person is near my building at work it is probably not gonna happen. I have been somewhat successful at the mindful eating and honestly, I sat down and at that chocolate bar and savored it... |

Hi all, Are you on track for achieving your goal? Well, um, er, not really. I wish I could be more positive but I am not. I am struggling. I just found out that my daughter will have her 4th surgery on her leg - we had hoped her leg would hold out for 2-3 years and now it has only been 15 months. If not:
I think I can finish up strong. I just gotta get in my compartmentalization mode. Also, threw away the Halloween candy!! |

Hi, Thanks Julie. I guess I know so many people who are struggling right now with so much - job (or lack there of), finances, relationships, etc. As pollyannish as it is - the only way to really get through it is to find something that you have that is good. Whenever I used to get into my anxiety attacks they taught me to project and what could happen if - you ultimately come down to that for most things you can find something positive. I know that through my weight loss / gain / loss / gain, etc. that I am learning things about myself and how I am getting stronger. It does not always feel that way in the midst, but I am. Once I reflect I feel grateful about what I have learned. It sucks having to learn it this way sometimes but other times perhaps it is the only way that I will learn. Lately my lessons have been: Be proud of where you were - I have gained 15lbs recently - I now know that I can get there again. I know what my body is capable of and how much better I felt. When I was 15lbs less I was hoping to be less than that... I should have savored what I had. Your most important commodity is time... I have been finding myself squandering it and after my Mom's death - I have thought alot about time as a commodity and something to be spent like money. How do I want to spend it? Where do I want to spend it? Who do I want to spend it on? If I could choose... This may seem hokey and I am sorry if it does - I thought perhaps I could share.. Good night, all.

Weekly Topic: I CAAANNNN'TTT, IT's HHHAAARRRDDD!!!!!! (finding positive speak) Yes, I have definitely used some of those... 1. I don't have time Recently I have found time - I feed my daughter (she's 9) as soon as I get home @ 6PM or so. I pack my gym bag while she is eating and without stopping I pack us into the car for the pool. We are fortunate in that we have a pool facility with 3 pools so she can play in the small pools while I do my pool running. I pool run for 1 hour - BORING but I have found that I look at it meditatively and use my Buddhist meditation it is alot easier.. Then we take showers and she is ready to go to bed. If I had to go to the gym then I have thought I woudl plunk her down in the gym with her homework and work out and she can come and ask me questions while I work out. I have FOUND TIME... 2. I am tired - no sleep This is a Carol special. I used it yesterday... So I fake myself out. I put on my exercise gear, I say to myself well you can make it 15 minutes - right? yeah, you can... then I push it to 20 minutes (what is only 5 minutes more..., right? ) and i just have this running dialogue until I am done. I do feel better afterwards. 3. My knee hurts This was has been hard - so I just got around it through identifiying what i could do. I could swim, i could do upper body exercises, I can do some yoga, rather than what I could not do. Weekly Check In Got to 4 hours of exercise this week and I was mindfully eating about 60% of the time. So I am improving. Although I am up one size which upsets me to no end. However, honestly, I am just gonna torture my self and not go back into my larger clothes at this point so that I can feel my progress. I am considering going on a menu plan diet - you know it tells you exactly what to eat - for a month so that I can kick start my weight loss. Any one have any good ones that are 40-30-30. Thanks. austiemg, Golly, I think we all know how you feel. I guess my only advice when you feel this way is to focus on one thing and get that done but don't think about anything else. Build on this success day by day. Focus on what you are doing and NOT what you are NOT doing. Pat your self on the back - I AM GETTING UP and caring for my son. I am picking up shifts and contributing to the family, etc. I know money is tight but there are services available at low cost or no cost if you feel you are depressed and it is not abating. I know when I went through some profound depression I did not leave bed for 5 days - I did not eat, I did not drink, I just slept and stayed in bed. I hope that this helps you. -Carol |

OK, I am one of those lame recipe posters... I admit it. I need to go to wagon jumpers therapy for this one... but, ok this time - I have one.. It is NOT mine.. but one that you can modify to make it lower calorie - don't use cream or use non-fat condensed milk - don't use butter but instead use olive oil. However, it is really yummy and The Surreal Gourmet has some great ideas about cooking... http://caloriecount.about.com/carrot-ginger-s oup-surreal-gourmet-recipe-r275359 Have fun!!!

Hi, NEW:80% of the time I will seat sitting down and put down my fork/spoon/food in between bites. MAINTENANCE:Do, 5 hours of cardio / week + 2 weight lifting sessions / week My progress: On the new one - I am hitting about 75% of the time. I am trying to sit down with my children when they eat rather than standing up and doing something else while they eat their breakfast. Snacks have not been so successful though. I am trying to just overall slow down and be more mindful. On maintenance - I have gotten in 3 hours of cardio and 1 weightlifting session. I have been targeting my left leg to get the muscles back to square one. - so I guess I am at 50%. I have been able to get to the trails 1X per week and now I am going to go into spinning classes. This past week: My weeks are now jam packed - and this is the first month of a 24 months MBA program - YIKES. I keep repeating to myself - "it's gonna be allright!" I have to continue to deal with my demon - stress and stress eating. hence my new goals of slowing down. I have been thinking of trying to do meditate again. Anything to take away the stress and help me cope better. I have gone up a size (yeah, that's waht happens with a 15lbs weight gain). This bums me out totally - as you can expect. I now have a HUGE muffin top but I know that i can lose and keep it off. Good Luck on the baby - Bigbitty! i can't even imagine the anticipation of having a child - my daugher was adopted so while there preparations - nothing like pregnancy. Welcome to new members. I think you will totally enjoy this group. |

Hi, OK, so I was on the trail today! It was WONDERFUL! I walked 75% of a very simple trail. I had to ice my knee for 20 minutes afterwards but it was so nice to be there. I only did 4.6 miles and it took me 70 minutes. Normally it would be about 45 minutes. But small steps.... I was doing New Rules but that has been suspended in favor of more knee friendly exercises. I think that weights can get so boring if you do the same old routines so I have downloaded on my iPhone, iFitness and WH Fitness. The apps have lots of different exercises and variations so I can do bunches routines. Right now I am focusing on my quads as their weakness is the root of all knee evil. Fun Fun.. Food is continuing to get better control. |

Hi All, OK, so I am not going to be able to do the assignment this week. I am at this intensive kick off for my master's and well, it's 13 hour days with business simulations... It's funny how other approach problem solving and ya kinda twist up your nose and go - really you can do that.. Eating is fine this week because 1) we are in class most of the day and there is no food availability Exercise is proving a challenge but I got my student ID and supposedly that gets me into a pool and health center on campus. Woo Hoo... If I can get something done 2X this week then that would be great. Ok, the weekly knee status, I know you all read my posts for it... Alleve seems to be keeping the pain away, but it has increased my lithium levels so I had to back down on lithium so that i would not become toxic. I am starting to go from 6 Alleve down to 4 and then down to 2. We will see if my knee responds accordinly and it does not hurt. The other day I was late for a meeting and ran down the hall way to get there. - Golly that felt so good... Cu. Carol

HI Biscuit, The shoes are a very individual choice. It is best to have them fitted at a running store. My husband trained me. While there are different philosophies as to training, as you are starting out - I would run less intensely and run longer vs. more intense and shorter. Later on you add in speedwork to work out more intensely. Take care. |

Hi, I started running @ 225lbs. My heart going up a certain hill would max out @ 149bpm or so. After about a year of running I was down to 185 and my heard rate was down to 136 on that same hill. My speed went from 12 min/mile down to 9.5min/mile. A few things: 1. Buy VERY VERY good shoes at that weight. I like ASICS very much. Good Luck. I am current injured with a knee problem and I miss running so much especially since I am a trail runner and I love the woods. Take care. |

HI, So my goals I proposed were: 1) Do, 5 hours of cardio / week + 2 weight lifting sessions / week 2) 80% of the time stop before eating and ask if I really require this food and be mindful of eating while understanding the ramifications of the food choice. But I do agree the 2nd one is squishy and hard to consolidate... So, here is my ammended one. 2) 80% of the time I will seat sitting down and put down my fork/spoon/food in between bites. I am going to try to experience mindful eating... I know it sounds crazy but I think i need to be forced to slow down and think about things. |

Hi, I have been thinking about this alot. As wierd as it sounds I have been drowning my frustration and pain about my knee in FOOD... I am on alot of Alleve to get the pain down and maybe the inflammation... OK, so I think my two goals are: 1) Do, 5 hours of cardio / week + 2 weight lifting sessions / week 2) 80% of the time stop before eating and ask if I really require this food and be mindful of eating while understanding the ramifications of the food choice. I will log my food and make this a base level skill but I think I am reaching for a better control over my emotional eating which continues to hamper any progress. Hope this makes sense. -Carol |

Welcome Rachael. I hope you find this group helpful and supportive. I think they are... So, went to the doctor. He is not sure if it is structural or not. He pulled up the MRI from July and well, he did not see anything. Because I had the hip thing in December to June and knee issue, they are testing me for rheumatoid athritis. I am so not happy about this. But hopefully this will not be true and I can go onto other things.

Hi Raven, I think heart rate monitors are a must for aerobic activity. It tells you how hard you are working and you can decide to adjust. I have heard great things about Polar and the nice thing is that their heartstraps work with most gym aerobic equipment. I used Timex for a while and it broke after 6 months so I don't think it was very good. Things I think are useful are:
I also used a Forerunner 50 from Garmin for about 1 year and then the watch straap broke and I thought that wasn't good so I got my money back. It has a pedometer and can record your distance as well as time, calories. It does generate your calories by how far you have run and not by your heart rate. So, using it for your gym workouts that would be elliptical or such - it is not very hepful. But I liked it so I could use their software to compare my runs and see where I had gotten faster, etc. If i were to buy another one I would buy the Forerunner 350 (it is the one that has the GPS, etc. ) but it is a BIG watch and expensive. Now, I just use my Nike sports watch in the pool to time my laps as I run in suspended mode. It is sooo boring... Good Luck, hope I helped. |

Hi, NEW: Log my food 85% of the time. MAINTENANCE: Running at least 5 hrs/week and lifting 2x/week. My grading - Log food - 50% of the time and well, we know what happened to the running - 10% since my knee started being funny in early July. For next time - I think I will still strive for: NEW: Log my food 85% of the time. MAINTENANCE: Cardio at least 3 hrs/week and lifting 2x/week. I know that this will be somewhat challenging since I will be going to school in a few weeks - this is gonna be hard, work 50-60 hrs/ week, study 15-20hr/week and then all the other family stuff. I am more efficient the more that I have to do. Update on the knee - yep it was getting better and now well it is not. But before it hurting in very non-specific places and I could not touch it and make it hurt, well, now I can so back to the orthopedic surgeon. I think it is definitely a torn meniscus. Let's hope that this is an in and out thing. I think the derailment for me alot of time is stress. I am trying to deal with it but lately since I can't run it's been hard. Take care.

Wenchie -- Babe is all in the eye of the beholder and beholdee!! And a ton of attitude! You know there are women I see when I am people watching in a mall or airport or restaurant and there is nothing special about them overall but then you see how they walk and how they interact and how they just plain are -- then you look at them and while you may not have seen them in their bikini -- they are babe's.... There is a "babe" in us all... |

Oh God, stress gets me EVERY TIME. I don't know why and while I try to do all the techniques - I still dive into that food that I think will make me feel better. Also, I do something that is also really bad - revenge eating... it is terrible. It is mostly directed at my husband... Probably because he is the one that is most concerned about my appearance - I know, it is terrible. It is his hangup and not mine and I believe he is working on it. I actually am able to put down the fork at dinner - it is the sometimes the food I ate for dinner or the sweets, baked goods, etc. I also get very dizzy, bitchy and a bad headache when I don't eat so being starving takes things to a whole other level... Anyways.. just some rumblings...

HI, I can understand your frustration. Losing weight and reducing size at any age is frustrating. Have you considered: 1) that size matters vs. what weight you are at? 2) changing up your exercise routines - maybe doing some substitutions, more weight lifting, etc? 3) making your balance more towards 40/30/30 (ala zone diet)? I know the phrase, "hang in there" just does not really cut it when you are so frustrated.. I also think that taking some time to "maintain" also is healthy. My first 70lbs - I lost 40 then maintained for a year and then lost the additonal 30. now I am truly stuck on the final 40 to 50 but I really want to be a size 8 at whatever weigth it turns out to be... Good luck. |

Hi, Welcome Vera, hope you find this helpful in your quest... I am with msmeg - this one was difficult. I think there are internal - how I feel about it and then there are external - how others feel about it. Layer One: Layer Two: Layer Three:I think you feel cleaner when you eat healthier. When it is lower in fat. I think I think clearer - not sure if this is a myth or what. No injuries caused by my weight putting pressure on my feet. I love running and dearly miss running the woods - I know my weight puts way too much stress on my muscoskeletal system. My weight has been climbing as of late. Work, now starting school, kids, - you know the typical. so here are my thoughts on my action plan to get back on the wagon... Week 1 (this week): Week 2 (Sept 13th week) Week 3 (9/20) Week 4 (9/27) - I will be at school for a week (MBA school) Well, let's see if I can do this plan. I think it is ambitious but worthwhile. I have gained probably 15lbs now by the fit of my clothes - I am scared to even look at the scale... Take care...

Hi, Yes, I am still here. We were on vacation and guess what I can not post from my iPhone... I am sure there is some app out there but I did not have it. We did a car trip around Oregon for vacation. Saw alot of nice things / sites and after 6 days we were somewhat happy to be home with more space. Have not done any exercise and eating is definitely off the wagon. Autumn time has always been a good time for me to recommit so I am working towards that. My knee is better but I think it is just time that is healing it. I wish I knew the root cause of the problem. I don't trust it right now even though it does not hurt all the time I don't feel like it is fixed... So, I don't have an action plan yet on how to get back on the wagon but I am starting... Welcome to new members - you will like it here! Thanks

Hi, Assignment: Generally, I am a hike / run / bike kinda girl.. Oregon summers are the BEST - pretty much since the rest of the year it rains. This year though it has been swimming - some in the out door pools but alot in indoor pools. We are also going white water rafting on our vacation in a few weeks and riding our bikes. Our kids are kind of like puppies - you have to keep them active and outdoors. This week: Ran 4X in the pool - chlorine - YUK! Today was the first day that I ran in water where I could touch down and not in deep water. It felt OK but the knee is still funky. I can't tell if the naturopath is helping or it is just time... I know the orthopedic guys were not going to help. My eating has been OK this week. I have not been logging. I definitely have not been hungry at night - no sweet attacks... I have also been using my iPhone with this app called IFitness on it to do specific targeted weight routines but stay off my knee - it is pretty good. Hope every is doing well. Take care. Carol |

Hi, HMMMM... well, I have started to swim and run in the pool. I hate chlorine - I mean I really hate it. But you know, I was in the pool on Sunday morning and I saw this very very large woman two lanes over and she was there before I got there and then she was there after I was done (only did 45 mins). At one point we were turning at the same time and I smiled and said hi - she was shocked that someone had said, hi. I kind of thought - how sad that she was surprised that someone would say hi or what. I wanted to give her some encouragement and have her be proud of herself. Needless to say I am trying to get some exercise - I realise how much my freestyle stroke really stinks - breast stroke is better. I have learned how to run in the pool and can get things going a bit better there but no where near my 140bpm that I can when I actually run. I think do just upper body and abs and some non-knee straining leg movements. Naturopath did not have any additional ideas on my knee but did some adjustments to my joints, back, etc. and I got some acupuncture. They still think that it is ligament / tendons which are upset and secreting fluid into my knee. But it is interesting because my left illiobands are loose but my right are tight - my right hip has bursitis but my left is fine and my left knee is screwed up. So, I have a feeling that it is all connected in some weird way. My eating is OK. It is interesting but I am not finishing anything at all lately. I just am not hungry and I don't seem to crave chocolate. Go figure.. Laura and I exchanged info - it was great - Here were our list of questions / answers: 1. Where do you live? Nothern VAm just outside of DC. 2. How long have you lived there? I moved to the area in 1998. Before that I lived in NY for most of my life. 3. What do you like to do? Like if you had a completely free day? I love photography, gardening, walking, biking, some crafts like tie dying and mosaics. I can also be very lazy and spend the whole day reading. Things I want to get to but haven't found the time - relearning Italian and French through Rosetta Stone tapes or something like that (minored in French and Italian in undergrad), piano lessons (took lessons as a child and have forgotten everything), swing dancing lessons (took lessons before I got married and would love to do more). 4. Best place where you have taken a vacation and place where you want to take a vacation? I went to Italy on my honeymoon in 1999. Rome, Florence and Tuscany. I would like to get back there. But we have been discussing an outdoor adventure type vacation like Alaska, Hawaii, Yellowstone National Park. Something like that because we have two young children and I don't think they would enjoy a cultural sight seeing type vacation just yet. 5. Family - married, how many children, etc. I am married with two children - 8 yr old daughter, 6 yr old son. 6. Favorite exercise / Least favorite exercise I looooove weight lifting. I finished NROLFW and am woking my way through NROL. I don't think I have ever enjoyed an exercise program as much as I am enjoying these books. I also like walking and biking a lot. I hate high impact exercises like running. I also get nauseous just thinking about spending time on the cardio machines in the gym.
