Health & Support who thinks calorie count CAUSES more ED's than help recover? Apr 13 2009

**not saying CC doesnt help anyone... just saying it harms more

..... certainly did to my friend AND sister....... just hope i'm not next.
First started out with my friend, innocntly just looking up healthy food and getting fit, then she found out how much calories shes supposed to have per day, then started becomming obsessive.... you know the drill, i guess..
(AND I'M PRETTY SURE T HERES MORE EATING DISORDERED LURKERS HERE THAN ANYOTHER PRO-ANNA SITE) either from wanting to be skinny or from wanting to be healthy, this site can get addictive

then my little sister saw it, copied it, and now shes STARTING...... i would look up the site's history and see her posts and junk and this is sad.....

honestly, whats the point of calorie count?........ i myself started .... a yesterday ago?.... and i too see myself on the computer a bit more frequently (used to be 0 minutes a day)....... just out of curiousity.
Calorie count may have been a site to help ppl get healthy and all that junk, but why can't ppl do that WITHOUT going on the computer and WITHOUT attracting other possible may be in future eating disorder ppl?

i think this'll be my last post...... i offiially quit after 2 days and forbid anyone in my family from seeing this site again......... its already messed up one of my closest friend (she wouldnt even touch that cake on my birthday........... because its not "healthy"...... not because she's trying to lose weight)

and i see alot of "healthy" ppl here on this site (or trying to) that try to help other people...... and....... honestly, from an outsider's view, its not that much of a help..... a disordered mind wud probably not even read what they don't want to read, and ur advices SUCKKK. i see the same post over and over again, too...... i'm pretty sure ALMOST EVERYONES seen those posts before.... but you knwo what? they won't accept it......... (hoe pyou know what i'm talking about)

sorry, just a little frusturated....... yell at me all you want, i wont be back :D
(as for those who successfuly lost weight or gained, congrats,)

I don't know if it causes ED but I definitely think it enables.  The tools allow one to become obsessive if that is already within them.  I am definitely bothered by many of the posts here and have not been on this site in some time because of it.

Foods What do you eat at a mexican resturant on CC? Feb 21 2009

Chicken tacos should be pretty guilt free, especially on soft tortillas instead of crunchy, and skip the sour cream and cheese. Mexican food is very healthy as long as you stay away from dairy and deep frying and go for proteins leaner than ground beef. Tonight I "pigged" out on roast pork tacos on soft corn tortillas with some fat-free refried beans, guacamole and salsa. High protein, low fat (except the guac, but that's good fat), and very tasty!

Actually soft flour tortillas have more calories that crunchy.

I am soooo very confused about whether i'm small or large boned!  my wrists are some of the tiniest i've ever seen----i can even overlap my thumb and my PINKIE around them easily.  but then i think my hip bones are quite large.  i have 37 inch hips (at 5'3, 124), but my hip bones stick out.

so basically....anyone know if there are other ways to figure out frme size?  if you have huge hips but small wrists, does that means you're medium framed?

My boyfriend looked at my fingers one day and started pointing and saying ET phone home so I know that frame size test doesn't work for me.

Since there are so many things you can't eat maybe you ought to list those so we can try to help you.

I haven't had any problems with the vegan lifestyle, living in the suburbs.

Even local grocery stores carry rice and many different kinds of beans (canned or dried), lots of vegetables (frozen or fresh) and fruits. There's pasta and tortillas and other staples that you can base meals off of...Pizza loaded with veggies or tortillas stuffed with salad or rice and beans and other burrito fillings.

I haven't come across a restaurant really that doesn't offer some sort of salad or baked potato...I just get creative and jazz them up with salsa or dressings when I go out.  What places are local to you? Maybe that would help us to offer better suggestions.

Suburbs and rural are two different things.  Rural means farms etc. and 30min drives to civilization.

Original Post by udokier:

Okay, first off I don't come to CC that much anymore because I'm pretty happy with my weight and have maintained for a while now.

My crush on the guy at work became such a huge distraction that I finally decided to email him and let him know how I feel about him. Unfortunately, despite his paying constant attention to me, he's straight with a girlfriend. So after 6 months of (I thought) really connecting with this man, I was crushed and cried my eyes out (about the guy and about my situation in general) every day for about 2 weeks. He was really nice and understanding, but I still have to get texts from this guy everyday and he acts like nothing has happened, so It's kind of painful.

But in the wake of all of this, I finally did decide to start making some changes - I've started going out with friends every week. I'm introverted and so is the wife, so it's easy for us to become shutins. The wife is content to be that way, but I'm sick of it.

I also asked another co-worker (this one is gay) for a lunch date when he gets here next month. I like him and hope we hit it off. (since this seems to be confusing a lot of people here, I mean "get along", not "rush off and have sex" He doesn't even live here in town right now. Any potential real involvements would have to be a ways off. I just want to strike up a friendship with another gay man who might understand me better than my other friends here.  I have *NO* other gay friends in this whole town, and I'm sure as hell not going to start going to gay bars to try and meet some.)

I'm mostly over the crush now and am preparing over the next couple months before I sit down with the wife and tell her I want to separate. Sexuality issues aside, I don't enjoy her company much anymore and basically am always happier away from her.

I've also confided in several trusted friends, so I have people I can talk with about this and get advice.

Seriously -- end your relationship with your wife first then move on.   You must close one door before you can really open another.

Weight Loss best birth control for NOT gaining weight? Feb 17 2009

Original Post by lemon_drop:

Sorry this is so long...

Ok, so I have to say that I've had the same issues with birth control. I have always had a problem gaining weight/bloated feelings mostly or being an emotional roller coaster. I am however in a monotonous relationship being that I'm married, so I decided to try the Mirena IUD. Let me tell you, I couldn't wait to get it b/c it seemed almost too good to be true. When I was in the office having it inserted, it was very uncomfortable and then I got a horrible feeling like I was going to pass out. My OBGYN told me that it was normal & had me lie back as she put a cool washcloth over my forehead. It went away & I was fine...for now.

About 3 months later, I began my period which turned into 2 weeks of bleeding horribly. Every day it would get worse. One day when I was working my period was so heavy that I couldn't even get out of the restroom as it would flow & fill up a huge tampon & pad within minutes. I went to the ER in which they did thousands of dollars worth of tests to say nothing was wrong & sent me home. Three days later I went to the restroom & get this...THE IUD FELL OUT!!!!!!! I was actually pleased to see this as I felt it was obviously the culprit behind my bleeding and that now I would be fine. Well it was the culprit but I was anything but fine. I had to go to the ER again after continuous bleeding that would fill up a toddlers diaper (b/c the pads wouldn't suffice). When I got to the ER they got me ready for a blood transfusion and had to do a catheter to get a urine sample b/c I couldn't even stand up w/o passing out. I had to have a D & C. Also, they told me I was pregnant & then came back later and told me I wasn't. I guess I'll never really know the truth. It cost me thousands of dollars in medical bills after my insurance & may have screwed me up for life as my periods are not the same. I sometimes wonder if I can even get pregnant now.

I WOULD NEVERRECOMMEND ANYONE TO GET THE MIRENA IUD!!! This may not happen to everyone (since they said it's extremely rare) but it CAN happen as it did happen to me. Why take your chances? What I went though was horrible. It's just my opinion.

I have had the MIRENA for 4 years no problems, just because it is your experience doesn't mean it is others.  I have had pregnant women die does that mean no more pregnancies.  Don't speculate on your chances of getting pregnant you are just trying to scare people.  EVERYTHING has risk and many more people bleed because of AUB or fibroids or pregnancy or natural conditions.   Every person needs to talk to their individual physician to make up their minds but my life is so much better after my MIRENA that if someone gave me 1 million dollars to give it back I wouldn't.  I was bleeding like crazy before and now things are stable and rational.

It does not seem to matter what I used in the past.   Birth control does one of two things to me:  1)   makes me crazy from hormones  (I do much better with a low, constant dosage) or 2) makes me gain weight.

I would rather go without, but I can feel a real difference in the strength and severity of my periods since I quit taking it......

What GOOD experiences have you had with what pills or shots as birth control?   What method seemed to work the best for you WITHOUT aiding weight gain?

I will do my continued daily workouts and smart eating.   I would just like to not start behind the 8 ball.

I am curious about some of the new stuff like Seasonal/ique and Yaz.  Also is Depo-Provera any better than when I was in college forever ago?   EDIT TO ADD:  also opinions and usage issues with the Patch, Ortho Evra?   the online info was good...

thanks!   keeping it extra safe, you know....

DEPO is AWFUL, Nuvaring would be the way to go.  It delivers 15mcg of estrogen in a steady state dose insead of 35 or 30 all at one time.  I have had the best success with the most amount of people with the Mirena IUD.

Do you know what the cc is looking for when they calculate the nutrition grade?  When I add items myself, with calories, grams, fat, protein, sodium, carbs and fiber, it will not calculate.

Does it need vitamins to help calculate?

Thanks.

Denise

It gives me a grade when I add the vitamins and it doesn't if I don't.

Obsessively counting calories does not necessarily mean ED, however anytime you HAVE to do anything I worry.  It could be just mild OCD.

Anyone have a good recipe for a spicy vegetarian thai green curry??

Thanks!

Thai kitchen makes a great green curry paste.  I  mix that with lite coconut milk and dilute 1/1 with water and use plenty of red pepper flake.  I also add plenty of fresh basil two tablespoons of spenda and 1tbl of fish sauce.  I then add veggies to taste -- yum.  I wouldn't use yogurt, the thai flavors are really dependent on the flavor of the coconut milk.  I know it is high in fat but if you get the lite and thin it out it still works, not perfect but still works.

Hello All:

I was a vegan for about a year, up until I moved from a major metropolitan area to a tiny town so rural that not only is whole foods hundreds of miles away, but even a walmart supercenter is 25 miles away.  I fell off the wagon massively, first to vegetarianism and then to full on omni.  I want to go back to my vegan ways, and I'm finding ways to do it at  home (first trip to a resturaunt ought to be intersting though), and I'm just looking for any tips other rural vegans have for how they do it.  I know I feel better when I eat vegan, and I'm excited to go back, just a little nervous as to how I'm going to pull it off (especially while living with a meat-eater who's on the Atkins diet)

I tried to be a vegan in a rural town and just could not do it.  HOWEVER, right before I left I stumbled on a potential solution.  There were local farmers with fresh produce around and I found people who were making deals with the farmers.  What I heard was that if you commited in advance to taking some of their produce you had EXCELLENT veggies which kept you exited about eating possibilities.  Fall produce keeps pretty good like squash etc.  I would just give up on the restaurant idea.  I used to have to drive an hour and  a half for a Red Lobster, which was the best I could do.  Good luck.

Weight Loss Do you consider yourself overweight? Feb 17 2009

Original Post by c_jamie:

For those of you who consider yourself overweight, what do you think caused this?

For example, was it simply overeating every single meal? Or junk food everyday (ie. half a box of cookies everyday? a bag of chips in front of the tv every night?) Genetics? Fast food every meal?

Basically, looking back, what were your biggest mistake(s) that led you to being overweight?

I was always overweight but not by much, maybe in the range of 10-20# growing up.  I was active though, always, I was a competive swimmer in grade school and high school.  I rowed in college.  No matter what I did, I stayed about the same weight.  When I started my residency I unfortunately started a work schedule where I would not eat for 48 hours at a time.  I would work for 24hours straight without time for a meal break or bathroom break.  Then sleep for 24.  There were even days when I went for 24hours without sitting down at all.  This went on for about 4 years then when I became a normal human being again and ate everyday and ate appropriate meals daily I gained 70 lbs in no time, I was also in a very cold climate where the weight literally worked as an insulator.  I truly screwed my metabolism and now I am paying the price because I have to eat enough calories AND they have to be good quality calories to get any weight loss.  Back in the day, I could eat a little of everything and not pay too high a price but the times they been a changin' :(

Clomid and Metformin (pills) are a better way to start and much cheaper than IVF.  Both work very well in patients your size.  There is no reason to go straight to IVF

Vegetarian So. How would you feel if you found gelatin in your medicine/supplements? Feb 17 2009

Original Post by kaybug:

Whelps, I'm taking an herbal supplement to balance my hormones. My parents and I both don't like me being on formal BC for my period (since it does absolutely nothin', and none of the medicine they've been putting me on is all that safe for long term usage), so we've been taking this one brand of herbal pill thingies that do actually help.

I was reading the label today just because it was there and I wanted to see what was in it..

Then I realized it had "Kosher Gelatin" in it and I was shocked. ;~; This blend is so far the only thing that has me balanced... and it has gelatin in it. Gahhh. I can't really stop taking it at this millisecond because that bottle cost quite a bit of money, and my parents can't afford to try anything else right now.

So, in your personal opinion, what would you do? Continue taking it or go attempt to find something else?

(I'm assuming this is in the right place, it be vegetarian and all. :0)

There are PLENTY of studies showing that long term usage of birth control pills are safe.  In fact there is no increase in breast cancer risk and a decrease in ovarian cancer risk.  In fact what evidence do you have that the herbal supplements are safe?  That they are what they say they are?  Remember belladonna is a plant and that is poisonous.  I am not suggesting that you take something that doesn't work for you but be careful thinking that just because something comes from a plant it must automatically be OK.  The first medicines were all plants.  Aspirin comes from the bark of the willow tree and is fatal in overdose, digitalis which is powerful heart medicine comes from the foxglove and can kill you.  Furthermore since there is no regulation of herbals they can put anything they want in there.  Recently there have been stories of herbal supplements containing prescription medications that were not on the label and when they did testing of the St. John's Wort supplement (which works in the same biochemical manner as prozac) was tested they found the active ingredient was as low as 10% of what was reported on the bottle and as high as 1000%.  Understand -- I am not knocking herbal supplements - I take them, but don't function under illusions.

Hi. im experiencing hair loss at the temples of my head. I do have hormonal problems (i was told i am insulin resistant and maybe have pcos). i am taking metformin for the insulin resistance. Im also very overweight, which i know effects hormones. What can be done to help me from losing my hair more and/or regrowing it? Will losing weight help, maybe to restore balance to the hormones? I dont know...

these are two pictures of what it looks like on one side:

http://s653.photobucket.com/albums/uu255...

Hair loss at the temples sounds like male pattern baldness which could be due to the increased male hormones which are present in PCOS.  One of the ways to suppress these hormones is with combined hormonal contraceptives which usually in my experience makes weight loss easier if you have PCOS.  Weight loss will also help with that but you want to get that hair loss stopped RIGHT NOW.  I would go to your doctor and discuss the additional symptoms.

Health & Support Muscle aches = hunger? Feb 11 2009

Original Post by tweeko:

Ok, simple question really, when I work out, I get muscle aches, as to be expected, however they get more and more sore for about 4 days and can last about a week, during which I seem super hungry (maybe I'm just eating to try and take my mind off the pain?) Anyway, I'v noticed if I do cave and eat extra the pain seems to fade faster. Basically, I'm wondering if I should eat more, stop being such a wuss, or if my mind is just playing foody tricks on me and it's all in my head? Anyone else find they are extra hungry whilst your muscles hurt, and if eating extra does help or not?

I'm 5'10, 20 and aim for around 1700-2000 depending on if it's a workout day or not, I exercise for two hours about 4 times a week, more if I can.

To me muscle pain means that it is damaged and is in the process of rebuilding and therefore needs the building blocks of muscle -- protein in order to rebuild and change.  That's why increase in appetite.  I tend to eat a lot of pure protein when I have muscle soreness instead of carbs etc.

My inner thighs are seriously beginning to bother me. I know you can't spot reduce, but I'm not sure what to do. Technically I'm not supposed to lose anymore weight, but I feel like ultimately that's the only way to go about fixing them.

Exercise hasn't given me any results (in regards to my inner thighs). I've tried squats, lunges, this, that, etc. Are there any other exercises worth trying or do I just have to lose more weight?

You may also want to have an objective 3rd party tell you if you really do have a problem or not.  Many times how we see ourselves and how everyone else sees us is a completely different world.

Original Post by luthien_j:

Hi all,

Today I got my first ever prescription for Levothyroxine, I'm on a trial run because I'm borderline hypothyroid.

I forgot to ask my doc because with all the info he was giving me I was a little overwhelmed and I'm not sure whether I should stop my contraceptive pill while I'm on levothyroxine because it might interfere with the thyroid hormone.

Is this true and what should I do? It's almost impossible to get an appointment these days so I can't really go back and ask him, I've been desperate for these tablets for ages and want to take them ASAP but don't want to stop taking the pill if i can help it as I have been on it nearly 3 years with only one break and I try not to skip them if I can help it.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated x

Is just fine just take levothyroxin on an empty stomach.  Also, you don't need an appt for something like that, just call the office nurse they will get back to you on that.

So here is the deal:

5'5, 115, 18% body fat.  I run, lift weights, bike, and do squats, lunges, deadlifts.. etc.  My thighs have really firmed up and have grown and my rear has shall we say  lifted from its saggy beginnings.  The problem is that I have this area on the side of my upper outer thighs/rear area that drastically needs improvement.   What all type of exercises can I do that will at least work that general area?  I know you can't spot reduce but I just want to feel the burn in that area...   I know that is where I carry my fat but I do cardio and I work on my legs and just figured I must be missing something.

I've started focusing more on side lunges but what else can I do?  I can pinch it which would mean it is probably fat but I can only lose 4 more pounds to be in the safe zone and even when I got down to 106 I think it was still there.

Please help!  Bathing suit season is quickly approaching!!!! Cry

Side lunges etc actually work the gluteus medius and minimus which are in the butt.  To get to the muscle of the outer thigh it is the lateral head of the quad which you can hit doing leg presses with the toes pointed inward

Health & Support Don't want to sound Vain but I have a question...... Feb 11 2009

Original Post by meagang:

I read about all these women who have lost weight and are feeling better about themselves, real life women.  They said that since they've lost weight they have been noticing men checking them out or whistling at them (married women included!). I can imagine this would make them feel pretty good.  Heres the somewhat Vain part I suppose, ever since losing 90lbs. I have felt more confident even prettier than before, but yet I've never had that I'm married myself but in my whole life I have never had any guys ever look at me (except my husband) so it gets me thinking.......maybe I'm not that good looking or still too "big" for them. I don't know this is probably a stupid question I'm just curious, I think it would boost my confidence majorly if it ever happened.  Anyways just wanted to share. Also another quick question I recently went off my birthcontrol, and I noticed that my face was starting to break out a little again.  I haven't had my acne since I started getting healthy and I thought that going off the pill would be even better, since all the "extra" hormones aren't there.  If my acne comes back I just know i"m going to feel even worse. Thanks for your responses!

I think that the getting checked out part depends on who you are around what you notice and what other vibes you give off.  I tend to give of a don't f*** with me vibe which limits those advances.  As to the birth control pills, all of them decrease acne because they regulate your hormones.  They replace -- not add to the hormones in your system and prevent ovulation which prevents progesterone elevations which are mostly responsible for pms, bloating, acne etc.  That's the short version it is really a lot longer and more complicated but OCP's are not necessarily a bad thing.  And they decrease your risk of ovarian cancer.

I went for my 37 week appointment yesterday. I'm not dilated at all. In fact, I had to get an ultrasound to confirm the baby was still head down (which he is, thankfully). I've been having contractions on and off, my pelvis is stretching like a mofo and OH THE PRESSURE! I'm just so sad that I'm in all this pain and uncomfortable and then, BAM... nothing. Now I know we women can go from 0 to 3 in just moments but still, when you're getting checked weekly and nothing is happening, it's discouraging.

This is my third child, so I honestly thought with all that I'm going thru, I'd at least be a 1/2 a centimeter. I know I won't be pregnant forever but the last weeks are the worst!

Sorry ladies.... just needed to get that off my chest.

P.S. Last night before bed I took a SIP of lemonade and it turned into a marathon to the bathroom all night. I want my son to cook until he's "done" but when do we as moms get a break? Yeah Yeah Yeah, when the baby is in our arms, well I'm selfish and want it NOW!

Actually that is not abnormal with the third child.  I have seen (many a time) in the last 10 years of delivering babies a third time mom go from closed to baby out in two hours flat.  Don't despair, you are not even term yet.

Almost everything said is true except a LEEP or Cone Bx will not change ovulation but it can bleed and be mistaken for a period.   As an OB I think the best thing really to do is get this settled NOW.  Waiting for a post-partum paternity test really muddles the waters and will strain your relationship, you don't wan't to do that.  She normally would get an U/S at 16-18 wks but what she can do is tell her OB that she doesn't really know when her LMP was and they can do a DATING U/S.  The earlier the U/S the more accurate the info.  There sounds like there are some definite and legitimate questions that need to be answered now and if there is any doubt about the due date it is better to eval earlier than later.

Welcome to the group Violet-I took a look at some pictures of Salma Hayek and Scarlett Johansson-in my book, they are skinny.  I will NEVER be able to look like them, and I guess that is where I was going with starting this thread.  I want to be socially acceptable for the big girl I am-imperfect cellulite and all.  That is what I was talking about.  Those girls may have "curves" but they are absolutely perfect!  Not a trace of cululite to be found.  I have cottage cheese on my hips, and my backside, and I have a stomach that consists of loose disgusting skin.  I won't even get into the stretch marks all over my body and the fact that my "girls" don't exactly stand up if you know what I mean.  You are not going to find any of that on those girls!  Now if you would have used Queen Latifa as your example, you'd have had me!! :)  That girl's got some DEFINATE curves goin' on!!!  I think she is absolutely BEAUTIFUL myself.

Remember though that even perfect looking celebrities aren't perfect.  They have foundation garments on which impede the look of cellulite (those things can even make my cellulite go away) and don't forget airbrushing.  Remember when Jaime Lee Curtis did a photoshoot and didn't have any of the "usual" stuff done to her picture.  Just remember, even those guys don't look like that even if they are skinny.  And my favorite line recently was when Guy Ritchie said cuddling up to Madonna was like cuddling up to a piece of gristle.  I know it is mean spirited but I did enjoy it.  :)

P.S.  Also, no one looks like they do in clothes, we compare ourselves naked to everyone else dressed.  As an Ob/Gyn physician I can tell you, seriously, everyone looks different naked.  No One's girls stand up and almost EVERYONE over the age of 21 has cellulite.   Even people who have had plastic surgery have scars and dimples from the surgery.  Don't be fooled by propaganda.

So my bf is the love of my life. Now I don't know if it's my conservatism/prudeness or just my insecurity that's getting in the way but, here's let me give you some background info:

My bf and I are the types that give our whole hearts in a relationship. We were both heartbroken by our ex's. Just for stats, we're both 22 yo and soon-to-be college grads. I have only had one serious relationship in the past (who I have lost my virginity to.. so my bf right now is only my second partner). In the beginning of the relationship, I was surprised to find out that my bf had 6 partners total, and only two of whom were from serious relationships. The other four sexual encounters were "flings". Apparently, his first love was in 9th grade and she ended up cheating on him. Subsequently, he went through depression and his way of coping was trying to forget her, so he had 4 flings until senior year. He admitted to me that he acted stupidly in coping with his heartbreak, therefore, after his second relationship, he didn't make the same mistake by sleeping around to fill that void in his heart.

I know the past is in the past and I completely trust my bf, I still get disturbed and bothered when I think of my man having been attracted enough to have slept with 4 girls. I am the type that must really truly love the other person to give my body. Maybe this is just a difference between men and women physiology? Or am I just a prude? There are days when I get bothered by this (I already talked about it with my bf) when I picture him having slept with 4 other girls...

I'm pretty sure I'm being prude about this. So what I am asking from you guys is your take on WHY I shouldn't dwell so much on the past.

p.s. we've both been tested. we're clean.

His past sounds way cleaner than normal to me for that age group.  But most important you can't evaluate him using your rules for behavior.  He is a guy with large amounts of testosterone pumping through him which makes his behavior different.  Furthermore in my opinion, I am 38, guys who have had a few relationships are less likely to cheat because they know what is out there and how valuable you are whereas less experience guys may always be looking for that bigger better thing over the rainbow.  If he is as great of a guy as you say, don't punish him for his past, you will definitely regret it.
