I want to bump this thread because you mentioned the book "Breaking out of Food Jail." I just started reading it and it's changing my life everyday.

Thanks for the advice, everyone, on spreading calories out throughout the day. I'm having the same phenomenon with my abdominal area and would love to find a way to ease the discomfort.

I hate it when people comment on how small I am. I'm a waitress, and when customers make a comment like "Look at how small you are, you must never eat the food here!" I look at them and say "I struggle with anorexia everyday" and then I take their orders. It's extremely empowering to be able to shut people up like that by not playing their little game.
Weight Gain Favorite weekday meals? Jun 11 2008

I love bean salads. My favorite is a three-bean salad with black-eyed peas, garbanzo beans, and red kidney beans, and it has a light dressing with a bit of seseme oil, cumin, coriander, lemon, jalapeno, and chinese chives. I like to eat a bowl of this with whole grain crackers, like triscuits, instead of a fork ;-) Then, with my leftover garbanzo beans, I'll make a huge batch of hummus to go on toast and raw veggies for snacks.

Actually I love all sorts of exotic salads. I love this moroccan carrot and date salad I found that uses a pound of carrots, chopped dates and raisins, and a dressing with olive oil, cumin, paprika, coriander, cinamon, and salt. Sounds strange, doesn't it? It's delicious, and it goes great with any snack or meal (not a meal in itself--not high enough cals, not nutritiously dense enough)

For rice salads, since it's summer, I'll make an Indian yoghurt and rice salad

Oh and spinach salads...I eat maybe 1/2 a pound of spinach a day. I like sweet and tangy ones, with dried cranberries and goat cheese but with a tangy basalmic dressing, and smiple salty ones. My favorite one right now uses raisins and toasted pine nuts, but for the dressing you mash together anchovies, garlic, salt, and some other spice I'm not remembering, and then whisk in red wine vinegar and olive oil.

And I've finally gotten into the habit of making smoothies. The trick is they can't just be a meal--they have to go with a meal! I drink them like a person drinks a glass of water at a meal. This is a good way for me to get more dairy into my diet, along with giving me a wider variety in the fruits I eat. I don't eat a handfull of berries a day, but I do drink a handfull!

Then I do the normal PB sandwiches, baked potatos with cottage cheese and salsa on top, eggs of all kinds, steamed veggies, sandwiches with whatever's in my fridge...

The key is making sure you always have atleast 2 veggies, 2 starches, 2 proteins, and 2 fruits in your fridge to create a little dish for when you haven't planned on a meal. I can't just whip up those salads whenever I want to, I have to plan. But I also make sure I have a lot if I don't plan.

Ka, I don't think I gave you an actual strategy! If you ask me, you should go to the store and buy marinated tofu and put it in everything for as many days as it takes for you to get tired of it. Who cares if your nutrition might be a little more protein-y than usual, a couple days won't kill you. I'm doing that with beans right now and it's so much better than denying myself beans and trying to replace them with baby carrots. I've also had to do it with peanut butter, and boy am I sure glad I don't crave it like I used to anymore.

hate to say this, but it sounds like you've got the case of dieteritis, where a dieter assumes every malfunction in their body is due to eating poorly or exercising wrong! Even a sore toe could be a result of not eating enough protein! (can't we all predict this as a future thread?)

Coming home at my lowest weight this summer and hearing my friends and parents friends comment on how much younger I looked. Strangers who guessed my age thought I was maybe 17, 18. I'm 21. When I was 16 and at a higher weight I looked older than what my actual age is now. I get carded for alcohol now when I didn't at 16. I had to start buying clothes in the junior's department, and my breasts had shrunk to a size smaller than what they were when I was in 7th grade. To me it meant my ED had me regress into girlhood again, which symbolized how I couldn't take care of myself anymore and that there was a huge disconnect between my intellect and my emotions. I was not in a place of body or mind where a 21 year-old woman should be.

I don't mind being cold all of the time. I don't mind not being able to do pilates because my bones grind into the mat. I don't even mind the pulsing veins visible in places that are dying for fat. But I am not okay witht he childlike-nature of an ED mind, and if I'm going to emotionally mature then my body is just goingt to have to follow with me. And I'm going to have to be a big girl and get over it.

I'm eating 2600 calories a day and that's been enough to bring me from 110 to my current weight of 117 in about two months. My goal is 125, and then I'll go back to maybe 2100 calories, but being able to eat 2600+ calories sure is fun! Eventually it would be in my best interests to be at about 130-135 (height is 5'7)

When I was still dieting I used to go to the store that had a grind-your-own PB machine when I had a PB craving and I'd fill up a to-go salad dressing container with it and sneak out of the store. It's like 1.5 ounces, and when you really want some PB you can go get it and not worry about eating an entire jar. Plus, you'll be sure that you really want it if you have to go all the way over to the store to get it.

Now I just make sure that I always allow myself 1-2 ounces for breakfast everyday, and after a month of doing this I don't sneak to the fridge anymore just to eat spoonfulls at 10 in the morning. I love having it as a regular part of my diet. Sometimes I make myself eat it even if I'm not craving it because I know that the next day I'll want it even MORE and I might go overboard.

Hmm, I ride my bike everyday and I promise you, when I see someone overweight riding a bike I don't think anything other than "Wow another person who loves biking as much as I do! Ooooh the sun feels so good! Weee...." And I think that when I pass anyone on a bike ;-)

Biking will be great for you. I'tll be easy on your knees, and if anyone gives you crap you can go run em over.

lmao yes i'm the calorie hater! infact, if i could consume 0 calories a day, i'd be the happiest lassie alive. :)

.

uh you probably wouldn't be alive. and if you were, you'd be pretty tired. and I'd take a PB sandwich over cake or cookies any day. One sandwich might be the caloric equivalent to a large cookie, but the PB is like an injection of energy syrum right to my gut.
Weight Gain How did you begin? Jun 03 2008
13:32 (UTC)
To follow my meal plan I just had to completely let go of trying to make myself feel good about eating 2300 calories a day, and just do it. I was very stern with myself, and even though my ED voice was screaming at me when I ate breakfast after an 800 calorie dinner the night before, I ate breakfast because I did not give myself any other choice. If I'm going to grow up to be a mature adult, I need to begin that process at the breakfast table.

A month ago I was having the same problem like, "Oh my god life is so hard how do I eat more than a small toddler eats?" but what I was really saying is "how can I do this and not feel guilty?" Well, I can't. But that doesn't mean I don't need to keep eating.

Also it helped me to stop logging calories all together. I still keep track of how much I burn during exercise so I can eat it back right after I get home from the gym. Otherwise, I take it a meal at at ime and make sure every time I sit down to eat I consume 500 calories minimum.

Be vigilant in following your meal plan, mature at meal times, and afterwards take antacids. Recovering is not dieting: when you're anorexic, you need to eat even when you don't think you're hungry.

backerfan, the belt is as tight as it will go (another great motivation for weight gain!) and it still slips. A sportsbra would be great, I need a new one anyway. But tape sounds so much more affordable...

Another problem with the chest belt thing is it sort of rubs at my rib cages in a weird way so when I'm working out and swishing my arms at my side, it moves around up and down over the same rib, on the same spot, over and over and over...

Thanks for the tip about the alarm sound. I knew I could turn the normal volume down, but not the alarm volume.

I know, sugarsweet! My F11 and I have become so close, we are always checking in on one another now. It's getting to be a little over-protective at times...and not to mention demanding (does it even know how hard it is to get up to 80% HR capacity??). But we're learning how to negotiate. Yoga is my time, spinning class is F11's time.

I think tri raining might be a little much for someone striving to recover from overexercising.

Here's another routine to try, that will maintain cardio, strength, and flexibility without overexercising:

* cardio 3x per week. One long workout (90 minutes), one interval session, and one medium (30-45 minutes)
* weight training 2x per week
* yoga or pilates, 1-2x per week

Another thing to try is to train for a race. I'd suggest a running 10K.  That would put an upper limit on your workouts, because you don't need to do more than 40-60 minutes for race distance, plus warmup and cooldown.  Then you would also have a goal to train for, instead of just continuing to workout til you get tired.

I just found this great race calendar for Thailand
http://www.thailandmarathon.org/upcoming.shtm l

wow, 90 minutes of cardio? Does that mean 90 minutes of your hr being in the 70%-80% capacity zone? That sounds really tough

I miss the gym and am going to start going again.  I stopped going about 3 weeks ago when I started trying to gain weight.  I feel lazy and tired all the time now and have had no motivation to do anything.  I'm going to go to the gym today and walk for a while with a short run at the end.  I can't wait!  I really think that moderate exercise will help my mood and actually help me to keep motivated to gain because I won't feel so flabby.

Hey great, I was getting ready to reply half-way through reading your post with "take a walk around the track!" but you already know what to do. nice, easy exercise feels JUST as blissful as an hour-long session with your heart rate in the 80% range but it doesn't leave you exhausted and hungry afterward

My best tip for following your meal plan:

You're going to hit the spot in the day where you're at 700 calories or so, and you're going to say "Okay, I know I can just do 700 more and stop at 1400, even though my plan wants me to eat about 1400 more and stop at 2100. I'll just lie and write down that I ate 1400..."

You're still sick at this point. You're eating more, but you're still confusing your eating disorder voice with your recovery voice. Disobey the eating disorder voice. You don't have to disagree with it, but do not follow it. Your ED does not want to help you. Disobey it one meal (and for me, each moment I have the chance to over-exercise..) at a time.

I'm still doing this now. My head is screaming at me when I put an entire cup of milk in my cereal instead of 1/4 of a cup, but I disobey that voice day in and day out. I eat the cereal, sometimes I feel terrible, but I always eat the cereal. You just have to.

Best part about this tip is after a month or so you get to experience going to bed and waking up without terrible starvation cramps! And you can STILL eat breakfast on those mornings. You can have breakfast everyday! I'm so exciting writing this, I'm goign to go eat breakfast! Right now!

I've had a difficult time getting used to the idea of protein powder because most brands, one scoop is only 9 grams of protein which is only one serving of protein in my meal plan. Why do I need to add it so I can make a "protein shake" when I can make a tuna sandwich with a lot more protein?

If you want a change from peanut butter, I'd try cashew butter. The flavors are similar but cashew butter is a little more subtle. Almond butter can be sort of shocking for those just weaning off of pb ;-)

And for those lucky enough to live in the pacific NW, there's a company in California that distributes walnut butter to organic markets up and down the coast. Definitely worth looking into.

If I ride my bike against the wind, up a hill for 20 minutes I can burn 100 calories. But I weigh very little and have good cardiovascular health so it takes a lot of work for me to burn a lot of calories.

Get your heart rate up to 150 for 10 minutes and maybe that will work.

the hungry-girl website is just a big pop-up ad for every dieting gimmic food on the market. i saw the noodles at the grocery store yesterday and they are really expensive for the little amount of nutrients in them, so I haven't tried them. Why don't you go buy a package and let the community in on how they taste? i'd find that helpful.

Are you recovering from an eating disorder? I'm 5'6 and when I was 100 pounds and recovered to 130 pounds, I felt the same way. I actually relapsed and lost it all again, and now have to go through the pain of yo-yoing back to 130.

It's hard to feel every pound on your body. It's like, not only are your legs bigger...but your face looks different, too. And your skin, it's a different hue. It feels different to sit on the floor and in the bathtub and it's not as easy to do pull-ups with you have 30 more pounds on you. Everyone says it, it's cliched, but it really is true: that's what being healthy is. Being healthy is accepting that you won't always be skinnier than your friends and your pants won't always be falling off your hips and it means having a softer, more mature looking face. At least that's what I've read. It's easier said than done, but everyday I try to remind myself these things as the scale slowly creeps up and my stomach starts to take shape.
