Hi guys! I'm so glad we're all trying out this minimum workout thing and flutterby!!!! You sound like you're doing awesome! Your tone even sounds happier! I'm so glad you're do the couch to 5K! That's so great. I just weighed in and I was:

CW: 124 (That's down from last week!!!)

I've been running the stairs and they've been kicking my ass!! I love it!! I didn't log my food this week, just ate healthy and had small portions. With working out, i don't think i could have over eaten but I really need to start logging again next week. I don't usually log on the weekends.

I'll be running the stairs again this evening, gotta wait til it cools off a bit.

Have a great weekend!!!!

Saw it!!! It was pretty crazy. I feel really awful for those woman but there has to be a way to stop them like locking the fridge or bedroom door??? Or how about only keeping healthy food in the fridge and cupboards? It would've been awesome if they gorged on carrots and celery!!

Do you all think that that "minimum" is good enough? I just kind of threw it out there. That's kind of my default workout if I don't get to something more. I think it's a great all around way to just stay active. Well, cool, I'm glad you guys are into it. So my goal from now on is to at least complete that minimum but preferably do more.

Happy Hump Day!!!

Flutterby,

I think it's so cool that you're going to workout with your little bro. I have a 12 year old bro and he's about 5'5" and 180!!!!

My whole family is concerned for his health. I don't live with him anymore but I'd love to help him lose weight somehow. He has terrible eating habits and no self-control whatsoever. I'm really scared for him because he'll be starting high school next year and I don't want him to the the "fat kid", as mean as that sounds, I know how cruel high school and kids can be and I just want to deter that. Let me know how it goes with your bro overtime.

Hey guys,

I had a thought just now... and you all tell me what you think...

Would you all be interested in a little "challenge" to kind of spice up our workouts?

This is what I was thinking and everyone's input and suggestions are fully welcomed. What if we created a minimum workout plan and at the very least all we have to do per day is complete our minimum workout. And it won't matter in what order you do the workout, just as long as you do it, just as long as we all do it.

I feel like as this group that we've created, we need to push ourselves more and encourage each other to get out and be active. I love that we can just rant and rave about what's going on with us but more than anything (and I think you'll agree) I would like us all to see results and to meet our short and long term goals. My hopes with this minimum workout would be that we'll all start to at least do the minimum and inevitably, we'll want to work harder and harder and hopefully we'll all start doing much more than a minimum workout etc.

This is just an example of what I'm talking about and I think as a collective, we should all figure out what works best for everyone and then decide on what our minimum workout is:

30 crunches

30 push-ups

20-30 minutes of cardio

Something like that. Something that we can all manage and something that's just going to get us all going. Like I said this would be a minimum workout for the day, so you can do 10 crunches in the morning and 20 later or whatever, break it up however suits you best, etc. And of course if you can and want to do more, do it.

K, well this was a long thought and a long post so I apologize for that but I'd love to hear what you all think.

Hi all,

Happy Monday!

I had a good weekend over all. I ran the stairs on Friday afternoon and did my ab exercises and used my pilates band for my arms (i'm really starting to like that thing).

I didn't work out on Saturday but I ate pretty well all day. I had a veggie wrap for lunch and a veggie curry with basmati rice for dinner (I probably should've chosen brown rice :( maybe next time).

On Sunday, I woke up at 5am and went running 2 miles on the beach then I broke out my weights and a towel and went to town working out my abs and arms for another 40 minutes or so. It was pretty intense. I don't usually do things like that but my boyfriend dives and I figured I'd join him this time. So while he was diving in the ocean, I was working out on land. 5am on a Sunday was pretty crazy but I'm so glad I did it. I went to a bbq in the evening for a friends b-day and managed to eat a veggie burger, a handful of chips and a few bites of pasta salad. It wasn't like the most nutritious meal but I didn't binge and I avoided the deserts so all in all, I felt pretty good.

Today, is a whole other story. At my work, when it's your b-day you get to choose a restaurant and everyone pays for your meal. So today we had a b-day and the person chose IHOP (it's a pancake place incase you haven't heard of it). I decided to let loose and eat some pancakes. I ended up ordering from the children's menu and got the silver dollar pancakes which probably totals two full pancakes. I didn't add butter and I just lightly drizzled maybe a teaspoon of syrup for each pancake. It was delicious! So to redeem myself, I'm gong to run the stairs at least 7X's tonight and definitely work out my abs.

I'm still on my vegginner kick so dinner should be light and healthy.

Have a good week everyone!

Subway, try zig zagging your calories. Eat high one day and low the next, that usually works for me. I think your body gets used to eating the same amount of calories for too long and then plateaus. Giving it more cals to burn one day and less the next will kind of wake it up again, things won't be so humdrum. Your body will notice something different is happening and start reacting.

On the bright side, you're staying at the same weight, not gaining so that's not too bad. Have fun on your vacay and forget about counting calories, you'll enjoy yourself more!

I had another good workout day. I worked on abs in the morning and then after work I ran the stairs near my house 6 times up and down! Then I went over to the grass and stretched, worked my abs again and worked my arms out using one of my pilates rubber bands. I feel pretty good. I ate well for breakfast and dinner but I'm not so sure about lunch. I went out with some co-workers and we ate at a salad shop. They make your salad fresh right in front of you but I'm afraid their dressings are really high in fat. I should have asked for dressing on the side but I didn't want to be difficult. At least it was a salad and not a burger but it's bothered me all day not knowing how many calories I ate.

My fiance and I singed up for the Nike 10K on 8/31. We have 17 days to prep for a 6 mile race. I have no hopes of coming close to winning so we're just gonna focus on finishing in under an hour and a half. I hope that's not too ambitious.

How is everyone doing? I hope you're all making progress. I don't feel any different from last week, so I don't expect to see a drop in weight at tomorrows weigh in but I am glad that I stuck to my workouts this week. I hope I can keep it up. We'll see what the scales says.

Flutterby, 8 miles?! That's awesome!!!! Keep it up!

I didn't have time to fit in a full workout yesterday, just some crunches but today I plan on running the stairs again after work. I already worked my abs this morning but I'm going to try to fit in a few more sets after my stair climb.

How is everyone else doing? Subway? Veggigeek? Sab?

Happy Thursday!

I had the same problem when I first started, I think most people run into this. No matter what, you're doing your body and health a great service. Keep at it. You WILL eventually see results, there's no doubt about that. I used to post my frustrations and one day I decided it wasn't only about how I look (although I know it's a huge part of it) and realized what a great thing was doing for myself. I'm literally extending my life. Keep doing what you're doing, you'll be fine. :)

flutterby, tomorrow is a new day. Start fresh and undo all of the yummy foods you ate today (I'm kind of jealous!) I think a cheat day here and there is necessary. Just don't feel bad about it and give up. As long as you can jump back on the wagon, you deserve a binge day once in a while. May I recommend "vegginner"??? It's pretty awesome.

You may already do this, but try deciding what you're going to eat the night before or first thing in the morning and measure everything out into small tupperware or baggies and stick to it. Just don't eat outside of what you've given yourself. I go into work with 8-10 small tupperware containers filled with my lunch and a good amount of snacks because I'm a hungry person. I literally have to eat about every hour and a half or two. When I don't pack my lunch, I end up eating a lot more. I recommend small containers (like 1/2 cup) too since you can only fill them so much. It's a great way to portion.

Anyway, don't feel bad, just move on and stick to one goal at a time.

Welcome Sab, the more the merrier!

What part of Alberta... I have friends in Lethbridge. I've actually driven from LA to Lethbridge to visit them a few times...really beautiful drive. I've also driven from Lethbridge to Calgary. The next time I have the urge to drive for a few weeks, I'll have to hit you up.

I woke up this morning feeling pumped! I climbed the huge set of stairs in Santa Monica, check out these pics: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/PGHG7VCDrklvdA -QHUTHmw?select=LrT8wFitRbpuPM-BXal0IA

I ran up and down 5X. And just around the corner is this huge grassy center divider where people finish off with weights, sit-ups, etc. so I worked my abs and did a quarter mile of lunges with a quarter mile sprint back. I'm feeling great. I haven't eaten breakfast yet, so I'm really going to strategize here. I don't want all of my hard work to go to waste. I'm working from home this week and I tend to get up for snacks if I need a break so today I have everything for lunch already set aside in small tupperwares and then of course vegginner for dinner, lol.

I'm supposed to meet up with the marathoners tonight for a few miles of running but I'm considering not since I just got in a great workout.... we'll see if I can find the motivation to workout some more.

Good luck today today girls, I hope we all reach our goals!!!!

Flutterby, that's awesome!!! Congrats!

I feel like I may have found my motivation too... at least for the past few days. I've been working from home and every hour or so, I drop to the floor and do a dozen or so crunches and other ab exercises. I'm about to go on a run. I've been running about 1.5 miles around my neighborhood and Tuesdays and THursdays as often as I can I run with my marathon friend and his team, so that's my plan for tomorrow.

I weighed in on Friday and forgot to post

CW:127

My little bro stayed over for the weekend and for the most part I ate fine but I did have a grilled cheese and fries on Saturday at the bowling alley, oh well. My boyfriend and I are going veggie for the week to detox. We make something called "vegginner", sounds funny I know. It's basically a steamed veggie, couscous or brown rice, and a veggie pattie or tofu. We love it. So I went out and bought all the makings for a weeks worth of vegginner. My plan of attack for the week is to have my lunches prepared the night before even if I'm working from home that way I don't over eat and I'm not tempted to go for the bad stuff. But since it's all gonna be vegetarian this week, I'm not anticipating too much bad food going in me.

The Godiva chocolate is finally gone, LOL! Thanks to yours truly but with the help of many others that were over this weekend. I do keep Skinny Cow Ice cream bars in the fridge for when I need to feed into my sweet tooth so I should be okay.

Veggigeek, what part of Canada are you in? I visit Vancouver at least once a year. I have friends there and besides that, I absolutely love it so I've been a few times just to visit the city. I really want to move there at some point. I work in advertising and Vancouver has a pretty strong advertising scene.

Subway, I know exactly what you mean. I used to feel the same way about running. I was so good at the elliptical trainer I could go for way over an hour and be fine but the second I got on the treadmill, forget about it. About three months ago, I decided I didn't want to pay for my gym membership anymore and instead, I wanted to be more outdoorsy with my exercise routine and that's when I forced myself to start running. Then I started training with my friend who runs marathons and he gave me a really easy running schedule that's practically fool proof. You start by running 5 minutes and walking 1 minute and you do this for about an hour twice a week and slowly, you'll build your endurance and running is going to become so much fun. I literally have fun when I run (and I didn't mean for that to rhyme). I really encourage you to keep at it, running is so great for your body. Now that I know what running actually feels like, like beyond the aching lungs,  I don't think I will ever stop. Right now, I can run about 3 miles with maybe one or two 1 minute breaks and I'm assuming if I continue, I'll be running in the double digits at some point in the next year. Try it out and let me know how you feel.

Have a great week everyone!!!!

Hi all,

Hope you all had a great day. So, I did end up working out my abs last night and I was really active today. I went hiking in the morning with my dogs, it's about a 2 1/2 mile hike and then in the afternoon I went on a mile long run with them and came home and worked my abs. I still want to do some arm exercises before knocking out, but all in all, I had a great workout. I also ate much better today:

breakfast

1/2 pita with 1 tbsp organic peanut butter

a cup of diced watermelon and a cup of raspberries

lunch

the other 1/2 of pita with 2 slices of deli turkey meat

1/2 cup of raspberries (we bought a pallet from Costco, so I've been eating raspberries like crazy before they spoil!)

a cup of noodle soup which was 1.5 g of fat and 130 cals.

snack

handful of air popped popcorn

skinny cow icecream pop 80 cal./ 1 g fat

handful of fresh cauliflower (one of my favs)

dinner

homemade chicken burrito using a whole wheat fat free tortilla and some left over chicken that I cut up and heated. I added a green salsa and black beans. It was pretty delish!

I had dinner pretty early, around 4:30, so I'm sure I'll want a snack before going to bed. I grow my own tomatoes and cucumbers so I plan on dicing those up with some balsamic and that'll be my snack.

No Godiva today!!! The future looks bright!!

So I asked this before but I didn't get a response, do any of you live in LA? I'm looking for a serious workout buddy.

I'm scared for tomorrows weigh in but I'm starting to feel optimistic about getting into a serious workout mode again. I really lost it for about two weeks there. Well, I hope you all did well today. I'll talk to you soon.

is eating 4 pieces of Godiva chocolate sticking to my goals? Aaarrrgh!!! I don't know what's wrong with me these days! I've been really careless and indulgent. I didn't run today, but I've been going on these long walks with my dogs, 3 miles yesterday and 6 miles today. No abs though but the night is still young. I'll let you all know if I actually do my crunches. I'm planning out my meals for tomorrow right now, hopefully I can stick to the program. I don't have work tomorrow, so working out will be much easier.

How is everyone doing?????

I'm still here trying to keep this thread alive. I for one have not given up.

I have to admit, I ate pretty heavy today so far. I ate leftover fetuccini alfredo for breakfast and a bagel and cream cheese for lunch. Grrrrrrrr!!!! I did go on a 3 mile walk with my dogs this morning but that's hardly exercise. My plan is to run after work today even if it's only a few blocks and I gotta do my ab routine... haven't been able to find the motivation lately. I'll keep whoever is still out there posted and I hope you do the same.

Weight Loss Help me out, am I doomed? I cant stand the taste of real food. Aug 05 2008

well I'm no expert, but I'd say you're pretty doomed. The foods you listed is no way for anybody to eat. Forget about what you'll look like on the outside, consider what you're doing to your insides. You're hair and skin will soon follow suit too. They need vitamins and water to stay vibrant and healthy.

Definitely continue to work out. Everything you listed was processed. Consider cutting back on certain food and drink you're currently consuming. Like the monster, for example, that doesn't seem like a hard thing to kick. If you're gonna eat all of that other junk at least limit your liquids to water. And there are substitutes to chicken and beef, what about turkey, fish, or tofu? You NEED lean proteins. Do you like rice? Have some brown rice and black beans. Make it a point to take a multivitamin and a fish oil pill for your hair and skin. Have cereal as a snack instead of laffy taffy. Try drinking a nutritional supplement like ensure instead of a meal, it'll be like drinking a milkshake and you'll get some nutritional value out of it. There has to be a way for you to get your serving of fruits and vegetables, drink V-8 or something or better yet, just suck it up and eat them, it's not that big of a deal. After a while you might start to like one or two. try preparing them different ways.

Where there's a will there's a way. If you really care, you'll figure out what's best for you. I think you know the answer to your own question already. You're doing your health a disservice and everyone will tell you the same.

I didn't have time to do my Friday weigh in last week, so here is this mornings stats.

CW:128 :(

I slacked big time this week. I was busy with planning my engagement party and hardly found time to exercise, however I didn't eat poorly. Oh well, I'll just keep moving forward.

It seems like we've lost a few peeps, huh? Well that's okay. The four or five of us still here is more than enough.

What is everyone doing for your workout today?

I plan on running/walking about 2 miles with my dogs and then focusing on my abs for at lest 20 minutes.

Is anyone in the L.A. area????? I'd love to find some workout buddies.

Whatever happens let's keep each other motivated!!!

Has anyone else heard of this? I just found out about "Couch-to-5K", it's a 6-week online course that trains you to run 3 miles (5K) with ease. I started it on Monday and I think it's fantastic. I just started enjoying running for exercise recently and I like that I can do it with my dogs. I mentioned it before but I've been training for the Long Beach marathon (not to run, just for the pro exercise and advice) and a lot of what I have already learned in the the few weeks training, are in this Couch-to-5K course. If you can find 20 minutes per day, you'll be well on your way to running 3 miles (or more!!). Check it out:

I agree, one day of f***ing up isn't so bad if you recover in time and get back on track. After my pie feast on Saturday I've cut my calories down and upped the exercise and that's how I plan on finishing up the week. Hopefully I see a drop in weight or I at least stay the same by Friday.

Aaaaaaaarrrrrrghhhhh!!!! I had such an awful weekend!!! I totally went over my calorie limit on Saturday. I went to a "pie party"!!!! Hello? WTF?! It was a friends b-day and she doesn't like cake instead she asked people to bring pie and pie is what they brought... about 15 different types!!! I had a small sliver of strawberry cream and a small sliver of apple but this was after a full dinner and in combo with a few glasses of wine!!! I feel like such a heffer today. I tried my best to eat on the lower spectrum of my calorie intake yesterday and I'm doing the same today. I think I'm going to try to stay between 1200-1400 (I usually consume between 1600-1800) for a few more days to even myself out. On the bright side I did bike to the party and it was about 4 miles round-trip. Doubt I burned off the pies, but it was a start. I'm running today for sure... I can't believe I ate pie :( We'll see what I've done to myself at this Fridays weigh in.

pokeme, My best friend has the WiiFit and I try to use it whenever I'm by her house.  It's kinda what got me started into losing the weight.  It's more of a motivational tool than a real workout, but you have a lot of fun while doing it.  I do recommend it to get yourself started and in the mood.

As it is Friday, I shall post my stats.  I'm 19 years old, 5'1" (the doc says 5'0 3/4" but I'm in denial Smile)

CW: 135 (I think my scale is off, so I'm gonna double check tonight with my friend's digital scale; oh and Aunt Flow's almost here, so bloating might be added this week -_-)

GW: 120

I hope to get out and run/jog more.  I also have a stationary bike that I use.  I have a few questions for you guys.  What are some good arm and tummy exercises and how many reps do you do?  I really want to lose this weight, so I figure a good allaround workout would really help me.  Any suggestions are appreciated!

So as far as arm and tummy exercises...

I can only tell you what I do, but I hope it's helpful. I look on youtube for ab exercises and follow them, here's one I like:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=1724nSZdjSc

For arms, I think the best thing to do is use your own body weight and do push-ups, chair presses, and use resistance bands (they're really great). If I do use weights, i stick to no more than 10lbs. and do multiple reps. You can really hurt yourself if you don't lift weights correctly and I don't know the correct way to lift, so i stick to light weight with lots of reps.

Subwaybusker,

I run almost everyday and I think that when i started I may have been sore but after a while, the soreness goes away. I recommend going for a hard run one day and maybe a jog/walk on the days you're sore until your body gets used to it. After a while, you'll be able to run through the soreness.

Here's some advice: I started training with my friends' marathon training team (I don't plan to run the marathon but I wanted to see if I could handle the training) and the way they do it is they run 5 minutes and walk 1 minute, run 5 walk 1, and they keep this up for about 1 1/2 hours two days per week. After a few weeks they'll increase the amount of time we run but for now, that's where we 're at and it makes it really manageable. I'm not a good runner but I can run for 5 minutes and not get too tired so this plan is fantastic for starters. Let me know if you try it out.

So, it being our first Friday, here are my stats:

CW: 124!!!!! (I just realized I lost two pounds!!!!! and that wasn't from a morning weigh in so, it might actually be lower!)

GW: 115

GW by labor day: 118

My plan: zig zagging between 1400-1800 cals/day with at least a 500 calorie deficit.

My usual exercise involves running between 1-2.5 miles per day and working on abs and strengthening my core with a pilates dvd.

On some days, I hike or climb steps in place of the running, but I try to do abs daily (try is the operative word, lol!)

I'm going to be walking down the isle and I'd rather start prepping myself for the wedding dress sooner than later. Other than just a healthier me overall, this wedding is my motivation. I do a lot of cooking and would love to swap recipes and exercise tips. I just quit the gym and began outdoor workouts and things are going great. I've never been a part of a group so let me know how this will work and I'm 100% in!
