| Weight Loss | Does calorie counting actually work for you? | Apr 19 2009 22:04 (UTC) |

Yes - calorie counting does work for me. last summer I lost 16 pounds and have maintained it for 9 months. Counting calories has made me much more AWARE of what I eat. For me - I plan on eating a lot - I love to eat - however I eat lower calorie foods such as popcorn, sugar free frozen pudding, sugar free frozen treats etc when I feel like binging. Last week I started counting again as I'm going for my last 7 lbs to reach my goal weight. It's probably going to take two months but I feel pretty confident that I'll get there! |

I'm faced with the same challenges. With only 1200 cal's you've got to make them count. I had something pretty good last night that was low in calories and fille me up - it was sauteed zucinin and mushrooms. 3 cups sliced zuchini 1 cup or more of sliced mushrooms 1 diced tomato 3 cloves of garlic sliced diced onions (however many you can stand!) 1 tsp olive oil. a few tablespoons of parm. cheese heat olive oil - throw in veggies. Stir - add a little chicken broth as needed until veggies are soft. Sometimes I turn the burner down, put the cover on and leave them for a bit . Sprinke parm. cheese generously eat and enjoy. There are many variations especially in the summer when fresh veggies are plentiful and cheap. I can't remember the cal count exactly but for two servings it was somewhere aroungd 150 calories which is great for something tastey! |

I eat about 700 cals from morning until I get home from work at around 5:00 then another 500 - 600 for dinner & snacks. I found that if I don't space my eating throughout the day I become light headed and during long boring meetings that isn't a good thing!!! |

| Motivation | keep eating too much at night | Apr 12 2009 12:50 (UTC) |

I confess - I'm a nighttime eater too. Here's what works for me - I plan on eating at night and reserve a number of calories for it. I eat air popped popcorn, frozen sugar free pudding cups (delish), frozen non fat yogurt, etc etc. Sticking to a diet is hard enought without trying to remake who I am..... |

mem18 - I eat peanut butter quite often ( as in daily!) In fact last year it was part of my weight loss program and within a few months I lost almost 20 lbs. It's been part of my maintenance plan and I've kept the weight off for 6 or 7 months now. I'm back to losing and will include it. PB is a wonderful food! |

I make a super soup that really fills me up. Usually I brown some ground turkey or chicken w/chopped onions and celery, throw in lots of chopped veggies (whatever I have on hand), add enough broth, V-8 or even stewed tomatos so that it's more of a stew than a soup, season w/thyme or whatever seems good at the time, and simmer for 30 minutes to an hour depending what I've added for veggies. It fills me up, tastes good and is low calorie. What could be better? |

Thanks for bringing this up as I always wondered how other people allocated their calories throughout the day. I have 700 to 750 from morning until I get home from work around 5:00. I choose low calorie highly nutritious foods that keep me full. The final 900 I consume for dinner and TV snacks. I realize that nighttime snacking isn't the best for ones diet but I've never been able to kick the habit so I've decided to just go with it. It seems to be working well as I reached my goal the first week of August and have been able to maintain with relative ease as long as I'm midful of this schedue. Also - I try to keep my calories below what's required during the week days so if I want to splurge on the weekends I can without worrying about it. It's a process isn't it? |

I eat clean and have for many years - but as its been mentioned its a gradual process and I'm not a fanatic about it. What I've found is that I CRAVE fresh foods and simply don't enjoyed eating canned, frozen or processed foods.

| Weight Loss | Busy People, how do we do this.... | Jan 04 2009 15:39 (UTC) |

Wow! I no longer feel sorry for my busy self! I'm dealing with the same things many of you have mentioned, demanding full time job, school, family obligations bla bla bla!!! It looks like we are all in good company. My best tip is on Saturday or Sunday, make a big pot of oatmeal, soup and a large salad and dish it into 5 portions for weekday breakfast and lunches. I've found that its an easy way to stay on track. I grab my oatmeal, soup and salad, a light & fit yogurt, peice of fruit and a serving of almonds. Sometimes I mix it up (rice and veggies instead of soup etc) but I've found (and I'm maintaining) that this combination keeps me on track and allows me to eat throughout the day. Most importantly, because it's relatively low in calories under 800 I'm able to occasionly indulge on the weekends or occasional week night withough gaining weight. Also, its so nice not to have to think about what I'm going to eat - for me it would be wasted energy. Another tip - and its probably been mentioned - I ALWAY ALWAYS ALWAYS cook for my family for two nights. For me it would be a complete waste of my time to come up with a new dish and then spend the time cooking it every night. I save about an hour and a half a week by doing this. Regarding exercise - I don't have the inclination to join a gym. Something about it screams temporary to me. The last thing I want to do it to make a temporary change - I want my weight loss to be permenant. So with this in mind I park my car 1/2 mile from work and walk. It takes an extra 5 - 10 minutes but its worth it because I feel so much better when I get to work and when I get back to my car at the end of the day. I ALWAYS take the stairs (2 - 3 flights depending on where you enter the building) and try to schedule a lunch walk evey week of so with friends to catch up. I feel motivated! |

Funny - I did the same thing. I've been fine up until last night. I had two pieces of fudge and a large scoop of apple crisp. Its not the end of the world and I'm not going to feel guilty about it. It was delicious, I enjoyed it and I'm back to normal this morning :) |

| Foods | does it matter what you eat if you don't go over your calories? | Dec 19 2008 19:23 (UTC) |
|
If you ate 1300 calories of just junk you'd still lose weight. The problem in eating just junk is that the chances of your being able to stick with your weight loss program is slim to none as you'd be eating nothing but empty calories. You'd be missing the protien, whole grains, veggies, fruits etc that fill you up, leave you satisfied and nourish your body. Plus you'd be constantly crashing from your sugar high.

Although I agree with the last few posts, I think it makes sense to keep a rough estimate in your head. For example, potatos, couple of carrots and a few pieces of stew meat, a little gravy, I would round off to about 400 - 500 calories depending on the serving size. Personally, I'd steer clear of dumplings because they are probably pretty high calorie. Or - have a dumpling but forgo desert. Or you could eat light during the day and simply indulge! Now - enjoy the meal with your friends and forget it! |

A friend of mine lost weight and looked fantastic! Honestly I didn't even think about losing weight until she lost weight and I thought if she can do it why not me? Once I made up my mind I lost almost 20 lbs in about 4 months and have maintained since August. I'd like to lose another 6 or so to bring me below 140 (I'm 45 and 5'6") which should get rid of the last lumps and bumps without looking haggard! |

Hello - I had the same problem and have solved it with planned snacks while I"m at work which made all the difference. In fact I'm maintaining and still follow the same schedule I did while dieting. I have breakfast at 7am (old fashioned oatmeal) - snack at 10am (non fat yogurt, alomnds, an apple etc) - lunch at noon (soup, veggies and rice, salad w/a protein etc) and snack at 2. and...as littleshelly's mentioned water, water water! |

I'm 5' 6" 45 years old and (happily!) weigh 142. I don't go to the gym, have a desk job, but I park 1/2 mile from work, walk three flights of stairs several times a day etc. etc. etc. I've been maintaining for four months and have been eating anywhere from 1500 - 2000 a day without gaining an oz.

I love leftovers for the reasons that eveyone else mentioned. In fact I always alway always make enough extra to ensure that I have leftovers. Cooking every day can be a real drag. I find if I cook say every other day I put more into my meals if that make sense. Homemade leftovers are good - but takeout or fast food leftovers taste like lard - yuck! |

Original Post by awarnica: I'm not sure if I agree. Lean hot pockets (broccoli & cheese) are the only frozen food that I keep in the house. I do because by Friday I need something quick and easy that I don't have to mess with. They are about 250 calories, pair it with a salad and it's a quick meal. I wouldn't want to have one every day but they are good in a pinch. At $2.50 for two servings I think its a bargain. |

On Sundays I make a pot of soup, rice w/veggies, salad etc and portion them into containers. Every day I grab a container, peice of fruit, yogurt and maybe something like almonds. It makes work days easier because I'm not thinking "what should I have for lunch" or tempted by the many eateries. |
