| Weight Loss | Ideas for junk food avoidance that roomies bring in... | Nov 28 2009 02:07 (UTC) |

Thank you everyone for the great ideas. I am trying to make this roomie situation work out in order to survive as a college student. I don't have a lot of will power but maybe investing in a 2nd fridge and some pantry space - I can make this work. If they are in the cabinet then I am waaay less likely to eat them but sometimes go looking for them. Thank you so much for the ideas. -uneeq- |

| Motivation | A new (?) idea for mini-goal "rewards" | Nov 27 2009 17:09 (UTC) |

It really is an awakening when you look at it from that point of view. Not only did this remind you of what you've lost and to keep on going but you also helped out a charity by donating during a very struggling time (I assume they are struggling because of the economy right now and there isn't a lot to give). I really like your idea and I hope to be able to come back in here and say I've done the same (weightloss and donating). Thanks for sharing!! -uneeq- |

| Foods | CC database concerning chicken | Jun 26 2009 17:15 (UTC) |

Some of the fat will seep into the chicken. I would recommend buying skinless bonless chicken to avoid that from happening. If you still want to use bone in chicken with skin, it is okay to cook with skin on it and then remove once it's cooked. Even the South Beach Diet talks about cornish hens the way they are are then removing the skin. I would log it as skinless because you aren't consuming the skin. Hope that helps. -uneeqme |

| Vegetarian | Soy Chorizo | Apr 22 2009 14:01 (UTC) |

Original Post by fluffydragon: Oh my! I didn't stop to think about the casing and I ate it. Obviously it didn't kill me but its good infomation to know. I read the package and couldn't find anywhere if it was okay or not okay to eat the casing and I could find nothing about it so I assumed it was okay. I made some gulosh and added it the second time I ate it (and took off the casing). There were beans, canned tomatoes, oinion, soy chorizo (instead of morningstar crumblers - which I find difficult to use for some reason), noodles, and some spices. I find that not many spices (if any) are needed because the soy chorizo does a great job spicing up the dish. -Uneeqme

Edit -- I just realized the picture did not come through. If anyone wants a picture of it, send me a message with email address and I'll send it to you. =) |

Excellent! Thank you so much for your reply! I wanted to start this tomorrow (its always a Monday when you start these things...isn't it? lol). There is a great website that gives recipes for phase 1 and phase 2 dinners. It is here if you want to look at it.

I am wondering if the tv dinners tell you if they are phase 1 or phase 2....does anyone know? I want to start the south beach diet but after being vegetarian for so long I am skeptical to cook beef or seafood. (I dont eat pork and can cook chicken). I thought I could use the tv dinners as an alternative to cooking fish and beef. Thanks in advance..... |

| Weight Loss | I gained a pound!!! But, I did the right stuff, I don't understand!! | Feb 17 2009 02:55 (UTC) |

I find that when I workout, I want to eat more. I crave carbs like mad crazy! I've been really good this week with staying away from them but haven't lost any weight - I've only gained a pound. It is best to be mindful that working out adds weight in muscle and loses it in fat. Muscle weighs more than fat. Don't focus so much on the scale as your intake of food and water, how much you exercise, and how your clothes fit.

Hey jdroller - I have to agree with your running buddy. When you run that kind of distance yours shoes can break down a lot faster and the shape (form), soles, and resistence can impact the way your body feels from it. Your knees take most of the brunt of the impact as your foot meets the cement. Here are a couple of great websites to check out: Based on how often you run and how far, it will determine when you need to change your shoes. I started carrying a pedometer with me and adding up my steps at the end of my run to keep track of when I change my shoes. The website says to change every 350-550 miles. I only run 1-2 miles a day and 3 days a week. I change my shoes every 400 miles.
Best of luck to you. Uneeqme |

| Foods | PowerAde ZERO!!!!! | Jun 25 2008 15:57 (UTC) |

skierdude - Thanks for telling us about powerade zero. I love the taste of powerade but have had to start limiting it lately because of the sugar. In my opinion sports drinks like powerade and gatorade are the best after a workout (or anytime really) and I was bummed because it was so high in sugar. I will have to go out and look for it now. Thanks for sharing the info.
lileberly - Thank you for sharing the number to call about those drinks. I recently came to the midwest (Missouri) and stumbed upon these drinks in a Family Dollar store. I tried to Mango flavored one (its mixed with something else but can't remember) and was hooked. I tried to cherry limeade but wasn't to impressed with the taste but I'm eager to find the pomegranate flavor. I can buy a 4-pack for $2.00 plus tax. They are yummy and no carbs, no sugar (splenda), no caffiene, naturally flavored and zero calories! |

I have to agree with gi jane. It can become annoying and boring to hear every two weeks that someone has lost weight. I understand from this side what you go through (finding motivation to work out, battling food cravings, and always trying to be on guard to turn down the things that once filled your day - ie soda, chips, candy, etc. You want your Mom to be proud of you and thats a good thing. Tell her. Let her know why you choose to share your results with her so she understands. Everyone in my family is either overweight or obese and I dont want to be part of that side of my family so I can understand. I don't get a lot of support either...mostly overglazed eyes, but I have learned that the only opinion that matters is my own. I think I'm doing good and I know I will continue to do good. Its hard for people that dont have the same obstacle course as you to appreciate your abilities. Keep your head up, you are doing great. |

The sugar (or carbohydrates) in sweets is considered a simple sugar and those found in fruit are considered complex suagars. Here is the run down about the differences of the two: Many people are confused about the differences between simple and complex carbohydrates and many popular diet books seem to only make it more confusing. Carbohydrates are one of three macronutrients in our diets that provide calories. The other two are protein and fat. Carbohydrates provide most of the energy needed in our daily lives, both for normal body functions such as heartbeat, breathing and digestion and for exercise such as cycling, walking and running. Carbohydrates are considered simple or complex based upon their chemical structure and both types contain four calories per gram. Both are also digested into a blood sugar called glucose, which is then used to fuel our bodies for work or exercise. In the past few years, simple carbohydrates have become known as the 'bad' carbs, while complex carbs seem to be designated as the 'good' ones. Although this is based on more hype than science, here are the reasons why:
Most experts recommend that 50 to 60 per cent of the total calories in our diet come from carbohydrates. The bulk of the carbs we consume should be complex and most of the simple ones should come from fruits and milk or yoghurt, which also contain vitamins and minerals. Avoid getting the bulk of your carbs from refined foods high in sugar, since they are usually low in the nutrients we need to maintain health and energy levels. | Weight Loss | How do I log walking with a pedometer? | May 14 2008 13:49 (UTC) |

Original Post by kmleela:
According to a number of places online (with a good reputation and information), a person walks about one mile in 2100 average steps. It takes about 20 minutes to walk a mile. Hope this information is helpful. I was looking at pedometers a few weeks ago, wanting to buy one to help me more accurately record my daily activity and found the Omron HJ -112 Pedometer to be one of the best at a reasonable price. Best of luck to you.... |

Hi pamm915 - I've been here before. Its a little while since I have felt the need to emo eat (thats what I call it). When it has happened to me, I drink a big glass of water or even crystal light. As I search my refidgerator I ask myself if I really want to eat or if something else needs to fill that "empty" spot. If you really feel the need to eat, grab a fruit or vegetable. TV dinners (even Lean Cuisine) are empty calories and generally contain about 17% fat from each entree. Do you have any hobbies? Sewing, Photography/Scrapbooking, computer or system games, etc? I always try to be productive during this time through self improvement options like learning about the credit reporting agency, managing debt, home improvement, taking a class on something I want to learn about, or taking a drive to a local beauty spot (park, water, mountains, etc). You can also do a google search about the specific type of back injury you have to see what excercises you can do - even if it is just a walk around the block. Make sure you consult your doctor first so you don't injure yourself further. Most doctors provide a list of excercises to do with a back injury to help strengthen your back. When you are able to refrain from emo eating - reward yourself with a manicure, pedicure, spa treatment, even a bubble bath or another non food related ways. Best of luck to you... |

| Health & Support | How important is breakfast? | May 12 2008 04:06 (UTC) |

gi jane - Thank you for the website. I will definitely check it out. I do okay in the dairy department. While I don't drink milk, I do drink soy milk (although I just found out it falls under the meat & grains category) and I do eat cheese and yogurt. But when it comes to certain foods, I'm not sure what category and if I do know (like pasta) I have a hard time deciphering good carbs from bad carbs. I guess this is all more of a learning experience then I thought. Thanks again! healthnuttie - I typically eat yogurt or a puffed wheat and soymilk for breakfast. Because I am vegetarian, it seems like breaksfasts are usually more trouble then they are worth. I don't drink milk, I don't eat eggs, I don't eat meat, and I need to stay away from carbs as much as possible (hashbrowns, oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, fried potatoes, etc). So I end up sleeping past breakfast and wait for lunch. I have thought about slim fast shakes and similar products to give me something in the morning. Good idea about the bananas. I had no idea they were a source of fiber. Thanks for the help! rmgarcia - I like the idea of adding in extras to oatmeal, but to be honest - I am not much of an oatmeal fan. It always seems to give me heartburn. I'm not sure why that is but it does. Perhaps I will try a different brand and see if it does the same thing when adding in the extras. Thanks for the ideas! toridl - I recently found a recipe to use tofu and make like a scrambed egg out of it - it looks very yummy and I can't wait to try it. I love veggie burgers and putting them on an english muffin sounds pretty tasty. I used to make the "mcmuffins" and get soy sausage, soy or regular cheese and put it on a english muffiin - those are just yummy!! I've not tried Kashi anything - I thought they only made cereal - perhaps I will keep an eye out for the waffles the next time I'm shopping. Thanks for all the great ideas!! elizajk - Perhaps that is where I've have gone wrong. Thinking breakfast needs to be traditional. Its funny cause when I do make breakfast - I find that I want to put a little bit of everything on my plate and I always assume thats a bad idea because the calories for the day are just whiddling away. Thanks for the advice! meaganmeagan - Thanks for the advice about reducing meal sizes throughout the day. I've gotten so used to eating a large dinner, that it is going to take some training to re-program my habits. Thanks. iridescent-identity - Almond breeze is a milk of some type or a cereal? It does sound good. The soy milk actually doesn't relate back to the vegetarian in me but more because I am allergic to milk. However, nuts don't bother me so if its like a milk - I will try to locate it and have some. Thanks! cerealaddiction - I like the idea of switching up meals. My Mom did that a lot when I was a kid and I really liked it. That is a good idea. Someone else mentioned not eating traditional breakfasts here too. Sounds like a winner to me. I think I'll try it. Thanks!

| Health & Support | Lost 9lbs in 17 days? Is that unhealthy? | May 08 2008 14:55 (UTC) |

Sara308 - If you are newly dieting (first time or have not dieted in a while) it could be some water weight since fast food is high in sodium, your body holds onto the water but when sodium intake reduces you lose water weight. It is commonly said that its typical to lose more weight in the first month then the remainder of the diet or lifestyle change because of the loss of water weight. Is 119lbs your weight after the 17 lb drop or are you 102lbs? At 5'4" you should respecively be in the 110-145 lb range (depending on bone frame, genetics, etc). Also, here is a good article about alcohol and sodium levels. |

bananee- thanks for the reply. my roommate has the same "problem" with eating whatever he wants and never gaining weight. while i do envy him, no doubt, i dont envy what he eats which is nothing but junk and probably not contributing to his overall and prolonged health. he does like fruit but also eats lots of fast food (mcdonalds, kfc, burger king, etc) and not the better kind of fast food like subway either. interesting info about having breakfast is proven to reduce the likelihood of gaining weight. gi-jane - thanks for the reply and information. I usually eat dinner around 6pm and have a snack around 8pm (carrots, apple, etc) and eat the next day around noon-ish for lunch (when I don't eat breakfast - otherwise breakfast is around 7:30am). I usually go to bed around 11pm so it allows for the last snack to digest. the information you gave in your first paragraph makes a lot of sense but i had never thought of it that way. thanks for pointing that out.

| Weight Loss | 5ft 2in girls--what's your goal weight? | May 07 2008 13:42 (UTC) |

I am 5'2" and my goal weight is 140. It sounds like my goal weight is higher then most people that replied to your question but once I get to 140 I can be proud that I accomplished it and re-assess my goal if I feel that 140 is still too heavy for me. BMI charts and most other websites put us in a category of 120-125 pounds but remember it does take into account body frame and other individual factors. I say go for 140 lbs and then re-assess when you hit that goal. It's safe and accomplishable. Best of luck to you.

fringe1000 - I try to eat throughout the day as much as possible. Unfortunately I am so used to eating 2 large meals a day (never been much on breakfast) that eating smaller portions throughout the day is extremely difficult but I am learning and pushing myself to do it every day. du57y - Thank you for your supportive words and kindness. What I meant by dropping 100 calories every two weeks was that right now I am eating 1700 calories and in two weeks I would drop down to 1600 calories and so on until I was down to 1200 calories. Thanks again! vyntagechick - Thank you for the great idea and an example of your daily intake foods. I can't believe how much you get out of 1300 calories. It could be that I am entering in information into the caloric intake section incorrectly but I don't feel I am getting nearly the same amount as you at 1700 calories. It mostly could be to how new I am to counting calories (only been at this about 10 days) and piece mealing everything. I found that when I enter a recipe in I get more then just doing one by one (cauliflower, carrots, grapes, etc). Your information was really helpful. Thank you again! -uneeq- |

sun123 - Chances are if you have never tried cottage cheese then you will most likely not taste the difference between a low fat and "regular" fat. Always buy the small curd - it is much more texture pleasurable. I love cottage cheese!! You can also try it with peaches. Some people get the canned kind which is really good but because of the sugar/syrup it might boost the caloric intake. I'd try some fresh peaches - they are naturally sweet and will still taste great totether. Enjoy! -uneeq- |

| Weight Loss | Cheat day? | May 05 2008 14:51 (UTC) |

Don't give yourself a reason to skip out on what you have worked so hard for. One of the things that helps me remember that is I really don't want to work off the calories I already worked off. The other day I wanted to emo eat (as I call it) and decided to make speghetti instead and I had 1 and 1/2 cups (also known as 540 calories. I love pastas and they have always been the hardest thing to walk away from but it sure beats going out and having a veggie burger and french fries with gravy and cheese (also called poutine) and a diet soda. So I wagered my emo eating down from possible a 3000 cal meal to about 540 and I was still satisfied and didn't go over my goal calories of 1700 daily (although it was verrrrry close). I don't have cheat days but if I feel I want or need something then I find the best option to get what I want and stay where I need to be. Right now the only thing I am counting is calories (I am still learning to manage the rest of it all....fat, sugar, etc) so when I want something sweet I look to fruit first but if I know that isn't going to curb the craving then I go for those 90 calorie special k packs. Best of luck to you.... |

I have had the same confusion as gem86 about deficits. So... to make sure I get this right, I am consuming 1700 calories daily. As long as my excercise is buring a minimum of 2200 calories, then that means there is a deficit and I should be losing weight (about 1-2 pounds a week). Is this right? |
