I've tried dieting many times in my life, constantly wanting to lose ten pounds or so, and have had very little luck. My three problems are that I love food, I hate to exercise, and I'm in decent shape already so it's so easy to be lazy when I look pretty good already. But slowly over the years I've put on a few pounds a year, and since I'm young (26) and still in good health, I figure it will be better all-around if I get myself into ideal shape and maintain it now, rather than waiting until I'm fat and have to lose a bunch of weight. So if you're like me and you're lazy, not always motivated, and love food, you might find that some of these tips help: --Buy healthy foods you like, and plan to eat during the day. Replace white bread with whole wheat bread, replace chips with pretzels or veggies, replace soda with water or hot tea. I absolutely love coffee and can't give up my morning coffee routine, but I replaced coffee/half-and-half with extra strong coffee plus some 2% milk. Fewer calories, more calcium, just as delicious. And keep plenty of fruits and vegetables around-- they have lots of fiber and will keep you satisfied with nutritious goodness. --Find physical activity that you enjoy and plan to do them regularly. I've never been good at going to the gym, but I picked a gym that I pass on my way home from work. I bring gym clothes every day, no matter what, and I plan to go every day. About 2 days a week there's something that keeps me from going, like working late or plans with my husband, but I always assume I'm going. --Even if you don't feel like working out, agree to make a lazy effort. On lazy days I tell myself I'll just walk half an hour on the treadmill and listen to some music, but once I'm there I always do more than I expected. --Imagine yourself as a thin person. I read about a study showed that however people thought they looked as a teenager is how they thought they looked for the rest of their lives. So if, as a teenager, you thought you were overweight, you will be inclined to think of yourself as overweight for your whole life no matter how much you weigh. Break that habit. Find the things you like about yourself and concentrate on them. When I run I imagine myself with the 6-pack I used to have, and think about how it's still under there struggling to break free. Oh, and I try not to think of myself exercising-- I try to think of it as a fun activity. --Make realistic goals that you think you can keep long-term. I love dessert and couldn't bear to cut it out of my diet. But instead of ice cream, I find that a dish of sugar-free vanilla pudding with some fresh fruit is just as satisfying. I am eating foods I enjoy, trying to make going to the gym a part of my regular routine, and no longer buying "fat clothes". I've only lost 2 pounds so far, but it's been less than 2 weeks and I think I'm off to a good start. Good luck to you-- you can do it! Your body will thank you!!! |

I know this is really scary right now, but it isn't as big of a deal as it feels like right now. "Precancerous cells" don't mean that you will get cancer-- it means that these cells, if left untreated, could eventually become cancer. Most of my female friends over the age of 24 have had this happen at some point in time. It probably means that you have HPV - human papiloma virus- the virus that the Guardasil vaccine is designed to prevent. If you do a little research on HPV you'll find that statistics show that about 70% of women get this virus at some point in their life. It is unknown how many men get it because men are very rarely tested. Furthermore, there are simple treatments (that sound scary at the time like acid or cutting off the affected parts) that will remove the precancerous cells. Most people's pap smears return to normal within 2 years and there's no sign that there was ever anything wrong. Let this be a reminder to all-- get your Guardasil vaccines!! Even if you've already had HPV at some point in your life, there are hundreds of strains and you probably haven't had ALL of them. You may have heard that the shots hurt, and they do, but it's WAY better than cancer. |
