Young Calorie Counters At what time did you start to notice your weight? Oct 02 2008

The vicious cries of "Fatso" in elementary school probably had something to do with it. :D

Despite that, I never really noticed my weight- I'm told I fluctuated pretty, er, heavily through the intervening years.  But in 8th grade, I hit a breaking point, and chose to take weight training instead of P.E.  I STILL didn't really notice whether I lost weight or not.  Only years later did it really register.  Since then, though, I've been fairly health-conscious even if I don't always listen to that consciousness. :D

Oh, and added to that, I think the Bowflex commercials I saw during 5am Pokemon watching (before it really got popular in America) had something to do with my eventual decision to take Weight training.

I wish to God that I had someone to sort of guide me through all that.  I'm deeply screwed up because of all those issues, but not as screwed up as I could have been- Providence did grant that I never really, seriously saw myself as 'Fat'- I looked in the mirror and just saw me, somehow, magically, managed to avoid the plagues of self-hate that so many live with.  Now that I'm in a position to have kids myself, I'm totally dedicated to giving them options and a place to go if they end up the same sort of problems- that, and with making physical activity and healthy eating just a part of life from the start (not forcing it on anyone- I imagine that might end up even worse than my own plight!)

Young Calorie Counters anyone else get excited when you get sore after a workout?? Oct 02 2008

No, I totally know what you mean!

I keep on telling my wife, it's just- I can't fully explain it- there is this tremendous feeling of accomplishment when I'm sore for a day or two after a good workout.  I feel each of my movements, and it's gratifying to know that those muscles are resting, repairing, getting stronger, and maybe even growing a little.

Get the same feeling after aceing a test.

Pain is okay, and pretty much unavoidable once you decide to pass up a certain level of activity- just remember, joint pain is really bad, you want the slow soreness in your muscles, not in your joints.  I liken it to fire- if you're on fire, that's bad, but if you've got some gently glowing embers going (and not in the joints!) then you're in a good place.

I suppose I should add that this applies to weight training- and Stretching afterwards is the thing that makes the pain happy instead of horrible. :)

I hate to say that I know exactly what you mean.  I HATE the void.  It feels like I imagine worms or something must feel- like I eat it and a black hole or some creature inside me sucks it in, leaving me unsatisfied.

The whole walk thing you did sounds great- keeping busy is the only way I know of to get over it.  I chew gum and read, exercise, etc.  I have to somehow keep in mind that I do NOT need it.  It's an illusion- or rather, I expect, my body just trying to prepare for the long, cold Winter- making it like the vestigial shark fin I have on my back- just useless and gets in the way.

Lots of great suggestions so far, I know for me, when I get that way, there isn't a food (at least not one I've tried) that will satisfy the craving.  I just have to tough it out until it subsides on it's own.   Feeding it often makes it last longer, for me.

Shame everyone's so different and vibrant, eh?  We could all do the same thing, otherwise!  Hope you're able to overcome or outsmart this one, whisperer!

EDIT: I'd like to add the chewing gum is my secret weapon against stuff like this.  My body sort of thinks I'm putting something into it (even though it doesn't need it!) but there isn't more than 5 cal a stick going in.  It can get disgusting- I chew a lot, and for a long time, but it works in a pinch, for me!

I'm totally with you.

Sometimes it just isn't right to resist, you've got to let things go.

The great trick is not to let yourself be consumed by guilt.  That's what happens- just like you said, it isn't really all that horrible for your goals (especially where you're a guy), but you just have to hop back on.  The temptation is to keep doing it over a couple of days (with, for example, the leftover cake), or you'll just have trouble getting back to eating normally, because your body experienced that huge, nice sugar rush, and it wants it again.

When you splurge, splurge happily, but then don't feel guilty or bad- you're not!  You had a lot of fun!  It was great!  Just pick up where you left off. :D

Fitness 3/4 mile in 6 minutes? May 01 2008
17:42 (UTC)

Like the others say, what's important is you.  I'm rather large, and I regard a ten-minute mile as an awesome benchmark for physical fitness.  A marathon runner, who runs over 20 at a faster clip, would scoff at me. :D

That said, if you're looking for opinions and support, I think that's a great start!  I love treadmills, I have trouble keeping my speed up otherwise.  You're doing great, keep it up, and you'll be flying across (insert whatever you imagine yourself to be running across) in no time!
