When I was in Hong Kong I really enjoyed the local breakfast of congee, noodles, and dumplings. Dim sum was a great lunch as well. I had a harder time finding food to eat in the evenings though. I can't remember why. Anyhoo, my suggestion is to bring a box of powerbars. Just in case.

I found this recipe in a cookbook and converted it from peach to strawberry. It was awesome!

I just looked at the recipe and all the ingredients didn't come up ( i probably used the number) so here they are.

3 tbsp splenda granuals

8 oz frozen fat free whipped topping

There are doritos too!! Yahoo!Wink

I love the chips. I have had the pringles and ruffles light. Both were great and I have not had any negative reactions.

I drink a about 6 oz in morning with my synthroid meds because I can't eat for an hour after. I don't know if it really helps or not, but at least I start with a little protein and not a lot of calories.

Health & Support Sudden Weight Gain and a Disturbing Doctor Visit... Aug 28 2008

Original Post by honesty46804:

I have gained 30 lbs since having surgery to remove one of my ovaries a year ago.

After quitting all soda, drinking nothing but water, eating salads, leaving food on my plate, working out, etc. After 3 months of this I have gained 10 more lbs. It finally dawned on me that it could possibly be my hormones from the removal of my ovary. Of course it could also be the hypothyroidism that runs in my family.

So I made an appointment with a new doctor to see what was up. He pretty much told me I was lazy and unless I changed my entire lifestyle I would continue gaining weight and to get used it. He didn't even want to do any bloodwork!

Honestly,

I too gained significant weight after a surgery and when I asked my doc for diet pills she immediately sent me for blood work and found that I am a hypothyroid. I don't know about hormone issues related to ovaries, but I can comment on the hypo part.

Mary Shoman's book on Hypothyroidism has a check list of symptoms that could be helpful. There are many symptoms that you might have that you never equated to weight gain or possible hypothyroidism. It also addresses dealing with docs that are less than helpful.

You definitely need a new doc.  Are you on an HMO? Some HMO docs are notorious for not doing tests or giving referrals because it messes with their bottom line. If you are on an HMO, keep looking for a doc that will be more helpful. Ask any friends about their HMO docs.

If your not on an HMO, keep looking for another GP or go to an endocrinologist.

I saw that you just started on Calorie Count, start logging all your food intake, activity, and weight and print those our for a any new doc. Two weeks of hard data should help with your case.

If you still can't get someone to order a test, you may want to consider getting your TSH tested yourself. Most people have a TSH of 1. Normal range is .3-3.0, The higher the number the WORSE you thyroid is functioning. Some docs and testing facilities believe the old range that went up to 5.0, but if you're having symptoms and are between 3.0 and 5.0 you should still be treated.

Good luck!

Welcome to the club. I'm surprised that your doctor started you on 100mg, what was your TSH level?

I was diagnosed last year with a TSH of 4.9 and a lot of symptoms. At 25mg Synthroid I dropped to 3.7 and my weight leveled off after gaining for a year and a half. At 50mg I dropped to a TSH of 2.7, but my symptoms persisted (joint pain, sore muscles, tired all the time, etc. I was tested again 5 months later and now I am up to 7.6. Has anyone else seen this type of THS gain after you had been getting better?

I thought I was getting better and then my TSH levels triple! I was just telling a friend that I had finally been feeling less sore all the time and then the soreness started again. Then I got my results and it made sense.

Cheers and well wishes to all who suffer the symptoms of being a hypo,

Scar

I wish California Pizza Kitchen would release nutritional info, though I'm quite sure it would prevent me from ever eating there again! ::sigh::

There is at least one in Manhattan, it should have the info on the menu.

If you could get that information for CC it would be FANTASTIC!

I'm supposed to go to California Pizza Kitchen today and I can't find much nutritional information so I will probably ditch CPK for something else. It makes me sad because I LOVE CPK!

Anyhoo... I hope this law catches on, but I do think people should have the option to ask for the nutritional info. I guess that would defeat the purpose of the law though considering the info wouldn't reach the target population.

I have to think of the normally weighted person who hasn't ever had to think about what they eat (hate um j/k). How will this affect their choices? Will they now focus and obsess about food? Will it change what they eat or their already (assumingly) fabulous metabolism?

IF ONLY... all restaurants were like Jimmy John's. At their website you can pick a sandwich and the nutritional info comes up. They you can subtract items, like mayo, and it recalculates the nutritional info. Awesome!!

I'm just getting over a bout of constipation. I still don't know where it came from, I might have been from too much fiber or vitamins. At first I went walking, used stool softeners and drank coffee in the mornings and it would give me some movement, but that eventually stopped working. Then I bought some "Smooth Move" tea and it got things flowing. I'm hoping it's over, but well see over the next few days. Good luck!

Edit: I just read the previous reply and I added fat and water as well. I couldn't tell if they made the difference though. I had already been drinking a lot of water, but adding some fat was fun!!

Health & Support Metabolism Testing? Jul 15 2008
15:22 (UTC)
7

Hey, It sounds like people have answered your question, but I thought I would chime in.  My question is why do you want your metabolism checked? Do you have symptoms of hypo or hyper thyroidism? These would be consistent weight gain/loss, body aches, joint pain, headaches, tired all the time, etc.

I had asked my doctor for diet pills because no matter what I did I just kept gaining weight. She sent me for a blood test to check my metabolism and we found that I have hypothyroidism. I don't know why your doctor would not be able to do this test because people of all ages have thyroid problems. Unless of course this is not the test your were looking for and thus my reply is moot.

Good luck!

It's weigh in day!! I am happy to say I am down 5 lbs this week. This is really a combination of two weeks because last week I was constipated and was actually up .8. So today I am happy! I have averaged 1400 calories per day for the last two weeks, but only exercised four times. I need to get out and move some more. I have 21 pounds left to my goal.

Good luck everyone. Remember, this is a marathon not a sprint!!!

Along the same lines, yesterday on Good Morning America, they had a short piece on the key to losing weight. And the answer is... keeping a food diary and being accountable for what you're eating. I can't remember if they mentioned how many calories one should eat, but I don't think so. I guess we at CC are on the right track according to GMA!

I'm up .8 this week. I averaged 1530 calories per day, 350 under my BMR, so I'm not going to worry about it... yet! I have 26 left to get to my first goal of 160. Then I'll maintain for a few months before moving on.

Along the vein of TMI, I've been totally constipated this week. I finally had a good BM yesterday and am hopeful the scale will go down with another couple of them. Sealed

Weight Loss what do you do when you get a craving? Jul 07 2008
22:41 (UTC)

I usually let my cravings fester around for awhile and then I treat myself. When I do treat myself I work it into my calories for the day and enjoy every single bite.

I find cravings much easier to control- binges on the other hand I need help with. I was introduced to deep fried jalapeño slices this weekend. Dynamite! I just couldn't NOT eat them, over and over.

For me, the best movies are the ones I watch over and over. They delightfully entertain me. In no particular order:

Only You: Beautiful Italian vistas.

About a Boy, Cinema Paradiso, and Il Postino : Great stories about relationships.

Love Actually: Just so so good... several stories about the different kinds of love

10 Things I Hate About You: A Shakespearean classic

Amelie: Beautifully created and fun story.

Princess Bride: A classic!

Ever After: "just breathe"

Sound of Music, Blast from the Past, Oh, there are just so many!

Health & Support eggs and high cholesterol Jun 28 2008

Hey there,  I also have high cholesterol and love eggs especially the yolkCry. My doctor told me that the biggest factors in having high cholesterol are genetics and weight. While I should watch the amount of cholesterol in my diet, it would be better if I lost 10% of my body weight.

So, in my case I have begun eating egg beaters. It's low cal and high protein and can make a nice omelet. However, every once and awhile I have a couple of eggs. It is rare because that little yolk is really high in calories and cholesterol which means I have to cut out something later.

The RDA for cholesterol is 300 mg per day and one egg has 200-250. I don't think it will hurt you to have a couple each week, but I'm not a doctor and that's who you should really ask.Sealed

Hey Lady,  Are you tracking your calories? Pasta has so many calories and if your eating it twice a day I think that's your problem. I love pasta myself and have had to cut it down. Now I eat lots of salad with oil and vinegar dressing (very little oil) to fill me up and then some lean protein to go with it. Ironically, eating less calories costs you more money. It's just wrong! Good luck with your new situation and job.

sha08: My Saturday's are kinda similar in the fact that I put off eating. I've started carrying granola bars in my purse for when I need a bite. If I'm running errands and get a twinge, or feel like I've gone too long without food then I have a bite. I don't even like them, but eating a third of a bar does me good.Smile

Yum that sounds good, in fact I just might make that today. Do you know the calories?

I always forget about beans. I really need to add them to my diet. My problem is planning and preparing. A good recipe like that will work, but if I don't have anything prepared I just find something else. I experimented with turkey chili (with beans) and that was really good, but high in calories.
