Weight Loss Carb "blockers"? Anyone with experience? Nov 24 2009
03:22 (UTC)

I lost my first 60 lbs with the help of carb blockers and fat blasters (or something of such).  The truth is I think they work especially the carb ones.  All they really do (according to my nutritionist) is push things threw faster.  But the trick is to take them 20-30 min before you eat the carb heavy meal.  I haven't taken them daily since September, and though my weight loss has slowed, I have lost another 10lbs.  So if you stick to the plan, judging from personal experience, I would say you don't gain the weight back.

Sticking to the plan is key.

Good Luck

Thanks everyone.  I guess the reason my DCO stuff survived being washed is because I always wash work cloths cold, gentle and hand or flat dry.

Weight Gain how does what you eat the day of the weigh in affect...? Nov 23 2009

The difference should be negligible and if it isn't you know why.  Its hard to tell exactly how much ur lunch will add (or won't) to the scale because hours are passing in between when u eat and when u get weighed.  Just try from now on to have the same breakfast and lunch on weigh in days.

Well I just moved everything from the spare room closet to my closet (all my closest are organized by size). Anyway and I am trying stuff on and it looks tight! IT's really not I am just used to wearing my old 5x's when I am now down to a 2 or 3 x depending on the company.  *sigh* Its amazing how the mind messes with you.

Off to find something for work tomorrow that I am comfortable in.

It really could be a million things speculating on a here I am sure won't help.  I used to have cat Tiffany and he (yes he) started doing similar turned out his jaw was broken and out of alignment a little so he couldn't close his mouth properly.  (he had kitty epilepsy so we figured he feel off something when he had a seizure)

The rabies thing to me sounds weird.  Giving the vaccine after exposure won't help anything not to mention if it is rabies and ur cat bites someone that could be a major lawsuit. No matter what after this I would look for new vet.

Did he check for

Feline aids/leukemia?

Lose teeth?

Jaw alignment

Stroke-maybe but like people there should be other symptoms

is she an indoor/outdoor kitty? there are a million nasties out there if she wasn't vaccinated as a young kitten

Good luck, I have kitties myself and I know how hard this can be.

Weight Loss how much is too much for breakfast/lunch or too little for dinner? Nov 21 2009
22:26 (UTC)

What GiJane and Carrotqueenie said.  As long as u hit your cal target and feel satisfied break it up however works for you.

My fav dinner is a bowl of cereal (usually oatmeal) with milk.  about 200 cals and keeps me going til morning.  At which point I usually have something that someone else would consider lunch....it works for me so I do it and that's the bottom line.

Weight Loss my boss makes me fat... Nov 21 2009

Well I must say ur post made me smile a little.  Not because ts funny but a been there done that reason.  Anywho the most obvious is change jobs...easier said then done.  Have you tried talking to her? She may not realize how she makes you feel, if your a valued employee (which it sounds like you are) you just might be surprised how easy the conversation goes.

Having said the obvious try a few food substitutes.  I have seriously curb my chocolate craving by adding baking coca to everything, almost everyday. 1 table spoon in yogurt, oatmeal, coffee, milk etc..... at 15 cals per servings its better then godiva...yummy..chocolate...........

Wait focus :-)

For carbs try pretzels and buy a bagel instead of the baguette.  Sometimes spending more for a single serving of what you are craving is better then having the whole thing.

I also practically live on herbal teas of many varieties.  Try a calming cup of tea before you get what Ur craving.  etc....

Now on a not so nice note.  When I was having issues at my old job I posted a pic of my boss on a dart board. Innocent lets just say I am really good at darts now and it helped me relieve the stress.

Good luck

I think they had everyone's best interest in mind but just executed it poorly.  If it going to be a required class it should be mandatory the first year (we've all heard or experienced the freshman 15).  I also think it should be mandatory for all.

That's my two cents.

Health & Support Do I need professional help? or can I do it myself? Nov 21 2009

Thanks for responding everyone.  You gave me some good idea to try until I have the money to hire a professional. (maybe I can find one who won't bill until I sell the house...dreams...) Anyway I guess I just needed to hear what I already knew from someone else.

And I always thought hoarding was a need to collect stuff.  I haven't brought anything new in the house (except necessities smaller clothes, food, makeup, replace the lamp that broke and threw out the old lamp) in over a year.  I guess you can hoard feelings which doesn't let me let go of the clutter.  I'll have to talk to my shrink about that.  I never brought it up in this context because I didn't think I was a hoarder.....still not sure if I am or am not.

Well thank you again and if anyone else has any other suggestions or personal stories I would love to hear them.

Take ur cat to another vet asap.

Don't know whats wrong with her but when I was younger my cat, whiskey, started throwing up "brown jello" for lack of a better description.  two vets said it was nothing.  The third actually ran some tests and discovered he had undersized kidneys but at that point he was so sick we thought he was going to die.  He spent a week with that vet pulled threw and lived til 17 on a special diet.

The Lounge Concerned about pregnant outdoor cat--UPDATE! Nov 21 2009

Well first I must admit I did not read the entire thread so please forgive me if this is a repeat.

first if you can't touch her or get near her when you feed her odds are your going to have a really hard time bringing her in and keeping her in  unless you keep her in a cage. (dog crate actually, something really big) Or make sure you know where her kittens are after they are born.  you can use them to trap her if u have too.

second if she is friendly OK. if she is completely feral consider fixing her and releasing her after the kittens are born and weaned.  Though she is not far enough along to rule out aborting its still rough on the momma cat because of hormones in stuff.

third if you do get her in make sure you handle those kittens every single day from about week two on.  I can just be 15 seconds each but the more you handle them the friendlier they will be.

fourth if you do catch start advertising in pet smart and places now.  People like knowing exactly when they are born and maybe even coming over to see them.  don't let them "pick one" bc if one dies they might not want another.

Having said all that, when I lived in Georgia I caught a soon to be momma cat and brought her in.  (for the same reasons as u) I had to keep her in a dog crate so she wouldn't climb the walls and try to run threw the windows.  She had...20 kittens.  Biggest dam littler I'd ever seen.  She ended up not having enough milk and I had to supplement the kitten by bottle.....lots of sleepless night.  Then the shelter that lent me the crate had another momma cat whose litter was small (3) and took some of the kittens early.  But I advertised and actually had them all with perspective homes before they we 8 weeks old.  As well as the other 3 kittens from the 2nd momma.  Well momma kitty stayed with me.  She's still a little nervous from time to time and doesn't like strangers.  She only comes to be pet when I am in bed or in the bathroom and is a very lovely cat.  It only took 2.5 years for her to come out from under the furniture after I got get fixed and let her out of the crate.  I actually was going to release her but she wouldn't walk out the door.  Guess she figured out I was a sucker that supply easy food :-)

Last year my heater was sent at 50-55 when home and 45 when I wasn't all winter and I used a little space heater to bump the room I was in to about 65.

This year I am frickin freezing all the time.  But I am still cheap so my heat won't go higher then 60 when I am home and is set at 45 when I am not home and at night.  Again I am using lots of layers and a space heater to bump the temp of the bedroom at night. its probably around 70-75 in my room at night plus I have a several layers and blankets and I'm still cold.

Weight Loss How much water do you drink? Nov 18 2009

When I was on my first diet at about 8 my doctor told me 6-8 glasses a day.  So that has always stuck in my mind.  Personally though if I don't drink at least 80oz a day (i have a 20 oz water bottle I refill) I start feeling tired and hungry.

Motivation How do you convince yourself that it's worth it? Nov 18 2009
04:20 (UTC)

My suggestion is coming from personal experience.  Deal with your depression first, it makes other things in ur life so much easier to deal with. I say this because what you wrote could almost be me.

You see I have always been overweight, but healthy.  I used my fat a wall to keep people away so I wouldn't be hurt.  Then my mom (she was also my best friend) was diagnosed and dies of cancer in less then 8 months.  I sunk into a depression like one I have never experienced before. (i have suffered with mild depression since I was about 12) Well I ate and ate and ate eventually hitting 320 on my 5'8 frame.  I was in a size 30/32 top and didn't give a ****.  I looked in the mirror and saw what I looked like and actually thought people didn't notice. (talk about denial) Then because of my weight two bulging discs in my back herniated.  That still didn't stop me, my life consisted of work and home.  Home consisted of eating something (say 1lb pasta) waiting 10 min and then getting the next thing to shove in my face and then sleep.

I eventually got suicidal and decided to see a shrink.  I was skeptical because I was never able to find someone I felt comfortable talking too.  So I went to my general doctor for an anti depressant and then had to go to a shrink.  I randomly choose the one I did because he is on my insurance and he was exactly in between work and home.

And I went once with no intention of ever going back again but I did and we talked about a lot of things.  but never my weight (unlike my past shrinks that is was one of the first things they wanted to work on) Then one day I brought it up.  And well not to keep going on he helped me, eventually I was weaned off the drugs and I was losing weight.  And I still am.  And to the deepest part of my soul I know if i wasn't dealing with my depression and self worth issues I probably would have gained 70lbs instead of losing them.

I know you may not be as depressed as I was but its the "whats the point" thought that is exactly what I used to say to myself.   Feel free to pm me if you    want to talk.

Motivation How do I get motivate to do what I NEED/Want to do???? Nov 16 2009
01:11 (UTC)
4

The motivation that got me started was wanting to lose weight for my vacation.  What has kept me on this path is no longer psychologically feeling like I "need" or "should" lose weight, and just "wanting" and "enjoying" losing weight.  For me it was just replacing those words in my vocabulary.

But its different for everyone.  You need to find your "carrot" to dangle in front of urself to keep you going.  And don't let stumbles completely knock you off track. (this is something I am still working on)

Good luck!

Hi-

I really don't have anything new to add except those who made the comments are a piece of ****. And u look great.

I will suggest tomorrow U mention it to HR and see what they want you to say or not say to them.  Their comments are creating a hostile work environment and that's a big NO NO.  They can lose their jobs for it and in this economy I sure u will get ten applicants for each position.

Good luck and when no one is looking spit in their drinks :-P

Weight Loss I am so tired of thinking about food!!! Nov 03 2009
04:58 (UTC)
Original Post by appletwo:

Obsessive thinking about food is a sign that you may not be eating enough - it's one of the bodies natural defenses against starvation.  They actually did a study (during WWII) where they starved healthy young men, to study the effects of refeeding, and the men developed very strong obsessions with food during the starvation part of the study.

How many calories per day are you eating? Are you making sure to get plenty of fat and protein? How much weight do you lose, on average? Maybe it would be better to aim for a smaller daily deficiet, and lose slowly for a month or two, while your body adjusts to your current weight, then kick back into a higher weight loss mode.

I don't think I'm starving myself.  I eat around 1400 cals on days when I don't work out and around 1800 on the days I do. (plus I have one free day a week or one free weekend a month)  I am actually very careful to make sure I am eating balanced and since my hair started falling out even more so.  (I went to the dr and he said all my blood work was fine and sometimes hair loss is a side effect of weight loss) In the beginning I lost really fast and then Sept I lost 8lbs and oct I lost 6.6, so I am averaging the 1-2lbs a week.

Fitness Funny Things I've Seen At the Gym Nov 02 2009

These stories are the reason I go to a 24 hour gym at the off times.

But one time this guy was running full speed and I watched him start staring at this girl and the next thing I knew he flew off the end of the treadmill and crashed into the one directly behind him.  It was bad, sort of.  After he got up (with myself and another person helping him) he went to the locker room with a bruised ego.  The next day he was back but I never have seen him get distracted again.

Weight Loss Tuna for weight loss? Nov 02 2009
00:12 (UTC)
6

Tuna twice a day every day is a lot and boring, which for me leads to diet disaster.

Two reasons tuna may be your 'magic food'.  One its very high in protein and eating more protein keeps you full longer.  You might want to try some other high protein / low cal options to keep your diet varied.

http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/ highproteinfood.htm

The other reason is I believe most of us have foods that trigger us to be healthy just like comfort foods are comforting.  For me its my salad at lunch 150g spinach, 50g feta cheese, 113g tabouli.  Its been my 'magic meal' every time I have had weight loss success and now its almost like a superstition, if I don't eat the salad my day will not be a successful day. If tuna is just your 'magic food' you might want to cut how much you eat at each meal in half or even quarter, that way you still get the psychological benefits of the taste and smell and you get to vary your foods.
