Be careful switching from beer to liquor. Mixed drinks have a higher percentage of alcohol than beer. I know liquor is "mean juice" for me if I drink it at the same pace as I would beer. Just a friendly public service announcement! |

I have at least 50 more to lose and I LOVE the group fitness classes at my gym! I do Body Pump, step, Zumba (tried spin but it wasn't for me). People are more accepting than you think. Plus, after you have gone a few times, they hold you accountable to show up. |

Does your gym offer classes? I started doing a barbell class called Body Pump. I know it's not heavy lifting or anything, but it hits all the muscles and it was a good place to start for me. I'm sure I'll graduate beyond it in time. I also love all the cardio classes my gym offers. Good luck! |

Thanks again for all the encouragement and advice. At this point I am loving the morning classes and am sorry when I have to miss one. You get used to seeing the same faces every morning and it becomes both a physical and a social outlet. My husband and a good friend also join me most days. Like I said in my original post, my diet needs some tweaking (which means I really need to watch it better), so I do tend to rely on the calorie burn from exercise more than decreasing my calorie intake. The weight loss has been slow, but I'm ok with that. I had been taking Mondays off for the longest time until someone recommended the Turbo Kick class. It's pretty fun and doesn't feel like work, so I guess I'll just see how it goes for now. Thanks again! |

Was it Hip Hop Hustle? If so, I have been doing it for a couple months now and it's a TOTAL BLAST! According to my HRM, I burn about 650-700 calories in an hour class! It's great when you find something that's actually fun. It makes it easy to stick to. I sooo look forward to Wednesdays and Saturdays! I wish my gym would offer it more often! Keep it up and ENJOY! |

Stand with your toes on a step. Raise up to your tiptoes and then lower your heel lower than your toes about 10 or 15 times. I do this multiple times a day, and it helps to stretch out that ligament/tendon/whatever in the bottom of the foot. Works for me anyway! Also, I have good arch supports in all my shoes. |

I also recently started taking Zumba classes at my gym. They are a total blast! I am not a dancer either, and there's even one insutructor that turns the lights way down so people aren't so self-consious! Highly recommend! |

OK, I looked at the class schedule again. The only other possible Body Pump class I could make is on Sunday mornings. What are your thoughts on 2 days in a row? |

Thanks for all the replies. They do offer Body Pump more throughout the week, just not at a convenient time for me. I will try to incorporate some other weight training the rest the week. I do think I will continue to do the cardio classes, though. I absolutely love them! |

Sounds like you did well. I went to a class at my gym tonight, and the instructor said it's not unusual for people to eat 6,000 calories at a Super Bowl party! We can't give up everything, can we? |

I'll admit, I'm a newbie at the gym! But they had an awesome January special, $20 per month, unlimited access 24/7, unlimited classes, membership fee guaranteed never to increase! Who can resist?! Hopefully I won't be one of those who abandon my fitness goals, but I do see where you long-timers are coming from. Sorry! |

I have kept my current friends, but find I'm making new ones because of my new "lifestyle" I meet people in aerobics classes, on bike trails, in the produce aisle, etc., that I never had anything in common with before. It has widened my circle. |

I enjoy Leslie Sansone. She has several for beginners. Just marching in place, knee lifts, kicks, etc. Not complicated, but it will give you a workout! Plus she is very kind and encouraging. |

I also don't mind eating the same breakfast and lunch day after day at work, as long as dinner varies. Week Days: For breakfast I bring a piece of fruit and a Fiber One yogurt. Morning snack is a Fiber One bar (Oats and Peanut Butter -- YUM). Lunch is either a salad with baked chicken on top (I make 3 every Sunday) with a serving of Wheat Thins Fiber Select crackers and skim milk OR Progresso Lite soup with the Wheat Thins Fiber Select crackers and a wedge of Laughing Cow Light cheese and skim milk. Afternoon snack is a handful of almonds. Water all day long. Weekends: I really watch it during the day, but then by evening, all bets are off! |

| Fitness | Does treadmill walking 30 min/day really make a difference? | Jan 13 2009 17:48 (UTC) |
|
I have been at it for 8 months -- started outside at 30 minutes a day (about 2 miles). Then, as it is getting colder, the treadmill for 30 minutes: 2 min at 3mph, 0 incline, then 2 min at 5% incline, 2 min at 8%, 2 min at 12%, 2 min at 15%, 2 min at 12%, 2 min at 8%, 2 min at 12%, 2 min at 15%, 2 min at 12%, 2 min at 8%, 2 min at 12%, 2 min at 15%, 2 min at 12% and finally, 2 min 0 incline (cooldown). I have lost approx 25 lbs without changing eating habits too drastically. I know it's slow weight loss -- but also, blood pressure is down and feel awesome! p.s. also Leslie Sansone or other dvds once in awile |

I have several of Leslie's dvd's and really like to do them when it's too cold or windy to walk outside! She can get a little too chipper for my taste sometimes, but she delivers a good sweaty workout. I especially like the ones where she uses the stretchy bands! I switch up my workouts among the treadmill, Leslie Sansone, Gilad Total Body Sculpt and walking outside. I am not super diligent about my calories, although I try eat healthy and pretty low-cal. With this, I have lost 27 pounds in 33 weeks -- I know slow, but I figure this is something I can stick to and make a "lifestyle." |

I am certainly no expert, but I think as long as you're getting your heart rate up and working hard, and you are doing something you enjoy enough to do it often and stick with it, then keep doing it -- whatever it is! |
