Original Post by rp1993: Jesus... I'm happy at 5'11 and 130, which is as skinny as BMI charts deem healthy. 5'9 and 110 is dangerous. |

All other things be equal, I, a 16-year-old real... boy, just like a healthy look. I don't tend to be attracted to overweight girls, but I know some curvier types who are attractive, despite my current skinny object of affection. |

| Young Calorie Counters | Did you eat all your veggies today? | Jul 22 2009 17:06 (UTC) |

I always get a banana with breakfast, some kind of veggie at lunch, and at least a serving of veggies at dinner, but not much other fruit. I eat salads whenever I go out to eat, but the fiber in apples is too much for me, since I already come close to ODing on fiber with my love of cereal... at least I get a daily vitamin pill. |

| Young Calorie Counters | How do I stop binging at night? | May 19 2009 01:45 (UTC) |

Gum and brushing your teeth with very strong toothpaste make food less attractive. Keep raw veggies around for munching purposes. Don't get rid of everything at night; just fatty stuff like ice cream and peanut butter. Invest in a small safe, perhaps, and lock up problem foods at night, or spend nights on the couch in a very very comfortable position with a good movie so you won't want to get up and eat. |

I don't really eat eggs, but my breakfasts serve me well enough: 17 grams of protein and 12 of fiber, a serving of grains, fruit and dairy. My family's oatmeal comes in a package, we don't have a working blender... it's tricky sometimes. I need to get fruit in the morning to get my 5-a-day and a bunch of fiber so I don't starve. I'm a newspaper reader, as well, and cereal is something I can graze on while I peruse the news. Other than that, though, I try to lead a healthy life... but the thought that I'm consuming 10-12% more calories than I think is a bit frightening considering my fitness goals. |

Original Post by hailtothethief: I wish my parents would let me get a food scale... I can't even measure exact servings of cereal with a cup if they're around. What do you mean by "regulate"? Calories are calories, right? GI Jane: I know prepackaged foods aren't great, but there aren't many non-packaged options for a good, healthy breakfast around. In fact, nonpackaged foods are insanely hard to measure: my typical school lunch is a fresh-made-while-I-watch turkey sandwich that could be anywhere from 350-550 calories, and I have very little chance of estimating an accurate figure. |

I'm sure you can get a salad without dressing and cheese. If they have some kind of poultry sandwich, go for that, maybe eat half and save the rest so you can have some fries or something. |

How old are you both? If it wouldn't be illegal, i'd say go for it. If he works at a weight loss clinic, I'm sure he's seen many cases worse than you, and compared to some girl off the street, he knows you care about your health and will probably look better and better as he gets to know you. |

Original Post by sandisoverrated: Skinny= healthy, fit, long-lived. Don't blame me, it's just what I've been taught by science. Cut out the 'society' thing. 'Society' likes 'normal', 'plus-sized' people now. It's the trend. Models get hated on, and 2/3 of the US is overweight. |

Link her to some reputable sites that explain how binging works. Try to tell her all of this, maybe quoting from this post. If that doesn't work, try to explain how buying healthier food will benefit everyone, even Baba, in the long run. If it gets so bad it's affecting your health, talk to your doctor or the school nurse. |

What your teacher did (reporting you like that) was inexcusable. Demand an apology and stand up for your rights. Have something read on the announcements, maybe? Telling people the whole calorie shpiel? And if it was really your friends who said that about you, find new ones (or just get a serious apology). |

1700 calories a day will not support someone swimming for two hours a day. Eat more. And marshmallows have no taste, but I can understand the cereal. Try getting it in those mini-packs. |

http://kidsnutrition.org/bodycomp/bmiz2.html According to that calculator, you're in the 12th percentile for BMI and may be underweight. You'd be fine at 125 pounds, just eat healthy foods and you'll be fine even if you occasionally break past your limit. Since you're active, get at least 1600 or 1700 calories every day, even if you haven't exercised that day. Remember that going into starvcation mode makes you gain weight as surely as going to IHOP or Denny's or something. |

Remember the basic portion rule: 1/2 of your plate filled with veggies/fruits, 1/4 with carbs, 1/4 with protein. Use the smallest plates they have if you want to eat less. Use portion estimation sites (http://www.ped.med.utah.edu/pku/pdf/portion.p df is a good one) and don't take anything too greasy. Watch out for soup and mexican-type food, as they tend to be high in sodium. Stick to poultry for meat if you can. Which website has the menu? If you post it, we can see the food choices and advise further. |

Get yourself some Pendulum (Showdown, Slam, Tarantula, Granite, Blood Sugar) and blast it as you tread. Other suggestions include the Spor remix of Stompbox (the Qemists) and One Night in Bangkok (Vinylshakerz remix). |

Today... got away from me. B: 2 cups of Honey Nut Cheerios, skim milk (400) S: .5 cup of Cheerios (regular), .25 cup of dried cranberries (130) L: .5% chocolate milk, turkey, cheese and lettuce on a kaiser roll, cheddar sunchips, half a Rice Krispy Treat (700) S: Carrot sticks, some PB (150) D: Red Robin: Apple Harvest Walnut Salad, half an Asian Chicken Salad (just lettuce, carrots and a bit of dressing), a couple fries and a bit of pita bread: 600-ish S: 2 Ferro Rocher hazelnut balls (150) For a total of: 2130? Never mind, then... strange, I feel really full but I hit about my goal. |

| Young Calorie Counters | What do the people at YOUR lunch table eat? | Jan 19 2009 20:04 (UTC) |
24 |
Original Post by beanaparker: Are you a college student or do you go to an off-campus high school? Either way, I'm jealous. Most kids at my table just get school lunches. The vegetarians mostly pack. One kid has parents crazy for Trader Joe's, so he's always bringing organic stuff. Sometimes, he'll have like three ounces of cheese, crackers, a sandwich, raisins, a huge bag of almonds... but he swims, so he's fine. One girl (short and curvy, not overweight) seems to only get fruit, milk and a salad while exercising hard 1-2 hours a day, but she's not anorexic so I guess she has a big breakfast/dinner. She was anemic for a while though. |

Read the other threads, read the stickies especially, eat healthily, but makes sure you eat enough. Don't use CC's tools: try http://www.kidsnutrition.org/bodycomp/energy/ energyneeds_calculator.htm There's another one I've used, but I can't seem to find it. Remember to only keep a calorie deficit (calories eaten-calories burned) of 500 at max. Losing one pound a week, you'll be thirty pounds lighter by next September. By the end of your first public school year, you can easily hit a healthy weight. BTW, I go to a public school, too. I've never been fat, but I know kids who are, and it's not like they have giant targets on their stomachs or anything. There are girls, probably around your height, who are easily twenty pounds heavier and who manage to be popular. Have no fear. |

Muscle is about 18% denser than fat. Counting the weight of your bones, skin, blood, organs, etc., I think you'd still be considered overweight. |

How much is "a lot"? Were you at a party or something? Even there, I doubt it's possible to consume more than a couple pounds of food a day. You could be retaining weight from water if you have too much sodium. Don't worry, it is indeed impossible to gain 12 pounds in two days unless you're some sort of competitive eater. |

Cereal, pretzels, m&ms, sweet, carby things in general. To whoever ate cereal for dessert- I feel your pain. A cup of Reese's puffs beats a cup of light ice cream, if you ask me. |

20 pounds in 2 months= 10 pounds per month= 2.5 pounds per week= 1250 negative calories a day. In a word, no. Shoot for ten, maybe twelve, accept yourself the way you are or try some of Florida's many non-bikini attractions. |
