| Weight Loss | Please help...Am I eating too much or too little? | Jun 24 2009 02:28 (UTC) |

Original Post by jbbrenner: The minimum is 8 cups of water per day -- a glass is usually more than a cup & any water you consume in food counts (such as fruits) If you feel thirsty, go for it, but you do not need to be drinking that much. |

| Weight Loss | Hungarian diet? | Jun 24 2009 02:19 (UTC) |

My grandmother (who was Hungarian) made a lot of dumplings, homemade pasta, briskets and paprikash. But we're also Hungarian Jews, which probably means a slightly different diet.
I would recommend googling "traditional Hungarian recipe," before you leave, then you can take the recipe and use CC's recipe function to analyze it and it'll give you an estimate for at least some of the foods you'll encounter. Have a great time in Hungary! |

| Weight Loss | YES, i need to diet, but starting is the hardest part. | Jun 24 2009 02:17 (UTC) |

I would recommend doing no changes for a week and instead keep track of your calories -- what you ate & when and also keep track of why you ate it. Were you actually hungry or bored or it tasted good and you wanted more? Then you'll be able to identify where your excess calories are coming from and it will feel less overwhelming because you can concentrate first on, say not eating while bored and then eating smaller portions, etc.
Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Really Dumb question about waist measurements | Jun 24 2009 02:09 (UTC) |

bend over to the side, or to touch your feet -- the place where you bend is your waist. The biggest part is your hips.
I wouldn't suck in -- that way you can use your measurement for clothes and they will fit comfortably even when you breathe! |

| Young Calorie Counters | Scared to Eat What I Need | Jun 22 2009 01:37 (UTC) |

I think that you've taken some positive steps by admitting that your body needs more than you've been giving it. You are absolutely right -- you want to be healthy.
So first of all, you need to eat at least 1500 calories per day to be healthy -- and you will lose weight doing it. You are only burning 300/day at the job, but you're burning an additional 1800-2500 just being alive and developing, so you're already at a pretty significant deficit. Second of all, eating less will not make you burn faster or healthier. I developed anorexia when I was 12 and didn't eat over a 1000 kcal/day until I was 24 -- by which time it was super easy for me to gain weight, because I had destroyed my metabolism and I hated the way I looked, because I had consumed all of my muscle by not eating enough. When I joined CC I began eating 1.5-2 times what I used to, lost weight and I feel a lot better about my body, because I have muscle now. Please, if you feel tempted to do something unhealthy, talk to your doctor. He or she will help you develop healthy nutritional goals. |

| Health & Support | Obsession with losing weight/ counting calories | Feb 06 2009 23:46 (UTC) |

Please, please, please go talk to a doctor. I've been where you are. Eating disorders are addictive -- there's the rush of weight loss, of eating less, but as you said -- you want to stop and you can't stop alone. You've developed a problem. A primary care physician or an eating disorder specialist can help you -- can talk to you about what problems you may be causing down the road, discuss healthy weight management and get you treatment and/or counseling to help you get over the unhealthy urges to restrict. Moreover, over-restricting may cause you to lose weight in the short term, but in the long-term, you're putting your body into starvation, so you'll gain weight back.

My experience as a recovering anorexic is this -- I gained 40# in the course of about 6 years -- from anorexic weight to the very top of my healthy BMI. Gaining weight made me miserable, and I would go back to fasting, and every time when I started trying to recover I would gain back until I weighed more than I did before getting sick. Since age 18, I've gained and lost a total of about 50-100# (I only weigh about 120#, so that's a HUGE amount.)
What happened to me was that every time I started restricting, I lost more and more lean body mass, and when I recovered, I gained back fat, but not muscle, so my BMR was terrible. (For several years, I was maintaining on only 1000 kcal a day, it was awful). I'm not saying this is what's happened to you -- I was doing low-grade starvation for 11 years, so my metabolism tanked; many anorexics have rip-roaring BMRs and need to eat a ton to gain back -- but this has been my experience. To get better, I have been doing A) exercising -- building back my lean body mass has been great for both my self-esteem and my metabolism B) eating frequently and C) Never cutting back on kcal taken in. It's been really stressful eating 1400 kcal a day with the expectation of losing weight, when I was gaining on 1000 kcal a day, but it's worked for me.
Your body needs calories (at least 1500 at your age), and you need calories to stay psychologically healthy. Your metabolism will recover eventually. It's super hard -- trust me, I know. Hang in there -- focus on being healthy today and not what your weight will be when you're 25. That sort of catastrophic thinking about being fat is still eating disorder talking. Eat breakfast every day, eat snacks, exercise (I feel thinner now than I did at 90#, because I have muscles back!) and you'll get better. |

| Health & Support | TO: any MEDICS/DOCTORS, about irregular heart beats... | Jan 31 2009 16:36 (UTC) |
|
If you have episodes of irregular heart beat YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR. I am a health care professional, but I can't do a physical exam, check an EKG or a holter monitor (a monitor you wear over your heart for 12-72 hours that checks your rhythm) or do anything else from my end of the Internet. ONLY your doctor can do that. Most people with your symptoms are normal -- the most common cause of feeling like your heart is racing or skipping beats is caffeine; however, per your profile, you are at the bottom of the healthy BMI range. I don't know you or your history. I am going to throw out a couple of hypotheticals, so that you understand that this is potentially serious. 1. People who have been binging or using laxatives are losing electrolytes (like sodium, potassium -- things bodies need). These abnormalities can cause an irregular heart beat that can be fatal. 2. People who fast develop "autonomic neuropathy," which is a fancy way of saying that your heart no longer responds well to change in environment. These people can get very severe blood pressure drops, or heart rate increases when they move from sitting to standing and it can lead to blacking out. If either of these apply to you, please, please, please be honest with your doc and ask them to make sure your heart is OK. |

| Weight Loss | How do I keep my butt and boobs while losing weight?! | Jan 26 2009 03:20 (UTC) |
7 |
Work out your pectoral muscles ("we must increase our bust," anyone?) Overall, though, it depends on your body makeup and your genetics. I know people are telling you that you'll inevitably lose your bust, but take it from the former anorexic -- not everyone loses their bust! When my weight was down in the 90s, I went up from a 34C to a 34D; the second time I had a major eating disorder relapse, I went to a 34DDD, and stayed there after recovering to a healthy weight. |

| Health & Support | >>> Anorexic-turned-binger/overeater. Consider RECOVERED from anorexia? | Jan 26 2009 03:06 (UTC) |

I have been an off-and-on anorexic and ED-NOS for over 11 years. What I have learned is that I need to treat the anorexia as I would any other addiction -- no one ever says that they are a "recovered alcoholic," similarly, I always say that I'm a "recoverING anorexic." I have gone through stretches over a year where I didn't do any disordered eating behaviors, but then I get stressed and fast. I will never trust myself to be recovered, but I'm still proud of myself for the work I have done recovering. Does that help? |

| Weight Loss | Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred | Jan 17 2009 02:30 (UTC) |

I just bought it, and, similar to everyone else...it's a great workout, regardless of your beginning fitness level. I'm small (120#, 5'0") and in relatively good shape (rock-climbing twice a week, pilates 3-4 times a week, yoga once a week, some other form of cardio once a week) and level one totally kicked my butt. Already by the second time through, I'm feeling a major difference in strength in some of the exercises. Regarding health, joints, etc: one of the reasons I work out is because I have bad arthritis in my hands, spine, hips and feet. On the one hand, I built myself up with lower intensity workouts first; on the other, she does good warm ups and really emphasizes healthy posture. My joints have been fine. If you have health concerns, I recommend watching the DVD once through and paying attention to all of her posture tips. But yeah, don't plan anything too intense the next day -- I have to climb 10 flights of steps to get to work and my thighs were SCREAMING on the morning after day one with Jillian. |

| Fitness | How Do You Fit It Into Your Schedule? | Jan 10 2009 00:06 (UTC) |
9 |
I had a ton of problems fitting exercise into my schedule, too. Two things really helped me: 1. (The big one): I started doing exercise that I *liked* doing. It was amazing how time appeared in my schedule to do something that I actually enjoyed. For me, a huge part of the time committment to exercising was procrastinating, etc. I also exercise last thing in the day, so that I don't need an additional shower, beyond the one I take in the morning. 2. Ten Minute Solutions is a brand of exercise video (I'm particularly fond of their pilates rapid results, but they have a huge variety). It is designed that you do 10 minutes of exercise 5 times a day: wake up ten minutes early, grab another 10 between class and work, another 10 when you get home before chores and then stay up an extra 20 minutes -- you'll barely notice. |

| Fitness | Expert needed for body fat % and large breasts? | Jan 10 2009 00:00 (UTC) |

It depends on how you measure body fat % -- if you estimate using waist circumference, hip circumference, thigh circumference and calf circumference it shouldn't make too much of a difference. If you do water submersion it will contribute significantly. Most of the electric measuring devices are about in the middle. (I have a 32DDD chest, so I feel your pain!) |

| Health & Support | wierd question please help | Dec 26 2008 06:21 (UTC) |

If there is blood in your stool, you need to see a doctor. Period. We cannot diagnose you without examining you, doing tests, etc. Blood in the stool may be completely benign (such as from hemorrhoids) or it may be a sign of something serious. Only a doctor can tell you which it is. (My best guess is that you have an anal fissure, which is extremely painful and liable to get worse without treatment, but not serious; however, as I said, without examining you & doing tests, I can only guess. Go see your doctor!) |

| Health & Support | So was I never a bulimic then?... | Dec 17 2008 13:22 (UTC) |
5 |
According to diagnostic criteria, bulimia is a disease of binging, the purging is incidental. So, technically, you were never a bulimic. People who go through normal eating/purging or fasting/purging cycles are considered "purging anorexics" if they meet the clinical criteria for anorexia, which you didn't (BMI <=17.5). So I would call what you had "Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified," which doesn't invalidate that it was truly an eating disorder -- just it didn't fit the typical patterns. You should make your doctor aware, as there are dental problems and stomach problems from purging and you want to make sure you're healthy :D (I'm a medical student, so take that for what it's worth.) |
