I, too, thought that I would plug my GWF in and find out I wasn't burning as much as I thought I was.  Wrong!  I was shocked those first couple of days.  On the first day I wore it during a boot camp workout, I ended up burning 4200 calories that day.  Since I've been wearing it for several weeks now, I think it's finally setting up a pattern so I know on days I work out intensely (boot camp) I am going to burn more calories (usually around 3400-3600) and on days I run, I burn between 3300-3500.  On non-workout days I am still burning around 3000 calories.  Also, I average around 11,000 steps per day.  With this pedometer, I really try and make an effort to get those steps in every day.

The graphs and charts are a really cool feature on the web site.  I am excited every day to see the ups and downs with activity and how many calories per minute I am burning.

I really hope the GWF is everything you're hoping for.

Hey bdasko, You got the GWF.  That's terrific!  I'm curious what your calorie burn is?  On average over the last two weeks, mine is 3290 per day.  Based on your experience with eating more, should I be eating at least 2200 daily?

I obsess too.  I don't weigh myself multiple times per day, I weigh about three times a week, always in the morning after I've emptied my bladder.  The number on that scale usually determines my mood for the day.  Lately, it's been really crappy.  Today it's REALLY crappy.

My husband has taken the scale from me and put it in his work truck so I cannot get to it.  The tape measure will probably be next.  Then I'll have to find some other form of measure to obsess over.

Weight Loss *gasp* Gastric Bypass?! Apr 14 2009

I work with a lady who had gastric banding done last year.  She has lost weight, but I see her eating fast food Chinese, burgers, etc. all the time and I think to myself, what has she learned?  Granted, she cannot eat very much, but why choose that in the first place when your main goal is to be healthy?

I do understand why some people get the surgery.  In their minds it is the only option left to save their lives.  If I were 500+ lbs. and faced with dying, I'd opt for the surgery and hope for the best.  For me, I'd rather do this slowly than cut up my internal organs.

I just recently asked my doctor for help with losing the last 40-50 lbs.  Her reply?  She gave me a referral for gastric bypass surgery.  That is absolutely the last thing I want.  I did read through the packet I received however, and I would have to gain back 60 lbs. and develop a co-morbidity just to be considered.

I did do my research several years ago when I had 100 lbs. to lose, even asked my doctor at the time for a referral.  She wouldn't give me one.  Probably the best thing she could have done for me.  She wanted me to do it on my own because she said, and others here have mentioned, that you don't learn how to eat properly and most people go through all that pain only to gain the weight back.  The cons far outweigh any positives gained from having the surgery.  I love my hair thank you very much and I just know that I would have chronic digestive/intestinal problems for the rest of my life.

I didn't know Carnie Wilson gained back the weight?

Fitness Any good, non-dancy, beginner step aerobics videos? Apr 13 2009

A couple to try:  Kari Anderson's Go: Step for Beginners (features people of all shapes and sizes) or Kathy Smith's Step Workout or Great Buns and Thighs videos (these are a little older, thong leotards anyone).  You could also check out Gin Miller videos as well.  None of these are dancy, IMO.  I also really like Petra Kolber's PK Step.  This is a little dancy, but not too bad.

Collage Video (collagevideo.com) has a great selection of step aerobics videos and they're all rated so you know what you're getting.  Amazon.com too.

Have fun!

I don't log my activities here so I cannot offer a comparison.  I do still wear my HRMin addition to my GoWear Fit and notice the HRM is about 200 calories less than the GWF for many of the activities I do (boot camp, running/jogging, weight lifting, etc.)  I believe this is because the GWF uses heat and sweat to figure out your burn (in addition to the stats you put in) whereas the HRM is just the stats you plug into it when you set it up.  Anybody knows something different, please share.

I've had the GWF for a week now and have worn it about 23 hours each and every day.  I have discovered that, on average, I burn 3300ish calories per day and have been seriously under eating.  This is probably why I have been on a plateau for over a year.  I will begin adjusting my calories accordingly this week, and hopefully when I weigh in on Friday I will see a loss.

This has most definately been worth the investment.  I've been to two different nutritionists who both told me to eat 1400-1600 calories.  It chaps my hide knowing I paid for that ridiculous advice.

I, too, have huge muscular calves.  Try Silhouettes.com or, sometimes, Naturalizer.com.  Shoeline.com carries several brands like Sofft or Softspots that may also have boots for the more generously sized leg.

bdasko, very sound advice.  Thank you.  This week I am working on figuring out what I burn each day depending on the activity for that day.  On days I burn the most I will need to eat in the 3000 calorie range to get the 1000 cal deficit.   On lighter training days I'll need to eat a little less, probably 2600-2800.  I just need to figure this out so I'll know going forward how much I need to eat and can plan accordingly.  Hopefully this is the last week without any change.  I cannot believe I'm going to eat 3000 on a regular basis.  Scary!

I've spent so long trying to get this right, and I just want to reveal that fantastic body I know is under this remaining layer of fat.  I actually spent 8 months last year building up muscle with a personal trainer, so I know a muscular body is in here somewhere.

Hi octo! Yes, definitely going to add/increase the nutrient dense foods.  I know we've discussed before how much I love peanut butter!  How was your wedding/honeymoon?

Okay, I'm going to aim for anywhere between 2200-2500 calories on my active days and 1800-2000 on the days I don't exercise (only 1).

bdasko, thank you for the recipe!  Congratulations on your success.  I think you're losing the slow, healthy way.  Kudos to you.

I agree that there are some who only need to eat 1200-1500 calories.  I'm just not one of them and thank God for that!  I did eat 1200 calories for about four months from July - October, 2007.  I lost 25 lbs., but I was miserable.  I hit a wall in October 2007, and while I was able to lose a little more weight after that, I completely stopped in March 2008 and haven't lost anything since.

Wow, chrissy, that looks like a ton of food; but you're right, when put together it really isn't that much.  Thanks so much for the suggestions.  I'm going to print this out and try it on Saturday.  I've got just about everything on your list at home right now.

Thank you for your help!

P.S., I have burned enough calories so far this week to lose 3.5 lbs.  Probably not going to happen because I haven't been eating enough, but once I do get the eating part right, I'm confident that I will start to see that scale number go down again!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I love milk, so I could absolutely include a couple glasses in my day.  Perhaps even a glass of OJ with breakfast.  I haven't had juice in so long because of the calories.  I usually do have some nuts or peanut butter, but as those calories approach 2000, I get freaked out and usually don't eat them.  I cannot believe how brainwashed I am, still, knowing that I need to eat to lose.

So, bdasko, are you eating in the 2500-3000 range and losing?  Would you mind sharing your recipe for the muffins?  That would be a great pre-workout boost (with a glass of milk of course!)

I love it when people notice!  There are several regulars at the gym who have seen me go from my highest weight to my current weight (-58 lbs.) who have commented on my transformation.

This morning at boot camp class, one of the ladies commented that I am melting away before her eyes.  That is the absolute best motivation and keeps me going.

Thanks everyone!  The funny thing is, one of the women I'm helping has lost 8 lbs. and is down one pant size!  She came over to me this morning and gave me a big hug because she's wearing pants that she wasn't able to fit into before her last pregnancy.  At least it's working for her.  :o)

Kaufmkk, right now I participate in a boot camp style workout 2-3 days per week and I am doing my training runs 3 x/week.  The boot camp is a total body beat-down.  It is really the hardest thing I have ever done.  Lots of squats, lunges, push ups, etc. and abs.  On two of the days I run, I also get in a weight lifting session on my lunch hour.  Since I get so much for my legs with the boot camp and running, I primarily focus on upper body and abs during the lunch time sessions.

I have never been a person who liked to run.  Who me?  Only when being chased by someone really scary with a big knife!  I have found though that I can put in my ear phones and just zone out.  I started running using the Couch-to-5K program.  Perhaps that would be useful to you as well?

Best of health!

I recently went to the mall to look for a couple new blouses for work.  I've been wearing the smallest size in the plus-size department, so I picked up a few things to try on and they were too big!  I ended up buying the same items I had tried on, but in the regular women's department.  Now I just have to go down one more size before I can also shop for pants in the regular women's department.  I cannot wait until I no longer have to go to the plus-size section!

Also, feeling your ribs when laying down.  I had no idea they were there!  :o)

The Lounge Family.... Mar 25 2009

I don't have any contact with any of my family.  They are all manipulative liars who drink too much.

I did have a relationship with my sister until August 2007.  She and I got into a shouting match and I threw her out of my house and had planned on never speaking to her again.  She also called the local PD on my husband who accidentally bumped into her when she was exiting my house and he was entering.  She literally sat outside my house in her car for two hours waiting for the PD to show to take her report.  Needless to say, no charges were filed and they made her leave.  Two days later she sent me a filthy, profanity-laden email attacking not only me, but also my then seven-year-old daughter who has never done anything to anyone.  Attacks on me are fine, but no one, and I mean no one, messes with my baby.  I'll tear your beating heart out and feed it to you.  :o)

I have tried and tried and tried to have a relationship with my mother.  She is just such a victim and it drives me crazy!  I haven't seen her in over two years now, have only spoken with her about six times during that period.  What's worse, she doesn't bother to call her granddaughter on her birthday or any other special days.  Whatever.  We're better off without them.

I think Curves works for some, but I joined several years ago and was so disappointed.  I never saw any results and I went 5 days/wk. for six months.  I also felt the routine was easy and boring.  I especially didn't like how you had to prance around between each machine.  The machines also sucked.  Overall, I'm sorry I wasted my money.

After my year was up, I joined a regular gym with group fitness classes, regular cardio machines and free weights and dropped 60 lbs.  I was getting bored with that, so I started running outside and participating in a boot camp class outdoors three nights/wk.  I haven't lost any more weight, but my body is getting leaner and stronger.

I hope you have a better experience.  Good luck!

I have a Polar F6.  Found it on Amazon.com for under $100.00.  It does track the calories you burn while working out.  I try to burn no less than 2000 calories per week in exercise and this makes tracking effortless.  The only complaint I have is the chest strap can be uncomfortable when wearing an underwire sports bra.

If you want something that you wear all day and night (except when showering) to track all calories burned, try the GoWear Fit.  It's made by the same company that makes the BodyBugg (as used on The Biggest Loser) but it's cheaper.  Found it on Amazon.com for $169.00 (as opposed to over $200).  For that price you get three months of the online subscription for free and then it's just $6.95/month if you sign up for a year.

There is a monthly subscription that goes along with the BB.  Without that subscription, you cannot upload your info to check your stats and track them over the long term.  I think it's between $10-16 per month.  I would definately check the sight about the subscription fee.  There is a watch that you use in tandem with the BB that gives you real-time readouts of your caloric expenditure, number of steps taken, etc.  I'm not sure though if this can be used in place of the online site.

I wear compression capris/shorts when I run and they are terrific.  My butt doesn't wiggle at all.  :o)  Found them at Land's End.  They are of excellent quality and really comfortable.  For compression tops, try New Balance Web Express (www.nbwebexpress.com).  They have lots to choose from and an excellent return policy should an item not work out.  Also, most running stores would have items you could try on to see if they fit your needs.  Some of the big box stores (i.e. Big 5, Sports Authority, etc.) would have items to try on as well.

Good luck.

I worked out with a PT for 8 months last year.  It made a huge difference.  I thought I was pretty fit from doing Step classes and lifting weights on my own, but I was wrong.  I gained so much strength and endurance working out with him and saw some noticeable differences in my body.  No workout was the same, so I was never bored.  He even got me into running and I will run my first 5K in May.  I worked out twice per week at $45 per session.

With any PT, but especially those at a gym (where they may not have the proper education and certification), interview them first and make it clear what your expectations are (i.e. you expect to not be put on a machine and left on your own, for even a few minutes).  You're paying for their time and it should be 100% devoted to you while you are with them.

Update:

So, based on the advice I received from smwhipple and gi-jane, I increased my calories.  Guess what?  I'm down 4 lbs in the last two weeks!  I had to update this post and thank you ladies.  Thank you!

I've been zig-zagging my calories, with the lowest being 1750 and the highest being 2450 (!) and I'm losing again.  The incredible thing is that I have energy to do my workouts again.  I was completely exhausted after an intense boot camp workout but now, I feel good afterwards.  Tired, but not completely wiped out.

Some days, I do struggle to eat all of my alloted calories, it's just so much food.  I have to eat every 2.5 hours to get it all in 5 smaller meals.  I do not go below 1750, no matter what.  That seems to be allowing me a 1.5 - 2 lbs. per week loss, which is exactly what I'm going for.

I'm so grateful for you guys.  Thank you again.

First off, you aren't sedentary.  Rerun your stats and choose active.  You're not eating enough for your activity level.

I found a web site to help me figure out how many calories to eat for my activity level.  I've been zig-zagging using the recommendations given and have been successful.  I plugged your stats in and this is what came back:

Ex Fat Loss Fat Loss Maintain

Friday 1160 1449 1811

Saturday 1328 1771 2214

Sunday 1208 1610 2012

Try the fat loss (middle column) and see how that goes.  You should absolutely not be eating at 1200 calories every day.  I was eating much lower than I should have been and was stuck for a very long time.  I listened to the advice given in this forum and upped my calories and have lost 4 lbs. over the last two weeks.

Good luck!

smwhipple, thanks for your input.  Yes, the nutritionist was aware of my activity level.  I had to turn in food and exercise logs prior to my appointment so the nutritionist could analyze them.  She did tell me that activity isn't really factored into how many calories a person eats.  I found that a little weird because everything I've ever read says to increase your calories if you're active.  Needless to say, I hadn't lost any weight before I did the program and I haven't lost any since.  I do use a Polar F4 HRM.  I love it.  At the end of the week it tells me how many exercise sessions I've completed and how many calories I burned.  I bought it for the specific purpose of figuring out what I was burning so I could adjust my calorie intake.  I burn right around 2000-2200 calories a week from exercise.  Before I did the analysis, I was eating 1700-1900 calories daily based on my BMR calculations (1739 using the Harris-Benedict formula).  That 1739 doesn't factor in activity.  She said that was too high.  I am very frustrated right now.  I eat very well, exercise and get enough sleep and yet, weight loss remains elusive.  The funny thing is that I was working out with a personal trainer for most of last year and was eating in the 1700-1900 range the whole time.  I didn't lose any scale weight, but I'd never looked better (my measurements didn't change either).  I was stronger and my upper body especially was really leaning out and getting some definition.  My legs and butt too.  Strangers that also worked out at the same time would tell me that I was looking terrific.  I guess I will try upping my calories back to the level I was at before I saw the sports nutritionist and see what happens.  I always thought heavier people had to eat more and then you reduce your calories as you lose the weight.  I can't imagine reducing my calories below 1400 with 45-50 lbs. left to lose.  I would be starving by the time I reached my goal.

gi-jane, yes, I did set the calculator to very active.  Like I said, inept.  :o)

I tried the CC calculator and I arrived at 2250 to maintain?  I must be completely inept.

I am so curious now why on earth a nutritionist would tell me 1400-1600?  I will try gradually increasing my calories and stay at a higher level for a little while to see if that works.  I haven't had any positive results in so long, what can it hurt?

I start training for my first 5K next month (on top of the boot camp x2/wk) and the other exercise I do.  Hopefully raising my calories for a time combined with the extra effort will do the trick.   Fingers crossed!

I'm 5'4" and currently weigh 219 lbs.  I have gained 11 lbs. over the last three months eating 1400-1600 cal.  What's weird is that I am still wearing my clothes comfortably.  I am naturally more muscular.  I've calculated my BMR to be 1739 calories using the Harris-Benedict formula.  If I add in my activity (which I always keep at sedentary, even though I work out a lot) that ups the calories to 2087 (1749 x 1.2).  Is maintenace the BMR (1739) calories?  I don't know how to calculate what maintenance would be for me at my current weight.

I just finished C25K myself.  I initially started in March, but, due to injuries, I had to stop and re-start again.  I am now consistently running 5k at least three times per week.   As others here have said, don't rush the process.  As the program instructs, don't skip ahead and definitely repeat weeks if necessary.  Also, you can download the podcasts for each week of the program.

Good luck to you!

Fitness Can muscles retain water? Sep 25 2008

Congrats on your success.

Absolutely muscle retains water.  Any change in routine will likely cause you to retain.  It only lasts for a few days so solider on.

I encourage you to incorporate more strength training into your workouts.  If you want to lose BF but not lean mass (which should be every woman's goal IMO), that's your best method.  The scale is not an accurate measurement tool so don't be discouraged.

A tape measure only costs a few bucks and it is a much better tool for tracking your progress.

Best of luck to you.
