excuse to pig out.

false reasoning.. don't do it.

you need to have a balanced diet no matter what event you are participating in.. yes athletes don't do well on low-carb/no-carb diets because you need that energy that comes from carbs to fuel your workouts for best performance, but you do not need to go overboard.. something like 40% carbs, 35% protein, and 25% fat will do just fine.

eating more carbs (especially if they are simple carbs) a day or two in advance is not really going to help you.. if anything eat a meal containing complex slow-burning carbs before your event to supply energy

and drink water before, after, and during your event to make sure you are adequatly hydrated, this is very important

Yeah, that's what I suspect as well.  I sure wish it was the former though - Just to take the guilt off the cheat meal.

Melicious - it's not my 1st event, but I've just noticed I've tried (my understanding of) carb loading pre-event in the past, and not noticed any real benefit.  This one is MS150, and I think I'll skip the carb-loading and just eat regularly and stayed hydrated fueled throughout the ride.

If I were a man, I'd be huge by now.

Just to point out, it's really hard for anyone (men included) to put on muscle.  It may be easier for men, but it's still far from easy.  Take a look around your gym sometime, I'd bet that at least 90% of the teenage guys in there (who are at their peak in terms of testosterone production) are doing everything they can to build huge muscles.  How many of them look like bodybuilders?

I am a man, and huge still eludes me.

I'm starting to wish I was one of the cc women who put on 10 lbs of bothersome, bulky, manly muscle by walking past the gym.

Fitness spinning vs road biking Mar 24 2009

I'll add a little too...

That rental+training thing sounds good.  What a great way to get your feet wet, and figure out if you even like it before spending a whole bunch!

On bikes:

While they are neat and fancy, there really is nothing magical about a tri bike vs. a road bike.  There were lots of people finishing, and winning triathlons before there was such a thing as tri bikes.  It's not like somebody becomes a world class triathlete because they buy a world class bike, or some terrible catastrophe will befall you if you finish on a road bike.  In fact (and I fully anticipate I may get flamed for this) - I bet a LOT of people would improve their performance by investing more time in training than money in bikes.  There's also a LOT of people out there doing road rides in uncomfortable misery because they have a very nice, very expensive tri bike that just isn't set up for road miles.

At purchase time, like somebody else said, get properly fit.  And different brands (even different models within brands) have slightly different geometries, so try a couple different ones in your price range.  To get the most for your money, look for leftover previous year models, or check with your local bike club/ classifieds/ CL for a used bike.  A used bike + a hundred dollar tune up at the bike shop may get you on a bike that would be 2-3 times your new bike price range.  Some shops also have a trade-in/ trade-up program, where you can get some store credit when you buy a new bike.

Fitness Annoying gym guy rant Mar 24 2009

old thread, new annoying guy:

Grunty McGee.

Starts every set with a loud Rick Flair "WHOOoooo!!", then grunts out every rep like he's just been punched in the gut.  I'm not talking about a barely audible "hhhmph" either, I'm talking full on Monica Seles "grawHOUUUMPH!" you can ear through the whole gym.

  1. You're doing 12 reps.  The first 6 or 8 can't be that freakin hard.
  2. You're not a little guy, and you're lifting less than me, and I'm not setting any records.  It really can't be that hard.

Please, take out your headphones long enough to hear yourself, and the world around you, maybe you'll realize that the full-body workout does not need to include your vocal cords.

Okay, glad I'm not alone.  If it's the difference between sitting on the couch and doing wii Fit, then go for it.  If it's the difference between a workout and wii fit, you might as well sit on the couch.

Fitness What a ......croc? Exercise variation...? Mar 04 2009
20:24 (UTC)

I feel pretty ridiculous all the time at the gym, although that has more to do with me than the exercises, but

  • mountain climbers
  • raised barbell split squats
  • medicine ball woodchoppers
  • any of the lamaze class positions they do in "amped abs", particularly when my shorts slide up to my hips

all have an extra layer of goofballness in them.

Dang, I'm cool.

6'2, 197 lbs, 16 % body fat.  Pretty "large" build.  I dunno if that's "ideal" but it's reasonably comfortable for me.

Down from 250 lbs at heaviest, 188 at lowest.  Agreed, the BMI is a decent approximate starting guide, but not necessarily the standard to shoot for.

erm, this might be offensive to some women who are naturally top heavy or not proportionate because they're lacking in that department.

I suppose it could be, but you hit on it already.  naturally is very rarely disproportionate.  My rant is not about overall size, it's about people picking cartoonish dimensions, and ruining naturally beautiful bodies.

Hey, I have no problem with Jessica Rabbit, the individual - heck, she's even on my "list of celebrities you'd like to...."  Just saying that as a goal for 3 dimensional persons, it's comical and ridiculous.

And I'm not anti-surgery either - I'm just frustrated and angered with seeing very nice pairs messed up.

If you're introduced as "This is my friend 'K', and her boobs", you may have gone a step too far.

Fitness Gaining muscle - how much? Feb 27 2009

Yeah, that's sedentary maintenance - but it seems pretty accurate for me at workout maintenance - I've been at 195 ish for a YEAR - (is there some kind of prize for longest plateau?) - Granted, theres been plenty of days over & under - but average probably right around 2400.

Doing weights 3 x weekly, cardio at least 3 x weekly, but backing off cardio some while trying to build.

Fitness Lifting/Diet Questions Feb 05 2009
16:03 (UTC)

I started out with stats very similar to yours (but add a few years...).  Now 6'2, 195, 16% bf.  No hero, but comfortable.  My experience was pretty much right in line with what floggingsully & vicki8seekers said, so I'll just expand my thoughts on what they said...

1.  Cardio after weights.  Usually not more than 1/2 hour, then more intense & maybe longer cardio on off days.

2.  Whey protein is fine, and is an easy boost to get your daily protein in, but is NOT mandatory.  You're probably not going to add significant muscle mass in a calorie deficit, so overloading on protein isn't going to give any added benefit other than the mental exercise of trying to fit in the calories.

3.  I got nuthin.

4.  Body part splits are ok if you're doing compound movements, but a better  fat burning workout is one that incorporates the whole body.  Once you get down to a body level you are comfortable with, and you are ready to start trying to build muscle, (remember, building muscle and burning fat are pretty much mutually exclusive) body part splits may be appropriate.  Not to mention it's a lot more efficient time wise to work the whole body in 6-8 exercises than 1 part a day in 10.  Mens Health (no affiliation, just good routines) has a full-body workout pull-out poster in every issue.

5.  Don't overthink it.  Calorie deficit + healthy foods + exercise (weight training + cardio) will cover 90% of the fat loss you want to achieve.

Weight Loss 1 year report card. Feb 05 2009
15:07 (UTC)

wow, thanks!

You reminded me that I wanted to put up a few "lessons learned" from this journey...

  • You have to eat to lose.
  • Healthy weight loss (diet+exercise) is more fun, more doable, more maintainable, and a LOT less hungry (i hate hungry) than unhealthy starvation, bad ideas, and crazy diets.  Not to mention looking a lot better fit than skinny fat.  I mean, maintaining fairly comfortably at <200 w/ healthy vs struggling to get & stay there w/ unhealthy.
  • Salad is good.  You can have other than salad.
  • Weight loss advice is NOT one size fits all.  Do what works & fits for you and your goals.
  • Have a goal.
  • Weight loss is a result, not a goal.
  • The scale is not the measure of success.  If I eat right and exercise right, I succeeded, regardless of what the scale says.

Hopefully something in there is useful to somebody.

I thought all crimes were committed by old men in masks.  Thanks, Scoob!

Lots of the kids in the neighborhood thought if we jumped from something high enough with some home-made wings, a large enough balloon, or an umbrella, we could fly, or at least gently float down.  It's a miracle we didn't break our legs.

For way too long to think so, my brother thought babies came out of, uhh, the other side.

He also said once, while examining the night sky, "Man, I bet some of those stars are like 2 STATES apart!"

+1 on eating seeds, but it was apple seeds for us.

ETA (reminded by the "time zone line in the hotel room):  Fun trick to play on kids or gullible first-time flyers - When flying over a well visible road, tell them its a state line.  Make sure you let them tell at least somebody else that they saw the state line from the plane.

Looks and beauty have a dramatic impact on first impression and first interest - but attraction and continued interest hinge on personality.

A beautiful woman with an abhorrent personality will still be beautiful, but not attractive.

A plain jane will become attractive, even beautiful, with an attractive personality.
