What a great idea - I love reading all the positive messages people put about themselves for this post!!  As for me:

1. My long, healthy hair has always been attractive

2. My eyes are very expressive

3. I have elegant hands

How motivated are you?  I usually find that I can make just about anything to suit my tastes...of course it isn't pre-packaged or grab-n-go without some planning.

Suggestion - make air-popped popcorn balls with molasses and vegan chocolate chips.  :)  A little will go a long way (popcorn filler) and it will taste chocolaty and sinful without being too high-calorie (as long as you don't overdo the molasses...use as "glue" not "coating").

I think it was Fabienne in Pulp Fiction who said it best..."It's unfortunate what we find pleasing to the touch and pleasing to the eye is seldom the same."  LOL

My boyfriend has recently followed my example (he's sweet, always said how proud he was of my accomplishments) and he lost a bunch of the "padding," putting on muscle instead.  [side note: his arms are like rocks and he's been working out 3 months - it took me over a YEAR to get hard arms...SO many differences btwn men and women...] I find he is better looking...but I don't like laying my head on his arms anymore...snuggling is definitely less comfortable!!  Oh well...

I'm glad I'm not the only one!  Little different circumstances...for my birthday I got a gift card to a store I'm not familiar with, so I went there to see if anything fit me.  I was trying on a couple of things, none of which fit, when my boyfriend said we were going to be late for his mother's dinner.  In a rush I pulled on MY dress (the one I wore in)...it was a bit tight I knew but lovely and (mostly) flattering and I wanted to impress his family that day...well, I couldn't get it zipped up.  I rushed and pulled too hard and heard this awful tearing sound!  I'd ripped the zipper completely loose from the back of the dress.  I was trapped in the fitting room with nothing to wear out into the store to ask for help, much less to dinner that night!  I had to call out for help...then ask the sales girl to help me find SOMETHING that fit so that I could buy it and leave the store.  I ended up going to dinner that night in a pale blue, stretch-crocheted waist crepe mini skirt (TOO short) and white button-down ruched shirt that pulled at the bust.  :(  I was so embarrassed...

Happy ending:  when I lost more weight my boyfriend surprised me with that same  dress...he'd had the zipper repaired and the dress sized down too so it would fit right.  He probably spent $100 or more on it, when the dress was a $50 thing from JC Penney, but it was so thoughtful and I loved it!

Weight Loss Need a little help... Jun 10 2009

Oh boy, there are so many complications our bodies can throw at us...let me see here...

Did you check the calorie burn meter according to your stats here on CC?  Try to aim for a 500 calorie deficit each day.

If you're just doing 30-60 minutes of steady aerobic activity 3x per week, you have adapted to that already.  Do 20 minutes of squats, pushups, etc..."resistance" type moves (no equipment/weights needed here), then do some interval cardio, like 30 seconds of pushing yourself hard (but not overly so in the beginning...be smart), then 2 minutes of slower motion, alternating for 20 minutes.  You should see changes in your body shape if not the scale immediately, which can sustain you through a weight plateau and keep you on track.

Also, look at the types of food you're consuming.  Are you eating too much fruit?  Too much salt?  Not enough protien (vital for losing weight)?  Too little fiber (ai for 25 grams a day)?  Balance your diet to try and get a wide range of nutrients while shooting for 30% healthy fats, 30% lean protien, and 40% whole-grain carbs.  You may have lost quickly in the beginning because of sudden changes you made, but not be eating cleanly enough to keep losing from here.

Be patient with yourself...stress won't help you!  :)  Make more changes and remember to breathe...it's about endurance not speed in this venture (I know, it took me 3 years to get to my ideal weight, but I made it)!!

Low-fat dairy (as mentioned here) is awesome for breakfast.  It's so high in protien and low in carbs...also the higher fat versions will help you start the day off feeling fuller (though they are higher in calories, so watch portion sizes).  I like Nancy's Organic Cultured Lowfat cottage cheese and FAGE greek yogurts...

I also recommend Flatout wraps - the light ones have 90 calories, 9 grams of fiber, and 9 grams of protien.  I use them to wrap up a chopped "egg salad" with diced egg, cucumbers, peppers, and greek yogurt.

THANK you spirochete!!!  And good job to you too, littlejudy!  It's definitely a lifestyle change, and I certainly had to deal with friends/boyfriends/family when they urged me to "just stop" losing weight (I have a small frame and knew my BMI, and they thought I ought to quit at 165lbs...HA!)  I'm in semi-shock now from the recent news...it just doesn't make sense to keep to my original goal now if I'm "healthy" already...that would be mildly obsessive (and therefore unhealthy) right?  Mental....adjustment....processing....

I really can relate, though my saboteur was an overweight boyfriend of 8 years who lived with me, not a husband...

His common lines were "you make me feel guilty for eating what I want," "why don't you eat with me anymore," and "I don't understand why you want other men to look at you when you already have a boyfriend."  Keeping in mind I was 215 lbs with a BMI of 32 and trying to lose weight so that I could avoid the onset of diabetes and high blood pressure...

That relationship ended for me...but again I was not married to him.  I hope your husband can change his behavior for love of you.  Even if he can't, never stop loving and appreciating (and trying to improve upon) yourself!!!  You are worth the effort, and worth someone's support and encouragement.  You sound sensible enough to know that already, but we ALL need to HEAR IT sometimes.  :-)

That sounds odd to me...are you eating a lot of high sodium foods?  I'd bet it's water weight, especially if you're making big changes all of a sudden.  I didn't check your math or your age, but be sure you're not creating too big of a calorie deficit with your reduced intake plus workouts.  Ideally, you want a deficit of around 500 calories.  You could try cycling your intake (1800 to 1400 to 1300 to 1600, etc.).

I've got a good one: FREE FOOD!  I'm always over-eating when it comes to free food.  It's like I know I'm full but I go back for more anyway.  Undecided  I need to come up with a punishment for myself when I do that!

Yeah, I'd like to add buffets to that...be it at a wedding or one I've paid for (gotta get my money's worth then)...I nearly always do it right the first time (1/2 plate veggies, 1/4 lean protein, 1/4 whole grains or healthy carbs)...then I go back and sample all the things I've seen on other people's plates!   I usually get a tummy ache for my greed, though...

15-20 packets seems like a lot to me...I don't consume anything in that high a quantity (relative quantity, I mean).  I have 1 packet if I drink coffee to make it more palatable.  For me, it's a trade off - I could use plain raw sugar, but that means I must have less of something I like even better (like fruit, or nuts) in order to meet my calorie goals.  I know my tastes have adjusted to less sugar and salt over time...yours probably would too.  If you could begin to cut back on the sweet flavors in your diet, you might even like the taste of the plain foods better...just an idea...

Hey guys, whats wrong with Splenda??  I'm new to this site so what did I miss about Splends, I use it cause it's not sugar and it taste great.

Well, the "jury" is still out on this one, and goodness knows everyone has an opinion, but here is a link (probably not the best one, but hey) that discusses some of the negative sides of Splenda:

http://www.splendaexposed.com/articles/2005/1 1/the_hidden_chem.html

In general, the idea is that any chemically altered, "created" foods are just never going to be as safe or good for you as natural whole foods, and since nutrition is just not all clear to us yet and we are still making discoveries, the fear is that the artificial foods and substances we create to "cheat" calories or fat could have dangerous side effects, potentially ones we can't even guess at yet...

I definitely agree that there is no "evil food" (real foods, that is), and chocolate, ice cream, natural sugars, butter, and wine/beer and coffee aren't that bad when consumed in moderation, and possibly even have health benefits in small quantities (debated, but possible).

It seems like hard liquor (does that have any health benefits at all, I don't recall ever hearing that it does) and artificial sweeteners, soda pop of any kind, severe calorie restriction, eating oversized portions / seriously overindulging in ANYTYHING, and smoking all definitely qualify as "KNOW better, but do it anyway!" Those things we just know are bad for our bodies, but because of taste, or habit, or addiction, or rationalizing, we still do them!  For most of us it doesn't seem to reach the level of an actual health disorder, thankfully!  I suppose it's just a side effect of being human...

If I die of cancer from eating Splenda, it's my own dang fault.  ;)

OH yes, I'm the same when it comes to wine...definitely a trap for me.  I CANNOT stop at one glass!!  I guess alcohol in general would be one of those "know I shouldn't but do it anyway" areas.

And I, too, try to compensate sometimes when I ought to just get back on the wagon (e.g. no dinner, since I ate too much at lunch).  Ugh....

High protein sources that are non-soy:

Greek yogurt (a little tart, so I use it in place of sour cream), Spinach has an amazing amount of protein for a veggie, eggs, especially the whites, are good if you can eat them as a semi-vegetarian (I'm not one, so I don't know), flax seed is good to add to dishes for extra protein and good fats, supplements like GNC's whey protein powders, and there are MANY kinds of beans/lentils that help you keep things varied.

Hope that helps, and good luck with the allergy test.  Hopefully it's just one kind of soy that's bothering you!!

Keep up the positive attitudes!!  That helps so much in reducing stress and whittling away the pounds.  Keep plugging away, keeping with the healthy eating, regular exercise (including muscle-building...BIG fan of that), and non-food rewards!  Aging is inevitable, but I feel like I'm marching towards improving myself with every passing month.  :)

Weight Loss bra bulge? Feb 16 2009

Exellent advice here about bra fitting - in addition let me add that I always had "bulge" over the back of my bra strap (and a little on the sides of the cups, too) until I began to do weight lifting!!  It's partially genetic and weight related, and I'm sure my solution wouldn't work for everyone, but just in case, I wanted to share.

I do "rows" or lat pulldowns to strengthen my back muscles, and I found that this helped tone up my back and the layer of fat has diminished.  It's not gone, but it's SO much better.  No such thing as spot-reducing, I realize, but the muscle toning has definitely helped me anyway.  :)

Fitness Is It True? Feb 16 2009
19:04 (UTC)

Ok, here's my (limited) knowledge on the subject:

Muscle tissue burns more calories than adipose (fat) tissue.  I'm not sure about the details, but I know it's not a HUGE (like 20-1) difference, but it does make a difference.  At any rate, it can't hurt the average person to gain a little more muscle, right?

With no equipment, you can build leg muscle with squats and lunges (performed accurately, with the knee never extending past the foot) and calf-lifts - you can hold something with weight to give you extra resistance when you need it, but your own body weight could be sufficient in the beginning...for arms and chest, I favor pushups, which you can increase in difficulty by going to knuckles, or one-handed, etc.  Also you can do core workouts like planks, situps with leg lifts, standing twists with something heavy in your hands (I use this huge jar that used to contain pickles, filled with water...LOL).  Check online for workout routines - they are EVERYWHERE.  Just be careful to keep your limitations in mind and don't hurt yourself...check with your doctor if you're new to working out and if you have any injuries or weak spots!!

Good luck!  And don't be fooled, you really don't need to buy most of the expensive workout equipment and props...the only things I bought are a balance ball and a floor mat.  :)  Then again, I'm not training for anything or going for body-builder toning, just working out to keep solid muscle and stay healthy!

Foods Fiber tablets for feeling full? Feb 16 2009

Thanks for the info - that was really helpful!  I do add flax seed to my oatmeal sometimes, or mix it into my pasta sauce...

I was drawn in by the added benefit of calcium, plus the convenience of chew tablets (no need to mix with water).  Although I'm constantly drinking water, I drink it from a glass and not a bottle, so shaking a mix-in is not an option.  :)

Still, it seems like not such a good bargain after all...

Sadly, it depends on the manufacturer of the clothing.  I measure 35" bust, 25" waist, and 34" hips and I am wearing size 2 (and even zero) in some brands, and size 4 or 5 in other brands...it totally depends on the cut, too.  Women's sizes are NEVER easy!  :(  It seriously seems like clothing sizes run bigger than they used to (a perk when I was large, but not so much now).

I have one - similar to yours gurlywurly - I was in my apt. complex fitness center at night all by myself and I was running on the treadmill.  I had a TV on to provide distraction, when suddenly I heard a noise behind me that made me think someone else had come into the fitness center.  I turned my head and didn't see anyone by the door, so I got startled and turned the other way around to see if a person was in there that I hadn't seen (night time, alone at the fitness center, single female, OK so I was worried).  I promptly lost my balance and stepped off of the belt, so when I put my other foot down I went FLYING off the end of the treadmill.  When I landed on my butt at the end of the belt, my sweat pants got CAUGHT in the moving belt and I couldn't pull them out!  I saved myself by taking them off and getting up to turn off the treadmill (so THAT'S what those emergency red stop plugs are for).  At that point, 3 guys walk into the fitness center to see me standing, sweaty and bruised and pantless, on the stationary treadmill.  I was utterly humiliated.  At least one of them (laughing) helped me get my pants detangled from the belt.  I fled to my apt. as soon as I could to nurse my pride and ugly purple bruises.  Oh, and that noise I heard?  It was the automatic AIR FRESHENER going off!!

Having been over 30 for...8 days now...I can say I'm REALLY "over" it.  Feels no different, and as a side bonus the metabolism jolt from eating ice cream, lasagna, piles of cheese and birthday cake for a few days then going back to clean eating has helped me drop a few lbs...closer than ever to my goal!!

Suggestions re: the cake and lasagna. Maybe just take a couple of bites. Eating a small piece of lasagna and then adjusting the rest of your day's diet around that might be an easy solution, since it is only one day and not all the time. Same goes for the cake--just take a few bites and compliment your friend on how delicious it is. There's no reason to explain why you won't/can't eat more. :)

Just a thought...

Good thought...if I can manage to stoke up my willpower enough after a small taste to walk away from chowing down!!  :)  Mentally I'm doing a yo-yo:  "only live once enjoy the taste treats it's my big 30th B-day darn it" VS "no food is worth this stress just stick with healthy it pays off."

Wow, it's like you read my mind...I'm having a fat MONTH.  I've been struggling with settling into maintenance and NOT trying for the next lowest "number" on the scale, and then my birthday hits and everyone is kindly taking me out to eat, etc. and I saw to my horror the scale is up 5 lbs from two weeks ago and that is definitely not maintenance.  I am trying to soothe myself by remembering that once this patch of errant eating is over, I can just jump back on the CC wagon and take the weight (probably half water anyway) back off.  Mentally, though, it hurts...and my clothes still fit exactly the same and I have no reason to complain in truth.  I struggle because for so long I had a "goal," and then I reached it (YAY!) and now I feel like holding on to it is harder than anything.  I keep thinking "oh, the scale isn't dropping, I need to do something about that"...it's a hard pattern to break after 3 years...

Wow, I really need this right now...I'm 29, 5'6" and 132lbs trying to shave off the last 7 or so (small frame).  I was SOOO close, down to 127 when suddenly mid-summer hit and vacations started and all my progress went out the window as I ate out in unfamiliar cities, went camping/floating, and now my birthday is next week (the big 3-0) and I know there's a party being planned, and dinners, and I just can't stand the idea of my whole summer of hard work being ruined over 3 weeks!!!!

Ok guys...strength...I need strength.  How do I decline a slice of birthday cake (carrot w/ cream cheese frosting, it really is my favorite) someone home-baked for me, or a slice of lasagna from a friend I see twice a year, or an after-work ice cream with the guys in the office (I work with all guys) as my "big birthday" salute?  I can't say I'm still dieting...they'd all laugh since I'm not the 210 lbs I used to be, so they think I should be "done."  Guess Sept. will be the month for restitution after August seriously sets me back...(btw I know to eat in moderation when it's the bad stuff, but even a small piece of my friend's awesome lasagna is like 500 calories...).  I feel doomed...
