Foods the best snack/fiber/protein/granola bar? Jun 08 2008

They're pretty tasty, and very much like candy bars.  Honestly, they're better than all the other bars that have been suggested here (especially those stupid Lara Bars or Luna whatever).  I like to take small bites and chew them well to enjoy them more as well.

Snicker's Marathon bars are pretty good, though mainly their Low Carb and Nutrition series.  I can't find their entry here on Calorie Count, but Calorie King has the entry for them.  They do have a bar thats 150 calories:

7g fiber, and 11g protein (site is wrong, the bar says 11g...).  Also, for 10 calories more, you can try out the Low Carb bar, which has more protein:

Seafood is usually pretty good, caloriewise. I personally love anything salmon related. Some obvious tips are to try to rub the sauces that are served on the fish, but put the excess sauces off of the fish. And try not to eat too many of those garlic cheese breads they bring. They may be delicious as hell, but I'm sure they're loaded. I also have a copy of "Eat This, Not That" that I got for free, and this is the stuff they suggest to eat (note that it's not necessarily the best stuff, just some better out of the whole menu stuff):

Live Maine Lobster (1.25 lb) w/ cocktail sauce and seasoned broccoli (288 cal, 3g fat, 29g carbs)
Garlic Grilled Jumbo Shrimp w/ lemon juice and a baked potato with pico de gallo (329 cal, 5g fat, 39g carb)
Broiled Flounder w/ lemon juice and a garden salad with red wine vinaigrette (344 cal, 10g fat, 15g carb)

Some suggestions it says is to request the baked potato you get to have a scoop of pico de gallo instead of butter and sour cream to save a few hundred calories, and to avoid the melted butter cups they give and to ask for a cocktail sauce or lemon instead (every fluid ounce, or those little cups that they come in, has 21g of fat apparently).

I'm sorry, but I don't have much help regarding your question.  But, which Kashi bar is harder to eat, in terms of it being hard and taking some good mouth muscles, the chewy bars or the crunchy bars?  I always hear something different...

Whey protein is extremely good protein, whoever told you to stick to natural stuff doesn't know what they're talking about.  Anyway, try different flavors if you don't like the vanilla you got.  I get chocolate and and sometimes drop in a tablespoon of peanut butter.  I've also tried vanilla, but it's not as bad as you make it sound... meh.

A lot of the stuff you hear on artificial sweeteners being bad is just false.  Read a few posts from this, it covers information of a few different sweeteners (by the way, Splenda is sucralose, not aspartame):

Use a food scale.

I used one, and found out that I wasn't getting the actual serving sometimes!  Sometimes less, and sometimes more (pretty bad when you're doing something like Kashi Golean Crunch).

People say the Original taste like cardboard, but I don't think it does.  Meh, people are spoiled with taste.  Crunch is the way to go if you really are picky about flavors, though.  And $4 a box?  There's always a special at either Kroger, Publix, or Wal-Mart where I live where it's two for $5 or something.

Don't dis the other Kashi stuff, either... I love hard to chew food :)

Stopped reading at the word "rats". Unless you are allergic to one of the ingrediants in sucralose, it won't do anything to you, mentally either.  Unless your mindset is "No calories?  I can eat anything I want!"

They're both 2.5 oz, so yeah.  Not the alternative bagel, the Perfect 10 one.

Well, I saw the Alternative bagels at Publix... but they were pretty small, and not worth it really.  Regarding the Perfect 10, they're only half an ounce heavier, but with all that protein, I don't think I'd care!  I'm going to go to Publix again soon and talk with them about ordering it in.  I'm sure they'd order it if they bring a  Western Bagel brand already, no?

I posted this in two other threads, but this is probably the ultimate low calorie breakfast to stay full for a long time:

2 servings of Fiber One Original (60g), 1 serving of Kashi GoLEAN Original (52g), 1 cup of skim milk.

You will be getting 38g of fiber, and 26g of protein in one bowl for 350 calories.

This morning, I mixed a bowl of Fiber One original and Kashi GOLEAN original with a cup of skim milk, since I saw that I had an excess of cereals.  Was 38g fiber, 26g protein, and 350 calories.  I had to actually force myself to eat lunch later.

I'll copy and paste something I wrote up a while ago of an example of what I ate in a particular week:

Sunday: Kashi GOLEAN Truly Vanilla Oatmeal, half a cup of Egg Beaters with Yolk, two slices of Nature's Own Light Bread toasted - 12g of fiber, 26g of protein
Monday: Cinnamin Raisin English Muffin, fat free cream cheese, Fiber One original with half a cup of skim milk - 29g of fiber, 12g of protein
Tuesday: Kashi GOLEAN Blueberry waffles with sugar free syrup, Special K Protein Plus with half a cup of skim milk - 11g of fiber, 22g of protein
Wednesday: Boca Breakfast Wrap, Light English Muffin (the one with 8g of fiber), fat free strawberry cream cheese - 14g of fiber, 23g of protein
Thursday: Kashi GOLEAN Truly Vanilla Oatmeal, Fiber One Honey Clusters with half a cup of skim milk - 21g of fiber, 16g of protein
Friday: Kashi GOLEAN Original with half a cup of skim milk, Cinnamin Raisin English Muffin, fat free cream cheese - 11g of fiber, 21g of protein
Saturday: Kashi GOLEAN Truly Vanilla Oatmeal, Kashi GOLEAN Crunch! with half a cup of skim milk - 15g of fiber, 22g of protein

I'll tell you calories for each day if you want, but the highest in one day was 380 calories (Saturday), and the lowest is 310 calories (Sunday).

This morning, I decided I need to finish up some cereals that I've had for a bit too long, so I decided to have a serving size of Fiber One Original and Kashi GOLEAN original with a cup of skim milk.  Ended up being 38g of fiber, 26g of protein, and 350 calories.

18 lb in four days would mostly be water weight, muscle, and maybe a little fat.  That, and probably it not even being true.  You shouldn't lose more than 2 lb a week.

I sometimes get Campbell's Chunky Savory Vegetable soup.  The whole can has 220 calories, and it's a lot of soup and really filling.  Has a good large bit of sodium, but I always stop by a gas station and get those gigantic 65 oz. cups and fill it up with water or diet coke or something.

I wouldn't eat the one you have.  Jell-O recently put out a 70 calorie per serving rice pudding, both a normal and a cinnamon version.  I've gotten the cinnamon version a few times as I loved rice pudding before I decided to lose fat, and it's really delicious.  I'd stay away from the one you have now, and just get the Jell-O brand one.  You won't regret it... Well, you shouldn't.

Well, I ate the Zone Perfect bar.  Was not entirely what I expected!  I was squeezing it in the store, and it was so hard, I thought it was exactly what I was looking for.  Nope.  It was very delicious though.  But 1g of fiber?  Not going to purchase again.  As I mentioned before though, it was pretty tasty.

I hope I can find the Kashi Roll thing tomorrow.  I only saw the Oatmeal and Walnut at Wal-Mart, but I'm more interested in the chocolate turtle.  I'll be looking for it!

Ok, I went to the store tonight and looked around.  They had a box of those Kashi Rolls, but there was only one left, and it looked sort of smashed up ('twas the oatmeal and walnut, but I think I'd like to try out that chocolate turtle one more...), so I got this other bar I felt that was pretty hard.  ZonePerfect or something... It's dark chocolate or something, and the wrapper is black.  Has 190 calories and 12g of protein, but only 1g of fiber (yeah, not liking that much either).  I'll be out tomorrow, and I'll look for that Kashi Roll.  I'll tell you guys how things go over the passed two days as to which I think was better.

By the way, does every place sell those Kashi Rolls?  I was at Wal Mart, and all I did see was the box for the oatmeal and walnut.  Then again, the Wal Mart is completely changing the whole store over this long process, so a lot of stuff is mixed up until they finish it, which won't be for two months.

Funny, I just made an example list of what I eat in a given week.  The stuff is all from serving size, except the Fiber One original, which I eat a cup of.

Foods Sucralose...in bread?! May 11 2008

Oh, you need to settle down.  You could eat 75 packets of sucralose every day and still not see any side effects, health wise.  Fear of artificial sweeteners is just laughable, really.

Anyway, bread needs a little sugar to help it cook, it's not to make it sweet.  Some brands do use HFCS, since it's cheap, but some take pride in not doing so.  I mean, if Nature's Own 40 calorie bread used sucralose instead, I'd take it over the HFCS it normally uses in a heat beat.

My doctor said there's not really a limit to fiber, unless you stomach starts to hurt.  I easily eat at least 45-50 grams of fiber a day.  Some days, I get around 70 grams if I eat a cup of Fiber One in the morning.
