Weight Loss Quit smoking for 4 months now and gained 10 pounds May 24 2008

Do I know where you are coming from. . . . . oh yeah!! I smoked my last cigarette on January 20th. I have gained about 12 pounds. I workout almost everyday. I am now watching my calories and I seem to be much less likely to reward myself with food, because I am not smoking. I can remember thinking. . . . . I can eat this, I'm not smoking and I can eat that because I'm not smoking. Well, now I haven't exactly grown out of my clothes, so that is making me happy. Of course this weekend will probably be a little harder. Drinking, motorcylces, the whole gammit.

Did you do Chantix. I did for two months, I don't care what they say, it is not a magical pill. It was hard and I don't think a day goes by that I don't think about the cigarette. I have convinced myself however, that I smoked for 34 years, so the craving isn't going away overnight. I do feel much better. When I think about what I have accomplished by quitting, it makes other things seem a much smaller hurdle. I thought that my breathing would be better by now, but I guess that will take some time too.

I'm still looking for normal. . . ..but I keep saying it is coming. I think.lol.

Weight Loss Question about cardio -- help! May 23 2008

Hi Folks,

I love my treadmill also. I use it in the winter months and if it is raining too hard outside in the morning. Now that it is spring, I walk outdoors. I love my walking and outside I get the natural hills, which I have this one hill, that I swear is out to kill me. But, boy when I make it to the top. . . . I know that I have accomplished something. I walk about 4 1/2 miles an hour, which isn't too bad for an old lady (48). lol. When I am indoors, I do the walk/Jog method. 1st 2 minutes 3.5, 3rd 4.0, 4th 4.5, 5th 5.0, 6th 5.5, then I drop back to 4.0 and start from there, I do this 4 times and then after the 6th (for the fourth time) I go up to 6.0, which is usually a full jog. I only do that for a minute and then I drop back down to 4.0 and cool down from there. I quit smoking alittle over 4 months ago and I am finding it so much easier to breathe, not that there is a great difference yet, but I'm getting there. I smoked for 34 years, so I have figured out that it's gonna take a little while to get my breathing back to normal.

Good Luck all.

Hi Everyone,

Whether we like it or not. . . . . the three day weekend is coming. I am in CT, so the weather is supposed to be beautiful all weekend long here too.  We have a motorcycle run on Sunday. That takes most of the day, so I'll be pretty safe that day. However, Saturday and Monday, I plan on just taking it one hour at a time. I am going to pace my drinks, and think about what I am doing when I start reaching for the food. We have the advantage of not having to worry about driving or anything, because we camp with a bunch of friends right there on the lawn. It is quite the secluded location, so we have no reason to go anywhere else.

Speaking of Boston, I'll be up your way next week Nursescarels. My daughter will be having her re-enlisting ceremony at Fenway Park on May 29th. She's in the Navy and that is where she decided that she wanted her ceremony. She has already been over to Iraq twice, but now on June 10th, her and my grandaughter and son-in-law will be moving to Italy for 3 years.  I guess I'll have to visit Italy on vacation next year. . . . woe is me!!!!! lol. It is going to be tough though and I'll be coming out here alot, cause it would be real easy to be wanting some comfort food. Oh well, that is another time.

Just remember we are the only ones who can control what we do. It is all about choices.  OURS!!!!

Hey, you are absolutely right, that will be this Sunday. Might skip the cheese too.  I have a motorcyle run this weekend and that doesn't allow too much leeway as far as eating healthy goes. We actually camp out at a friends for the whole weekend. I'm gonna take my vodka and some of that diet orange dry drink. No calories in the mixer, so that will help. I'm just gonna go and enjoy and watch where I can. Let's face it, when it really comes down to it, it is all about choices.

How did you do with the beer pairing dinner? Just remember, even if you just made one choice that was healthy, that is a step in the right direction. Also, keep in mind, even if you didn't do that great, you need to get right back to it today. Don't beat yourself up, just make some better choices today.

Hey Ladies, what does everyone have planned for the Holiday weekend? Usually these weekends send a chill up my spine when it comes to eating healthy, but I really do think I can do this.

ENJOY!!!!!

Hi Folks,

It's been a couple of days. Sounds like everyone is doing good. Keep up the good work. I've been down and out with a nasty earache. I forgot how much pain can be generated by some wax built up down inside your ear canal. Constant pain. I even got to the point where I was thinking to myself. . . . I would rather be giving birth, at least that pain comes and goes. . lol. I am almost back to normal today. Went for a ride on Sunday, I'm sure that didn't help my ear any. Wasn't hurting at that time.

I like my beer too. Because most bars don't carry my vodka, diet cranberry and fresca, I end up with Michelob Ultra, less calories and carbs. We did go out to lunch on Sunday, usually do when we are on the motorcyle, I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, but I did pass on the fries. Because of this group, I actually thought twice, which I usually don't do on a Sunday. This could be a really good thing.

I don't own a scale, but because I went to the doctors for my ear, I got weighed in. Not bad, it was actually better than I thought.  I have lost 5 lbs since my last weigh in, which was about 2 months after I quit smoking.

Keep up the good work.

Good Morning Everybody,

Rise and shine!!! Another new day!!!!

If you are referring to my Sunday off as being the cheaters diet, this is what it is. I do absolutely fantastic during the week and for the most part on Saturday too. But, on Sunday, that is the day that I get to spend the whole day with my husband. Whether we are out riding on the motorcycle or just staying home and working in the yard or house, I might have something that is not so good for you. But, it has to be something that you would have eaten before you changed your lifestyle. Wahla!!! Instant gratification, and I am set for the rest of the week. I don't go crazy or anything like that. I mean, I don't wake up and start bingeing. If and only if, something presents itself, something that I would not eat during the week, I'll go for it.

I wasn't aware that there was a name for it. I'm sure that I read it somewhere.

One thing that I have learned to do is not call what I'm doing a diet. I am 48 years old and I plan on eating the "healthy way" (basically the pyramid) for the rest of my life. This way when I do something really stupid, like eat something that I'm not supposed to be eating, and usually too much of it, getting back to normal is the healthy way, not " I have to get back on my diet".

For instance, when I quit smoking and I ate entirely too much, my thoughts weren't, oh no, I have to go on a diet again, instead I thought, ok that is enough, back to normal. This way normal is not the enemy.

Sorry, I'm probably running on and on. Hope it helps just one person change their way of thinking.

Hi Leila,

I find that around 7:30 every night, I allow myself a little snack, but if I go over 1500 during the day. . . . .I won't. If I don't have my snack, then all the better. I do drink my water thru out the day though, it is really an important part of my whole daily routine. One of my biggest downfalls, is the couple of drinks on Saturday night. I have however, switched from beer to vodka, fresca and diet cranberry. So I feel good about that. Sunday's are my day off, no matter what. I don't go crazy or anythin, but I will have something that is off limits if it shows itself. If I didn't, then none of this stuff would work for me. I was doing really good with the whole lifestyle change until I quit smoking. But I am very proud of myself for doing that.

Anybody else on board with the take one day off method?

Hi Ladies,

I am 48 years old, 5'10". I would like to lose about 20 lbs that I gained when I quit smoking 4 months ago. Well, actually I probably gained 15 lbs from that, but I would like to go the add'l 5 also. I am into the whole Harley, motorcycle riding thing with my husband, so I would like to be in better shape for all of those motorcycle rallies that we go to.

You are so right about the age thing. It is alot harder now to lose the weight than it was before. I like to exercise, I know that sounds little wierd, but I really do consider it my hobby. I am looking forward to getting, and maybe even getting, a little motivation out here. I am finding that I enjoy the site itself. I have found every item that I have been searching for so far as far as calories. The site says that I should be eating 1750 cals a day, however, I am going 1500, which will give me some room at the end of the day, which by the way, is my worst time. I hope to become part of your group here, I think that we will have more in common than I would with the 20 somethings or even 30 somethings.

Did we totally get away from lafoutloud01's question. You guys are talking pretty technical. If I was a beginner and never even heard of squats and lunges, you might be a little overwhelming.

Just a thought!!!

I hope I am doing this right?? I am just replying to the last entry. I smoked my last cigarette on January 20th, this year. Put on about 15 lbs. I am ready to get rid of that weight now. I started on Monday, eating healthy and exercising. Believe it or not, exercising is my hobby. I have tried downloading a picture, but something is going wrong. I am 5' 10 ", 48 years old. I am big into Harley's and riding, so I have to get in shape for all of the rallies that my husband and I go to. Looking for some motivation here. Really glad to see this site.

Hi,  I am a Newbie out here. Checking things out. I am trying to download a picture, however, it won't work for some reason. Anyway, be careful when you start your squats and lunges. I have to tell you I am pretty athletic and I powerwalk all of the time, however, I started doing lunges and squats and the first time out I was in so much pain in the next two days, I thought that I would never be normal again. Obviously I did too much and I was holding 8 lb weights when I was doing them. So start out very slow, with limited (maybe none to start) added weight and not too many reps.

Hope this helps alittle.
