The Lounge What is the American Stereotype? May 11 2008

I'm not trying to be better than anyone else. I was stating my opinion. I think the stereotype of this country sucks and everyone here should work to change it because it's embarrassing. But it's true, not everyone is the American stereotype.

And I also agree that you are often judged as an idividual when you travel. Not always, but ya.

Think what you want. I am not an American stereotype, but you can believe it if you wish. I'm just trying to explain my point of view.

And just because I was born here doesn't mean I haven't done my fair share of travelling and again, just because I was born here doesn't mean I live here.

I live in Britain and to be honest Americans do get lugged with the stereotype of being fat or overweight. In my geography lesson once, we were talking about how the world's wealth and food was spread out and we were looking at some facts and one of them was, '1/3 of Americans are overweight' and some boy went, "how old are these facts? Oh, it's probably about three-thirds now." I went to visit Florida in the Summer, I did notice proportions were quite big and a lot food was odd processed stuff. There will always be fatty fast food places of course but its not like other countries (like Britain) aren't catching up weight-wise. My dad, when we were in Florida, kept remarking that there were quite a few large people too. He's overweight himself and even said he felt better because there were other larger people than him. It wasn't like everywhere you looked there was somebody dangerously obese but there was a few more than you'd normally see.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Americans are bigger than Brits. In fact, Britain is very much like the United States in terms of wait. Recently, in various articles Britain has been blaming the U.S. for their weight problem. Why...? IT's not the U.S.'s fault that you decided to go to McDonald's too much.

Oh, and French people - known for being thin right? This TV show probably just played off their own stereotype.

Also, this show sounds amusing, even if it does make fun, because many Americans are disgustingly overweight. I am always surprised by this too because where I go to school, everyone is very thin and athletic and when I watch TV or go back home, I know why there is such a stereotype for The U.S. I am from the U.S. and that would be the stereotype I would give-- fat, obnoxious, lazy, LOUD, rude-- I don't want to rip on my own country, but that stereotype seems to be pretty true from what I've seen and if people in other countries have noticed it too, which they have, then that is just embarrassing and lots of people here have to start chaning how they act and live. Stop embarrassing yourselves and your country. (my bit of advice)

The Lounge ANTM: Whitney, plus-size model???? HUH??????????? May 11 2008

I think Whitney is ugly because of her personality.

I disagree with you here. I think she seems like one of the more normal girls personaltiy-wise.

No one else seems to like Anya. Whyyy? I think she's totally adorable!I think Anya is the best. She has the most natural talent. I'm glad Dominique is gone. Like Miss J. kept saying... she looked like a drag queen.

The only thing I don't like about Anya is her weird accent. It is NOT Hawaiian. It's Russian-y so either she was born in Russia and moved to Hawaii when she was a kid or her parents are Russian, because that is definitely not a Hawaiian accent. Look at her appearance and name too. She definitely comes from Russia or somewhere around it.

And like someone else said... plus size runway modeling is size 8-12. Sorry... it's just how it is. I personally wouldn't want to see a size 20 girl doing runway... and I'm a bigger girl myself.

Agreed. I think people who are too big, like a size 20, shouldn't actually be that size. I think in those cases they need to get in shape, however, I still have a problem with the fact that they still only take normal small models or big models and none really inbetween.

First of all, runway models for non-plus-size modelling shows have to be either a size 2 or 4. Size 0 models are no longer allowed on the runways because the fashion industry is now making an effort to reduce the number of eating disorders of the world. Size 0 models look and usually are too sickly to walk the runways. In the show, when the woman said that she usually only hires size 2 girls, she wasn't being mean, but stating a fact. Many designers only hire girls of that size and Whitney, unfortunately is too big for most designers. However, I agree that she is also too small to be a plus-size model. She has a terrific figure which I think is too fit and not curvy/busty enough to be on a plus-size runway. And here is where I have a problem. I am sort of in Whitney's situation. I am 5'11'' and a size 10. I would LOVE to be a size 4, but sadly, my bone structure will never allow that. But still, I love fashion and would kill to walk the runways. I think I would be great and look great (not to sound like I'm praising myself, just maybe upping my confidence), but I am too big to be a regular runway walker and too small to be a plus size model. I am not curvy and not busty. I guess I look sort of like a regular model if you grabbed her hips and stretched her out a few inches. And that sucks!! The industry has to get in the game and get some in the middle models, because no matter how much I would love to be a size 4, it's not gonna happen. I might be able to make a size 6 if I worked at it enough, but I'd have to get off my butt haha.
