Young Calorie Counters What do I do with my daughter's binge eating? Jun 11 2008

To be honest I don't think taking junk away from your kids would be punishing them. In the long run it'd be benefiting them and you and your wife. I think that junk food occasionally would be an alright thing but I don't believe it would be the best after dinner snack, and of course kids are kids and are extremely picky (you should see my brother!!) but kids don't get accustom to "healthy" foods until they've tried them and had them a couple times. Once a kid grows onto a food they start to like it more. (:

I personally would not want to treat myself to junk food, and I'd appreciate it if my mother stopped buying it so often. I also know that little kids or even teenagers (heck, even some adults..) don't really care about calories, serving sizes, trans fat, saturated fat. I don't believe kids should really care (but parents should) or become obsessed with it or anything - but those things are very important to take note of, even in younger kids. I'd rather have a healthy kid who doesn't eat so much snacks and candy bars and grow up to be a healthy adult than to have a kid who does snack and eat candy bars to grow up to be a fat adult who has health problems. And I'm definitely not saying you're giving your kids junk or that they are going to grow up to be fat, I don't mean that at all, I'm just saying I don't think junky foods are good for kids, and obviously they aren't.

I applaud the fact that you're seeking help, I think it was the best decision. Also, I hope I'm not sounding rude, as I said, I'm just giving you my personal opinion, it doesn't have to take any affect on you. (: I also think that taking the junk and locking them up was a good idea. =]

I really like hula hoops that have sand or water in them. (:

They are heavier so that might be good. Also, I love the sound they make. Hahaha. It's entertaining.

Hm, that is rather odd. She may be depressed and be looking at food for comfort.

When I got depressed I used to eat my problems away. I think that you guys should comfort her if you're not, and if you are then try to do it more.

If you are trying to lose weight as well, maybe you should all (or just you two) go out on a walk every day together for 30 minutes or so. It's a good time to get to know each other a bit more. You can't really expect her to start pouring things out on the first time. I am not sure how she is but when I get depressed it takes me a long time to budge out the truth.

She could be like how I was and just eating because she likes to eat, however sometimes emotions have a lot to do with it.

I'd still try to revamp the food that goes into the house and if you aren't already go on walks and talk. Or you and your family can have family nights where you all just get together and bond. That may make her feel comforted and really at home.

Also, let her know that portions are a huge thing. If she wants some turkey jerky then tell her to just ask you for some, but she really needs to pay attention to portions. And that may not be a huge deal for her now, because when I was 13 I couldn't have cared less, but now that I've grown up and I'm overweight I definitely care!

I see that if you are adopting her (which is really kind of you, by the way.) you probably don't want her to start to dislike you (obviously) but you have to talk to her about weight sometime because as a teenager weight is a huge thing in school and everyday life and weight can really mess with a young girl or anyone's life and it can make them feel lower than low.

If you are seeing that she is depressed give her fruits and vegetables because they really help me when I'm depressed. Green tea also helps. So does exercising and by that I don't mean yell, "DROP AND GIVE ME TWENTY!" but like I said, you can go on walks, or play a game of kickball with the family or something... anything! Maybe you can get her into yoga, it may sound silly but it's extremely calming and anyone can do it. They have yoga videos for six to ten year olds, so 13 year olds can do it for sure.

Just be there for her, do the right things with her and the family and you'll probably see an improvement. =]

[/edit] Oh, dancing is also really really fun to do! Maybe you can all dance together. =] Or of course, being a teenager I know a lot of teenage girls that love to dance like no one is watching and just let loose. I saw an exercise on TV where you get a blind fold on everyone and you all just "dance like no one is watching" and it's really fun. Obviously, don't do it in a crowded room where someone is going to break something, but in a nice open space, maybe in your yard or something?

I attempt to eat 1,440 however I usually end up eating around 1,660. (That's to lose.)

Obviously I haven't gotten to maintain yet. xD Aha.

I don't think I am messing up my body though, I have lost 6 pounds so far. I hope this is working. o.O

I'd definitely tell you to stop t buying things like that. Not saying that food like that is so bad if you eat it in moderation but I am 164 pounds (I was 174) and I did the exact same thing. I ate tons of junk that my mom bought for the whole family (7 people) and I ate it all. I gained a large amount of weight in a short period of time and I regret it all. I'm only overweight because I binged like your daughter is.

I really think that I would be a ton smaller if my mom didn't buy all the junk food, I'm not saying that it's her fault I'm fat, it's mine for sure, but I couldn't control myself.

Maybe buy healthier snacks that still taste good? I always ask my mom why she didn't stop buying the food after she saw I was taking it. Don't buy junk food like that, buy healthy things.

After I stopped eating like that (I was about six when I started eating like that, I'm seventeen now...) and I started eating fruit and such things like chips and cookies sound really gross.

I'm only trying to help, I hope I don't sound rude or anything, but like I said I regret it so much and now I'm working at my hardest to get rid of this extra weight. I don't want your daughter, or anyone else feeling the way I did/do.

[/edit]I have a small frame and I used to be really small (really really small and active) until I started eating like that, I strongly suggest you get low-fat granola bars, fruits, vegetables, if you buy pudding try buying low-cal jello instead... things like that. (:

[/edit] Yeah, I think you should talk to her about it also. I think the reason my binging got out of control is because my parents got divorced (I'm not blaming that either) but after my dad left I totally felt like I was in control of my own life (at six years old!) because my dad was like the main control center in the house, if he caught me eating like that I would have been in a LOT of trouble. I didn't care about my body image at all either, all I cared about was how the food tasted and how yummy it was. My mom warned me that if I kept eating like that then I'd regret it but I didn't care. Simple as that. I really wish that I did though, it really ruined my middle school years and such. I basically always feel ugly and fat and I constantly try to hide my weight. It's rather upsetting.

I think I'm done now (lol) I hope I helped!

I'm not exactly sure what you're saying that you do, but I definitely freak out if I log my calories and it says it was.... like, 400, I get worried that it's really like 500 or something.

I don't know... I didn't help whatsoever but if that's what you mean then you're not alone. Haha.

Health & Support If I binge one more time I swear...! Jun 09 2008

Yeah. Just to let you all know I don't eat french toast and chips daily. xD

I usually do not eat meat either that includes eggs. I also usually just drink flavored water and green tea, however I ran out and my mom buys my food. =] Hahaha.

Also, about eating at regular times, the day I posted this I was at the beach and I didn't know what time it was and all we had was junk (besides the grapes.) My mom knows that I don't eat chips on a regular basis and if I do eat chips they are usually organic blue corn tortilla chips but she just so happened to buy greasy, salty ruffle ones and I hate those but it was all we had and I was really hungry. D:

About my other binges though, I do eat at regular times, but at the end of the day I just pig out. At the worst time of day too! At like, 9:00 I'll start shoving gross food in my mouth, and I don't know why.

I am getting it under control and tomorrow I get to start swimming.

Thanks for all your helpful replies, tips and advice. =]

I am thinking about a lot of different alternatives to the sugary crap we have in my house, because my brother (he's 10) has really good metabolism (I'm very jealous), so we have a bunch of snack foods that someone his age would like and apparently I do too.

I have a little plan layed out for myself, I hope it works!

But again, thanks everyone, you all gave me really good ideas. =]

Bigmommah I applaud you. Anything is better than nothing.

I use dumbbells too sometimes - I also have 10 pound weights, but I think that if you are using dumbbells than that's totally cool, even if they are pink! I have green dumbbells and I use them when I dance. =]

I can hold both 10 pound weights in one hand and I can do a few reps with them.

Just because you can't lift 100 pounds over your head doesn't make you lame or anything, so disregard what people are saying. My guy friend who is older than me can't even lift my 10 pound weight and my mother could probably lift a 50 pound weight. Everyone gets stronger at different rates. Just because one person can lift 5 times as much as you doesn't make them better, just means they've been doing it longer or something. Y'know?

Kudos on losing 34 pounds too. That's amazing!

Sure if you want mega serious results you would have to kick up the weight a bit but if 10 pounds is all you can do as of right now then continue doing that until you are ready to move on.

And before anyone wants to say I'm opposed to the idea of using heavier weight I'm not saying that - I know that using just dumbbells isn't going to do much for long but if she does prefer to use them then I think it's okay.

If I were you though, I would eventually move on to something heavier, which it sounds like you may have been planning on it considering you went from 2 to 10. =] Congrats.

And I know that wasn't necessarily your point, so I'll stop talking about that, all I meant to say in this post was that if people are getting in your face about not doing it right or telling you to "get serious" then just ignore them until you are ready to lift heavier. =] You're doing great so far anyway. (:

Haha. Got one.

Drowning Lessons - My Chemical Romance

It's a great song but not for a wedding!

Without a sound I took her down
and dressed in red and blue I squeezed
Imaginary wedding gown
That you can't wear in front of me
A kiss goodbye, your twisted shell
As rice grains and roses fall at your feet
Lets say goodbye, the hundredth time
And then tomorrow we'll do it again
Tomorrow we'll do it again

I dragged her down I put her out
And back there I left her where no one could see
And lifeless cold into this well
I stared as this moment was held for me
A kiss goodbye, your twisted shell
As rice grains and roses fall at your feet
Let's say goodbye, the hundredth time
And then tomorrow we'll do it again

I never thought it'd be this way
Just me and you, we're here alone
And if you stay, all I'm asking for is
A thousand bodies piled up
I never thought would be enough
To show you just what I've been thinking

And I'll keep on making more
Just to prove that I adore
Every inch of sanity
All I'm asking for is, all I'm asking for is

C'mon

These hands stained red
From the times that I've killed you and then
We can wash down this engagement ring
With poison and kerosene
We'll laugh as we die
And we'll celebrate the end of things
With cheap champagne

Without, without a sound [x2]
And I wish you away

:D Thanks! So, CC basically takes the calories you burn and adds it to your burn meter but subtracts what you burn hourly from what you burnt during that hour. xD

Haha, that's confusing but pretty rad. But it makes it accurate. (:

Thanks everyone. I've decided to keep it at sedentary and just log what I do, it's easier anyway. ;)

Weight Loss special K diet Jun 03 2008
03:22 (UTC)

I was going to do this a few weeks ago. I thought, "OMG! 6 pounds in 2 weeks?" Eventually it got rather boring and kind of disgusting. I love Special K but I don't like eating it all the time.

But I mean - come on. Of course you are going to lose weight eating basically just cereal for 2 weeks.

I'm pretty sure it's just a trick to sell more Special K products.

If I were you, I wouldn't do it, simply because eating just cereal and one balanced meal isn't really good for you. It may seem like a quick way to lose weight, but depending on how many calories you should be eating and how many you'll be eating with just cereal and one balanced meal, you might end up losing weight and gaining it right back. That has also happened to me. T_T

Whatever you chose to do, good luck. (:

jeren: Yeah, I'm glad to know I'm not alone either.

alkcollowen: Thanks so much! I know, I always tell everyone on here who says they mess up that the past is past and you cannot change it. I still feel rather guilty though. I took an hour walk to try to put it past me, even though an hour isn't much. And I know I won't gain weight on just 1,800 calories but it still sucks because I usually have a 1,000 deficit so I feel like I failed for a day if I have less than that. I have only done this today and yesterday. Yesterday I probably had 1,800 as well. Thanks a lot for your advice, it really helped. (: And haha, that's funny. I know that most people won't think "Ha, look at that fatty." but when I walk I feel like people are looking at me and I don't know. I don't look at people like that, but some people are different. Y'know? And it's really weird because I may never see those people ever again, but it still irritates me. All the people I do live by are mostly my friends, but it's still feels weird. Usually when I see a heavy person walking or trying to be fit I applaud them for trying instead of just sitting on the couch eating chips. Mhm. xD

im_a_cc: I feel huge as well. I feel a little better after the walk I took, but y'know, I guess as we really can do is just forget about it and try to make up for it. And whatever we do, we just can't let it ruin our diet. Last year when I binged I felt like it was the end of the world and it threw me off completely. Ha.

narfblast: Thanks for the advice. =] That's a really good idea! I am not too fond of carrots but it's a lot better than eating chips or something, I'll try it.

Thanks everyone! =D

I honestly feel really guilty, but I tell myself, everyone makes mistakes sometimes. I am human and there is really no point dwelling on the past because it's over. I can't take it back. I just workout a little extra to burn as much of whatever it was off, or if I am still under my target calorie intake I just don't eat what I normally would in order to stay as close to my target as possible.

Weight Loss I didn't eat enough today... no appetite? Help? Jun 01 2008
14:23 (UTC)

Yeah - thanks for the tips, guys.

The weird thing is when I don't have an apetite (it only happens when I get depressed) I cannot get anything down my throat. I even tried drinking water and it didn't want to go down. =/ I was just feeling really really sick to my stomach. This really doesn't happen often at all for me though. Like I said, only when I'm depressed. Other than that I'm usually always hungry. xD Hahaha.

I try to eat things like peanuts or things high in calories when I get like that, but it's rather difficult to swallow it.

I've been doing really good lately, though. My calorie goal is 1,440 and yesterday I had 1,438. =D
