that book is awesome. the cookbook is awesome. read it. and if you can't handle the language try growing up a little.

Well, I'm 41 years young, and quite grown up. Some folks do not appreciate foul language, and I'm one of those people. I do think it's possible for one to express themselves without the use of it. I have no intent to debate this, just sharing this from a grown up's point of view.

I finally bought this on audio book. Sorry, but I did not enjoy being called "****" and listening to the cussing. It totally turned me off to whatever their message is. Maybe I can try to listen again but I just don't know.

Weight Loss The emotions of weight loss May 14 2009
11:04 (UTC)
37

I haven't been to Calorie Count in nearly a year. I hit a brick wall. Some family problems surfaced, and I went back into emotional eating and re-gained my weight loss plus 10 more lbs.

I know why I eat. I know what triggers it, yet I find myself succumbing to it anyway. I went to counseling to work on issues, but I found that I ate more, the more the therapist wanted me to delve into emotions.

I'm tired of being 300 pounds.

I'm tired of carrying this weight around on my bones.

I'm tired of being unable to sleep because I'm too heavy to lay down in bed without hurting in my legs. My legs actually go numb. Unbelievable.

I'm tired of feeling ashamed when I'm out with my husband. He loves me as I am. It's *me* who feels not good enough.

I'm tired of people staring at me.

Tired of wearing big clothes, that are uncomfortable and ugly out of a woman within catalog, because I can't afford big stylish clothing.

I'm tired of crying because I don't like how I feel or look.

The weight is ruining the best years of my life.

I'm trying so hard to mentally get back on track with this.

I tried to get back into CC a week ago on my own, and totally blew it after two days.

Something has to change. I'm reaching out and grabbing on because I'm really afraid I won't live to see my daughter grow up.

I can't breathe well. I can barely go up and down stairs. My shoes don't fit my feet. My ankles swell, which is extremely embarassing.

It just has to change, and I don't know how to do it.

Weight Loss It's so EXPENSIVE to eat healthy. Mac n cheese - $0.99, blueberries - $5.99 Jul 25 2008

Sometimes it does get a bit high. I watch closely for sales on the things I use. Some weeks I must substitute or just not have it, depending on bills etc.

I tend to look at it this way:

I can pay out the money for a healthy diet now, or pay out more money later for all of the health problems I'm going to have to deal with if I do not lose the weight.

Good luck to you, hang in there.

Weight Loss Does anyone eat Lean Cuisines? Jul 18 2008

Definitely. But I wait for the sale prices.  When I ring out at the register, my conveyor belt is simply full of Lean Cuisines.  It's almost embarrassing.  But the results can't be ignored.  They are fabulous for portion control meals for those that can't or don't want to take the time to prepare home made small portioned meals.

I was going to the same little grocer to buy mine every time. And my belt was filled up with them too! LOL I was going in so often someone commented they noticed I had lost a little weight. Either they were just being kind or really noticed :)

Additionally, I think the lean cuisines were great for teaching me about portion control, while getting used to counting calories and reading labels.

When you are ready to cook more for yourself, which will be much healthier....

I suggest getting you a good pyrex measuring cup, measuring spoons, and maybe a scale if you really want to weigh ounces. In doing this I have a better idea on my portions. Also this site helps me out. It's free to use the search part of it. I look alot of my things up on it

I have a problem eating which is probably why i'm overweight. I would just like to get some opinions on whether anyone thinks its ok to eat lean cusines? I would obviously watch the sodium intake on them. But otherwise do you think they would help me achieve my weight loss goal? I'm trying to lose weight and eat healthy at the same time. Thanks!

I lost my first 18 pounds eating lean cuisines. Sometimes for lunch and dinner. But as I went along, I noticed more puffiness in my face, hands, and feet. So I cut down on them and have them for lunch around 3 times per week and drink extra water when I have one. I keep them around in case something comes up where I need to eat and go, or I get a craving for take aways.

I did take this entire week off from lean cuisines, batch cooked a bunch of chicken breasts and have made most of my meals from them. It works out really well. I hate to cook, I really do. I do not like having to prepare my own food, but I'm doing it, and actually enjoyed it this week.

Good luck to you!!

Weight Loss Calorie Cycling question Jul 18 2008
02:35 (UTC)

Cycling my calories definitely helped me break my plateau. But before I started off, I took a free day and ate around 3000 calories.

Here's how mine looks:

Mon 1500
Tues 1900
Wed 1500
Thu  2000
Fri    1500
Sat   1500
Sun  2400

To be honest, I have gone over a little here and there. I stopped being completely rigid and when I did, I started to lose. I lost 3 pounds this week just cycling the calories and exercising on my higher calorie days.

I don't expect to keep losing at this rate, it will probably slow down again, as it did when I first started back in May.

I hope this helps you. Here's a site that I enjoy reading in regards to calorie cycling: http://www.j3nn.net/

Weight Loss How many tries did it take you till you were fully committed to a healthier lifestyle? Jul 17 2008

Many!!

It all began when I was 20 years old. I 'm 40 now, and yes it took me all this time for it to really click.

In my twenties I never lost weight, despite weight watchers, slim fast, atkins...

It wasn't until I was 34 years old that I dropped 80 pounds because I had to go on a low fat diet for gallbladder problems. The weight really fell off quickly.

But once I went right back to how I was eating, and a pregnancy, the weight came back on + more. More than I had ever weighed in my life.

Depression this time was a main factor in my weight issues. I see my extra weight as emotional pain I have physically manifested. Once I started dealing with issues I began exercising. When I started to exercise I started caring about what I was eating. It pretty much got the ball rolling this time.

The weight is coming off slowly though.

Weight Loss Broke and dieting - not fun! Jul 14 2008

My husband and I are right there as well. Dealing with finances and keeping to a healthy diet.

Here's what I got at the store this morning, on a tight budget:

2 small bags boneless skinless chicken

2 packages of wraps

Tomatoes - vine ripened (always seem to be cheapest)

head of lettuce

large tub - light and fit yogurt ( on sale)

box of oatmeal - not the ready made kind

skim milk

low fat swiss

4 cans light progresso soup

1 whole grain wheat bread

low/fat reduced peanut butter

I gotta make this stretch to friday

doing alot wraps, salads with chicken, a bit of brown rice

I hope this helps a little

When we are having a tough week and can barely afford chicken, I get one bag and alot of lettuce and other veggies. I get the lighthouse ranch dressing or caeser to drizzle lightly on. We just do alot of salads with shredded bits of chicken. I also cook up a bit of brown rice and shred chicken in it. I just stretch everything on those weeks. Good luck to you.

Thank you everyone, for your responses!

I'm batch cooking today, in order to have things more on hand and I will try to set a menu up. Each of you said something that was pretty much on target. Counting keeps me in line. If I'm not doing it, a dairy queen moolatta will derail me like nothing else.

In case someone reads this I wanted to share how I broke my plateau:

I went to calorie shifting 1772 calories per day alternating low days at around 1500 up to my highest of 2400.

I also increased my walking. I took two days out of the week and did one hour of walking in the morning and an hour in the evening (on the treadmill).

Thanks all :)

Weight Loss A post I read a few weeks ago destroyed my motivation. Jul 11 2008

I saw this article in Allure magazine, a couple of months back, I believe. Claiming that the majority of weight loss came from diet, and that exercise was more important in the maintenence phase.

I have to disagree with the article because exercise is what has lifted my mood, improved my ability to walk further without collapsing in exhaustion, strengthen my core, my legs etc. Simply changing what I eat might help me lose weight, but my hips and legs are not smaller and more toned for it. I attribute alot of this to my exercise.

And, before I even started to change what I eat, I started off with exercise. Alot of people claim that they started off this way, which led to healthier changes in food choices. :)

I too have had success with upping calories.

I'm calorie cycling around 1500 - 2400 calories per day. Walking 3 - 4 times per week.

I'm also experimenting. I noticed that so far this week I was able to overcome my plateau just but eating more.

Good luck dear ones. :)

I bought the book. I couldn't tolerate the diet as it made me ill. So then a year ago I tried yayfood, I didn't like the fact that *after* I paid the membership fee to sign up to get into the forum and read material, I find out it was everything I had already read before about calorie shifting. There wasn't anything new or ground breaking about it. There were hundreds of people signed up on the site but no one hardly posting. Oh and I never saw my money back when I cancelled the next week. I do tire of getting ripped off by people. This is why I refuse to every buy a membership again for anything. CC is free and I'm seeing results.

Foods Views on fast food? Jul 10 2008

I worked for Burger King and Taco Bell years ago. I saw some really gross things that make me want to avoid fast food. At burger king, the manager once told me not to change out the grease after an employee told me the same grease had been in the fryer for two days. It was just covered and reused. Think about what goes in this: the chicken, fish, and fries.

At Taco bell, I quit after one week, when the large pot that cooks the refried beans was filthy. I went in to work the lunch rush and the pot had encrusted beans and it was horribly nasty. The rim of the pot had something else caked on the top of it.

The taco bell I worked for was not that clean. I'm not saying all taco bells are filthy, but you just never know.

Sometimes I do grab a side salad or a chicken sandwich if I'm on the run from BK, but I really try to plan ahead.

I like all veggies, lean meats, and whole grains.  I couldn't live without coffee, unsweet tea, Diet Mountain Dew, and yes, artificial sweeteners.

I don't like yogurt and rice cakes.

I sure can't take in a rice cake. It's like eating particle board. Not that I have ever ate particle board but I imagine that's how it is lol

Lately:

whole wheat garlic and herb wraps

with 1/2 a chicken breast shredded up

a slice of provolone

a light sprinkle of real turkey bacon bits on top

heat up

then drizzle a bit of Bolthouse yogurt dressing - ranch flavor

I also like carmel fiber one bars, oatmeal with blueberries, healthy choice steamers, progresso soups, weight watchers chocolate ice cream with chocolate cookie crumbles on it ( to curb my crazy choco craving, this works!), fiber one cereal, grilled chicken with anything, green beans mixed with my salads. I have also learned to love whole grain bread. A year ago, no one could ever get me to eat it lol

Oh one more biggie..... raisin bread!!! Love toasted raisin bread with a spritz of butter. mmm

Foods I have the absolute WORST craving.... What is your weakness? Jul 09 2008
23:27 (UTC)

Glazed donuts. My store around the corner puts them out fresh and hot around 6 - 7 am, and another batch around 6 pm. And they place them right in the front of the entrance so that you can see and smell them. To make matters worse, they also set up a little ice cooler plum full of chocolate milk. My other weakness :)

I have had to avoid going to that particular store during these times.

I'll reserve my rant about how I think grocery stores need to stop putting these types of things right up front as customers walk in. Why not offer healthier choices instead?

Foods oatmeal Jul 09 2008

I like old fashioned oatmeal as well. I buy a mixed bag of frozen organic berries and I mix a 1/2 cup into my oatmeal. Sometimes I lightly drizzle a bit of honey on top but not too much. I experiment with nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla flavoring etc.

Weight Loss Weight Loss Info and Tips (i lost 120lbs this way and thought i'd share the info) Jul 09 2008

Congratulations on your weight loss! And thank you for sharing your helpful tips.

I really need to stop drinking so much diet soda. I feel that I am addicted after all of these years. I can drink around 6 cans a day! I do drink water in between, but it's not enough.

I attempted to stop the diet soda and a few days later I had the most incredible headaches, ears ringing, the shakes, and my mood.... oh boy. I was not a joy to be around.

I'm trying to drink two large glasses of ice water for each soda I have.

I have tried Crystal Lite, and I have no idea why but crystal lite causes me to get UTI infections. Now one would think that soda of all things could cause this.

I agree with Clharr. My weight loss came to a standstill when I lowered my calories. When I upped them I lost a few pounds within days. I've decided now to go along with my BMR calculations and calorie cycle. I'll report whether or not it's working.

I don't mean to poo poo the idea of lowering calories. To each their own, and whatever works for you.

Weight Loss Only 4 LBS lost last month... what am I doing wrong??? Jul 09 2008

I kept hovering around the same numbers through June. I believe I found out why.

After losing very well in May, I got overly ambitious and dropped my calories to 1500 per day.

Obviously this was not enough for me because I stopped losing, even though I increased my exercise.

I had a few days where I upped my calories recently and as of today, I have shook 3 lbs loose.

I've re-worked my calorie intake to where I'm calorie cycling, and having some high days and low days off and on, instead of a flat 1500 - 1700 per day. I was staying really too low after looking back on my journal.

Maybe taking a free day, then getting back on can help give the metabolism a jolt.

Weight Loss A Big Girl no more...what I won't miss. Have any to share? Jul 06 2008
11:43 (UTC)
5

Things I don't miss now, just going down from 311 lbs to 294 lbs :

1. Not being able to sit in a movie theater seat.

Last two movies I sat through comfortably without the sides of the seat digging into my thighs and bruising them.

2. Not being able to sit in a booth at a cafe.

3. I don't miss the horrible low back pain, the pain in my knees (yes it's already getting better!) and the foot pains.

I was to the point of taking up to 10 or 15 advil per day because of pain in my knees. Now I'm down to taking only 4 before bed time, because I do still have achey legs.

Things I won't miss once I lose more weight:

1. People talk about young boys or teenage boys? Try some teen girls. I was walking down the grocery aisle back in May when I began this journey, and one of them said behind me "She needs a separate aisle for her ass" and they snickered. I wanted to cry. I won't get tired of little stares, comments, or laughter.

2. The anxiety I feel when going to a mall. I went clothes shopping with my tax rebate and left the mall in tears. Yep. I felt like a neurotic mess. I was so hoping my bit of weight loss would yeild the chance the fit into some new clothes but no dice. I will be happy when the day comes that I can walk into that mall and go to any store I like and pick out something I want.

I won't miss having to spend extra money at Lane Bryant or Woman Within. I won't miss having people stare at me when I walk into a Lane Bryant either, which has happened on occasion.

3. When I can wear a sexy bra and look good in it. My bra looks like my grandmas. And it's from Lane Bryant. This isn't sexy, it's a huge mess of elastic and discomfort.

4. When I can get into the car without feeling the wheel press against my belly. It's slowly starting to change, but I'll be glad for the extra roominess I will encounter later on.

5. To stop hiding from family. I don't feel comfortable anymore around anyone, especially my mum in law. She lost 120 pounds with WW and constantly brags about it. I don't mind that she brags because I will brag too, but she's also become extremely judgemental of fat people even though she was fat all of her life. I feel fearful of being underneath all her scrutiny. Her new MO is "If I can lose weight anyone can, and if they're not doing it they are ugly fat cows in my eyes". So I tend to feign sickness ALOT just to get away from her.

6. To stop hiding from my husband. We haven't been intimate in a long, long time. He wants to, and he's always trying....but I just can't.

7. To soak in a nice hot bath tub with candles again. I used to do this all of the time, and I haven't in years. I can't take a bath because I can't get up and out of the bloody bath tub. I certainly won't call on my husband to come get me either.

8. Shoes. I have bought alot of shoes years ago that I simply adore and cannot wear. So they sit and wait for me until my feet can slip into them again.

9. Edema. I won't miss swollen feet, cankles, or swollen puffy ankles from having too much sodium or a super hot day. The edema is improving with what little I have lost so far, but I still get puffer feet and I try to hide them beneath long skirts. Forget wearing cute sandals. I'm hiding them in crocs. I hate crocs!

10. I won't miss having to tell my daughter, "Mummy is too tired and doesn't feel good" when she wants me to take her outside to run around or go somewhere for a long walk. I won't miss that sad confused look on her face either.

I knew i was forgetting something!

I tend to walk anywhere from 35 - 60 min 3 - 5 times per week. I usually burn 180 calories if I get a mile in.

I walk slower because I have a heart condition. Doctor will not let me get too strenuous.

I have been doing a little strength training 2 x a week using light weights with my arms.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Unfortunately I cannot afford a bodybugg at this time. I still have no idea what caloric intake i need to lose weight and that is frustrating.

I have went here http://www.phord.com/cc/ and it's actually telling me to consume under 1500 calories. I don't think I can do that without feeling sick.

The strangest thing though, after having a couple of days where I ate more, I dropped down 2 pounds today.

I don't get it!! Argh.

Thank you Korali!

Either I'm really stupid and /or tired, but I cannot understand how many calories I should be taking in. I've been using the harris benedict formula.

I walk about a mile and burn 180 calories 3 times per week.

Other than this I'm sedentary /computer work.

Liza, thank you for your input too. I have been tracking my measurements and beginning of May my hips were 59 1/2 inches. They are 55 inches today. And have been at 55 inches since the first week of June.

Someone please help me. Anyone?

Start: 311lbs

Now: 292-294 lbs (staying there for a month and a week now)

What am I doing wrong? I started off great, cycling calories.

Over the span of a month and a week, the numbers won't move down.

I have tried, increasing exercise/decreasing exercise. Upping calories, lowering calories. Increasing water, watching sodium, changing my foods. Taking a day off, not taking a day off.

I'm really getting frustrated.

I'm averaging around 1600- 1900 per day.

My BMR is 2025. If I'm supposed to subtract 500 from that, then my daily intake should be 1525 in order to lose weight, correct?

I really want this. I HAVE to lose this weight. I nearly gave up last night.

I posted on spark people but no one is answering me.

I feel desperate today. I don't know why. Anyone....anything.

Thank you so much in advance.

P.S. I know that I do not have a thyroid problem because my thyroid panel came back normal in May 2008.

In my experience, too much fruit at once makes me bloat. You could try cutting down on how much fruit at once. As other's mentioned it could be intolerance to the bread you are taking in.
