Weight Loss Help!? Month and a half and nothing. Nov 21 2009

I think it possible that you are eating too little. double check that this is not below your BMR.

YOu should also look at the composition of what you are eating - when you eat as little as that your metabolism slows down so you need to combat that with good fats which boost the metabolism. You also need to make sure you are getting enough protein.

You could try calorie cycling as well, ie eat 1300 then 1500 then 1700 then 1300 then 1500 etc. This also keeps your metabolism going!

Not enough fat, not enough protein, not enough food!

Check that you're eating enough! Especially you need to eat a lot of good fats (butterfat, fat from coconuts, avocados, nuts, olive oil) this helps combat metabolic slowdown during weight loss and keeps you feeling full.

Things with high glycemic indices like fried potato are not going to keep you full for long. You need lasting energy from fats and protein!

My suspicion from seeing your diet breakdown is that you aren't eating enough fat to combat the metabolic slowdown. Check out the research here http://www.eatfatlosefat.com/research.php

Good fat boosts your metabolism like crazy and is super healthy for you. Try it and see if it works for you! You have nothing to lose if you've been on a 2 month plateau - shake it up!

Weight Loss for anyone who has ever doubted starvation mode... Nov 18 2009

I wish people wouldn't doubt that starvation mode exists. I am pretty sure I was in it last year. I wanted to see if I could lose faster than 1 pound a week, so I restricted to 1200 a day, but as I'm a black belt in taekwondo who trains at least an hour a day, this was way too little for me. After four weeks of that I gained 2 pounds.

Then I upped my calories to 1500-1700, kept my exercise the same, and though I held steady for about a week after that I went back to losing 1 pound a week.

Weight Loss Could I be at my ideal weight? Nov 02 2009

Hey girl, this is very similar to my story too! I am 5'6" and 142 and I can't get back down to 138 -- sometimes I decide to do it but I get hungry and eat normal calorie intake whenever I try! (And just to compound this: even when I get really strict and can force myself to restrict I still don't lose the weight...go figure.)

Now I definitley need to take my own advice here, so take what I'm saying as though I am saying it to both of us since we both need it.

1. Nobody except you can even tell when it comes to a 5 pound difference.
2.Don't let the ghost of "I was thinner once" haunt you! Everyone was thinner once, like when they were 12. That doesn't make it good or right or desirable.
3. You're at a healthy BMI. BMI might not even be a good indicator, but it certainly isn't too lenient -- if anything it's too strict! So if BMI says you're fine, and you're a healthy person all around, I'd say let it go!

Weight Loss weight vs. size Nov 02 2009

Female.
5'6"
142 lbs
Size 6 US, Size 10 Australian/UK (Sometimes in pants an 8 US/ 12 Australian)
"Small" in most shirts, "Medium" if the shirt is very fitted around the boobs. It varies depending on the store though: I am always S in Tommy Hilfiger, always an M in Ralph Lauren.

I wonder how other girls my height and weight are wearing US 8-10? It could be that I carry a lot of my weight in my boobs  (Australian 10E, which the internet tells me is 32E), and I'm pretty muscular from all the martial arts.

At first I thought I was crazy but then I saw a couple of other people with my stats too!

Weight Loss Do I look fat? Nov 02 2009

You aren't fat at all. You do NOT look fat. Just ignore the person who says you could lose 10 pounds. You don't need to lose a thing - you look great.

I get worried too, thinking I look huge at 142. But my friends think I'm insane whenever I say that.

And in turn, I think you're crazy to think that you're fat!

Weight Loss Still Feeling FAT Nov 02 2009

You look healthy and not at all fat in your profile photo. You are not fat!

I have similar struggles to you...trying to accept myself...it's just one day at a time.

Just remember if your doctor says you're healthy then that is the most important thing. If you're not medically overweight then you are not fat (and even some people who are medically overweight don't look fat!).

Weight Loss When do you decide to stop losing? Nov 01 2009

Thanks to everyone for their input!

Bairn,  I know exactly what you mean. But when I look at your photos I can't imagine that you could ever possibly feel fat, since you are so slim and pretty!

Some of the people on this site do have such low goals that it makes me wonder if I am huge and don't know it! Still sometimes I do think I would have these "fat" days no matter what size I was. After all, I am a US 6/Aus 10 and an S in most shops, so I suspect I cannot actually be fat. I remember feeling fat at 138 pounds as well, in fact, even when I had friends ask me how I could be so slim and still eat chocolate.

Sometimes I feel that my need to be back at 138 (which became the magic number by accident...) is ruining my enjoyment of the here and now. Sometimes I resolve to lose the 4 pounds again, but it doesn't last long because I feel deprived.  And yet when I decide I won't try to lose the last four, and try to accept being 142 pounds, I feel fat and useless. It is such a struggle. This community helps a lot though, since sometimes just to be able to talk about it can be helpful.

Thank you so much for your reply. And yes, I am 21!

I can't believe I didn't even think about the points you brought up. In fact I think that I am almost *likely* to have this kind of dangerous neuro-chemistry - both my mother and grandmother have had eating disorders for most of their lives.

Weight Loss argh weight flunctuations Nov 01 2009
07:04 (UTC)

Big weight fluctuations happen to me too - in fact they happen to most people! Don't worry, it might not be actual weight gain! It can be carbohydrate stores in your body if you happened to eat more carbs than usual. It could also be water weight if you had something high in sodium the previous day to your weigh-in.

If you're fluctuating a lot then start using a tape measure and looking at your measurements, or have a "measurment garment" (I have a pair of skinny jeans that I bought at my skinniest that are totally unforgiving). Don't just rely on the number on the scale.

People say that to me too, and I have successfully maintained a 25-30 pound loss since august 08, and a BMI of between 22-22.5 (I fluctuate within the last five pounds).

In fact, some girls at school even said it to me when I was younger, before I was ever overweight.

People do this because of their own insecurities -- don't let it get you down!

Weight Loss I really need some advice from people who have lost weight Jul 01 2008

okay, this might not work for everyone but this helped me lose 30 pounds since January (not all with CC). I bet my dad $20 every week that I would lose 1 pound that week. (It was a one sided bet - I would give him $20 if I didn't lose, but if I did lose I kept my $20.)

I woudl email him the photograph of the number on the scale, since I live alone. I chose my dad because I knew that even $20 wasn't as bad as disappointing him after everything he's done for me. I found that if I was directly and clearly accountable to the scale and to another person who wanted me to be healthy, I could find a way to lose the weight every week. I never plateaued and I never ate too little or overexercised.  It is really important to chose a person who loves you no matter what, and who will never put you down if you don't reach that week's goal. Otherwise I can see this strategy having problems.

This is just another approach, a bit different. I found it worked for me because I would want to eat cake or chocolate, but just the thought of havng to tell my dad I didn't lose the weight that week, and paying out my hard-earned cash, was enough to stop me. BUT I acknowledge that this may not work for everyone. I just thought I'd mention it.

I got the idea from www.stickK.com if you're interested.

Weight Loss :( I overate AGAIN Jun 30 2008
20:30 (UTC)

OKay, first of all at 112 your weight should be fine - unless you're very short you're in the clear, so the real issue here is the habit. And you can crack it.

If you're feeling helpless like this maybe you should set some limits up that don't make you feel deprived but at the same time don't allow you to overeat. HEre's what I do. Monday to Friday I eat three meals, on three plates. I put all the food i'm going to eat on the plate, so I know exactly what I'm eating - sometimes I don't even bother to calorie count. I only have fruit or veggies for snacks and I never eat sweets. But every day on the weekend I eat 1 sweet treat, like a sundae or a waffle. These controls are easy to remember because this is quite traditional - desserts as special treats on special days, 3 square meals otherwise.

Some of you will recognise elements of the no s diet in that. I think this is a good way to take back control. It might take a while to get used to, I know, but the habit is what counts for you. check out www.nosdiet.com if you think it might help. It's probably good to combine this with calorie counting if you're unsure (that's what I do).

Remember, feeling bad about yesterday can't change yesterday. You have control only over what you do now. So don't feel bad. Make a change, and then feel good about how proactive you are!

Foods Calories in RINSED baked beans? Jun 30 2008

I have a great idea for you! Don't bother buying baked beans and rinsing them. Buy some white beans, also called cannellini beans - they're basically the same thing but you can either buy them dry or canned with no sauce. I eat these all the time and it's only 71 cals for 100g of beans (canned value).

Weight Loss question about days off!!! Jun 28 2008
17:10 (UTC)

Rest days are needed for weights and for weight-bearing cardio. So for example, you could swim and cycle without too many rest days, but if you run, you need to have rest days.

I run every second day, I train in tae kwon do and I have two rest days every week. I usually walk about half an hour on my rest day and do some stretching to make sure my joints and muscles are feeling good and relaxed.

Don't worry about this affecting your weight loss progress, just get your diet right given your exercise amount. I lost 30 pounds over 6 months doing even less exercise than this and I wasn't extremely overweight to start with (it's only in the last two months I started running, before that it was just lots of tae kwon do). So chill out! You don't want to get hurt. An injury really will screw up your progress.

Hope this helps!

Foods Is every day too often? Jun 28 2008
10:28 (UTC)

If anyone is curious about eggs, by the way, my doctor says you can have one every day but he recommends no more than that if you're trying to lose weight. I was glad as I eat a boiled egg almost every day - it's a great source of protein and good fat.

Foods Falafel Jun 27 2008
21:23 (UTC)

I make them and I shallow fry them in about 1/2 an inch of olive oil, then blot them so the oil left in is minimal. That works well for me. I have them just with salad and yoghurt - I do this about once a week and they've never affected my weight loss.

Motivation Weekends and Chocolate Jun 25 2008
21:56 (UTC)

I eat cheese - full fat cheese - every single day and I've lost about 27 pounds in 6 months. The key is to eat white cheese, which allegedly has more protein and less fat in it. But I keep the servings small - a small round of goat's cheese has 50 calories and that's all I need on my lunchtime baguette (I live in Paris).

As for sweets, I eat sweets only on the weekends but I never eat a lot of them - maybe a crepe with nutella one day and an ice-cream the next. This to me is how to sustainably incorporate sweets into the diet. When you get the craving, you say "Well, I will have that chocolate, but I'll have it on saturday afternoon". You manage the cravings like you would a persistent child. Good parents don't give children everything they ask for, but at the same time, it's a cruel parent who would never let their child have anything they wanted. So no, two days won't ruin things, but it has to be only two days or a similar limit imposed and enforced.

If I have to have something sweet during the week I have yoghurt with honey or fruit.

However, you won't be able to healthily stay at 1200 cals if you add in an icecream which could be 300 cals - so you will need to up your exercise during the week. Your exercise levels seem low which might be restricting your food options and making dieting more misery-inducing. I'd up the exercise to 1 hour at least 2-3 days a week, or half an hour of more intense exercise like jogging or cycling. But at the same time if you start intense exercise you'll need rest days where you just walk a bit or something.

Hope this helps...I rambled a bit, sorry!

Weight Loss What do I do? I am so depressed about this. :( Jun 23 2008

Water retention and fluctuations are a reality of losing weight. Someone on this forum, I don't remember who, said to remember that when you diet your weight is like a boy playing with a yoyo walking down a hill. The overall trend will be down but you're going to inevitably see gains as you take in water and sodium, and your body adjusts and so on.

Don't sweat it! :)

I eat some cucumber. If you have serious munchies go ahead and eat the entire cucumber. It's only like 20 calories for the whole thing and it's so crunchy and refreshing!

First of all, congrats! What a massive achievement!

I am pretty sure your mom is just jealous of your success, as she too needs to lose a few. Every time you even mention it, it would be a reminder of how she isn't taking care of herself. Given that situation, maybe it's bettr not to update everyone every 2 weeks.

Maybe try to find out which of your friends doesn't mind, or even likes, to hear about your loss?

And you can always come here! We love to hear about it! :)

Fitness its NOT possible....... is it? Jun 22 2008
06:45 (UTC)

I was overweight despite being a black belt in tae kwon do and working out at the gym 4-5 days a week. It all comes down to what you eat. I would say to myself, "Wow, I just did 1.5 hours of tae kwon do, surely I can have this (extremely large) slice of cake for dessert! And ice cream!"  But you can't do that. I was still unhealthy, even though I was fit.

I was on the upper end of Australian 14 or US 10, now I'm the very low end of an Aus 12 (US 8). But I dream at night of an Aus 10 (US 6). That's my dream size. I might not reach it, since I have about 5 or 6 pounds left to lose, but I'm a small US 8 now so maybe I will. Fingers crossed!

Weight Loss Making myself insane! Any ideas? Jun 15 2008

If you feellike you eat constantly, and this feels bad, I was in the same situation and I decided to keep calorie counting but combine it with the No S Diet (www.nosdiet.com). The founder doesnt' realise it but No S is actually a shorthand for calorie counting anyway, but it's much easier long-term. I am like you - I don't feel good eating little meals, and I didn't lose when I did.  I like to eat 3 meals a day and I think someone with an ED past might benefit from this more traditional and relaxed, "normal" set up.

Yoga is super easy to do at home - in some ways even better because you should not be competitive in it. Anyone who does yoga with competition on the brain is doing it wrong, and if the people in your area are snobby about it then they probably are doing it wrong. My mother is a yoga teacher and she has no time for these people, they see yoga as another fitness fad. Actually yoga is about learning to work with your body and connect with it. Very healthy for people with former EDs (my mom is one too).

I would advise getting books or a dvd. Go as traditional as possible. In terms of books you might want to try BKS Iyengar.

Motivation How do you resist temptation? Jun 15 2008
13:52 (UTC)

I'm also a healthy weight, but since I am still losing I have 1 dessert a week (and a week should be fixed, monday-sunday or something, so you're not tempted to move it around). Trust me, this is a great way to work it - you never deprive yourself, you just postpone the pleasure and you choose something that you really love.

This has helped my relationship with food to improve. I don't feel guilty having desserts now, so I enjoy my 1 dessert a week more than when I had them every day. Before, desserts were like an abusive boyfriend - you love it but you know that it'll hurt you later. If you have 1 dessert a week, you make dessert a booty call - you call it when you want it, you have no lasting ties to dessert (ie fat), and it has no say in the matter.

Well that's how I think of it anyway! :) I'm also in college so that might be why.

Weight Loss The No S Diet, anyone tried it? Jun 14 2008

holyfear, they don't take them out of the picture at all. They allow them on days that start with S, "sometimes", so in moderation. This is basically what I plan to do for the rest of my life - small sweets only allowed twice a week. I can't be counting calories forever, though I think counting is more effective in the loss phase.

In the maintenance phase I think No S is a great strategy. The whole point of No S is to build healthy habits that become unconcious, and that you follow forever.
