Hmm dinners and snacks are all the trickiest part of my day as well!

I just find it easier to give in to richer but smaller things.  My dinners at my boyfriend's house are intensely rich, so I try to stay satisfied with smaller portions (try...) and eat desserts like fruits and dark chocolate, things that are satisfying in smaller portions.

What do you currently eat for most meals and such?

I'll gladly be a motivation buddy!

I joined this site years ago, but am recently back after a 2 year break.  Just looking to reign in my habits again...already at a decent weight, I just don't like the out-of-control feeling creeping up again!

By the way, I'm 22 and currently in my internship to finish out my degree :)

Foods Good breakfast ? Apr 24 2008

That's certainly a nice healthy breakfast.  As the others said, certainly feel free to add a little bit more on to that (preferably a protein).

It really comes down to how many calories you're willing to spend on breakfast.

What I've finally found that works for me, and keeps me full for a solid 4-5 hours, is a HUGE bowl (maybe 2-3 cups) of cheerios with about .5 cup skim milk, and then I eat a whole hard boiled egg as well as a hard-boiled egg white.  Sometimes I'll throw in some fresh pineapple or cantaloupe for kicks and variety.  This comes out to about 400ish calories.

Short story: you've got a solid breakfast laid out, just add some protein to it.  eat the whole banana, maybe have a larger glass of orange juice, etc.

Happy Breakfasting :)

Original Post by floggingsully:

Oh, I think AmethystGirl and I both understand what your saying about the whole "net calorie" thing.  What we're trying to say is that it's a useless calculation which serves no useful purpose and is not supported by any scientific research.  It's worthless dribble that get's spewed all over these forums and it needs to stop.

There is no reason to treat the calories you burn during exercise different from the calories you burn sitting on the couch.  If you subtract the calories you burn at the gym from the calories you eat you are treating those exercise calories differently.  Add up ALL of the calories you burn, subtract it from the calories you eat to calculate your deficit (which, by the way, is the same as your "net" calories if you use the term net correctly).

This is what I was trying to portray...All the calories you burn (which CC figures out in the way I mentioned earlier; i.e. you cant just add calories burned at gym + daily burn) - what you ate would be your deficit yes.  I was never arguing that point.  I was simply pointing out that you dont want that deficit to get too low...

If you burn only 1400 in a day, and eat 1200, and dont do any exercise, yeah 200 will be your deficit.  I got that.  days I eat 1200 and burn 1400 (daily burn) + 400 (in 40 minutes) at the gym, for a total daily burn of 1760 (as according to CC), my total deficit would be 560.  I don't see how our views are differing on this topic.. Are we perhaps differing on the amount that should be eaten? I feel like, for me, that deficit may  be too high.  This is all I've been trying to say....

I in no way ever implied to count calories sitting on a couch differently from gym calories....of course they're no different! What I did say, was that CC already takes into account those sitting-on-the-couch calories (if you're set at sedentary) but not the gym calories.

Hm, I'm sensing people aren't quite understanding what I'm saying...or I'm not quite saying it in the way I mean to be portrayed..

I realize, amethystgirl, that if you eat 1300 and burn 400 that yes, you would be at -500 calories for the day.  Which would put you at an even worse situation of having only 800 net calories.  Search other posts for the whole net cal thing.  That's what I'm trying to portray here.  Evidence suggests a person eats 1200 NET calories a day.  If a person has a low daily burn rate, it may not be possible to healthily have a 500 calorie deficit every day.

That 1300 calories you ate is what your body needs to do its basic functions while at a sedentary rate.  If you bump your rate to active, you'll obviously need more calories to supply your body with what it needs to simply maintain its organ functions for the day.

It's true what I said.  I'm not counting calories burned at the gym differently.  CC does what I mentioned if you ever take notice.

For me, I burn approximately 1 calorie a minute...1440 a day or so.  Thus, if it takes me 40 mintues to burn 400 calories at the gym, I have NOT burned, for the day, 1840 calories.  Nope.  I have to subtract those 40 calories that were already included in my 1440 daily burn.  CC would show that I burned about 1800 for the day.

Technically yes, you would need to eat some calories back.  If you eat 1300 and burn off 400 (that is, 400 net calories...those you burn minus those you would have burned anyway sitting around during that time frame) you would technically be at only about 900 calories for the day.

However, you're pretty small, so the 1200 rule meant for the average woman may not apply to you.  I would say you'd be safe to eat back to between 1050 and 1100 calories.

As a general rule of thumb if you don't want to do a lot of math, try to eat back at least half of what you burned...that way you're safely in the middle :)

Haha I definitely feel the same way!

As others said, I think we all tend to eat more on the non-exercise days as a result of boredom.  Also, a certain amount of exercise (not over-doing it) supresses appetite...so you've got two things working for you there.

I have no problem keeping under 1400 or 1200 on exercise days, but on days I don't exercise, I tend to stay around 1400-1500 lol.  Not a big deal, but still perplexing.

If your finding it to interfere with your weightloss...instead of going to the gym, take a walk outside (if it's nice weather where you live) and just do a relaxing stroll.

Foods food combo Mar 01 2008
18:36 (UTC)

Just to add a blurb pertaining to certain food combos creating stomach upset/headache etc...One thing my doctor told me to help stave off my almost-daily headaches is to always make sure I pair some protein with the carbs I eat, especially if on an empty stomach.  Eating pure carbs will mess with your blood sugar, often giving you a headache.

Your oatmeal concoction sounds like a very healthy meal though, so I wouldn't worry at all about that!  You have good carbs, healthy fats, solid protein, and some calcium from the yogurt in there...good combo to me!

What helps for me is to really  not dwell on those snacky foods and such.  You ate it, oh well, life goes on.

Also, you mention "Now imagine if I hadn't eaten that cookie"....that says to me the snacks you are chosing to eat aren't that amazing...if you're going to treat yourself to an indulgence (which I do recommend), at least make it something that's going to make you say "Wow I almost just missed out on the most amazing indulgence ever!" haha.

For me, if I travel out of the states (often to China Town area of Toronto, Canada) I will allow myself some of the local sweets...an indulgence that is tasty, home made, and rare.  Then my line of thinking is always "I'm glad I tried that and ate it while I could, it was delicious!"

Pick your weapons wisely ;)

Like some others have said, I also try to eat most things just in moderation.  Though, there are ones I completely avoid unless I can split them with someone (mainly those dessert-y things you find at starbucks, etc type places that go for 600cals for a tiny bite lol).

Overall, what I miss most is not having to count calories! haha.

I agree with what everyone else has said already.  There's a lot of good stuff in those egg yolks!

with my breakfast I tend to have 2 hard boiled eggs, but I take the yolk out of one of them; so I get the protein from both egg whites, and the vitamins and such from at least 1 yolk.  I figure it's a decent balance haha

Graduation is a good tool for some motivation.  Also use your new upcoming life to start a new lifestyle too.  When I came to college I was finally able to eat exactly what I wanted and could plan my own meals, it's a nice change.

LIke others said, savor the food you eat.  If you decide to eat a 100 calorie pack (which, btw I avoid completely b/c of the impulse to eat more than 1 pack!), sit down with it at a table somewhere and take small bites and really appreciate whatever flavors you can find in there.  If nothing else, it will slow your eating down and hopefully prevent you from tearing through quite as many.

And remember, keep positive :)  Good habits are easy to keep once they form, so keep working toward that :)

Weight Loss Carb cravings and binging - a never ending cycle? Feb 29 2008
16:32 (UTC)

That's a really good point that ddugan^ made.  Some foods are just trigger foods for people, point blank.  For me, there's just certain things I always try to keep in my dorm room to snack on in reasonable amounts..it just hardly works.  My one weakness: really salty nuts.  I've found if I buy the unsalted, I can eat them in a healthy way though! haha

That being said, I can see where you're coming from and definitely relate.  You mentioned it often occurs around TTOM...that's just an unfortunate thing in general!  I'm on BC and for about 3-4 months had skipped the placebo pills and things had been going good, I hadn't had any of those intense cravings for months (in the past years, I've had periods that were a bit out of control!), then I took the placebo pills last month..holy moly, I wanted chocolate and salt and I wanted it NOW! haha.  So, forgive yourself during those times (forgive, but don't use it as an excuse Smile)

I never really ate out of control until I got to college (granted, my highest weight was 137...not horrible at 5'3"...but eating 700cals of vending machine food was not controlled).

But here are a few things I've learned that have started to help me:

If I go too long on a deficit, I just get way too hungry and that's when binging happens (yes, even if it's a healthy deficit of 300-500cals).  So when I visit home or eat out with people (about once every 3 weeks) I take those 2-3 days to eat normally, without counting calories.  It helps every time

Sometimes it's just better not to open that can of worms  (or pringles, or soda...etc) in the first place

If you find trigger foods, replace them.  for me, salted nuts -> unsalted nuts. Brownies -> Dove dark chocolate squares. Ice cream -> (literal) frozen yogurt cups.  etc.

And biggest of all, forgiveness.  As I'm sure you've noticed already, we treat our bodies better when we feel better about them.  If you feel fat that day, ignore it. Don't pinch and poke at the roles of fat, don't wear tight pants, etc.  Do your makeup and hair, looks nice.  Take great pride whenever you do avoid that bad snack. And if you mess up and eat half a loaf of bread, oh well.  You're human, humans mess up occasionally.  Move on and eat healthy for the rest of the day.

Sorry for the long message, but I hope it helps a bit :)

Fitness Caffeine before the gym? Feb 29 2008
16:19 (UTC)
13

I've actually read studies where those who drink caffeine before a workout do have better workouts as well as better post-workout recovery.

However, that being said....I don't think the study was referring to caffeine drinks.  For me, 2-3 times a week I'll drink a cup of coffee, and usually those 2 days fall on the weekend mornings, right before I go to the gym.  It definitely does help (particularly on the motivation end for me...I've now got energy and need to do something with it!)

Like others have said, just be careful with the caffeine drinks.  My boyfriend overdoes the coffee...and every morning has 2-3 cups of coffee just to function above the level of a caveman haha.  All in all though, long as you don't add a ton of sugar and cream to your coffee, it's a fairly healthy thing in moderation.

Short story here: Find better choices for your caffeine fix, and if you want to keep getting a caffeine fix, drink it sparingly throughout the week!

I've also never actually seen this show before...but I can see completely where you are coming from.

Basically, someone at an unhealthy weight should not be complacent in the sense that they just sit idle-y by being unhealthy.  However, on the flip side, I know I certainly have a much easier time motivating myself to go to the gym and eat healthy when I already feel good from the inside out.

Being comfortable with who you are all around may give some people an excuse, but I think it gives many more a reason to achieve a healthy body that they can feel even better in

Wow, let me just say I'm impressed that anybody can figure out all those triggers.."cold feet"?  that's detailed!

I wish I could figure out even one thing that caused my near-daily headaches..but so far the regular doctor and eye doctor have not figure out anything.  Though, for the fun of it, I'll mention a few other possible triggers that my doctor has talked about ( and that may be possible causes for me still...if I could figure it out better!)

TMD (problems with tightness in the mandibular jaw joint and how you bite)
Teeth grinding
Eye problems
'Tension' headaches (for me, using my forehead muscles too much=ouch)

I just wish there were an easier way to figure out between all these possible causes!

I just read somewhere that ideally, the best is to do like 30 minutes, rest 20, then do 30 more...but I would imagine sticking in two work outs a day, with proper eating, really can't be too bad

My question to you is....do you sweat a lot? lol I've often wanted to go to the gym a second time..but I sweat so much, and I just hate the hassle of having to shower twice..I'm envious of those who can go to the gym during lunch hour or something and just go right back to working haha

These all sound like delicious ideas!

I've recently discovered a delicious recipe that I use every day and it's about 250 calories or so

For mine (amounts can be adjusted):

1/4 cup dry oats (75cal)
1 6oz container of Dannon Light n Fit, any flavor (60cal)
1 TBSP of honey (i use flavored honey) (60 cal)

Mix that all, let it sit over night.  Next day:
I heat up some frozen berries, about 1/2 cup (35ish cal) in the microwave until they get warm and juicy, then mix that into the oatmeal.

It's delicious, sweet, and creamy :)

Depends how hard core you are about going low cal here

I personally really like vodka & diet tonic w/ a twist of lime.  basically about 64 cals depending on how much vodka you put in!

I also really like bloody mary's.  I make mine w/ about an ounce of vodka (64cal), one small can of tomato juice (30cal), twist of lemon, dash of tobasco, and some celery salt.  Fairly low calorie for a delicious and filling drink :)

I had a dream once where there was this gorgeously delicious large mountain of an ice cream parfait style thing with oreo crumbles and mint chocolate ice cream (typically not my choice icecream..but it worked) and I ate the WHOLE thing, without a tiny bit of guilt, because it was a delicious dream!

I woke up, feeling completely satisfied in my sweet tooth craving, and hadn't devoured so much as 1 calorie :)

Weight Loss Protective over food Feb 09 2008

Well, I don't do it in the same way all of you are describing...mainly because I have a dorm to my own at college, so no one to steal the food, and when I'm home in PA I'm often at my boyfriend's house, and thus don't really have any of my own food there anyway.

However, I really almost dread going out to eat at places where you order family style, and everyone just picks what they want as they go...oooh that drives me batty! I grew up as an only child for the most part, and maybe that contributes a bit?

My boyfriend and I like to refer to one incident that occurred last year as "the sushi incident" haha.  It was our anniversary, so we went to a really nice sushi restaurant, and I like to eat and enjoy my food a lot slower than he does...so we just ordered a bunch you know: "two tuna sushi, 4 salmon sashimi" etc and they bring it out in a big plate in the middle of the table....There was one tuna sushi left, and he said "are you going to eat that?" and (well, I was in a slightly pissy mood to being with..so this didn't help) I immediately freaked out saying "Yes I'm going to eat that!  that's my piece! we ordered to share it evenly that's mine!" haha.  We laugh about it now..but it really was tragic then!

I got slightly this way when we ordered dim sum from a Chinese place too...I ate WAY slower b/c I cannot handle chopsticks and slippery dim sum..and I was hoarding my food so he wouldn't touch it haha.

Why do we do this??  Odd.

I feel your pain..my face is in a constant battle..I'm on two different prescription pills to help w/ the acne, right now it's in it's perfect stage and it's pretty darn clear lol.

I sweat a whole lot too...not just in the gym, but walking around between classes (in this darned humid heat of Miami!).

I don't know what your full skin care routine is, but do you wear makeup and wash it off before you work out? (I never understood people who wear makeup to the gym...Undecided)  Also, I'm assuming you have bangs from your picture (if that's you in the pic that is..), do you keep your bangs back while you exercise?  Do you have product in your hair that could be clogging up your forehead pores?

Otherwise I have no idea lol.  sweat is just lovely that way...Just keep washing, occasionally with a scrubby wash if you want..if it keeps getting worse, possibly make a trip to a dermatologist if you can :)

I'll chime in here and say that it really is most likely that you're just not lubed up enough.  Trust me...I would know! Undecided

My boyfriend and I have had a few nights where we just try...and I'm not lubed up enough, so then he attempts to get me there, and then he loses it, and then I lose it..and we just end up laughing and revert back to manual for that night!

Like others said, you can try the KY stuff, though it's kind of liquidy...we refer to it as "the goo" lol.  It does work though.

Worst case scenario, I don't know if you plan on/are currently at a college, but I avoid the whole parental awkwardness thing by going to the health center here on campus...much easier that way.

Good luck ;)

Weight Loss ANyone on Yaz Birth Control? Feb 06 2008

Some say it's a myth that BC makes you gain, others personally disagree.  Thus, I strongly believe it depends on your body.  I for one love Yaz.  I tried Ortho Tricyclin Lo but it made me (and my sister also) break out like crazy.  Been on Yaz for about 1.5 yrs now and I can't complain at all

Also, you most likely won't gain water weight w/ Yaz because it includes a light dose of a diuretic, to help w/ PMS bloat and such.

As others have said though, and IUD may be good if you're really concerned about the hormones an such.

I'd say the others got this pretty well covered, but I'll just add my experience :)

When I got to college and did a yr worth of personal training for 3hrs a week of weights, I supposedly (according to their measurements) lost about 6lbs of fat and gained I think 3-4lbs of muscle.  So, if I had to guess, I'd say it's pretty easy taht you could have gained between 4-6 lbs of muscle or so...either way though, when combined with fat loss, even 1 lb extra will probably be noticable!

*as a side note...I notice you have a picture of an autoharp as your icon...that scares me hahah. My head music therapy adviser here at college is obsessed with the autoharp...I however, am really not a fan :P haha

I've actually wondered about that ^^^

Does your body still go through a cycle if you're on a pill like Yaz? (as opposed to Ortho tricyclin..which clearly goes thru 3 cycles lol).

To answer the original  post, I think that's a fairly normal thing...it never happened to me much (no PMS symptoms did either) but being that it's a pretty important time in the cycle, I'd say it's fairly normal that your body would go haywire a bit
