Foods Low fat Granola ideas Nov 16 2008

Granola is really easy to make.  You just put oats, a bit of honey or sugar, and some coconut, nuts, or whatever you want (dried fruit is better added later) in a bowl and mix them together, then spread it out on a nonstick pan and toast it in the oven until it looks good (you have to stir it around every once in a while).  You can easily fiddle around with the recipe analyzer to come up with a recipe that fits your diet.

Health & Support Ladies! Does anyone have an IUD for their birth control? Oct 26 2008

Original Post by alle0299:

Just to warn you though, my sister's doctor will not give her an IUD until she marries her boyfriend (even though they have been together for 10 years) because apparently without marriage her doctor doesn't consider that monogomous.

Ew, that's awful!  I can't believe her doctor would be so judgmental!  Nothing about a marriage makes a ten-year relationship more monogamous than it already is.

I recently asked my gyno about a copper IUD because I've been reading about all the weird stuff the hormones in the pill can do to you and it seems like since I lost 20 pounds the few side effects I've had have gotten worse, but my doctor says they don't insert it into women who haven't had children because the uterus is more easily perforated.  I don't think I'll look for someone else to do it though cos I wanted one so that contraception would be LESS complicated!

Fitness Toes go numb during some workouts???? Oct 16 2008

My toes frequently go numb when I do repetitive motions with my feet - walking, cycling, elliptical.  I've never tried pushing with the heels on the elliptical, though.  I have very wide feet though, so I think that's most of the problem.  I usually can't find normal shoes that are wide enough.

Weight Loss calorie total for the week? Oct 03 2008

Original Post by thehealthieryou:

I agree with the responders who say that is is NOT the same thing. As a Nutrition counselor I tell people it is ok to go over your calorie level a little but just pick up on the activity level to burn off what you eat. At the end of the day our body assess what has been taken in and what needs to be stored. If you ate too many calories it will know it and start storing it as fat for the day. This means that when you wake up you have a little more fat in storage that you need to burn off. Sometimes we store extra carbs( glucose) and this is converted into glycogen, this is saved for when you need a burst of energy adn it gets converted back into glucose, about a 30 min supply, on top of that every thing else gets stored as fat, not protein.

Yeah, but even if you did store some energy as fat but had an overall deficit or broke even for the week or month or whatever, wouldn't it not make any difference in the long run?  Cos with that deficit, you're burning stored energy, am I right?

Unless you're 100% perfect on your calorie counting, which no one is, I'm sure you're storing and un-storing energy all the time.  When you look at it like that, isn't the OP correct?

I got one of these today because I saw that the Vegetable Beef is only 60 calories and I was sooooo excited because I knew that soup would fill me up for lunch even though it was low calorie, but it was disgusting!  It was basically like drinking metallic salt water with little meaty bits floating around!  I looked at the ingredients and they have all sorts of awful-sounding preservatives and stuff.  Next time I want soup at school I'm going to make and freeze portions of my own soup beforehand, especially since it costs almost three dollars!

One time I was in a group in an art class with a friend who is heavyset, but she's beautiful anyway.  Another girl in the group said that for part of our art project we should take a picture of a really unsexy person in a bikini.  She turns to my friend and says, "Hey, you wanna put on a bikini?"  I was so shocked I hardly knew what to say.  I kind of did a mental double-take, like it didn't quite register that that was the least funny thing the girl could say, even though she was laughing hysterically.  I assured my friend that she was quite sexy and she shrugged off the rude girl.  That comment just made me feel sick, though.

Have you tried eating your BMR?  A general rule is to not eat under your BMR, since that is the minimum amount of calories your body needs to function properly.

I've been on a Cheerios kick for the last few months after I realized that they only have one gram of sugar and 100 calories per cup!  That's like half as many calories as the average delicious cereal, so you can eat twice as much!  I do, anyway.  It's pretty much the perfect breakfast cos it's basically a huge bowl of comfort food.

Weight Loss Playing the "who's bigger" game Aug 19 2008
17:28 (UTC)

I never used to do this until I started here because everyone's posting "fat" pictures and "skinny" pictures, comparing themselves to celebrities and talking about the differences in their bodies now that they've lost/gained weight.  For example, I read that someone noticed that they now have definition in their collarbone and I go, "Do some people not have a defined collarbone?  I'll have to look at people's collarbones."  People ask things like, "How do I get rid of stretch marks?  I have like two!" and I think, "Hey, I've been covered in stretch marks since puberty!  Am I supposed to care?"  Then people start threads that are like "what size are you at this weight?" and "what's your weight at this size?" and I'll start trying to guess the size/weight of people I meet.

It's not like I care about people's sizes; I just notice them more.  I feel like it's kind of a bad habit.  Maybe I should lay off the forums.

Fitness tire question for cyclist Aug 16 2008
16:23 (UTC)

You should get a flat repair kit and frame pump if you're going to be riding out in the middle of nowhere.  Both of those can be found at Wal-Mart and bike shops.  You should also probably get a few spare tubes.

It's not that hard to fix a flat, but it takes a little practice so start now instead of taking it to the bike shop!  If you don't have anyone to call when you get a flat in the middle of nowhere, you're not going to be able to get it to the bike shop either!  Also, make sure your tire is centered between your brakes when you put it back on, otherwise your brakes will wear unevenly.

The virtual model isn't as customizable as I'd like.  I remember one from before (that I can't find anymore) where you could actually input your measurements.  My virtual model didn't look much like me since I carry my weight in different places.

I remember doing one of those!  Wasn't there something like that on the Land's End website?  I don't think they have it any more.

When I started taking BC about 4 years ago, I was on Weight Watchers at the same time and I lost 20 lbs with no problem.  When I stopped doing Weight Watchers, I noticed that the pill made me feel like eating was more of a priority and it was the first thing I'd think to do when I was bored, but it doesn't feel like that on the "off week".  I'm still on BC and I've lost about 15 lbs since I started CC in May.  It helps to snack on veggies and I like to put a little soy milk in my coffee I sip at work to stave off hunger and snacky-ness.

First of all, you'll be fine!

Second of all, the calorie count in the domino's pizza on this site is a little misleading because you enter the crust and the toppings separately!  I've done the same thing and didn't notice until many weeks later.  I still lost weight, though!

Bananas are pretty good in pancakes, if you like them!  They kind of make them a little gooey on the inside.

I use all whole wheat flour for my pancakes.  I think they taste way better than white flour pancakes.

Your body is going to burn the calories it's going to burn no matter when you consume calories, so why would it matter when you eat?  So "when we don't BURN energy it gets stored as FAT!!"?  Well, we're burning energy all the time, so you just have to not eat more calories than the calories burned in order to not gain weight.

The "large breakfast, medium lunch, small dinner" suggestion keeps you from starving all day because you're barely eating then pigging out at night.  Of course you're going to gain weight if you starve yourself all day and overcompensate at night.
