Weight Loss I gained everything i lost Jul 19 2008

My wife and I fast during the Easter Season.  For 3 days we only drink water. The first day is murder.  But, amazingly on the second and third day I'm not hungry at all.  On the fourth day I have to make myself eat. Sure we end up loosing quite a bit of weight during that time.  But, that's not the reason for doing it. In my case it would be hard to eat breakfast then nothing all day.  Then a heavy dinner.  I would be starving during the day light hours!

New Members I don't think calorie counting works for me. Any help ? Jul 16 2008

First off, I would give it a little more time. Second, you may be close to your bodies optimum weight.  In my case I lost 20 pounds fairly quickly.  But I was at least 30 pounds overweight.  I've got about 10 more pounds to go.  And the weight is not coming off quickly or easily! In my opinion, I think there is a "optimum" body weight for each individual. In my case when I hit this weight I can eat a little more and a little less and my weight does not vary.

Fitness Exercise for a bad knee? Jul 11 2008

I destroyed my knee skiing several years back. The only exercises that worked for me were "low-impact".  Biking worked out great.  My running days are over. But I find I get a great workout from Biking, and rowing and the Versa Climber.

I just watched it at home.  My wife, my son, his girlfriend and I found it to be boring.  I actually fell asleep! We all thought the ending was awful.  But, I've never read the series. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more.  Everyone having their own Demon was kind of creepy.

Thanks! Covers a lot of Asian foods in most Restaurants.  I know it's not exact.  But, at least it gives you a rough idea on calories. I noticed that it indicated each order was two servings. And the calories were for one. I guess you are suppost to share Wink

Foods When you don't like the taste of skim milk Jun 12 2008

Ugh, I hate skim milk... but I doubt I'll be drinking powdered milk any time soon. Having grown up on a farm where I got milk pretty much straight from a cow, I'm just more used to fresh milk. :) For lower-fat options I settle for the 1% or 2% milk, but never the fat-free.

My wife grew up on a dairy. I was invited to dinner and given a glass of milk. It was yellow and thick and tasted like butter. I didn't know what to say. We refused to drink anything but whole milk for years. Then we went to 2%. Then later to 1%.  I just can't do skim milk. I've put it on cold and hot cereal and taken it hiking.  That's it's limitations.

Weight Loss Unrealistic 600 calories a day? Jun 12 2008

I agree that 600 calories is a unreasonable goal. I can't see how anyone could maintain that restrictive a diet for very long. My wife did it because she had WLS. She still barely eats 1000 cal. a day. Her stomach just won't let her eat more. 1 cup meals are her max. She has lost over 40 lbs.  My wife's best friend had all kind of issues that you mention. Her doctor recommended what the American Heart Association suggests:

  • Weight loss to achieve a desirable weight (BMI less than 25 kg/m2)
  • Increased physical activity, with a goal of at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity on most days of the week
  • Healthy eating habits that include reduced intake of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol
  • My wife's friend was a borderline type 2 diabetic. With weight loss all these health issues were resolved. Notice that the recommendation states" healthy eating habits." I would get a second opinion.

If you have the money. Go for it. But, personally I wouldn't buy them. You'll find that you will only use few weight combinations. And why spend a bunch of money on something you will use occassionally.

Weight Loss Still "slightly over-weight", you've got to be kidding!!!!! Jun 12 2008

If I go by the BMI 155 lbs. is just barely on the "overweight" side.  You gotta be joking!  I've been 155 lbs before and I felt like crap.  And I looked like crap! I'm a 5'7" 45 year old male. I feel really good at between 165 and 170. So, my goal is to get to the weight range where I feel good.  About another 12 lbs. I started at 200 lbs. And that IStoo heavy. It also says I have a small frame.  My wife says different. I do have quite a bit of muscle mass.  So, that may throw off the BMI a tad.

My opinion in general is ignore it. Find a weight were you feel comfortable.

I have always liked rowing machines.  I have a bad knee (hurt it skiing). No running or jogging for me. You get almost all muscles involved in Rowing.  Back, legs, arms, hips, shoulders, abs and forearms.  Great low impact exercise in my opinion.

I guess should have been more specific and said complementary proteins. And they don't have to be eaten together at the same time. At least that's what the Center for Disease Control (CDC) states.

But, then again, we all know about the governments food conspiracy plots. Sealed

Well, if you hate Fords.  It won't work for you. I drive like an old Grandma.  So, that's probably why I get good gas mileage. It's hard to find a small pickup for sale.  But, big trucks are plentiful.  Hum, I wonder why? I think you will see a new line of 4 cylinder trucks soon. No one currently has a line. But, they will.

Heck, if you want the best of both worlds just buy a Ford Ranger/Mazda B2300. I get 29 mpg. And it hauls all the stuff I ever need. And new it's $10,000 less than the Camry. I pull a small camp trailer, take my camping gear. I've hauled washers, driers, freezers, literally tons of garbage, ect.  It's no rocket.  But, hey I didn't buy it for that purpose.

Depends on the size.  Could be 30, 37 or 47 cal. And here is a great link. http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fruits-and -fruit-juices/1884/2

www.Nutritiondata.com is a fantasic site if you really want to know details about food. I use it exclusively to make sure I get a balanced diet. Their food rating system is spot-on! Look-up Peppers, sweet, red, raw and you will know why I eat the expensive little monsters!  I put them in everything.

One small orange has 85% of your daily vitamin C. One small Red Pepper has 158% of you daily vitamin C.  The Red Pepper has almost double the amount!

You don't NEED it unless you can't get all your nutrients from your current diet. Even then, it's possible to get your missing nutritional elements from other foods. How do you think vegans do it? :)

Here is a list of just a few items that when combined will give you a complete protein from Vegetable sources. I like them all!

  • cereal + milk as breakfast cereal and milk
  • pasta + cheese as macaroni and cheese
  • rice + milk as rice pudding
  • wheat + peanuts as peanut butter sandwich
  • beans + wheat as baked beans and brown bread
  • peas + rye as split pea soup and rye bread
  • beans + corn as refried beans and tortillas
  • soybeans + seeds/nuts as trail mix

Well, based on pure economics. For the cost of the Camry. You could drive your 16 mpg vehicle for over 80,000 miles if gas were $5 a gallon. Plus you still have to pay insurance and buy gas for the Hybrid. The cheapest car you will ever own is the one you already have. Almost without exception.

I own a Touring motorcycle and I love it.  It does get over 50 mpg. But, the real reason to own a motorcycle is because you love to ride it. I would ride mine if I only got 10 mpg! But, it's nice that it gets great mileage, is smoking fast and just plain fun to ride.

Weight Loss I had Gastric Bypass over a year ago and I need support and advice Jun 11 2008

My wife had the Lap-Band surgery a year ago.  I'm concerned about how little she can eat. I know she is not getting the vitamins and nutrients she needs.  She only eats about 500 to 1000 calories every day. As far as recipe books go. I bought one somewhere online that was specifically for weight loss surgery. I looked everywhere at home and couldn't find it.

My wife has a hard time with anything soft.  Breads really choke her. Her doctor specifically told to eat lots of lean protein. And not to snack. Her stomach can only hold about a cup of food.  It is easy for her to eat every couple hours. So, the surgery in itself is not the answer. Just like everyone else trying to loose weight. WLS patients have to eat less calories than you burn.

Weight Loss Females... The perfect body? Jun 11 2008

It's good to see another guys perspective.  And what he said is true. Guys aren't looking for a stick figure. I haven't talked to many women who said they thought a skinny anorexic man is sexy. And I know this might sound sexist. But, I like a woman to look like a woman. I'd be lying if I said I find obese women sexually attractive. I don't.  But, lets be honest.  How many women find a big-gut on a man sexy? I think there has to be a balance there somewhere. I personally am attacted to a women who is a little on the heavy side than on the skinny side.  I like curves.

Weight Loss fostering a healthy lifestyle or screwing up my kids? Jun 11 2008

That's sort of scary. When my kids were little, their biggest concern was about what time theirfavorite cartoon came on. I'm not saying I would feed my kids cake and ice cream for dinner.  But, they never ate candy or drank soda regularly. At Mac Donald's they were more interested in playing on the playground. I don't know how many times I had to tell them to "eat their food." My kids just got use to eating healthy because that is pretty much all they were offered. I sure wasn't a good example!

Fitness How do I know if I am gaining muscle? Jun 11 2008
    15:58 (UTC)

Probably not muscle.  Heck, I don't know any guys that could put on that much muscle in that short of time. I sure can't. And I used to lift for competitively! Man, I ate a lot of chicken breasts and rice.

Your body naturally doesn't want to carry around excess muscle. It's uses up a lot of calories. Your body naturally wants to store excess calories as fat. It's a more efficient way for you body to  use stored energy. In your case I don't think it is fat. Not much help huh?

My wife had the Lap-Band surgery about a year ago.  She has lost a little over 50 lbs. But, she wasn't that heavy when she started.  And I have to say that her face and skin has a lot more wrinkles than it used too. Not that it makes any difference to me. I'd love her no matter what she looks like. I believe that sometimes your skin just can't adjust to a lot of weight loss.  Especially when you hit the mid-40's like we have.
