I found this salad in Asda (Walmart). Costs 98p is around 90 cals and has lovely lettuce, grated carrot and beetroot. I pretty much eat it every day! They also do fresh fish which they put in a foil bag which you put in the oven to steam/poach. Fantastic invention! Pity the Asda is the furthest away of all the supermarkets!

I got my exercise done this morning first thing. I am trying to exercise before breakfast at least once a week. Nailed that and it's just Monday (though the bank holiday helps)

Thanks for the views! I think on balance the wine gets it. If I had the breakfast I'd spend all day knowing I'd had my treat.

I take your point shandykat. My rule however, is only to use food as a treat for good eating! That way, it does form part of the diet. I wouldn't use food as a means to celebrate anything else I might have achieved. That is a slippery slope. What if I had a run of wins of the horses?!

helpless, looking at your photo I am not surprised you struggle to lose 2lbs per month. To lose it, you have to have it first! I'm losing 2lb a week at the moment quite nicely, but I am 230 lbs to start with!

I agree with duke - it's about attitude. Why are you 'hoping' today will be better? No need to hope, if you want it to be a better day, make it one. Beating yourself up over it won't help, making today a better day will though. It's just one day. If the next 6 are good, then the averages are all in your favour.

Wow!

I am now extraordinarily pleased to have started this thread!

I went for a mega long walk on Sunday - blisters and everything. All week I have been saying to people it must have been 6-7 miles, but wasn't sure as I have no pedometer. So this site is a real find for me. It was 8.44 miles total!!

Thanks ever so much. Wish I hadn't bothered buying that pedometer from ebay last night now! At least I don't have to retrace my walk though to work out the distance!

Re. the zig zag, where did you get the info for this? do you find it is working? I was thinking of chopping my 1900 per day to make it a zig zag. Wouldn't mind a bigger day on the weekend.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your break up. I know it sucks for you right now. For comfort/inspiration, I'd recommend Unanswered Prayers by Garth Brooks or Something inside so Strong by Labi Safre. Actually I have loads of songs that'd help. It seems that most of my life has some sort of soundtrack that I have imposed over it for good and bad times.

Anyway, that's not the question you asked!

At the moment, your diet/healthy lifestyle is probably the last thing you want to worry about. If you allow it to happen though, you might fall off the wagon in a big way. Yet, in 3 months time when the upset has abated and you're happy with the world again, I reckon you'll kick yourself for giving up. I think you should try to avoid using this break up as an excuse to let yourself slip, and if anything, you should try to throw yourself into it even more. As others have said, and as you already know, you always get a little high after exercising.

I exercise every day at around 5pm. It's usually just after I get home from seeing my father who is in a hospice. Every day I see a further decline in his health, so every day I push harder, even though I sometimes just want to slump into the sofa and pig out and cry. On Saturday my ex-GF got married to a former colleague of mine, I excerised more. I made a commitment to myself that I was going to lose fat and get in shape, so In my mind, no person or no circumstance is going to stop me from carrying that out. Terrible things happen. I can use them as an excuse to fail or I can use them to spur me on. I am trying to choose the latter. It isn't easy, but it is satisfying.

I believe you should think about the reasons you started this journey. Maybe it was to be more healthy? or fit into some old clothes? or get control over your eating? I imagine whatever the reason, that reason hasn't changed. Some things in your life you can't control, some you can. This is one of the ones you can. So I say, go for it! You are so very very close! It's going to be such a great day for you when you hit that marker you shouldn't let anyone deny you that.

Wow, I am impressed by both you guys! (except for the naughty breakfast miss!)

I still can't bring myself to weigh foods often enough. If the current plan doesn't work, then I'm going to get very specific about things like that.

K-Loo, I am with you on the exercise. It's so tough to kid yourself that you enjoy it! I am on a rest day. I didn't rest Saturday as usual and was going to rest either yesterday or today. It's today, but enforced rather than choice. I would have skipped the rest and had a relatively gentle cycle, but after doing a 2 1/2 walk on Sunday in untested shoes (burned a whopping 1025 cals according to this site) I have a couple of nasty blisters! Did some upper body weights yesterday, but probably shouldn't do twice in a row. As I can now walk without crying, I'll be back on the bike tomorrow. Am planning cycle in morning and weights in evening!

Keep them coming........

Sounds like there are some good diet products available over in the US

Whilst I appreciate the moderators intervention I'm am puzzled as to why a post I made in an effort to get the subject off of world population was removed yet comments a certain person made and who is out to cause trouble on many threads still remain...when they still mention "world population" and name calling. Rather unfair I think.

I think the mods have gone OTT here. I had a post removed in which I said that the fella who had a masterplan to cleanse the population and a plan B to limit parentage to 1 child per family seemed odd to have his plans that particular way around! Hardly offensive.

I agree that he is a WUM, but let's not get fooled into thinking that even in trying to be controversial he is adopting a position isn't so outlandish that there aren't others that agree. I have been heartened to read the posts that challenge his, as in the main they are thought through and intelligent, rather than abusive or reverting to the 'you're rascist, fattist, sexist, anti-disabled, ageist' route.

I'm not saying that I'm never going to drink again, I just felt like I was putting so much effort into the weightloss, yet sabatoging myself by drinking lots of calories/then snacking when buzzed that it needed to stop until I have a better handle on things.

I agree entirely with these sentiments. I think sabotage is the exact word to explain it as well. You slog your guts out and then blow it on booze. Doesn't take long to realise that it just isn't worth it. I've allowed for 1700 calories per week alcohol, but I just can't get over the fact that it is 1/2 a pound of fat! I'm going to just try and have either nothing or just one bottle of wine. I figure if I can avoid alcohol enough, when I drink it'll have a greater effect earlier!

What is it with everyone and law school? It isn't that tough really! Maybe I am just approaching it with rose tinted glasses (or claret glasses). You wait until you have to work for a living guys! Especially if you go into law! It's all the work you have now, but with time pressure and with clients and Judges on top of you as well!

Ok, I think I get it. If I were to diet without resistance training then would I lose muscle and not so much fat then?

I'd be really grateful if you guys would check my post as linked bleow and give your views. I am working pretty hard with this plan and would like to know if it'll work efficiently. Having read the article on testosterone nation, I think I am somewhere near being correct.

I am confused. If you can't gain muscle on a calorie deficit, what is the point of resistance training whilst dieting? Am I right in thinking that it is just a better way of burning calories than cardio?

I don't think that comment was meant as a criticism of children's eating habits, more a suggestion that once you reach a certain age you know what is good and bad in food, be that 12 or 14 or whatever. It is largely dependent upon what education you have had though. The vast majority of 5 year olds would know that eating chocolate all day is bad for them, they still would though if given the opportunity.

OMG YOU ARE SUCH AN ALCOHOLIC!

He he - couldn't resist!

Though the real question should be how can you afford to be a law student and afford champagne (I certainly couldn't) I'll resist!

I am no expert, but it strikes me that 1200 calories is a pretty meagre amount. For about 2 weeks now I have been on 1900 cals and exercise 6 times per week. I wouldn't say I hit it hard, but I do at least 30 minutes a day. I really couldn't imagine myself eating much less though, paricularly with the exercise.

When I started I set a plan that I hoped I could stick with. This plan inculded allowing 1700 calories per week for alcohol. Like yourself, I just know I couldn't abstain, so I had to build it in. I worked out that just on diet alone, using the 3500 calorie deficit = 1 pound fat loss that on 1900 cals per day I could lose 1 pound per week including the booze. I am hoping the exercise will get that nearer to 1 1/2 pounds.

There are some pretty useful tools about on this site and others that will help you to calculate your TEDD (forget what it stands for, but it means the amount of cals you need to maintain present weight). Once you know this, you can make a more informed decision as to how many calories you need to knock off to lose a certain amount of fat. I guess the key is to set targets, but to set realistic ones. As someone said earlier, without knowing weight, height etc. It's hard to advise, but as everyone says - slow and steady is the best wayt to go. You have to find a way to enjoy it a little. For me 1200 cals per day would be so difficult and energy sapping that eventually I'd just give up.

Am I unusual?

For me, it's when I am happy with life and content that I put the weight on! It's  when things are miserable that I tend to turn to exercise and healthy living! I generally see it as something to through myself into I guess.

Wow, there are some interesting and well thought out points raised here. I'd like to pick up on a couple if I may.

For a while now, I have been interested in the idea that food producers are deliberately making food addictive. I simply don't know enough about the subject unfortunately. However, there have been times when I have consitently eaten foods that I knew to be awful yet I didn't understand why I was drawn to them (my vice was McD's Quaterpounder). I did wonder if it was the salt, but goodness only knows. What else could be put in food to make it addictive? Is is simply the addition of a particular flavour? or something more?

To what extent the government should intervene to encourage healthy eating, or any other form of healthy living I have never really decided. On the one hand, my liberal views scream that it's for the individual to choose how they live and what they eat and that there should be no intervention in this, yet part of me questions the inconsistency of a government that bans public smoking, bans adverts for alcohol and adds flouride to water supplies (I'm in the UK), yet seems to happily encourage a plethora of incredibly unhealthy food chains and products. Can we honestly say that in the long run, fast food and processed food won't cause as many health problems as smoking or alcohol? As I write this, I wonder if I could eat at fast food outlets every day and adopt a healthy lifestyle in doing so. I doubt it. It seems almost everything in them is bad news. Even the salads.

It strikes me that society moves in trends. Eventually, there will be a sufficiently strong backlash against fast food that we will see a rise in healthy food outlets. Just as smoking now makes you a pariah, alcohol will follow and eventually certain foods - though perhaps not pariah inducing, at least frowned upon. I guess the biggest problem is that a huge amount of people just follow the crowd and seemingly ignore the large volume of educational information out there. My concern is for the millions of kids who are growing up thinking that fast food restaurants are the norm and should be visited at every available opportunity. When I was a kid, the peer pressure was all about trainers, but not going to McDonalds makes you weird nowadays! I work as a lawyer specialising in child law. It seems that in almost every case I see someone asked what they do when exercising contact with their kids, the answer is take them to McDonalds. Nobody bats an eyelid! Just once I'd love to hear someone say, we cook a meal together. Of course they also say he/she plays on the Playstation, when I want to hear about trips to the park but that's a different story!

I lost just under a stone last year on the slim fast plan. That was with a bigger dinner than they suggest and normal eating on the weekends. I must have been on it for about 6-8 weeks. The problem for me was that it was unsustainable. It's such a dull way of feeding. I just enjoy food too much, so I much prefer my 1900 diet. Eminently do-able, and with the help of this site, I have fun looking for new different foods.

Weight Loss Wine anyone?? May 15 2008

My biggest problem with wine is knowing where to find out how many calories is in it. None of the labels seem to say it and there is a huge variance in what people believe to be the general calorie count.
