| due to arthritis, I can't do high impact aerobics. Is the tape high or low impact? I sounds like something I might try.

| I have an am/pm stretch tape put out by Gaim. The am stretch is 25 minutes long and really warms up all your muscles. I have a bad back, and also suffer from the lower back pain if I'm not loose when I start, so I do this tape before I start working out. I know it's long, but it also has some ab toning in it:)

| Fitness | Anyone with Fibromyalgia? | Apr 18 2006 23:35 (UTC) |

| I have been diagnosed with fibermyalgia. It can be just a 'junk' diagnosis that doctors use when they don't know what else to call chronic pain, but now there are some more tests that can help get a real diagnosis. As it was explained to me, if the muscles were dissected and examined nothing is wrong with them (in that sense) the problem is that the nerve endings are continually firing pain messages out. So I was told to exercise in spite of the pain (not the case if there is another source of the pain) because the pain messages are in essence, not real. Not that your pain isn't real, but the muscle is not really stressed or in trouble. So I've been doing my best to ignore the pain and work out and the pain has actually lessened. I walk every day, about 5 miles, do yoga, which helps the muscle pain, and have started doing core secrets. I work out first thing in the morning because of the fatigue in the evenings.

| Fitness | Anyone doing Core Secrets? | Apr 10 2006 04:46 (UTC) |
|
| I've been doing core secrets for about 2 months. I love it. I started losing inches around my waist immediately. My one suggestion...if you order the program by phone or online you are automatically signed up to receive more tapes in the make every 4-6 weeks. I didn't want to hassle with that, so I bought mine at Target. You pay a little more, but you don't end up with charges every few weeks. Also, if you really like it and want more tapes you can order those one at time when you are ready.

| Fitness | how do I build, not just tone/firm leg/calf muscle? | Mar 11 2006 06:49 (UTC) |

| If you stand on the edge of a stair or step so that your heels can dip down slightly, then raise yourself up onto tip toe you will work the calf muscle. (You can use a handrail when you start out if you have trouble balancing.) If you can do more than a few sets of 10 of these without getting the muscle tired, try doing one leg at a time. These calf raises are life a machine at my gym, of course there you can add weight onto your shoulders with the machine, you could try hand weights on your shoulders at home to add to the work. | |||

| I have to add to the Olive Garden comments. You know you can order their dishes with the sauce on the side. I know alfredo sauce is HORRIBLE but you can get the Chicken alfredo, sauce on the side, again put half in a to go container, and then I just use little bits of the sauce. With eating so healthy lately a little goes a long way cause I don't want it so heavy. Ordering the sauce on the side would make most of their dishes doable I think. (If you can skip the breadsticks.) | |||

| Fitness | How important is the "Fat burn zone" heartrate? | Mar 04 2006 02:02 (UTC) |

| I talked to an exercise physiologist and here is her explanation. Yes, there is a lower exercise zone where you burn more fat (as opposed to carbs) ...however the harder your work out the more total calories you burn, so it ends up that while many of those calories do come from carbs you actually end up burning more fat calories because you are burning more total calories overall. Did that make sense. Basically, she told me you need to work up a good sweat and be going hard enough to be able to talk, but not want to talk. If you are not sweating you need to bump up what you are doing. (Although, if you are really out of shape it takes your body longer to kick into sweat...quick sweating during a workout is a sign of fitness.) A good sweat with not wanting to talk would produce the best fat loss without danger of injury. | |||

| I have back issues and I've found working on the ball is good. You can work out the abs, which helps keep your back strong and healthy, without extra pressure on the back. I found the ab work on the ball actually alleviates the back pain...although you can' beat swimming when your back is acting up. If you look on the activity log, jogging in the water also burns up calories fast. When you start out you can be in deeper water which supports your back, and as you heal move to shallower water for more of a work out. | |||

| Weight Loss | Eating out with friends | Mar 01 2006 20:09 (UTC) |
|
| Twice this week I've had celebrations at restaurants. I checked out their websites before going to see what I could order, deciding ahead of time helps me stay on track once I'm there. I also ate a carton of lowfat yogurt and some fruit on the way to the restaurant to take the edge off. Even with that I knew it was going to be a high calorie evening so I upped my workout some. That worked for me this week, but you can't always be that anal about everything...no point in losing all this weight if you can't occasionally enjoy yourself. I think the guilt is counter-productive. | |||

| My doctor suggested eating a handful of nuts in the morning because they level out your insulin levels and keep you from getting hungry. I eat 12 almonds (80 cal) which also have the same amount of calcium as milk... Then after I exercise I have an egg white omelete and steel cut oatmeal. I try to eat more of my calories in the a.m. and go light in the evenings. | |||

| I had a nutritionist go over my food log..I had been shooting for 40% carbs and she said it really should be a little higher. BUT, not breads etc. She said I should boost it with fruits and veges. The fruits really bump it up, but she said with all the low carb advice people weren't getting enough fruit in their diets. Upping fruit also helps with upping fiber. | |||
| Foods | Oatmeal | Feb 27 2006 05:27 (UTC) |

| I also saw the Alton Brown episode on Oatmeal. I make a big batch of the steel cut oats once a week since it takes so long to cook and put it in a tupperware in the fridge. It's great reheated in the microwave. My family loves it and I'm now having to make extra. A friend of mine who is a nutritionist said that there are new studies being done on the cholesterol lowering properties of cinnamon and that I should get a 1/4 tsp a day, so I add it to the oatmeal. | |||
