Weight Loss Ditching The SCALE! May 28 2008
20:02 (UTC)
3

I don't even own a scale.

I actually really don't care what I weigh, as long as I look good and go down in clothes sizes.  I suppose that's how I measure how I'm doing.

For me, being a little taller and hiding my weight pretty well, I always have weighed more than other people, though I look a lot smaller.  So weight doesn't really concern me; rather it's how good I look.

That being said, I was at a friend's house over the weekend and she had a scale.  So I weighed myself.  Turns out I've lost 15 pounds in the past few months (since the last time I weighed myself), and so I was actually pretty happy.

I just couldn't be obsessive about how very small the scale moves on a daily basis.

As far as the slowing down of one's metabolism, wouldn't weight lifting and other exercise combat the problem as well?

I have to be honest, logging my calories/exercise on this website has worked wonders for me.

Before eating snacks, I tend to think to myself 'Ugh.  Do I really want to log this????' And I also find that logging my exercise is a form of positive reinforcement that makes me get my rump to the gym.  I just LOVE adding an extra 400-500 calories to my 'burn meter.'

Kind of dorky, but y'know. Working for me.

I eat Kashi Golean Crunch for breakfast every morning, as some others have already suggested.  I didn't like it at first, but now I love it!

I think the key is to measure out the cereal.  I eat the suggested serving size of one cup, and that is PLENTY enough for me.  Usually I top it w/ a couple of strawberries, which have very few calories, and it's very filling!!!

how about going in the morning before work, if going after work doesn't fit into your schedule?

before i started law school and had a "real" job, i used to feel the same way. i'd just be too TIRED after work to go to the gym.  so i started going earlier, around 6-ish.  i know, i know, it seems SO EARLY, but going to the gym is definitely something you have to make a priority.

i hate going to the gym more than anyone in the world, but interestingly enough ...

today i have a super busy day w/ classes strewn throughout the day, as well as a TON of things i have to get accomplished otherwise. and the thought that was running through my head most of the morning was, "hmmm, how can i fit my gym-time into today?!???' three months ago i would've said "screw it. too busy."

it was a pretty cool feeling.

I had a so-so day yesterday.

Was rushed and had to skip breakfast.

Lean Cuisine for lunch.

15 Kashi Tasty Little Crackers for afternoon/before gym snack.

9 Cheddar Cheese Rice Cakes for after gym snack.

Spinach, Apple, Strawberry, Grape, Feta, Walnut, Raisin salad and small piece of chicken for dinner.

Pudding cup for dessert.

Eh, added up to around 1300 calories.  Should've eaten more veggies/fruit throughout the day, though.

I usually work out around 4 or 5 PM.

It makes me not as hungry at dinnertime; plus, if I eat something bad for me, I KNOW it takes away from all the work I put in at the gym.

I'm still trying to get motivated, so this is the first time I've checked out the forum.

I joined this website about a week ago, overeater.  And I must say, the motivation and support I'm getting from the people in this community is pretty astounding.  Plus, it kind of holds me accountable, and, at the same time, I can see what other people are struggling with.

You should poke around here.  I'm sure you'll find the inspiration, too.

EEP tanning beds are SO BAD FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!

I forget the percentage, but much, much, much worse than regular sunlight.

Plus, haven't you seen those older women who've exposed themselves too much to sunlight/tanning beds and they're now all leathery? NOT HOT.

I'm like the whitest chick on the block, and it's BEAUTIFUL :)

I lived in LA until a few months ago (now in San Diego).  My boyfriend's parents live in Vegas, so we'd make that trip often.

If you've never been to Vegas, staying on the strip may be more of an "experience" for you.  Caesar's is nice, but if you're going to shell out the dough, I'd check out the Venetian (my all-time favorite), the Bellagio, and the Wynn (newest one, but probably a little more pricey).

The thing is, though, gambling on the strip is only fun like the first time you do it.  The tables are seriously pricey, and I never really see anyone win.  It's much more fun at the off-the-strip casino; plus, that's where the locals go, so you're more likely to run into some "true Vegans."  Plus, some of the shows at those off-the-strip casinos are free, and sometimes they're really good.  The Red Rock Casino had a good one a while back w/ a mind reader.

Also, don't forget there's TONS to do in Vegas besides go to casinos.  The Red Rock desert is beautiful to hike in, and that's where I spent my birthday!  There's also the Valley of Fire which is fun to hike, as well as Mount Charleston.

Eh, I could go on.  Contact me if you're all that interested ;)

I know what you mean.

A couple of my friends are drink-every-night/party-every-weekend types.  I was invited out this past weekend, and I declined each invitation, which was really difficult!  However, I think it's really important for me to get used to eating healthy before I really start testing myself by going out.

I'll get there, but I think it will be a few weeks.

Hmmm, yeah the "rewarding yourself w/ food" is a point well taken.  I've tended to do that in the past.

I agree w/ you, though.  I think it's important to have a cheat day to remind yourself there's a reason you're wanting to lose weight.  My dad used to tell me that you only live once, so you might as well enjoy it!  And I'd like to think that I don't want to NOT eat foods that I find so deliciously yummy just b/c I'm trying to lose weight!

That's a good idea about portioning the "cheater" foods.  I hadn't thought of that.  I think I'll do that on my next cheat day on Sunday.

Hmmmm, Sunday can't get here fast enough! lol.

Weight Loss I have to increase my calories :-( May 19 2008
18:13 (UTC)

I agree about this stuff getting into your head.  I used to not care whatsoever about calorie consumption, what I ate, how I exercised, etc.  But now that I'm actually trying to lose weight, it's pretty consuming.  I guess since eating is such a big part of one's lifestyle, and also a social part of our lifestyle, it can really begin to mess w/ you.

I am trying to eat more calories than 1200 since I exercise so frequently.  It's difficult to do, and obviously it strikes most of us as counter-intuitive.  What I'm doing is trying to increase 300 calories by actually eating stuff that's good for me: a couple of apples, oranges, etc ... you know the deal.  That way I convince myself that I'm doing the right thing, and I don't feel so guilty about it.  Plus, increasing your fruit intake does nothing but good things for your body!!!

Good luck, and let me know what you're eating to increase the calories.  I'm always open to new ideas! :)

This is my new favorite salad:

Makes 2 servings

Ingredients 6 cups spinach 1/2 granny smith apple 1/4 cup raisins 1/4 cup walnuts 1 1/2 ounces feta cheese 1/2 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 clove garlic 1/2 tsp dijon mustard 1 1/2 tbs extra virgin olive oil 3 strawberries Directions
  1. Assemble the salad:

  2. In a gallon sized ziplock bag or medium bowl, add the romaine salad, a chopped granny smith apple, craisins, walnuts and feta cheese.

  3. Make the vinegrette:

  4. In a small bowl, add the balsamic vinegar, garlic clove, dijon mustard, stir, slowly mix in the olive oil, salt and pepper to taste.

  5. I just add the dressing to the bag and shake, then serve.

  6. Note: fresh strawberries also go nicely in this salad.

    What an great post!!!

What I like the most is how GREAT I feel after a workout.  For me, there's nothing like being drenched in sweat, so tired I can hardly walk up the stairs, looking like a royal, sweaty mess!

Mind you, I don't like actually ^doing^ the workout, but the way my body feels afterwards is amazing! Laughing

    Congratulations, odie03!

Yes it's very difficult, especially since my boyfriend still drinks like a rock star!!! I do the same thing though: say to myself 'I'm burning tons of calories! I'm burning tons of calories!'

Yeah, the really cool thing for me so far is being able to actually do OTHER stuff at night.  I used to fall asleep during TV shows at night after a few drinks.  Now, I can actually finish the show or the movie.  PLUS it's been good for studying, too :)

My dogs are my babies.  I have two: a miniature schnauzer who's 4 and a poodle mix who's 6 months.

I love my dogs b/c no matter what sort of rough day I've had, my dogs are always super happy to see me when I get home.  They're such loving creatures, and really, all they want in return is your love.

Dogs take a lot of time, especially young ones.  You have to be prepared to dish out the money too .... my miniature schnauzer was attacked by a Rottwhiler (sp?) a few months back, and it cost over $500 to get her fixed up.

    Thanks, guys, for the support!

Today is day #3 w/o alcohol, and so far, I'm feeling GREAT.  At least for the time being, I am trying to not be in the "social scene" very much.  I want to try to get a little used to not drinking before really testing myself w/ it being in my face.  That being said, I'm getting a lot of work done in school, which is also a really great thing.

I'm also amazed, as someone above stated, how much more food I can eat if I don't drink.

    You guys are awesome; thanks.

    Hey Opalglassman,

I am new to this website as well.  I am 26 and in the past year I've gained about 25 pounds.  I had a job where I was completely sedentary, and I love to cook and eat.  On top of that, I really like to drink!

I started law school in January and vowed to lose the weight.  I started exercising six days a week and eating better, but I didn't cut out the alcohol until this week.  I still look the same as I did in January, and I'm really hoping it's b/c of the alcohol b/c I feel like I am trying everything!

I sometimes feel the same way you do in front of people.  I know it's me, though.  I feel worse about myself, and I'm really consumed by it at the moment.

So far I really like keeping track 100% of what I put in my mouth.  It really is making me think twice about what I eat.  Also, I didn't realize that some of the foods I eat are so bad for me!

Good luck, and keep the faith! :)
