I bought a Used Polar F11 for 80 bucks on EBay.  It has some great features for everyone from beginners to hardcore, but it's pretty simple to use.  Some good stuff in there for helping guide you through effective workouts.

I've tried the Krusteaz fat free mix, which is a little different than yours.  No yogurt.  Just add water, mix it, and cook.  Easy to make singles like nevis does with this one too.  I'll have to check this out.

I use Silk, and that stuff stays around like army rations.  Think you probably just had a tainted batch.  Don't give up on it.

I always wondered why we drink cows milk.  I'm no veggieveganarian or whoever it is that shuns cows milk like a redheaded dwarf, but doesn't it seem a little quirky?  I mean, we're people right?  Seriously doubt we'll see any job postings for hourly female employees at the people dairy anytime soon.  But nutritionally that would make more sense.

Weight Loss 500 Calorie Deficit: Will it Work? Jun 27 2008

There's also a lot of chatter on here about "starvation mode" and having those days with extra calories, just so your body doesn't think you're starving and have no access to food.  You start burning muscle and other tissues, you get lethargic.  Its just yicky.  Those extra calorie days remind you that you're not starving, and keeps your metabolism attacking where it's supposed to be.  And you get a little reward for doing well all week.   The 500 should probably still count against you, but in the long run you might be better off.  Everyone is different though, so experiment and do what works for you.

I am right there with you.  My company seems to think that cake is the multipurpose food answer to everything that happens in the building.    Retirements, baby showers, promotions, anniversaries. There's big sheet of cake in our conference room just about every day.  Ankle deep in cake.

I eat the strawberries off the top and leave the rest.  Then I scowl at people who look like they're going to ask me why I'm not eating the cake, and they don't ask.  It's kinda fun.

I try to keep a cliff bar in my desk, or some fruit too.  You'd be surprised at how people leave you alone if you're munching on an apple while they're power slamming the refined sugar.  As long as you're stuffing your face with something, they'll accept.

3500 calories burned is what it takes to lose 1 pound of fat. If you keep a deficit of 500 a day for 5 days, and 1000 for 2, that's 4500 calories a week.  This ends up being 1.28 pounds per week, which is well within the bounds of healthy weight loss (generally 2-3lbs/week is the max they recommend).  If you stick to this schedule you should theoretically lose 30 lbs in 23.5 weeks or so.

If you do this, make sure you're eating at least 1200 calories a day minimum so you body can do things like breath and blink and sweat and think, important stuff.  This is a good plan, good luck!

Fitness Swimming. Jun 24 2008
23:17 (UTC)

Swimming laps, even at a slow pace is great exercise.  You use just about every major muscle goup, and it's very low impact.  The burn log says:

light lap swimming you get 623-712 calories per hour.

Vigourous effort will get you 890 calories per hour.

Leisurely (not lap swimming) gets 523 calories per hour.  I suspect these are things like walking around, playing, basically moving around in the water.

Just do what you're comfortable with, and build up your length and activity level.  I swam competitively in high school and I was skinny as a rail, and our coach made us eat constantly.

Pregnancy & Parenting DH involvement in pregnancy- your experiences? Jun 22 2008

How about a relatively new dad's perspective?  Everyone's right here in one way or another.  Having a pregnant wife is absolutely mind boggling for us.  Up to this point of all the decisions and paths we've taken this is by far the most all encompassing life changing.  We worry about your health, the baby's health, if we'll be good role models and parents.  Circumcision or not?  Names?  Baby proofing.  How in the heck can I bear the expenses?  Can I maintain a stable income stream?  It all seems like so much.  So in some ways, I can see how some guys can sorta shut down.  When I was in the delivery room, I was in shock...the doctor had to ask me 3 times to cut the cord.

But, some of your DH's behavior is a little extreme I think.  I not only change poop diapers, I changed the first one (The most disgusting by far).  I massaged my wife when she was pregnant (two tennis balls in a sock works great).  I cook and clean when I can, and I try not to make a mess when I can't.  I went to as many appointments as I possibly could.  Making you walk home is crap, he should be cradling you two like you're the most precious things he has.  It's hard work, for both of you.  The status quo no longer exists, your lives are now defined by a new set of rules, and you BOTH need to buy into them.

I don't have a great answer for how to fix this, but I do think you need to have a conversation.  Just ask him to listen to you, lay out everything you're feeling while he keeps his mouth closed.  Don't ask him to respond, just ask him to listen and think.  And don't wait for the baby to be born or start walking and talking to see if he really gets it.  Try taking him to a Lamaze class, not only will it ease the shock of labor when the time comes, but it will give you something to bond over regarding the baby, and it'll give him some perspective on his role.  Hang in there, remember he loves you, and try not to stress too much.  I'm sure you guys will do great.

And beer makes you gassy too.  Don't try to deny it.  Empty calories, no nutrition.  So if you plan to drink you have to starve to make room for the calories, and then you don't get enough calcuim and vitamin K, and then you get carpel tunnel syndrome or the flesh eating bacteria virus.

Just be sensible.  Plan for the extra calories, burn a little more, and you'll be ok.

I have a gym at my college, but i just use the weights because i can get aerobics on the basketball court or playing Flag Football, Ultimate Frisbee and so on. So you may not see them on those machines because men get aerobic excersises elsewhere.

Come on people, men use cardio machines, they lift weights, they run they swim they jog.  And news flash...are you sitting down....women do the same things.  Go to the gym, work out, and stop worrying about what other people are doing.  This whole thread is silly.  This is the whole reason there are women's only gyms.

Foods V8 Jun 21 2008

V8 is better than nothing, but there's a couple of negatives.  It's high in sodium (even the reduced sodium kind).  And with liquified veggies, you miss all the good roughage and fiberous materials that help clean you out.  But if you wouldn't be eating them at all, drink a V8, just drink lots of water to flush out all that sodium, otherwise you'll retain water like a sponge and your boyfriends class ring will squeeze your pointer finger purple.

Sorry I'm late checking in.  In-laws are in town.  So mexico damage isn't quite as bad as I thought, I knew I probably still carried a deficit, or at least maintained, but losing momentum after a solid month is tough.  Motivated again though, so we'll see how it goes.

Weight this week is:

195.2---> which is .8 lb lost this week, and 15.8 lbs since I started.

Congrats Rocky, 3lbs in a week is fantastic!  Keep up the awesome week!

All female gym.  That's funny.

I use the eliptical, more muscle groups engaged means more calories burning, it's a better weight loss and cardio exercise than running, which I hate.  I don't even talk to people at the gym either, I'm not there to meet people and I'm definitely not there to judge them based on any criteria much less what machine they use.  Working out is the same way I view religion and sexuality.   Just don't affect me with what you're doing, period and have at it.

Original Post by rocky_:

ooo thats a really great tip.  I tend not to drink enough water anyways and find myself always hungry, so I am going to try your water trick and see how it goes.  I have a pretty good imagination so I'll close my eyes really hard and pretend its something delicious!  I am also definitely going to take your suggestion and really ease myself into it.  I think I am going to try and do intervals when I go to the gym next (because I hear thats the best way to zap off actual body fat).  I'll probably only stay on for 15-20mins again at a steady walk to ease myself in, but then throw in some light jogging for like 15 seconds a few times throughout and slowly add in more jogging time and for longer over the weeks.  I have never been a runner though...do you have any good tips from your training days on how to properly run to help with cramping and getting out of breath?

So should we maybe do weigh-ins here every week (like fridays)?  The accountability of writing it to someone I think would help me stay motivated.  And, I like to hear how great you are doing!

Cheers.

I think Friday weigh ins are great, we'll start this week.  My first tip is that if you don't like running, just don't do it.  You don't want exercise to be dreadful, find a few things you like to do and mix it up.  I swim, do elipticals, jog a little.  Keep yourself from getting bored.  For cramping and shortness of breath, the best thing is to start slowly and work your way up, even if you have to walk at increasing speeds for two weeks.  Drink lots of water and breathe from your belly not your chest if that makes sense.

Splitrail, you're more than welcome.  Sounds like you have a great start already.  I think I may have started to get some apnea symptoms as well at aroun 215-220.  It was one of the things that scared me straight really.

Octopus, welcome too, you've been doing a superb job too it looks like, keep it up.

And now for me.  I've fallen off the map for 3 days, because that's literally what I did.  I was in Mexico for a three day business trip, and off the wagon I went.  I didn't binge, and I watched my portions closely, but there was no way for me to count or avoid some things.  I took a bunch of cliff bars with me, which saved me for breakfasts, but other than that it was rough.  Good thing is work was much more physical and much longer than normal every day, and I was able to keep from over doing it.  Got on the scale when I got back, and there were negligible initial results, think I managed to maintain, but holy crap tough trip.

Weight Loss Serious weirdness... any insight? Jun 16 2008
00:01 (UTC)

Water Water Water.  You're retaining it, you're probably a little dehydrated with all the added activity, and check your sodium intake.  Drink 2 liters of water throughout the day, and the scales will balance this out.  If you're maintaining a deficit, you're not getting fatter, you're just hoarding water because your body really thinks it's not going to get anymore for a while.  Give it what it needs and you'll be all good.

Good luck!

Weight Loss (edit: removed post) Jun 15 2008
21:59 (UTC)

Your math adds up to 2109 calories burned short of 1 pound.  You're probably pretty far from affecting changes on most scales (ones not precise down to fractions of pounds.)

If you've truly carried over any calorie deficit, the weight gain you're experiencing could be a few different things:  the weight of food in your bowels that hasn't worked itself through yet (sorry Embarassed), it could be retained water from dehydration and high sodium intake (if your pee is yellow and you eat a lot of salt, your body will hold on to any moisture it can and you'll gain water weight).  If you're getting close to your cycle it can cause this too.  Don't sweat it, drink some water, maybe look for ways to increase your deficit (more exercise or less calories - if you're still above at least 1200 total every day).

You'll be ok, promise :)

That's the key, ease yourself into everything, start out with what you're comfortable and turn it up when it feels like it's time to.  Start off on the treadmill walking at a brisk pace for 15 minutes (like 3.5-4.0mph).  Do that for a week.  The next week, walk at 4 for 20 minutes, do that for a week.  Then then next week, jog at a very light pace for 15 minutes (4.5-5).  Then work yourself up from there.  If you need more than a week at a certain pace, take it, if you need less then move on.  Get your body used to moving before you send it through the ringer, it'll be much more pleasant in the long run.  I used to run 5 miles a day when I was in the military, it blows my mind because I'd die right now if I tried it, but that just shows you that your body adapts.

Whenever I get a craving in the evening, I fill up my liter bottle full of water and sip on it until it's gone.  This takes care of the tactile motion of putting something in my mouth and it helps fill me up a little.  You can put a little crystal light in there too.

My newest desert: diet chocolate cherry dr. pepper, it was limited so I guess they might not be making it anymore, but OMG.  It was like drinking a chocolate sunday!

Foods oatmeal question (also a BM question, you've been warned....) Jun 15 2008
14:44 (UTC)

What's your water intake like?  I eat an oatmeal concoction about twice a week that's loaded with fiber, it's um,  cleansing to say the least, but its super good.  The thing is I try to drink at least a liter of water at least an hour after I eat any high fiber meal.  That fiber will clean you out, but you have to keep it wet to keep it moving. Lots and lots of water.

Weight Loss Water needs, general information... Jun 15 2008

I agree, drink till your pee looks the same going out as it did going in.  You CAN get too much water, it's called water intoxication or hyponatermia and your cells literally drown at the cellular level.  The good news is is that you have to drink a lot of water in a short amount of time, 5 liters plus, and even then it's based on your kidney health.

Here's a link with more info.

http://kidneydiseases.about.com/od/kidneydise ases/a/h2ointoxication.htm

I have a liter bottle that I fill and drain 2-3 times a day, throughout the entire day.  That's way more than the 8 glasses, but it helps regulate sodium levels and keep waterweight fluctuations down for me.  I always feel much better when I'm well hydrated too, and there are some studies out there that link hydration to metabolism rates, google it if you're interested.

Drink Up!

Congratulations on your success so far.  The key is to stay motivated, and don't battle the scale, remember you're looking for long term results so don't let short term fluctuations get you down.  Get a plan and stick to it, and you'll do great.

I think the consensus around here is that you should be taking in at least 1200 calories a day to maintain your basic body functions (the female number).  Stay there or close to there, and take care of your body.  We're just nursing them to where they should be and not shocking the crap out of them.

Good Luck!

Hey, welcome to CC.  I guess we have made a little group here, you're more than welcome.  As far as tips go...here's basically what I'm doing right now.  I plan my exercise and food so that I hit a deficit of at least 1300-1700 calories a day.  It's pretty aggressive, but I'm on about a 3 pound a week average, which is on the high end of the recommendation.  Use the counter, it's actually really effective.  I make my lunches and plan my breakfasts the day before, and then just eat sensibly at night when I get home.  My wife cooks relatively healthy meals, and I just manage the portions at dinner.  This is a simple plan for me (simple for me is good), and it's been working well for me.

So far I've only been doing cardio in the mornings, 20 minutes to an hour.  I try and burn at least 500 calories in the morning before going to work.  I'm going to throw in weights here soon to balance this out and keep my metabolism running.  You can do this, it's not that hard.  There are tough moments, but the results are SO worth it.  Good luck!

This sounds more than reasonable to me.  Even if you shrink or negate your deficit tonight, remember that everything here is cumulative.  One night of treating yourself is not going to kill your progress, especially if you plan ahead like you are.  Think about shaving a few more calories in the next couple of days too, nothing drastic, but you can erase anything out of spec for you by the end of next week, and still have a great time tonight.  Have fun!

Hang in there, plain and simple.  I felt terrible when I first started this, I looked at a picture of my self and went "oh my god, what did I do to myself."  I was so self conscious and not confident at all.  I've been CCing for a month now, and I'm down 15 pounds.  My belts don't fit, my face is skinnier.  It's been hard work so far, but besides actually losing weight, I've starting feeling some pride about my strength of will, my ability to control what happens to me.  Now when I sit down to eat with friends or my wife, I'm not self conscious about following my plan, I'm fiercely proud of myself for doing it, and I'm proud of the results.  As you do better and better, let yourself feel good for reaching your goals.  Don't worry about your friend eating 4 pieces of pizza, she may be thin as a rail, but she's not as healthy as you are, and she doesn't have the same control in her life like you are.  You made a choice to be better, to live better, and now you are.  Good job to you, keep it up, you're giving yourself something you most certainly deserve.  Smile

Yeah, that estimate is a moving target, I think it looks at your trend and then calculates from there.  I ignore it and concentrate on the deficit totals it calculates to match your goal date.  If you stay on that track you'll be good.

Here's my update:  15 pounds straight up lost in my 4th week, I'm on the last (I mean first) hole in the old belt.  I was shocked when I went to tighten it a notch and there was no more real-estate there.

My weight's been fluctuating a bit too, but I concentrate on the big picture.  Even though I weigh every day, my "official" day is every friday.  Thats a good way to rationalize the water weight bumps I see during the week.  Gotta admit I'm pretty stoked, I feel better too.  I just gave blood and my blood pressure and cholesterol are way down.  My next mini goal is 190, the weight I got married at.  6 pounds to go, hopefully a week and a half to two weeks.

Sorry for the book, but It always helps me to write things down, it becomes permanent.  Enjoy your strawberries!
