| Weight Loss | weight loss whilst being ill | Aug 19 2009 11:26 (UTC) |

Hello, yes this happened to me about a month ago when I had the swine flu (oink oink) - was the sickest I've ever been with 40 degree C temps etc. I couldn't eat for three days (had a bowl of chicken soup twice) and struggled to eat for couple days after. I lost about 3kg and couldn't believe how great my thighs looked and how flat my tum was etc etc. So I freaked out about eating again as I didn't want to regain the lost weight. I decided to up my cals slowly and only eat healthy foods. So even while eating healthy and slowly upping my exercise when I could, I thought I would surely maintain it. Slowly but surely it came back. I still don't think I put it ALL back, but I was pretty upset. I did all the right things- no junk, not much salt etc but my body obviously wasn't happy and I regained a little. So, my advice is to enjoy the feeling while it lasts, and don't be too upset if you put back some of it. Eat healthy as your body may go into storage mode once you begin to eat normal again, keep salt to a minimum too. You would of lost a bit of muscle so try to keep up strength exercises when you can. I did lots of leg lifts etc asI didn't have enough energy for much cardio for quite a while. Good luck !! |

| Foods | DECAF coffee and caffeine.....help? | Aug 19 2009 10:23 (UTC) |

Hi, as far as I know decaf coffee usually still has very small amounts of caffiene. I had to stop caffiene in my diet for a while and found that info on the net. I still have decaf coffee often and I never feel the effects of any caffiene that it may still contain. I would say it has less caffiene than a hot cocoa. Try and go for the natural water decaffeinated coffee as it doesn't use any chemicals to remove the caffiene, only water. It's soo much better for you and not that much more cost wise.

| Weight Loss | Clean Eating Challenge! | Aug 18 2009 05:43 (UTC) |

Hello, I too want to join the clean eating party! I'm a 26 yr old Aussie mum of two beautiful kids. I eat healthily and exercise alot, but still my body is a fat-making machine! I really only want to lose about 3-5 kg. I have eaten very clean in the past, and after a few days you do get used to it. So I know I can do it again. My main issue has always been sugar-chocolate and desserts. I will allow myself a sugary treat once a week. Once a week is something to look forward to on craving days! Ok, I'll keep you posted |

Sorry to say, but it is probably the pill. If you are eating the proper amount of calories suggested by CC, and exercising, eating good foods- I think it's the pill. My personal experience with birth control, it made me balloon, took months after going off it to lose the fat. It was mainly fat. Yuck! Hormone birth control methods don't agree with everyone. |

| Fitness | Burn more fat when walking | Jul 24 2009 00:12 (UTC) |

I have to say that I have killed myself in the gym by going hard at cardio, running, elliptical, body attck classes etc. I do also weight train, and pilates etc. I find that I notice the most difference to my thigh fat- which is the bane of my existance- when I do really long walks with the kids in the pram, regularly. I walk at a fast steady pace but not to the point of not being able to get words out. So I agree with chocomilk- not everyone responds the same. In fact, some people like me who have high cortisol levels and stress easily, can actually find high intensity exercises stress the body more which then in turn just raises cortisol levels higher making it virtually impossible to lose fat. Some people are more responsive to gentler exercises as walking does lower stress levels.

Personally, I think a good strong yoga session can definitely be a workout. I think if you go to your max and are concentrating and trying to use all muscles in the body to hold each pose, it certainly will tire you out! It really does depend though on how fluent and flowing the yoga is, some classes are really soft and don't work the body hard. I usually do a 40-50 minute walk after yoga, it seems to top it off perfectly. |

I really feel for you, it must feel like you're trapped in this vicious cycle with no light at the end of the tunnell. My two thoughts are this. First off, you need to get not just your thyroid tested, but all your hormones. This includes estrogen, progesterone, etc. If you are not on anything for your thyroid, why not get an iodine supplement? It certainly won't hurt. (I think the medical system in America is disgusting. I am in Australia and a single mum to two, I can go to the Doctors for free, my medicines are heavily discounted. Mind you, when you go to specialists, you have to expect to pay the price. Getting all my hormones tested cost me a fair bit, but I got nearly half of it back.) The next avenue you might consider is going to a Naturopath with a good reputation or even a Chinese Herbalist that incorporates acupuncture. They are really great at finding the things that doctors overlook. Sometimes though, it takes a few before you find the right Naturopath. Because your body has been through alot, I also tend to agree with someone above that said you're body probably needs to heal from the abuse first. You may have to try and get your head around putting on some weight at first. It will be very hard to accept. Once you've given your body proper nutrition and the amount of calories it needs, it will adjust-even if it is a slow process. You will be able to lose weight in the proper way, without the stress of starving (been there) and it will be for good. Getting your cals to 1200 is a start. ( I won't preach to you as I'm still trying to up mine to 1500) Try and get your cals up to where they should be. I think maybe keep doing your weight training to build your muscles which will in turn help your metabolism and maybe walking. The aim is to not stress your body out, give it a break. Eat well, weight train, walk, you shouldn't need to do mad cardio untill your body is ready for fat loss. In other words, don't go cardio crazy because you see yourself putting on weight. Know that it is temporary and once you heal, you will be able to lose again safely. You can't live on 600 cals for the rest of your life, it will be miserable. Do the hard work now, so you can set your self up for life. Good luck, I wish you the best!

Honestly, if I were you, I would get off it. I have tried different pills over the last 8 years and not one has agreed with me. Yes, I gave them time to work but the side effects were terrible. My hormones were so whacked that my emotions were all over the place and it also brought back some anxiety. It's just not worth it. The hard thing is finding contraception that doesn't contain any hormones, it sux being a female sometimes!!! But I definitely empathise, it feels horrible not being in control of yourself! Good luck with your decision, only you know how you're body is being affected, try and listen to it, hang in there!! |

Well, sorry to say this but YES. I went on Mirena which is the same hormone but much much smaller doses. My appetite didn't increase, but I put on 3kg in 3 months. Nothing stopped me gaining weight. I cut calories and exercised like a mad woman to no avail. It went mostly to my thighs and I felt terrible. I eventually got the thing removed and SLOWLY lost some weight. But since then, I have not had a regular period and it has messed up my hormones so much so that I am on a special cream to try balance them. So yeah, some people are fine, others like me are not. |

I would definitely add some nuts and maybe just a little avocado. The trick is just to have small amounts as they are high incalories but your body will thank you. I would also try and add a little more protein. Even lentils are great. |

Just thought I'd mention that I had the same problem with losing weight and had my hormones tested. Turns out I have very low progestrone and high estrogen which makes it nearly impossible to lose weight. Infact you continue to put on weight. So maybe get some tests done to rule it out? |

Haha, these replies are hilarious!! Ok, so maybe I feel a little silly for even thinking for a moment that she only works out two hrs a day and eats whatever! That was pretty stupid hey! It's true what's been said, if she did say that she worked out alot BUT ate very little, she would be attacked by everyone! BUT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH WATCHING THE ODD OPRAH SHOW!!!!! We're like a month behind here in Australia and some shows are entertaining, some are soooooooooo boring! So there!!!! p.s. I decided to stick with bodyweight exercises like push-ups, dips, lunges and squats etc. |

Mmmm, very interesting. Thanks for the opinions. Gwenyth went on to say she eats WHATEVER she wants and doesn't cut out any food. That's why she works out 2 hours a day, 6 days a week. BUT, I do not believe that someone like her eats junk food etc. I just get so sick of all the contradictions when it comes to training. I find that I do have trouble losing body fat, even when I'm training with weights (heavy as I can) 3 times weekly aswell as HIIT and lots of walks and cardio- the muscle builds underneath (I can feel it!) but it just makes me look bigger and kind of 'full' or bulky because the fat is sitting on top. And Yes, that's with a quite a calorie deficit. I recently lost a couple of kilos from the flu (muscle but also fat) and have not regained anything back. So I thought I need to start lifting again to preserve my muscle mass but I am still so tired and low on energy. Will pilates help? I have a nasal infection now and alot of congestion on my chest so I have to take it real easy. I'm also undereating a little, because I'm not exercising yet and haven't quite regained my appetite. By the way, I love the little conversations in this thread, it's great!!! |

Hi, Just wanted to thank you for your reply. I do agree about trying to get back on track health-wise, I'm still quite fatigued and muscles feel weak. I have been eating small amounts of healthy foods only when I'm hungry and trying to beat to scary feelings of my body just hoarding every morsel of food. Thanks guys! |

Hey, Pretty much all the food you described were of a high GI. You really need to balance it out with a protein or a low GI food. Especially breakfast, make it porridge or muesli instead of cereal OR add an egg or two after your cereal. It makes a huge difference! |

Hi, I don't think there is anything wrong with lipo, infact I want to get some lipo on my legs- saddlebags. I didn't know it was painful! How painful was it? Was the pain just localised to the surgery area? Does it look even? Good for you, I hope it gives you the confidence to feel your best. |

| Weight Loss | Advice that REALLY works for those on the 130-110's!!!!! | Jun 25 2009 01:37 (UTC) |

Sorry guys, I'm in the same boat, so I can't really offer much advice! But I am really keen on hearing some success stories! Tomatotamata, I have 2 kids and know what you mean about the stomach area. I have heard that dry skin brushing really helps tighten the skin as it gets the circulation going etc. I try and do it before my shower. You need a natural bristle not too hard, not too soft. Start at the soles of your feet and sweep upwards, legs, back, stomach in circular motion clockwise, arms-fingers to shoulders then chest towards the heart.

| Weight Loss | Is anyone using the Cheat Your Way Thin program? | Jun 24 2009 00:41 (UTC) |

Hi mojosmile, Well, I have lost a couple of cm mainly from my stomach/waist. I only have 3-4 kg to lose, so it's very slow. Weight wise, no, not really, but I do prefer to go by measurements. I do think it would work better if I didn't have other issues (hormone imbalance). Message me if you want details, I can give you a run down of the program

Hi, Yes, I bought this diet about a year ago. Basically you eat 4 meals a day that consist of 'protein' foods and 'carb' foods ( you select from a list and the generator makes themn into meals). So for example: Meal 1- cottage cheese and almonds Meal 2- fish and salami pieces meal 3- cheese and chicken meal 4- prawns (or shrimp in American terms!) and cashews. the meal combinations are weird and unsavoury! But it really is not maintainable. There's only so long you can follow it. And yes, as soon as I stopped, I gained it all back and I was eating healthy. I was hungry on this plan. Honestly, don't bother, it's a waste of money, you can look up 'carb cycling' in google and it's basically the same principle. Good luck |

| Fitness | would LOVE some advice! : ) | Jun 20 2009 01:42 (UTC) |

Hi everyone and thankyou so much for your opinions. I know it sounds wrong, but I definitely am not over eating. Possibly under eating? Here's a quick run-down on my diet. Monday (I do weights and HIIT, and elliptical) B- omelette- (1 whole, I white) with spinach and sprinkle of low fat cheese. S- post workout protein drink L- green veges and seared chicken. s- handful of nuts, cappachino on skim. D- fish and salad. After dinner I might have a small protein bar. I eat like that for another day or two, then I start adding good carbs like muesli for breakfast, a little sweet potato/pumpkin at dinner, yoghurt and fruit. Then on Sunday I eat chocolates and give myself a little break. But I do not ever go over 2000 on that day. I exercise all through the week with one or two days off. I do not usually consume more than 1300 if that. I was undereating for a while (under 1000) when my marriage broke up, then I went camping and had dessert every night for a week and put on 4 kg so quickly and it was all fat. I just can't seem to make it budge. So when I did up my calories camping, my body just stored it all away, I'm afraid of that happening again. Thanks again for your imput! |

| Weight Loss | Low Carb | Jun 10 2009 11:11 (UTC) |
28 |
Hi, I do believe in moderating your carbs and think that low carb can be good. My experiences with low carb are exactly what people warned me about. I could stand the crankiness and irritablility and did really well for the first few weeks-even though it was very hard. My problem was that as soon as I introduced carbs back, the weight flew on and I think I actually put on mostly fat. Now I did it slowly, and only ate LOW GI good healthy carbs in very small portions because I didn't want to put on a lot of water weight. I was also exercising ( weights and cardio). So I put back any weight I lost within 2 weeks and it was pure fat. As I said, I did it the right way but obviously my body wasn't happy being so restricted. So now I cycle my days and I think it is more effective for ME. I do 3 days low carb, 3 days low GI ( still keeping proteins up), and on the last day it is my 'cheat' day. So that was my experience, I know people do lose weight on low carb but I don't feel it's maintainable. Good luck! |
