I suppose I was going to say something similar to the above posters. When I need to get back on track I set a goal by saying: "I challenge myself to eat healthy for the next week straight." That usually gets me back on the wagon by the end of the week. If the wagon is a bit wobbly at the week's end, rechallenge yourself. |

Other than getting enough sleep, eating right, and staying hydrated, I find that I work best with a set routine. It's not enough for me to plan on going to the gym on a specific schedule, I like to have a specific training program I am working on. I don't "wing it" at the gym. Basically, if I skip out on a day, I screw up my training schedule for the entire week. That's usually enough motivation to avoid skipping. However, if I'm having a really bad day, I just shift my mon-wed-fri routine to tue-thur-sat. So, I usually get home from the office around 5:30pm, relax and munch on some fruit and a sandwich for a bit, and head to the gym around 7 for an hour. I try to get to bed around 10:30pm during the week because I'm usually up around 6:30am to make breakfast before work. By the way, for people who have kids, many gyms have day care facilities; atleast, the one I go to does. I imagine it's pretty common. |

If you stick to miso soup and salmon, tuna, or yellowtail sashimi, you can manage a really healthy sushi meal. Once you start adding in rolls with cream cheese or mayo, deep fried tempura, and rice, you have to be a bit tighter with your portions. |

| Fitness | The elusive female 6-pack | Jul 11 2008 18:13 (UTC) |

I would have to say, that a woman with a six-pack is hot. I've seen ONE woman at my gym with a six-pack and she is a knock-out and a half, and it's because her body is reminiscent of a greek goddess. Now, to be fair I don't like the look some female figure atheletes go for with rippling muscles. It turns me off if they look like body builders; I prefer a slim and lean figure. Six-pack however? Go for it, that's hot. |

Well, I finished my 2nd night and I was able to complete the entire set for all the workouts except for the T-shaped push-up. Doing them at the end of the circuit is tough because my entire body is on fire when I start them. I could only get 10 in (5/side). I bet you could to do the A, B, and C combos in a different order, depending on the night. That might actually be a good idea. That aside, I have no idea how to log this activity. I punched in 30 minutes of moderate weight lifting (closest category I could think of) and it says I burned 142 calories. That's hard to believe. |

aeetheri, How often did you decide to do this workout? The program doesn't seem to recommend a specific weekly schedule, although it does mention you should take one day off per week to rest. I always considered mon, wed, and fri (3 days a week) to be a good fit for me with my schedule, but I imagine you could potentially do this routine 6 days a week. Considering that this is the first intense weight training regimen I've tried in a couple years, my muscles were pretty sore the following evening. I figured I'd take one day off and go back the next day (tonight). I'm not sure if I could have handled it last night. I could potentially do this 5 days a week (mon-fri) once I'm in the swing of things though. |

Funny... I just finished eating Wendy's for lunch. First time in 4 months and I opted for a single cheeseburger and a large fry and drank water instead of soda. Funny how I say "opted" as if I were actually eating well... but it's better than a double cheeseburger with a large coke and fry. Even so... lunch today shot me 300 calories over my usual post-lunch mark. Bit of a cheat day I suppose, guess I better get some activity in and eat a smaller dinner. |

While I've never been obese, I use to have a habit of eating when I was bored or depressed (I imagine that's not too uncommon for many people). Nowadays I've learned to identify these urges and I catch myself. Hunger doesn't have anything to do with that either, although I suppose if I were bored and very hungry, the two would have a lot of synergy. My main strategy with healthy eating these days is to space out my eating throughout the day to keep my hunger at bay. When I'm starving, it takes more willpower to avoid fast food. If that happens these days, I snag a PB&J sandwich and an apple which is extremely fast and fills me up. |

I had gooey, cheesy, pepperoni pizza this past weekend myself, but I just shrugged it off. It was yummy. I just returned to my regular obsessive calorie counting the next day. Whoopdeedoo if go 1000 calories over once every couple months. Just means I lose 5 pounds a month instead of 5 1/5. Doesn't particularly bother me. :) |

Well, if you looked at a Wendy's double cheeseburger (700 calories):
Total: 700 calories Sounds about right. A large fry and coke are about as many calories as the burger too. That's a lot of calories for a combo meal.

| Foods | How to work protein into my diet... | Jul 01 2008 17:54 (UTC) |

I tend to get my protein from egg whites, nuts, beans, chicken, fish, sometimes steak, and the occasional protein shake/bar. I'm not a huge fan of protein shakes either, but if you do some tinkering and looking around, you can make em work. The stuff I drink is this strawberry (i think) flavor and I just mix it with water, stir, and gulp it down in a few seconds. It dissolves great. There are some halfway decent protein bars too, but most of them taste like crap and the rest you have to be wary of what they put in them (some are like normal candy bars). I've probably tried about 10 different kinds, and there's only one that I've liked so far that had the right nutrition stats. |

| Fitness | Runners -- knee problems | Jul 01 2008 00:21 (UTC) |

Well, I had a similar sounding problem to yours, and my doctor told me it was an inflammed tendon caused by over use. Not to say that's necessarily what's wrong with your knee, but it could be. I haven't been running for 10 days and I can still feel a very slight tightness (i was limping up until a few days ago). My doc told me to stay off it and not to even mess with the elliptical or biking (though walking was ok). I've also been taking anti-inflammatory meds and stretching every single day. I never had this problem when I ran years ago, so I chalk it up to the fact that my body isn't well conditioned for the abuse like it use to be. I'm actually going to give that "No Business Running" program (that Melkor linked) a try starting next week. Until then I'm just walking and swimming. |

| Fitness | Body Fat Percentage vs. BMI | Jun 26 2008 20:15 (UTC) |

This is all very confusing to me because.... a couple years ago when I had a fitness evaluation by the personal trainer at my gym, I had a body fat % of 18 and it was suggested that it was a bit high and I had room for improvement. My cousin was exceptionally healthy and fit and his body fat % was 12%. I've heard it's common for hardcore athletes to be in the single digits for body fat %. Knowing that, I find it hard to believe 22-32% to be a healthy range and below 20% to be "underfat". Then again, you're speaking in the context of women. I wonder if the "healthy body fat % range" is different for men than it is for women. Personally I'd like to get down around 12% myself. Hmm, nevermind... after reading the wikipedia link white_rabbit posted I guess my view of body fat% ranges was correct. I looks like women really do tend to need more body fat. |

I tend to do the same as Agana... I'll have an orange or apple before the gym... if I'm starving I might do a protein shake or a small sandwich too. Then I have a regular meal after I get back. |

Well, I go jogging in a relatively low-key area in the suburbs, but I know what you're saying. For the last interval of my jog I pick up the pace to a dead sprint until my end destination, literally as fast as I can go. I feel like the flash, lol. |

Considering the severity of your prior injury, I'd consider consulting with a physical therapist about jogging and the pain in your knees. If there is an imbalance in the muscles, a therapist can find and help correct that. It's also possible your knees are just not use to the abuse of jogging and need time to build up. Stretches, strength training, and good shoes are a must in the interim. Maybe even ask your therapist about good strength training exercises. I do isometric exercises (where you hold a position with a flexed muscles for a fixed length of time and minimize joint movement). |

I use them sometimes to mix things up. I don't like doing the same thing every time. Think the stair master is my favorite though, that'll work you out hardcore. I never noticed a gender disparity on the low-impact cardio machines at my gym. |

| Foods | Protein Bars | Jun 19 2008 18:06 (UTC) |

I've tried a bunch of different kinds from GNC. You really have to be wary and read over the nutrition label on everything. Some of them are packed with saturated fat and sugar along with the protein. Some of them taste like chalk. I did finally find a bar that I liked though, and it's one of the more healthy ones... when I get home I'll see what it's called. Don't discount them off-hand though, they're a nice quick source of protein and you can make them fit into an eating schedule if you pay attention to what's in it. Once I start doing heavy weight training again soon I'll probably have one a day as a snack, along with a couple protein shakes. |
