You can purchase pre-packaged low-calorie ranch dressing in individual packets. I keep a couple in my purchase all the time. |

Name: Ribbon I had a rough week. I was getting very hungry at night. So I changed the times I was eating my lunch from noon to 3 PM and my evening meal to sometime after 7 PM. Working so far to keep off the hungry feeling at night.

| Maintaining | switching from losing to maintaining | May 05 2009 00:13 (UTC) |

Good for you!! You did it. I cannot tell you how glad I was to get to the maintenance part of my weight loss. Here's what I did when I got to maintenance. I just increased my calories 100 calories per month and weighed once a week. If I didn't gain anything that month, I increased the calories another 100. I was on a 1500 calorie food plan for a year before starting maintenance. What you don't want to do is go back to the old habits. If you do, you will gain. You need at least 3 years to change all those bad eating habits. I got that fact off one of the weight loss shows on TV. So I'm taking it very slow. Now I eat anywhere from 1700-2000 calories per day depending on the amount of exercise I get that day. I didn't get much exercise in January and February and maintained on 1700. So with additional exercise I can eat a few more calories. Each person is different. Don't be afraid, just increase your calories a little at a time and exercise three times per week. You can maintain with very little effort actually.

Sounds like you are building muscle. Are you giving your muscles a rest? If you are working out everyday like that, your body may be resisting weight loss. One other thought too. When you get that close to your goal weight, it always gets harder to lose. You might be on a plateau. Here's a site that might help you. http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calc ulator.htm
This site explains zigzagging, which can help you get over a plateau.

I agree with everyone here about the empty calories, but I had an opposite experience with the chocolate. I love chocolate or something sweet in my diet each day and if I don't have it, I will eventually binge. When I'm really trying to lose weight (1200 calories), I don't eat anything sweet because just like the others said, there is no room for empty calories in a 1200 calorie diet. But when I'm maintaining, I try to have a little bit of chocolate each day because it actually keeps me from feeling deprived and I don't binge as a result. So I think it depends on what works for you. Just be careful because if you don't have will power to say no, eating chocolate can have a negative effect on your diet.

But. . . . (referring to the post above) if you have your fried chicken fried in a healthy oil (like canola or olive) and you eat it with a salad, it becomes healthier according to the Calorie Count site. Here's how: According to the Calorie Count site a 2.2 ounce fried chicken thigh has 162 calories and it gets a grade of "B" healthwise. Now, if you eat it with a salad and 1 tbls dressing, your overall grade improves because a salad or veggies get a grade of "A". If you select a healthy ranch fat-free dressing to go with your salad, you will get a grade of B+ for the dressing. So you've eaten fried chicken, which gets a grade of B and improved the overall score by eating a salad and healthy dressing. Your overall score will be: Calories 221 (thigh-164, 1.5 cups salad- 33, 1 tbls fat-free dressing- 24) Overall Healthscore: B+A+B+ equals a B+ overall average for the meal. I orginally thought I could never have fried chicken ever again in my life and that was very depressing when I was trying to lose weight and caused me to binge all the time. But, I have learned differently through the information provided on this wonderful site. Thanks, calorie count. You have made a huge difference in my life. I've lost 80 pounds and maintained for a year so far. |

Hi Saw: Your situation resembles mine in 2007 before I lost 80 pounds. I couldn't get enough food. I was eating all the fatty foods and was left always wanting more. Come to find out the reason I wanted to binge all the time was that my body was starving for the nutrients in veggies and fruits. Now I eat salad or veggies with each meal and three fruits per day and I don't crave anymore. I feel satisfied all day. I have not given up the foods I like either. I just eat a healthy version of them. I know that's going to be hard if you are eating in a cafateria, but it can be done. Have smaller versions of the foods you love and add salad, veggies and fruit. It works. I promise.

I think the cakes are a stroke of genius too. I wouldn't be able to have a regular Debbie cake because it's too many calories so I would deprive myself only to binge later. Now I can have little Debbie. I just figure the calories into my daily calorie count. Therefore I'm thankful for little Debbie 100 calorie cakes. |

Momof2funnykds: We are running neck and neck girl. I weighed this morning and I was 171 pounds too. I can't stay off the scale either. I like to know what is happening at all times. I guess I must be a control freak. Anyway, within the next couple of weeks, we may be entering new territory--160's here really soon. Good luck.

Hi Everyone: Today was my husband's birthday. We went out to eat to an all you can eat Chinese place. There was so much food there. I fixed myself a sampler plate of the different things I wanted to eat, but did not overeat. I also had a chicken soup. I didn't walk today because I was not home. Good luck everyone.

Hello Everyone: Congrats to everyone. You are doing a great job. Laniemox: Thank you for the great idea!!! I love your idea of creating your menu the day before. I've never tried that. It sounds like it could really help me. Yesterday, I did my walking tape because it was too cold to walk outside.. Walked two miles.

Hi Tincognito: I have a suggestion for you. When you go to your italian place, get a to-go box. Eat everything on the plate except put half your meal in the to-go box to take home with you. Do that before you start to eat, that way you won't be tempted to eat it all. The portions are always huge at these places anyway and by taking it home with you, you can have again the next night. Saves money and time.

Good Morning Everyone: Wow, I had a rough start, but I weighed myself this morning just to see if I was losing and I had lost a couple of pounds. I know weighin is on Monday, but I wanted to check my weight status to see if I need to adjust my calories downward. I'm hoping for more by next week, but probably not. I'm only 7 pounds from goal anyway. The closer I get to goal, the tougher it gets, but I'm in no hurry. My new lifestyle is healthy eating and exercising. So I'm not on any schedule. |

I stayed the same this week and I know why. I just reverted back to what I was doing originally. I think it takes a couple of weeks to get it right. I'm hoping for a loss next week because I'm starting to get in the groooove. |

Hi Mom of Two Funny Kids: So sorry to hear about the news from you doctor regarding exercise. How about walking. Will he let you walk? I saw an exercise physical therapy chair on TV the other day that looked like it might be pretty mild exercise. Hang in there girl. You have a great attitude and eventually you will work yourself out of this corner.

Lanie: Hi again. I hear you. I used to not be able to have anything in the house either. A year ago I would not dare have cookies in the house. It was definitely a red-light food. I started off slow. I started with 100 calorie snacks and did that for a long time. After I had more control, then I started adding some of my red light foods, but if it was still a red-light food, I got rid of it. I gave them to the neighbor kids or something or took it to a pot luck and left them. I began to understand that changes don't happen over night and I needed more time to change the bad habits I had developed. The other thing I've done is to keep red light foods in the freezer, which makes it harder for me to just pop one in my mouth. Have you ever tried that? There is hope, Lanie. You know yourself better than anyone else, but I just wanted to let you know that there is hope. I was a terrible binger. If I can do this anyone can. |

Hi Everyone: Laniemox I just had to reply to your post because I can certainly relate. I had the same problem. I love carbs and sweets. When I'm on a diet I, of course, didn't eat those things and it always caused me to binge. I did that for years until someone on the message boards told me how they dealt with their binges. And it's so simple too. She just includes her sweets and carbs right into her daily calorie count. She allowed for a couple snacks a day, but made certain she got her daily allowances of fruit, veggies, meats, milk, etc. first. Then what ever was left over after having those foods, she allowed hereself to have any snack she wanted until she maxed her calories for the day. I didn't think I could handle having the food around the house all the time because I had always binged. I started out small and then added foods I liked (100 calorie snacks and the like). I haven't binged since December 2007 and I've lost 75 pounds to boot!! Her method taught me a lot about eating healthy and being in control. To me it's a lot easier to control myself and get a little bit of what each day than to deprive myself completely of everything and then binge and gain it all back again. Now after a year, I pretty much have anything I want to eat within my calorie range and I feel like I can eat like this the rest of my life. I don't crave anything because I get it everyday. There's no need to binge. There's two rules you must focus on and never, never break when you do this program: always eat all your portions of fruits, veggies, meat and milk and never, never go over your calorie count for the day. It works and I'm living proof. |

Okay, here's my Monday weigh-in stats. SW 175 GW 160 I'm getting so close that I've started to weigh everything I eat. Does anyone else do that or am I obsessing? Anyone out there have any thing special they do when they get close to goal? 12/29/08 -175

I put that 20 pound goal in CC and it came back with a warning message. It said that 20 pounds by Valentine's Day is too much. So I readjusted my time for losing the 20 pounds to March 6th, which is what CC recommended. Anything I lose by Valentine's Day will be a real treat. And if I lose it by March 6th instead of Valentine's Day, so be it. Have a great day everyone and I'll see you here on Monday for my first weighin. I'm really excited to get started.
