I used to drink at least 6 Diet Cokes a day and was hungry all the time, and gained weight.

I went cold turkey and gave up the Diet Coke a year and a half ago.  I drink green tea, club soda and tap water.  Coke, doesn't taste good to me anymore.

If I treat myself to a beverage nowadays I'll have a Cappucino (small) or a glass of all natural fresh-squeezed orange juice or a glass of champagne!  (Not every day of course, maybe once or twice a week)  It's a real treat!

I plugged your numbers into the calorie burning tool, assuming you are about 45, 240, 5'11" your burn for sedentary lifestyle = 2400

PLUS whatever you burn exercising!

You are eating way too few calories and cannot be getting enough nutrition!

Weight Loss I am going to give myself a pat on the back... Jun 02 2009

Here's a little pat on the back from me too!

Your post was very well said.  The weight loss journey is also a journey to well being.  Certainly I fall off the wagon from time to time, but for the most part I actually enjoy my new healthy food diet.

Instead of dwelling on what we can't have, it does help to concentrate on how good healthy foods taste - especially when exercising portion control.  It's nice to actually feel real hunger and then enjoy a healthy meal.

It feels good not to be stuffed when going to bed at night.

Weight Loss Extra skin? May 29 2009
13:51 (UTC)

I don't have prices or experience with skin brushing etc.

However I did look at your profile, or at least try to, and you don't have a profile listed.  Your picture shows that you are quite young.

30 KG weight loss in 5-6 months is a LOT.

I wonder if you aren't perhaps too young to be losing so much so quickly.  Young, growing people really need good nourishment.

That being said, please wait at least a year to see how much your skin shrinks.  Skin does adapt, especially when you are young.

Weight Loss When will I stop being so hungry? May 27 2009

I just re-read your post and  noticed something:  you are eating sugar free products.

Sugarfree products always make me feel really hungry!

I read an article awhile ago which basically boiled down to: when your body tastes the sweet taste, it instinctively looks for the calories.  When it doesn't find any, it triggers hunger pangs.  So indirectly sugarfree foods actually cause weight gain because they trigger hunger pangs.

So the article said.  Anyway, I gave up diet beverages etc. and feel much more satisfied drinking water or carbonated water than I felt when drinking diet sodas.

Maybe you should try leaving out the sugarfree stuff for awhile to see if that helps.

Are you truly hungry?  Or do you just have an appetite that kicks in too often?

If I've just eaten and still "feel hungry" I know it has to be the appetite or cravings kicking in.

The trick is to try to find foods that satisfy your appetite, but are still healthy and low in calories.

Also avoid those foods and beverages which trigger cravings (for me it's refined flour products, sugars and sweets).

It's not easy, but it is possible to cut calories, lose weight and still not be hungry.

Another idea would be to increase your activity/exercise level, burning 300 or so more calories per days and therefore being able to eat that much more.

I'm 56 andd have gone from 130 to 284 lbs in my adult life.

Currently I'm at 237.

Point is, when the realization finally hits you that you weight unacceptably too much, there is no use in hiding.  Start to do something about it.

Yes, people will notice you gained weight.  They will also notice when you lose weight.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the compliments I have received and at the people I have received them from.

Don't hide.

Also, I agree with purchasing a few outfits that fit your current weight.  Nothing makes us look fatter than too tight clothes.

Did you gain 5 kgs while eating 1500 cal per day and exercising?

That just doesn't sound right.  Either you are not measuring/weighing foods and are way off in calorie count or you are ill and need to consult a Doctor.

Weight Loss Struggling May 26 2009
19:42 (UTC)

I found out that white breads, rolls, cakes, refined sugars, chocolate are my "triggers".  They seem to turn on my appetite switch and make me insatiably hungry.

When I eliminate these trigger foods from my diet I find it fairly easy to "eat clean" and the pounds slowly but surely drop off, especially if you watch your caloric intake and get at least a little moderate exercise.

You need to find out what your triggers are.  There's no need to starve yourself.  You can find lots of healthy low calorie foods and after a short while, perhaps just a few weeks, you will start to feel so much better, and it will get easier and easier from week to week to stick with the healthy eating plan.

Go to college.

As far as weight loss is concerned, you don't have to go all out.  Just start making small lifestyle changes, like religiously taking a small 15 minute walk after dinner, like exercising some portion control, like substituting just one healthy low cal snack a day for a high fat high cal snack.

Small changes over time ... will result in healthy weight loss.

Also eating well fuels your body so that you feel better, learn better etc. etc.

Just my 5 cents worth ............

There is no fast cure ... unfortunately.

Lots of us have gained over the holidays.  The important thing is to get back on the wagon, eat heathy, exercise - and before you know it, all will be on track again.

I had gone from 284 to 214 and bought new clothes since everything was way too big.  On Jan. 1st I was back up to 230!  Cringe!

But I'm back into my new heathy lifestyle, got rid of 8 lbs. of bloat/water retention and in a month I should be back to the 214 I had gotten down to - just in time to go on vacation :(

Weight Loss Thanksgiving messed me up BIGTIME Jan 05 2009

From Thanksgiving to New Year I gained 16 lbs!

Since 1/1/2009 I've lost 8 of those lbs.  That went fast.  Was probably bloat/water retention.

But the last 8 are going to go much slower.  Will probably take a month to get rid of them at least!

We're all in the same boat!

Have you noticed how delicious healthy foods taste after getting used to them?  How good everything tastes when not overeating?

I don't know about you, but I sleep much better when I eat clean and in suitable portions.

Over the holidays I cheated and the scale got it's revenge (16 lbs more on Jan 1st than just before Thanksgiving), but strangely enough 7 lbs. have already dropped off after only 3 days of clean eating.  Must have been lots of bloat.

I also agree with 25/25/50 fat/protein/carbs %-ages.  I can feel very well, have virtually no cravings and be fairly satisfied with 1500 cals per day if I eat this nutrient balance.

I also agree that so-called "cheat days" are to be recommended.  It allows you to live guilt free!  (which in turn keeps you from feeling so bad that you just give up on the whole thing)

Weight Loss has anyone lost 10 pounds in a month?, it is possible? Jan 03 2009
12:31 (UTC)

Possible? Maybe.  Depending on lots of factors ... but even if you lose 20 lbs. in 3 months (which is totally possible) it will make a huge change for the better, right?

My first month I lost 19 lbs. eating healthy.  Then it slowed down more and more each month.  Of course I started at 284 lbs and am down 56 lbs. in 11 months - had actually gotten this far about 6 months in, but have been not losing for past 5 months (company, vacations etc), and in fact gained 9 lbs. over Holidays, of which I have again dropped 4 lbs.

So losing the lbs. is only part of the equation.  Maintaining will be something we have to dedicate ourselves to for the rest of our lives.

Good luck to you.

Weight Loss I think i am going to cry... Jan 02 2009
13:01 (UTC)

Don't cry, get motivated (again)!

Clean out the fridge ... give cookies and sweets to friends, co-workers, kids in the neighborhood ... buy yourself some healthy food and fruit for a snack!

Some of the 10 lbs. you are ate bloat ... extra food in your intestines and water weight ... so the sooner you get back to your healthy eating the sooner this will rectify.

I ate clean yesterday and today the scale rewarded me with showing 2 lbs. less!  If you gained it fast and immediately get with the program again, you will lose it again fast - probably/possibly within one month!  At least that's the way it has worked for me after our last vacation ...

It's a new year!  It's a new start!

From your entry I see that you feel great, too.  That's just as important as looking great.

It's interesting to read that you have wholeheartedly embraced the lifestyle change and that you now cannot imagine living any other way.

I'm a little over halfway toward losing 114 lbs. and you are an inspiration to me.  I'm sure many others will get a morale booster from your story.

Is there any chance your calorie count is off?

Try carefully measuring and/or weighing everything you eat or drink.  Log everything.

Also recalculate your burn meter setting your activity level at sedentary and adding only the precise amount of exercise you then do.

Good luck to you.

Weight Loss So strange! Oct 12 2008
13:03 (UTC)

I have noticed the same phenomenon in Germany.

1.) Many eat a hearty breadfast: wholegrain bread and cold cuts and cheeses. The whole grains metabolize better than our white bread and they are full until lunch, not forever snacking on candy bars, donuts or other junk food.

2.) In Germany lunch is the big meal of the day: meats, veggies & potatoes

3.) in the evenings they have a sandwich, kind of like breakfast.

4.) they walk a lot and many ride bicycles as transportation.

5.) going for a walk is actually a social activity, so when they go to a cafe for coffee and cake, odds are they've been walking and windowshopping for better than an hour first (or afterwards)

When these same people come here and life our lifestyle, guess what?  Many of them gain plenty of vacation pounds!

I do believe that eating hearty with good nutritional values works better than lots of our high cal, high fat, high sugar stuff.

Dillard's & Macy's have nice plus size depts.  I prefer Dillard's.  They have great sales, too.  Anyway,  Polo Ralph Lauren comes in womens plus sizes up to 24 and often feature nice cottons and cotton blends.  Even silk blouses etc.  Also Ann Klein, Jones New York are great brands available in plus size.  As well as LizClaiborne,  Adrianna Pappell has exquisite dressy dresses.

I normally eat healthy, well balanced meals and stay within my calorie allowance ... and lose weight.

But recently (had company) prepared and ate the "old" way.  When I ate until I was full, I gained weight,  but when I watched the total calories per day ... I lost weight.

I did notice that I was hungrier and less satisfied eating the "old" way.  Don't get me wrong: ice cream, bbq ribs etc. tasted wonderful ... but these foods are high in calories, fats and sugars and the portions allowed were so small that I just didn't feel satisfied.

When eating "clean", i.e. lean proteins, healthy carbs, plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, low fat, low sodium, no processed sugars I can eat some pretty decent size portions for 1500 calories per day and feel relatively full and satisfied.

Congratulations!  I think you did great!

You were hungry.  You were in a social situation.  There were no "healthy choices available.  You allowed yourself a small quantity of a tasty treat.

Good for you!

There's nothing wrong with allowing yourself an occasional small treat.

It sounds like your friend and her Mom are obsessive.  That's not a good thing.

You on the other hand, acted normally and maintained control over your eating.  That's something to be proud of if you ask me.

Besides learning good clean eating habits, we also have to learn how to react when confronted with just such situations as you described ... and not lose control!  You did it!  I'm proud of you.

Health & Support Plantar fasciitis? Sep 22 2008
00:06 (UTC)
10

I've had plantar faciitis.  Had extensive medical treatments, which didn't do much for me (incl. 3 months of physical therapy).

Then I just rested my feet and after about 6 months is subsided.

Recently (this Spring) it flared up again and I bought a pair of MBT shoes. Walking only 1-2 blocks a day it improved vastly the very first week I started wearing the shoes.  Within 3 weeks, it was GONE.

Then a friend of mine in Germany also developed PF and her Dr. didn't help her.  I told her about the shoes, and they helped her as well.

No guarantees, but if nothing else helps, try the shoes. (They're expensive: around $ 240 for a pair of the sandals, but they're cheaper than the Dr. was)

Weight Loss Appetite killer capsules...safe?? Sep 19 2008

Natural does not equal harmless.

That being said, I understand only too well how difficult exercising portion control can be.

I have found that certain foods act as triggers to stimulate my appetite, namely refined sugar and white flour.

If you can isolate your triggers, you should be able to control portion size and calorie intake.

I started Feb 1st at 284 lbs and now weigh 215 lbs.  No pills, no shakes or anything like that. I can truthfully state that as long as I eat clean I feel satisfied with my portion size.  So it does work.

(Believe me I have tried numerous diets over the years and never managed to lose all the weight, and always gained it back and then some, getting progressively heavier and unhappier. )

I really feel happy and healthy and in control.  If I can do it, so can you!

Weight Loss Overeating Sep 19 2008

I don't like to waste food either. However portion control needs to be a major factor in our lifestyle change (in addition of course to making nutritionally wise choices).

So if you have cooked too much, put a portion aside for the next day.

In a restaurant, eat a predetermined amount and take the rest home for the next day.

Restaurant food is almost always more calorie dense than what I prepare at home, so I may not have much of a calorie deficit (if any) when dining out even when bringing food home.  But by eating only a portion of your meal you may have reduced your caloric intake to a maintenance level for that day.  That's not nearly as bad as going well over limit and needing days to make up for it.
