well, i tried adding some carrots and a whole wheat bagel instead of the cheerios, and a side of broccoli at dinner, and some more protein, and it upped my grade to an A! I'm so excited :) I have the approval of a computer program! no seriously, guys, thanks for your help. I'll work on keeping this balance. I don't know how successful I'll be, but at least now I know what I need to work on. Again, thanks for the advice. |

oops, sorry, i forgot to log breakfast, which was 3/4 cup cheerios, a glass of skim milk, and an apple, which explains the low calories. Thank you for the suggestions. I will try adding more fiber and more protein. I do tend to go for white rice, but for wheat bread. I've never tried brown rice before, but I'll give it a go. |

approximately how many steps are there in a mile? I'd like to know, since i'm a college student and I regularly walk anywhere from 4-5 miles around campus every day. I've never counted them though :) |

| Health & Support | My doctor is a JERK and he told me I am going to gain weight | Oct 15 2008 18:49 (UTC) |

Doctors should always be understanding of their patients needs--both physical and emotional. I would go back to the doctor, or get him on the phone if you can, and ask him to explain why he expects weight gain, if he's trying to prepare you for the worst case scenario, or if he is absolutely sure. Then ask the same questions you asked here if he's not being alarmist or blunt. If you are satisfied with the response, yay for you. If not, or if you just want a second opinion or a gentler doctor, then feel free to see someone else. You should be happy with your healthcare, and especially your general physician. If you dont like him or her very much you're less likely to come in for maintenence check-ups. But more than anything else, you should feel like you have control over your own health and that includes understanding what's happening to you :) |

wow, I got a bigger response than I thought I would. Thanks guys! I'll try ballparking the calories--i hadn't thought of it. i'm so used to thinking in absolutes that it's hard for me to realize that if i miss a few small ingredients it won't kill me. It's better than nothing...:) I tend to be a non-confrontational person, but a meeting may be necessary. Part of the reason that I don't want to speak up is because i feel a bit like that picky little finicky eater that you want to slap. I already have said that I can't eat red meat for religious and health reasons, and I have already said that I won't drink any kind of milk but skim, and other little demands that make my roomies secretely roll their eyes at me. I feel like I'm already annoying them, not just with my eating habits but also with my living habits (I can't watch TV while studying, so i sequester myself in my room a lot, and apparently I shed like a dog, etc etc) Kay, I do have a set of measuring cups, and though I don't have a scale, I'm pretty proficient at guesstimating using a combination of eyeballing and comparing against the back of the bag of chicken, shrimp, etc. I'm thinking of putting a cheap one on my birthday wishlist though.

heya! I'm 20, and I have watched my mother (who is superthin) go through a lot of crap because she doesn't weigh enough. She is easily exhausted, she's not very strong, and she doesnt' have the endurance to live life to the fullest. i am not implying that all very thin people are like that, but I would rather be healthy at 165 lbs, which is good for being my height 5 8. I would never want to drop below 160. I think i look stick-like, and my boyfriend likes him some curves :p |

I have not heard of this light bread? Is it like diet coke, where it tastes different, uses fake sugars or something?
I don't want to make a huge fuss about it either because I don't want to come off rude. and I do try to log the extra freebie calories as best I can. |

| Weight Loss | why gain weight in college? | Oct 15 2008 07:21 (UTC) |

dorm fridge--if you have the space and money to get your own fridge, definately do so, but realize that mini fridges aren't as cool as normal ones, and generally they're so small all you can fit in there is a gallon of milk, fruit, and maybe some leftovers/bottled water. i had one freshman year, and it was horrible. Depending on your college you might also have a kitchenette either in your room, on your floor, or in your dorm hall somewhere. check with your potential colleges to see which dorms have them and rank your choices accordingly. as for staying active, there's always intramural sports, working out, etc, but again, fitting it into your schedule is a b*** :)

I'm five eight and around 230 pounds on a large frame, I swing between 225 and 230. My goal is around 1600 calories a day. The burn meter says I burn around 2200 calories/day so that leaves me with a 600 calorie deficit. However, this is a goal, and so I do leave about 100 calorie supposed "wiggle room" because there's always a free handful of popcorn or small piece of candy, or a cookie or something to be had around campus :) |

1. alcohol--look at the calories of a bottle of beer
3. Stress-eating--for the first time in your life, you are trying to balance a social calendar and more difficult academics without parental supervision. That leads to quite a bit of procrastination and a lot of late-night studying, which leads to late nite ice cream, chips, fast food runs, and/or pizza.

50 g of popped kernels should equal about 50 g of unpopped, but unpopped should be easier to weigh :D So measure them out before popping, but it really shouldn't make a difference! |

crysonna, I didn't think of it like that, but now that you mention it, it's partly true. You know, if you're very hurt about the comment, you might want to take your mom out out eat somewhere, or go shopping or do something that signals a girl's night, and thank her for being there for you through ups and downs in your life, including your weight and explaining why the comment hurt so much. Promise her that you'll try and limit the conversation to your success to only the times that you weigh yourself, if she will kindly listen and continue to support you. Maybe emphasize how much her support means to you, and how much you need her to be on your side for your weight loss journey, because she's your mother, and you need her. She might be flattered at the attention, and listen to what you have to say. If that doesn't work, no one can say that you didn't try. |

1200 calories sounds like NOTHING, lol! Maybe try and fit even a 100 calories more worth of exercise into your day. Either that or push back your goal date a little so you can eat maybe 1300-1400 calories? It might take longer, but it wont be so restrictive! |

I agree with michellerc above. Stop putting butter on your vegetables. Butter has an enormous number of calories per tablespoon (something like 90). Try that butter spray instead, and that itself will save you around 100 calories/vegetable serving, so possible 100-400 calories a day! I think you're going to have to just give up the fried food and gravy for a while, because it's really hard to just limit yourself on that one. Easier just to throw in the towel and nix it. If you have family that you cook for (I don't know if you do), I would ask them to "eat healthy" with you for a little while, and get their fried fixes elsewhere. As for bread, I don't know if you're talking about plain bread or sweet breads. As for plain bread, there are low cal bread options out there, or even just eating less of it will probably be fine. If you're talking about sweet breads, let yourself have only half a slice. That's what I've been doing with this incredibly delicious rhubarb bread that we keep making, that has enough sugar in it to feed the world's ants for three weeks :D Also check out this site for healthy recipes: http://www.recipezaar.com/recipes/healthy It's a category in the normal site. You can search "chicken" or "beef" within the category and see if you find anything you like. There's quite a selection, so hopefully you'll be fine... Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | what is a realistic goal for me?? | Jun 25 2008 19:23 (UTC) |

Hi! I started off about 225 lbs, and thought that 210 might be a good starting goal for the summer. I fell off the bandwagon, so maybe that's not completely possible any more, but still trying for it, and I measured 222 this morning. So maybe start out for 10-15 lbs in around three months? |

Sorry for the mistake :) Fruits are good carbs, I think, but if you're restricted, that's your diet, I guess. I second morrighu's sentiment. Nothing snaps like a carrot :) You can always try hummus for a dip, if that's not too soft for you. |

Since you've got Mr. Khan up there, and your name is Surina, I'm assuming that you're indian :) In that case, I'm also assuming that you know what chat masala is...? God's gift to vegetables, that's what...you can go to any indian store and get it prepackaged by Shan. Also, pineapple is sweet! So are mangoes! And apples and those purple grapes! :D |
