Motivation Cannot motivate myself to exercise Mar 22 2009

There's two things I do to push through my workout:

First I set a goal for myself. If I just get on the treadmill and start running, it's easy to want to stop after 10 minutes. But if I say, "I'm going to run until I've burned 250 calories" or "I'm going to keep going for 2 miles," I end up pushing myself to reach it (I'm competitive even with myself.) On lots of treadmills you can set up how long you want to run for, and that helps. I'll set the timer to 30 minutes and run without looking down. Before I know it the treadmill has stopped and I've been running 30 minutes.

The other thing I do is watch movies! Music doesn't actually help me that much because I'm a visual person and I get bored of staring straight ahead. My gym has a cardio theater so I can watch The Mummy Returns while I run. It's definitely a good distraction and I'm encouraged to go to the gym if I know a good movie is playing.

Motivation Already over my limit but still hungry! :( Help! Mar 20 2009

I have heard the 1500 calorie thing before... to be honest I'm not sure I could lose any weight if I ate 1600-1900 calories day. Most days I'm really satisfied with the 1400 calories, but today I didn't have as much food because of the burrito...

I know what you guys mean.

I'm half asian and when I was in middle school, I would eat a cheese danish for breakfast. I'd have pizza at school for lunch. After school, my friends and I would walk to the community center and get chips, candy, pretzels, and soda from the vending machines. Then I'd come home and eat a big bowl of spaghetti for dinner (with extra meatballs and tomato sauce, please). And I was always thin. I miss my metabolism!

Like a lot of you guys said, calorie counting is seared into my brain. I can't eat something without immediately thinking about the calories in it (most of my friends probably don't even know how many calories are in the banana or the scrambled eggs they're eating - but I do). It's both a good thing and a bad thing. It sometimes stops me from making bad choices, but I also feel like it's taking control.

One of the things that really scares me is the idea that it'll never stop. If I stop counting, I think I'd overeat. But I can't imagine living and eating like this forever. Thoughts?

Hi everybody, my name's Ella, I'd like to join if it isn't too late

I'm 16 years old, 5'3" and 117 pounds. I've always been around 110 so that's about my goal, although I'm more concerned with toning up and getting rid of my flab. It'd be really nice to have a support group!

jtlb, don't stress about the two pounds. It sounds like you're working really hard and that's definitely improving your health even if the scale doesn't immediately register. You're definitely on the right path! :)

Rikaj, thanks so much for your reply! I've never done weight training before. Can you give me some advice/specifics?

Guys, thanks for your responses.

I know I can't expect necessarily to weigh the same as I did in middle school or as a freshman. But it's not just that the number has gone up. My thighs are really big and I'm starting to get a bit of a belly. For the first time ever, I have a little muffin top. It's really frustrating to see all this fat on my body... I even have stretch marks around my waist and inner thighs.

I'm pretty sure this change is completely due to my poor eating habits, and not to natural development. I used to have a fast metabolism - I'd have a pastry for breakfast, the school lunch, candy and pizza, and a big bowl of spaghetti for dinner. I also love to bake, and I'd make and eat a bunch of cookies. I have a tendency to overeat at meals, snack too much, and eat when I'm not even hungry. Those are all things I'm working to change.

I would be perfectly happy with being 120 pounds if I looked slimmer. Does anyone have suggestions for toning up my body and losing the fat? I know that spot reduction doesn't exist. If I'm not supposed to cut too many calories, how much should I be exercising?

Also, for the person who suggested I might be about ready to grow a little more... I wish! Unfortunately 5'3" is already my predicted height. Those Asian genes won't let me get much taller.
