Weight Loss PB2 Peanut Butter Replacement/Susbstitute, whatever you want to call it Jul 24 2008

Oh man this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! Peanut butter is definitely a huge vice for me, it's too bad there's no store in the immediate DC area (though I'm considering making the 40 minute drive to the nearest location...). I guess ordering online will have to do. Thanks for tip!

For the seemingly many pizza fanatics...I make mine an almost pure veggie pizza. I replace the crust with a half of a seasoned tomato (to act as both the crust and the sauce) or a large portabella mushroom cap. You can make your own sauce with some seasoned tomato puree or paste, sprinkle a little bit of low fat mozzarella, and top with whatever veggies or meats you want (I use black beans, red bell peppers, more mushrooms, and spinach). Obviously it's not a real pizza but if I'm looking to lessen my carb intake a little bit it helps.

For soda cravings (which I luckily don't get!), some sparkling water and crystal light I hear works.

Fries can be made with baked slices of sweet potato or butternut squash.

Instead of eating pumpkin pie, you can toast a light english muffin, season some canned pumpkin with cinnamon (or if you'd like, pumpkin pie spice) and splenda, and just spread on top.

I think that's all I eat on a regular basis (with the exception of the soda).

Not really a fan of cottage cheese, but I guess I could try adding a little bit to my diet. Thanks for the suggestion.

I do eat eggs for breakfast daily (I'm switching to egg beaters though). I'm also considering adding more tofu into my diet as well.

Misskady, it's great to hear of such a nice lifestyle change! That is another thing my diet has done for me- I enjoy a nice walk now. I only used to go when my mother asked me to, but now I am finding myself really happy on walks alone.

That sounds like so much fun! Plus, you're getting in extra strength (the push-ups) and extra cardio (the stairs) on top of that jog.

My runs consist of 30 minutes of torture throughout my conveniently hilly neighborhood hoping the neighbors or my friends don't see me dripping sweat and fighting off mosquitoes. Not exactly a fun run at all.

I never used to care about my weight or food enough to do anything about it, but now that I am doing something about it I just seem to obsess. I don't know why, but I literally spend nearly every moment thinking about food or calories. I'm seeing a doctor in a couple of weeks to refill a prescription and I plan on asking about my diet or someone I can see for help.

Who knew food could be so addictive?

They usually have a lot of calories

I have one Designer whey chocolate protein shake before I hit the gym (and sometimes after if I was lifting weights) and it's 100 calories for 18g of protein, and I just make it with water...

Really? I've got to try it, I've never seen it before.

Oh man those peanut butter filled cookies are tempting beyond reason!

It's funny because I never realized how much I loved cookies until I went on a diet. I used to only really like chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies, but now I'm ravenous for any kind. I still adore chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cup cookies, and regular peanut butter cookies but I have found myself craving oatmeal raisin lately.

Yeah I have a history of substance abuse and mental illness, so it's not surprising that I've found myself obsessing over something else now.

I actually use my diet as an excuse not to smoke, do drugs, or drink excessively. If I get tempted to drink, I'll remind myself how many calories is in that beer and stick to water. If I think about smoking I'll remind myself that it's going to make my workouts even harder.

I guess I'm kind of playing the two addictions off each other now and I'm struggling to find a way not to focus on either.

Oh yes everyday. I literally just walk away when I am tempted. Today I went to the grocery store and found myself staring at the nutrition facts for cookies that were on sale. Five minutes later I was still staring.

Of course I was frustrated knowing I shouldn't have them, but I convinced myself I would be more frustrated if I did have them. I think that walking away made me feel 100x better than I would've felt if I did give into my craving.

Be strong Smile

Weight Loss can we believe the scales? Jul 11 2008
02:21 (UTC)

I have the same problem. My old scale, my new scale, and the doctor's scale all say different things. Remember the scale is not the only way to gauge your progress: clothing sizes, body fat percentage, body measurements are all also ways to see how much you've lost.

In terms of keeping track of how much you've lost on your diet, I'd say stick to one scale that you started using at the beginning of your progress so you can see how many pounds you've lost as according to that scale. Just remember that it is not the only way to track your progress.

Weight Loss Breakfast? Jul 11 2008
02:09 (UTC)

Eating breakfast in general jump starts your metabolism. I don't know for sure if eating a bigger one is scientifically better than eating a smaller one, but it has worked in my personal experience. I usually eat a breakfast of about 400 calories (in contrast to my former breakfast habits of skipping it or eating 100 or so calories) and I pack it full of fiber and protein. The protein helps metabolism while the fiber keeps me full so I won't snack as hard before lunch. I think it was Men's Health magazine where I read that it should be your breakfast goal to get in as much fiber as you can.

Weight Loss My friend is a bad food influence!!! HELP! Jul 11 2008
02:05 (UTC)

My brother is the same way. And I have to live with him!

I know he's kidding, but yes it is annoying and yes it sometimes does derail my progress. I usually joke back and tell him to stop, but if he doesn't I'll firmly tell him that he isn't of any help. If your friend is relentlessly pushing you to eat foods you know you shouldn't, I think you should tell her that it is a struggle losing weight and that you'd appreciate it if she stopped. If she is a good friend of yours, I'm sure that if you let her know how hard you've worked and how much your progress has meant to you, she will stop making you feel guilty.

If you find that just eating with her is tempting, then perhaps the best way is not to eat with her in general to help ignore her eating habits. Eat your meals alone and eat in line with your diet. Stick to your diet and your schedule and tell yourself that even though she's eating, you don't have to eat with her. Yes it'll be frustrating to watch her eat ice cream and cream pastries (oh gosh I feel the temptation myself), but remember that it'll be even more frustrating to lose sight of your goal.

Young Calorie Counters Opinions on High School?? Jul 10 2008
21:23 (UTC)

I just graduated about a month ago Smile

Going through high school has made me grow up BIG time, so expect a journey. Personally, high school was only enjoyable during the middle of it. At the beginning, I was so nervous about meeting new people (I only had one friend to begin with at my high school because all my old friends went to different schools). Towards the end, I was too anxious to get out of high school to even enjoy it anymore. I think that you have to get used to high school and WANT to be there to enjoy it (unfortunately, I definitely did not want to be there most of the time).

Do extracurriculars as much as you can (without overwhelming yourself, of course). You'll meet tons of friends by getting involved (best of all, you'll probably meet a lot of upperclassmen who can give you rides!). If you like sports, I highly recommend you try out. Though I am playing soccer in college, I didn't play in high school for personal reasons and it's probably my biggest regret.

Good luck!

Foods What's your take on SlimFast shakes? Jul 10 2008

I drink Slim Fast fairly often. I usually drink them before a run or before soccer practice because they're filling (to the point of I don't need to eat more snacks, not to the point of exploding on the soccer field), quick, and give me a lot of energy. I do realize that there is a lot of sugar though. Slim Fast has made a reduced sugar and low carb version, but I don't really know how those stand against the originals.

Foods I have the absolute WORST craving.... What is your weakness? Jul 10 2008
14:12 (UTC)
19

(Bad) Asian food, like Chinese takeout, Popeye's (most days I would KILL for it), cookies, cake, and pizza. It doesn't help that my brother orders pizza most days and I have to force myself into the other room so I don't give into his offers. Chocolate and peanut butter are pretty strong cravings too. I'll give into peanut butter every now and then, but I'm pretty good about staying away from chocolate bars because I know I won't stop when I start.

I used to be crazy about cereal, but for some reason I've been able to get over that binge. I'll have a handful as a snack, but for some reason won't be tempted to go overboard as much.

Foods favorite teas Jul 10 2008
14:08 (UTC)

Being half Asian, tea is REALLY in my culture. I grew up drinking barley tea and green tea.

Recently I've been trying more herbal teas (like Celestial Seasonings' Zingers, cranberry apple, cinnamon apple, etc). I also have a huge weakness for anything Chai. I've been drinking yerba mate tea nonstop lately. It tastes similar to green tea and apparently it helps boost your metabolism. Anyway, it's delicious.

I pretty much love all teas (except I have never been able to get into Earl Grey tea...), which is great because if I'm drinking a cup of tea, I won't think about eating.

Weight Loss Proteine shakes... helps to lose weight? Jul 10 2008
13:56 (UTC)
20

Protein shakes I think are most often used by lifters and even those who want to gain weight. They usually have a lot of calories, so I personally don't drink them because I will go over my caloric limit. Protein in general, however, will help you in weight loss because it builds lean muscle that helps reduce body fat and burns more calories.

If you're counting calories, protein shakes might be a bit much for you. If you can squeeze them into your diet, then make sure you're exercising regularly to make the most of the added protein. If you're looking to add a little protein in your diet but don't want it for that many calories, try fat free yogurt (Light n Fit yogurt is only 60 cals for 5 g of protein) or even Slim Fast high protein shakes (they're only about 190 calories for about 15 g of protein).

Weight Loss I know that it's unhealthy... Jul 10 2008

I've read several tips for binging that I have yet to try. One of them is to remove junk food from your house so that temptation is not there (availability makes temptation really bad!). If you want a treat, you have to go outside the home and get it (and don't bring any home with you). There's several factors there that I see would prevent a binge (for me anyway): 1. I wouldn't want other people seeing me with a huge tub of ice cream or half a cake, so eating a treat in public forces a little portion control 2. I have to pay for each treat individually, so I will be less tempted to add on another scoop of ice cream seeing as it would cost a couple extra bucks 3. If it is pre-wrapped, pre-scooped, or otherwise pre-packaged by someone else, I can't just give myself another slice or scoop etc.

Try taking your mind off the food in general. Take 20 minutes to do something else (housework, a hobby, take a walk) and the temptation for binging should lessen. Also, keep in mind that you probably want that slice of cake because you know you shouldn't have it. I've been coming to find that I feel disgusting after I give into my temptations because I didn't really want it in the first place, I just wanted it because I couldn't have it.

What I personally do is just tell myself that I've worked to hard to depress myself over a chocolate bar or something. If I avoid a binge, I can reward myself by throwing in an extra couple of calories of a healthy snack (fruit mostly) so I can feel like I'm still a little sinful for treating myself to a few extra calories, but I can be guilt-free knowing that the few extra calories I gave into were healthy.

Weight Loss scale obsessed Jul 09 2008

I do the same thing and I absolutely hate it, but cannot stop. I might try the mall suggestion though. I am taking slow steps to stop weighing myself so much- my first step being to avoid the scale after I eat. It only makes this obsession all the worse.

I found it kind of funny that someone brought up OCD since I was diagnosed with OCD six years ago. Perhaps I've taken the scale up as a new OCD obsession?

Fitness What's your favorite exercise? Jul 09 2008

I really love biking, tennis, and soccer. They're easy and fun. Though I'm starting to like it/get more used to it, I've never really had a thing for running. I just don't like running without a purpose (such as getting to a soccer ball or a tennis return) so I've never been really excited about it. I will admit that running is great exercise though, so I do force myself to do it nearly every day.

Haha I tell my friends all the time how much I sweat. I sweat more than any other girl I know, that's for sure. I don't think there's anything physically wrong with sweating a ton, you should be worried about just staying hydrated.

I used to think it was gross how much I sweat (I admit it's not very attractive), but then I remind myself that I'd rather sweat a ton than not sweat at all. I think of it as a reminder that I'm exercising and that I'm working towards becoming more fit simply by having to break a sweat.
