Weight Loss Has anyone tried... Oct 30 2009

I try to eat clean when I can and I have a couple of Tosca's books.  I haven't made anything from them though.  Everything seems to be so high in calories.  Which is great if you are figure athlete and lift weights all day long.  But I don't do that.

I do agree that eating clean is the best way to go!

I try to avoid overly processed soy products like veggie burgers and all that but I read that soy milk isn't really that highly processed.  I would recommend drinking the soy over the almond because soy has so much protein and almond milk hardly has any.  But if you want to make your own almond milk I recommend throwing in some dried dates to make it a bit sweet.

Good luck!

Hi. I lived in Japan for awhile but I have never been to China.  I don't really know if this will help but here is what I did.  I ate a lot of vegetarain sushi and when I used soy sauce I just used a tad bit.  I also ate a lot of edamame, sea weed salads, soup.  I sort of avoided the tofu though since it always looked like it was deep fried.

Good luck!

Pregnancy & Parenting How old is too old to bring your son into the women's bathroom? Mar 07 2009

I read one time that there was an actual law that set the age limit for this.  Don't know if it is set by state or it is even an actual law.  At 10 I think they should be able to do it on there own but then again why does it really matter?  They aren't in the stall with me while I am peeing so I don't really care if they are in the bathroom.

The Lounge boys with dolls Jan 06 2009

My husbands step-sister had a son about a week before my daughter was born.  They are both two.  When we got together for Christmas her son picked up the doll that my girl recieved as a Christmas present.  The grandfather practically screamed at the boy and said he wasn't allowed to play with it.  I don't understand this attitued.  It is natural for children to want to do things that their parents do, like feed or dress a baby doll.  Some people are just silly.

Everybody's Nuts are the best pistachios!  I love the European Roasted ones.  They are bit hard to find though.  Walgreens carries the brand but doesn't always have all the varieties.

Vegetarian Vegan while pregnant? Aug 29 2008

I have been a vegan for many years and continued to be one through out my pregnancy and while nursing my daughter.  We had a super easy/healthy pregnancy and home birth.  I didn't consult a nutritionist or anything like that during my pregnancy. Getting all of your protein, calcium, iron, B12, etc. isn't really a problem.  There are so many fortified foods now a days.  If you have any questions just send me a message.  I love talking about babies and veganism.

Also, I know several healthy, well fed vegan babies!

Me too!  I am 5'3'', 111 pounds.  I am so bony on top.  You can see all my ribs and my breast bone.  But the thighs and bum are so not bikini ready.  I have been cutting back on my cardio and focusing more on strength training (lunges, squats, and dead lifts).  Some of my family are commenting on my weight but I really don't know what to do.

I was wondering what exactly is Rocket?  I have a few British diet books that mention it but I am not sure what exactly it is.

And Shiritaki tofu noodles are a decent replacement for wheat noodles.  I think they taste way better than rice noodles I used to try.

Some theme parks have healthier options now.  I know that King's Island now has a Subway.  So I'd say keep your eyes open and you might find a healthy option.   Maybe you could check their web page to see if they have anything.   But I would pack a meal just in case.

I am a vegan as well and always bring my own food.  I have had too many experiences of going several days without anything to eat.  It took me awhile to get over the whole feeling rude thing but I just try and be nice about it and in the end they feel better knowing that you aren't going hungry.

Bob's Red Mill makes vital wheat gluten.  I have never bought but I think it has a recipe for making seitan on the side of it.  I found it at Earthfare with all the other strange flours.  I doubt that the wheat gluten flour is the same but I don't know.

Weight Loss Movie this weekend... please help or just wish me luck! Jul 20 2008

I used to work in a movie theater and would snack on the popcorn until one day when I was cleaning the butter dispensers.  The plastic tube that the butter flavored oil flows through gets clogged with fat deposits that remain on the tube.  Then the oil can't get through.  Made me think about what all the fat was doing to my tubes.  Yuch.

Even if you don't get the butter we put so much oil and salt into it.

Foods Buying in bulk, and dairy-free... Jul 20 2008

Have you tried Amazon.com?  I know that in the US you can buy groceries in bulk and if you subscribe you can get a discount.  And if you spend a certain amount you can get free shipping.  Not sure if they do that in the UK.

They also carry some different soy/rice/almond milks.  They have the powdered kind which I haven't tried.  And a few brands of the aseptic packaged kind.

I worked in a movie theater for several years.  We made the popcorn with a ton of oil and butter flavoured salt.  So, very bad :)

I recommend skipping it.  I don't even want to know how much weight I gained snacking on popcorn during my breaks.

Pregnancy & Parenting Increasing Milk Supply Jul 17 2008

I had a bit of a problem with my milk supply as well.  I did the whole pumping while she nursed, pumping a bit after she was done, fed her on demand,  and drank the nasty mother's milk tea.  It worked for me and increased my supply.  It was tedious.  My daughter nursed constantly.  But we got through it.

Good luck.  It sounds like you are doing everything you need to.

Weight Loss eating clean Jul 17 2008

I am a mostly clean eating vegan.  One thing that I thought was neat, this might sound silly, was that after a few weeks my taste buds seemed more able too pick up the more delicate taste of veggies and other food.  Usually food seemed bland since I was used to over processed sugary crap.

I also want to recommend the new magazine Clean Eating.  They do use some processed food but have a lot of recipes for simple healthy food.

Foods did you know smoothies are bad for you? Jul 13 2008

Juicing and blending are two totally different things.  Juicing can loose some nutrients but with blending you are still keeping the whole fruit.  And yes the sugar in fruit can be bad for you if you eat a ridiculous amount of fruit.  I have a smoothie everyday and I am far from overweight.

And peanut butter is good for you as long as you don't buy something crappy like Jiff.  Those have tons of added sugar and salt.

Pregnancy & Parenting Slings vs. Carriers for Newborns, Your thoughts/experiences please Jul 03 2008

I am obsessed with baby carriers.  I highly suggest a sling.  My daughter lived in one for the first 6 months.  She was really needy and always had to be held.  I have a Peanut Shell that I really like.  They have really pretty fabric.  And I have a Karma Baby mesh sling which is great for hot weather and wearing your baby in a pool or ocean.

I recommend getting a more structured carrier once they are older though.  I absolutely love Beco carriers.  I have found it to be the most comfortable.  I also have a hand made Mei Tai and a Mypouch.  I like them both pretty well.  I had an ergo but hated it!

Beco's are more expensive but my daughter is 21 months old and I can still carry her in it.  If you are interested in getting a carrier I highly recommend going to babywearer.com.  They have a for sale or trade forum where you can buy used carriers.  I got my Beco for about 70 dollars and they are usually about 120.

Recipes Tofu recipes Jun 26 2008

My favorite thing to do with tofu is to add it to salads.

I buy Nasoya firm or extra firm.  Found in the produce section.  But any brand should work.  Just don't get silken for this.

I cut the tofu into 4 slabs then place a towel on top, a cutting board on top of that, and something heavy like a bag of flour or a pot.  I let it sit for about 15 minutes.  You don't have to do this it just squeezes out some water.

I heat about a tablespoon of oil over medium heat, cube the tofu, then saute until it is golden brown, about 15 minutes.  Stirring the whole time.

I keep this in the fridge and just toss with salad.  Sometimes I add it to other dishes.  And my toddler loves to eat this on its own.

This is pretty simple without any marinade but I like it.

Vegetarian Vitamins for vegetarians? Jun 23 2008
00:02 (UTC)

If you have a health food store near you they will sell vitamins that are specially formatted for vegetarians.  If you can't get to a health food store there are many on-line stores that cater towards vegetarians and vegans.  I like to order through veganstore.com.

Good luck!

Weight Loss Master Cleanse anyone? Jun 22 2008
12:46 (UTC)
36

I have never done a master cleanse because I don't think I have the will power for it.  But I do think that fasting is good for you.  When I go through a phase of eating a lot of junk I like to do a water fast for 24-48 hours.  I feel like it resets my body.  I stop craving junk.

I have always been told that fasting is good for you because it allows your body to focus on cleansing itself of toxins, which it can do while you are eating but sense it isn't working on digesting and all that it can dedicate all its time to that.

But a lot of people do get really mad about fasting (as can be seen in the above posts).  I have had people yell at me for doing a 24 hour fast.

Good luck with your cleanse!

Hello.  I am living on a base in South Carolina.  My husband is still here but away at school most of the day.  I have a lot of trouble getting motivated as well.  I keep making friends that I go out with and then they move away.

I have heard a lot of the guys my husband goes to school with say there must be something in the water here because the wives move here and they are slim then they gain tons of weight.  That has been a bit of a motivator for me to not become one of those women.

This base has a fitness center where they offer a wide variety of exercise classes like yoga and pilates.  As long as I take my ID with me the classes are only $1 .  I have also started going to a stroller strides exercise class.  Have you checked to see if you all have any?
