Original Post by mommakitty: It varies. An example: http://www.ncsl.org/programs/health/genetics/ dnasexoffen.htm It's an interesting list of how different states treat the SoL issue when DNA evidence is involved. Identically worded statutes on the list can lead to different results depending on how the law interacts with the rest of that state's criminal code. |

| Weight Loss | Question about starvation mode. | Nov 15 2008 05:47 (UTC) |

Original Post by jay2daq: I never said that you were lying to the forum about whether or not you feel hungry. I'm saying that when you're in starvation mode for any significant amount of time, YOU WON'T KNOW WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY. You may still have occaisional hunger pains. Those pains are an indication that your already starved body is really hurting.

I'm sure it wasn't an overnight change for you. I don't know how you might have gotten to this point. I know a lot of people can get so busy that they forget to eat for very long stretches of time. Do that often enough and your body stops signaling. It doesn't have to start with full days of starving. I had mono and was literally too tired to cook for myself, order a pizza or do much of anything. Yes, at first I was hungry. But eventually my body got used to not having the food and stopped whining at me. I dropped to 120 lbs which, at 5'7" is extremely bad. Once I was able to eat even a little bit more I gained a lot of fat. As my mom says to me, "I know you're not hungry. Eat it anyway." Today for instance, I had a migraine so felt sick all day. I totalled up my cals and came up with about 800 - and I'm not hungry. I'm currently 3/4 of the way through a glass of chocolate milk, just because I need the calories. It's not pleasant, but it's necessary. |

| Weight Loss | Scale Question! | Nov 14 2008 04:45 (UTC) |

At my gym, I weighed myself before and after my shower. I have long hair, it holds a lot of water. The scale didn't seem to understand that since it said I was a pound lighter. Scales lie. |

I believe the advice says 1 - 2 lbs per week. That extra lb is pretty damn significant, makes me think you're going too hard.

Wow, Cambodia? Count yourself lucky that you don't have McDs or Walmart. A protein bar is a glorified candy or granola bar. They're usually pretty nutrient and calorie dense and focus on protein (surprise surprise). Most are low on sugars so they are less likely to make you get a sugar high and crash. I'm a fan of Clif bars because they're less cloyingly sweet than other brands. http://www.clifbar.com/ |

exfoliate! for my face, I tried an insane variety of cleansers. Eventually, I figured out that all I needed to do was scrub well with hot water. The sweat is probably making your dead skin cells cling to your body & clogging pores. |

We're the same height so I have to say I'm impressed if you ever get to 126 and remain healthy. This website lists that as underweight, though I've seen other calculators that call it healthy. That calculator, btw, said the ideal weight is 140.8. Personally, when I drop below 129 my immune system ceases to function. I'm only 8 lbs heavier than you at the moment, my sedentary burn is 1710 and I'm almost 10 years older than you so I need less. Eat more. If you start going above 140, then maybe think about cutting back on the calories again. Good job on losing the weight, but there is a time to STOP trying to lose. Enjoy that you've reached that moment and have a pizza. |

lol, I suppose so but I'd prefer to have trouble eating than go off the pills. I'm on a generic version of seasonale so I only have my period 3 or 4 times a year. I won't give up the drugs for anything short of certain death. |

I told my doc about the dizzy spells. I forgot to mention the problems with eating. I don't usually think about it except when it's happening. My diet doesn't change much. I've never been a big fan of fluids but I've been trying over the past few months. I know, I'm a freak. I hate drinking water. The smoothie is a good idea, I'll give it a shot if I hit a full cycle again. It really seems related to being hungry, but I don't think I should be feeling sick to the point where it's difficult to eat, out of hunger. For example, it hit me on Monday after I got home from playing soccer. I'd somehow only eaten about 550 and it was 8pm. I went to the store to get food and just looking at some of the vegetables and thinking about eating them made me gag. I got home with my taco dip and chips, still felt sick, ate them anyway and no longer felt sick. Which, yay, solution for the problem. But even that one evening of over-hunger has me feeling a little hungry/sick every day this week. I'm hoping that if I concentrate on eating my maintenance it'll go away. It really interferes with motivation to cook. =( |

| Weight Loss | what do you do when you get a craving? | Jul 08 2008 06:04 (UTC) |

I don't crave sweets much, but I like to get Smucker's Magic Shell and dip strawberries in it. No, it doesn't harden, however the coating of chocolate is fairly thin and a little covers a lot of berries. 2 tbsp has 210 cals and the strawberries are negligible so it's easy to work into your daily numbers. |

I'm surprised you even survive on that. If you eat more you'll gain weight because your body is in starvation mode right now. That's in the short term. Eventually your body should adjust to a normal metabolism and fat will come off. At least, I think that's what's happening based on what I've gleaned from these forums. |

I don't really have the teen perspective you're looking for, but I do have a thought. Check out what the fancier restaurants in your area are serving. See if you can chat with the chefs or manager about the calorie levels of their entres, desserts, etc. What I have noticed is that these nicer, more expensive restaurants have healthier portion sizes, rely less on high calorie carbs, use more veggies and use herbs and spices for flavor over fatty options. Go to the fancy restaurant every once in a while for whatever reason you think of (or no reason at all - good food is a reason all by itself). Use the trips to inspire home cooking. Doing this helped put the nail in the coffin of (most) of my unhealthy eating habits. Be a food snob. As my best friend says, "Just because I'm a snob doesn't mean I'm wrong." As for exercise, no idea how to help other than maybe ask her if she could be your workout buddy because you need help staying on the wagon. Good luck! Edited to add: someone suggested dance as an activity... at her age she'd be far behind her age group in a lot of disciplines. Be very careful to stay away from something that's competitive unless/until she shows some talent that could make up for her lack of experience. It's very discouraging to be even 2 or 3 years behind your age group (personal experience), she'd be at something like 7 - 9 years behind. Stick to activities she can grow into as an adult (running, swimming, etc). |

"a meat, corn, mashed potatoes w/ gravy and biscuits-3 starches-" Sadly, a lot of people don't realize that they should count fresh corn in the carb column instead of veggie. The culture thing can run very deep and be hard to shake, even if you know intellectually that you should eat differently. My mom is from a small town in WA, lives in WI, and is 65+. I try to get her to eat my healthy foods. She indulges me when we eat out somewhere and usually enjoys it, even if she calls it "yuppie" food. But it doesn't feel homey to her. She actually gets weepy sometimes when we talk about menus because what I want - lots of veggies with herbs & brown rice or pasta - couldn't possibly satisfy a person and she feels like a bad mother if she cooks it for me. Fortunately what's homey to her is still fairly healthy, even if it contains a bit more meat, gravy and/or cream sauces than I would prefer. |

Remember that the intended audience is the average American who still tries to use fad diets to get results and never exercises. I'd lay odds that she gave dumbed down advice that the producers thought people could readily understand and would make viewers get that fluffy happy feeling. Okay, so I hate the Today show. I'd trust the people here for advice over a tv doc. |

I'd say exercise extra but don't try for a greater deficit. You might be able to prevent your body from storing those extra cals as fat. But that's just a guess, I have no expert basis for the opinion. If nothing else, the hypothetical person might feel less bad about binging. |

Part of the problem has to do with our farm subsidies. It's much cheaper to make/sell foods that are high in carbs but are less likely to fill you up. Eating healthy can get expensive in both time and money. A lot of people don't even know some of the basics on how to cook. Plus what people have been saying here about how the primary measure of value is quantity, not quality. There are ways to compensate for the value problem. In almost every restaurant here you can get a "doggy bag" if you can't finish your meal. When I was in Europe several years ago, I confused wait staff a bit when I asked for a box for my food. |

It's an intramural group through the University rec department. We're quite awful but it's fun. Today most of our team was down from injuries. We only had 2 girls & 3 guys for the first half making us 2 players down. I couldn't rotate out at all. This was my first time playing in over a year - I had a back injury for the past two weeks that had me on bed rest during our first games.

A 5'7" adult F is underweight at 127. You and I are the same height and as a runner at 133 - 135 you will look skinny, healthy and able to wear any swimsuit/bikini you want. I promise. In high school I was one of those insanely active kids running cross country, dancing, and swimming almost every day. If you're vigorously training you do not need to worry about limiting your intake. You should probably just focus on eating whenever you're hungry and developing a taste for healthy food.

My advice would be to dump him because he sounds too controlling. But then I'm quite jaded about men and relationships. He can't force you to eat the dessert. If he drags you off to whatever place, don't order anything. He might order something for himself. He might even order something for you. Just sit there and watch him eat whatever it is. Hopefully, this will embarrass him enough to listen to you. If that's too extreme, at the ice cream place you could ask for just the fresh fruit toppings without the ice cream. |

I like to use http://www.epicurious.com for ideas because the search engine pulls from a number of different sources. It allows members (free) to add reviews which usually include variations on the original recipe. Since a lot of people want to cut calories out of their life you can usually find good substitutions for the fattiest entries. It's also really nice for those times you want something that LOOKS fancy & complicated to impress visitors. I am a firm believer in the healthiness of pizza - the homemade kind anyway. It's one of the only foods I know of that can provide a serving from every food group. My favorite only takes a half hour before tossing it in the oven - even using a mix for the crust. I start with a layer of baby spinach, covered with tomato sauce, onions, green peppers and minced garlic. For cheese I use a mix of part-skim mozzarella & goat cheese. The finishing touch of pineapple goes on top of the cheese so it doesn't make the crust soggy. |

pretty much nothing. I generally keep my place empty of things to snack on. I made some tater tots and had some chili for lunch. I may try to convince myself that cereal is just as good as fatty salsa con queso. |

I can never seem to do the tumble turns properly so it's nice that I have an excuse to not make the attempt. Good thought on mixing arm & leg strokes. It's only on the one side but I don't think it's an infection. I've been having problems there for years. ETA: I saw the doctor and am no longer allowed to exercise for a month. Except I can swim in 3 or 4 days. She gave me vicodin though so I'm happy. |

As for fixing the immediate problem, can you ask her to ditch the uniform dress style idea? I've always thought that weddings where the bridesmaids wear the same colors in different styles looks far classier. Also, the bride looks more considerate for not requiring them to purchase a dress they also will only wear once. |

I like to make a potato hash in the mornings because I can leave it cooking on the stove while I take a shower. Boiling the potatoes ahead of time makes it go faster, but you can cook them sufficiently starting raw. Chopped green peppers go in with the potatoes or shortly after. I like my onions on the raw side so I throw that in about 5 - 10 min before I eat. I usually cook it with fresh dill then season with a pinch of celery salt. I top it with goat cheese or feta but cooking sausage in works too. |
