Weight Loss What's in your desk drawer? snacks? meal replacements? May 20 2009

I'm a big believer in keeping snacks in my desk drawer.  Often, I don't have time to eat lunch, so keeping food in that drawer is very important.  Right now I have a wide selection of Fiber One granola bars (chocolate, peanut butter, caramel), a selection of fruit (today it was a choice between a nectarine or a pear) and low-cal microwavable popcorn.

The fridge at work also has a selection.  Light String Cheese, hard boiled eggs and light yogurt.

So a couple things that I was hoping to get everyones thoughts on today.

I'm taking a Zumba class tonight.  Has anyone ever tried it?  What should I expect?  I'm pretty out of shape ... Will I be embarrassed?

I'm meeting with a nutritionist next week to see if maybe she can help me in this weight loss journey.  Has anyone does this before?  Was it helpful?  I know a lot of people think nutritionists are a waste of time and money and I'm interested in hearing the perspective too.  What can I expect to gain from her?

Health & Support Possible to be overweight by undereating? Oct 10 2008

I'm starting to think maybe this is me ... maybe this is the solution I've been looking for.  I eat balanced meals and count absolutely every single calorie, but I rarely eat over 1,000 calories a day, typically between 500 and 800.  Once or twice a week I will go out for a meal and eat a "regular" meal.  On those days I will typically eat about 1600 - 1800 calories.  Last week I think I had a day where I ate 1900 and was really upset.  Yet, my body will not lose weight, and if it does, it does it at a snails pace.  I will sometimes see a weight drop mid week, but when I have that one (just one) "larger" meal, my weight will shoot up to where it started and often higher.

Now I'm thinking maybe I should start eating more.  More like 1400 - 1600 calories and see how that works out ...

I have been avoiding weighing in ... I'm hoping that an extra day will cause my weight to go down a bit.

Zena - I'm in the same boat as you with the alcohol thing.  I just can't decide which is the best method for me - work my evening glass of wine (sometimes two glasses) into my calories for the day or avoid it completely?  I come from a big Italian family and a glass of wine with dinner has just always been a part of my life.  Part of me thinks that I should learn to work the wine in with my calories because my evening glass is such a big part of my lifestyle and culture (this goes back to the whole nostalgia issue), but another part of me thinks if I'm going for an overall lifestyle change why not make the change to eliminate my nightly glass?

Anyone else a "glass a day" girl or guy?  How did you handle this situation?

So I've been doing a really good job at sticking to my calories -- counting everything, and trying to get exercise whenever I can.  That being said ... I went a little over board last night.  I ate about 1900 calories last night ... I met up with an old college roommate that I hadn't seen in nearly 2 years and had Shabbat dinner with her family.  It was one of the most amazing meals I have ever had and, needless to say took advantage of the amazing food.  I'm not Jewish and rarely partake in the festivities, so it was a very special meal for me not a weekly ritual.  In college Shabbat dinner was a big Friday night event for us so I partially participated (aka ate) so much because of nostalgia more then wanting to eat.  Either way, I'm a bit concerned about ruining my progress.  I realize that one meal is not going to ruin my success but I wish I could just enjoy a meal without being paranoid.  Does anyone else get this way?  How long does it take for the feeling to go away?

So I have a question ... something that I've been reading on forums that doesn't make sense to me:

A lot of people have posted that working out has slowed down their weight loss.  This doesn't make sense to me.  Since you are burning calories working out and working out is supposed to speed up your metabolism, how would this slow down weight loss?  I understand the whole building muscle thing, but I can't image you're really building that much muscle ... will someone please explain this to me?

So I've been looking at this thread and thinking about joining and then deciding not to.  I'm nervous that I'm going to be a big let down to my team ... but I could really use the motivation and the encouragement of teammates.  That being said ... count me in!

I'm 25, getting married next fall (thus motivated to lose weight for the big day), 5'2, currently 177.4 lbs.  I started out at 185 and, long term, would like to get down to 120 lbs, but short term, I would love to see 150 again!

I'm really looking forward to this and promise to be a great motivator and friend to my teammates!

Weight Loss 80% Food 20% Exercise? Sep 30 2008

I, of course, agree that to truly be healthy (and after all, isn't that what weight loss is about?) you need to include both a healthy diet and exercise into you life.

But, in the matter of sheer numbers, diet is a larger part of weight loss then exercise.  If you think about it in purely the numbers sense, a half hour of brisk walking will burn about 200 calories (of course that depends on many factors, but lets just say roughly).  Meanwhile, a bowl of cereal with milk is about 200 calories (again, this depends on many factors).  So, what I'm trying to get at, is that it is easier to manipulate the "calories in, calories out" factor via dieting then it is via exercise.  Does that make sense?

By regulating calories you consume you will have a larger effect on weight loss then by exercise alone.  That being said, ideally, you must include diet and exercise into your life for optimal success.

MW -- I can so relate to the frustration you are experiencing.  I'm quite a few years out of college now (and grad school for that matter) but I remember freshman year feeling the same way.  In high school I played sports and ate very healthy, well balanced meals, but college just killed me.  Freshman year I gained 26 pounds and sophomore year I gained another 16, it was those years that got me where I am now I'm afraid.  I commend you greatly for taking control of things now.  The first step is really awareness.  I really think that had I done what you are doing now (taking the steps toward weight control) I would not be where I am now.

Yeah!!!!  So that's a loss of 3.8 pounds this week!  I'm so excited!  There are areas of improvment this week, however.  I really need to focus on getting more exercise and on portion control.  I've been really strict about my calories and have not felt deprived once, it's been a really good week!

My financee has, finally, decided to be my partner/supportive with all of the weightloss stuff.  My fiancee is in very good shap, he's naturally thin, but he's seen himself gain weight over the last year (when we made the move from Boston to Wisconsin) and I think he's interested in getting in shape himself so hopefully that will me be even more motivated.  Congrats melika and scoobster on your weightlosses!

Just to confirm, we are doing weigh-ins on Sundays, right?  Last Sunday I weighed in at 181.2 and I cheated a little and weighed myself this morning (just to motivate myself, not to be obsessive, I promise) and I as 179 even!  So I'm down 2.2 pounds thus far this week with a few more days to go!  I, however, continue to struggle with the same two things:

  • Motivation to exercise -- I'm stuck on this idea that getting my 7-8 hours of sleep a night is much more important then getting up early to exercise.  Any thoughts on which is more important?  Sacrifice sleep or sacrifice my workout?
  • Debating between eating tons of low cal foods (mostly veggies) or eating a smaller portion of "normal" foods.  My fiancee is in good shape (he's thin, but not necessarily healthy) and doesn't worry about his weight so he eats whatever he wants.  I want to eat with him and "share the experience" that eating is supposed to be, but I end up having to eat very small portions that don't always end up satisfying me.

Any thoughts on either of this issues would be greatly appreciated!

I'm glad so many people have joined on, I'm very hopeful that this group will keep me accountable.  My biggest problem, also, is keeping committed for longer then just a few weeks.

So far today - with dinner still coming - I have had cereal with milk for breakfast (about 220 cals), for lunch some tuna fish with a little low fat miracle whip (about 150) and a snack that consisted of shrimp and a glass of wine (about 250 calories).  So far I seem to be on track for today with 620 and about 580 left for dinner.  I try to stay under 1200 calories and most days I actually stay under 1000.  So off to the grocery store to pick up some dinner, hopefully I can stay on target!

I'll join in!  I would really like to be able to do this!  When I first saw your post I thought that 15-20 lbs by Thanksgiving would be impossible, but in reality, Thanksgiving is 10 weeks from yesterday.  That's a 2 lbs per week weightloss which is both possible and healthy.  So I'm in!  Here are my stats:

25 yeas old

180 (more or less, I will get a more exact number)

5'2

I'm getting married next fall, so I'm trying to get my body in wedding shape.  I haven't bought my dress yet and probably won't be buying it until Feburary or so, so I'm hoping to lose as much weight as possible before then.

Wow, weddingmama, you were the first person to write in a week.  I guess everyone got caught up in the holiday weekend.  I've been slipping as well.  I really need to refocus, I'm very disappointed in myself.  Work has been crazy and I've been using that as my excuse, but this week has slowed down significantly (I work in crisis public affairs so each week varies) so I need to use this down time to refocus.

This weekend a close family friend had a 4th of July party and a lot of people told me how good I looked and asked how much weight I lost, etc. So that was a huge uplifter.  I've only lost 11 pounds but I carry my weight very, very well (I'm very blessed) so small amounts of weightloss make a big difference.  So that felt really good and definitely will work as a motivator.  So these friends have a house on the lake so we go there for all the "summer holidays," mainly Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.  So my new goal is to have an even greater reaction when I see the same people on Labor Day.

So I'm down 2 pounds this week, which is fantastic.  I haven't lost more than a pound a week in about a month, so this is definitely great news.  But the strangest thing is that I can feel myself slipping away from my regimen.  I had cake and ice cream yesterday.  Yes, both, it was to celebrate a co-workers upcoming wedding.  But, despite eating the cake and ice cream, I did factor it into my calories for the day, so it's not like it was thoughtless eating.  But I have been very lax lately on my dieting.  I have eaten things in the last week or two that a month ago I would never eat.  I'm definitely not giving time to exercise, it's like I'm not even trying to pretend that I'm trying anymore.  Anyway, the moral of the story is that I need to get back into it.  I need to re-commit myself.  I just don't want to be one of those people that falls off.

Good Morning, everyone!  I apologize that I have been MIA for a few days.  I took a quasi break from my routine this weekend.  I didn't go crazy or anything, no binging, but, I didn't stick to the healthy diet I typically do.  I had a few glasses of wine one night, had a scoop of ice cream one day, even had an enchalata one night, but I didn't go crazy the rest of the day.  Despite all of that I lost a pound this week!  So I am happy!
