| Fitness | Swimmers - breathing/technique advice? | Nov 01 2009 00:10 (UTC) |

If you are not very skilled in swimming, I definitely suggest joining your local USMS Master's swimming team. The practices are usually about an hour every day or every other day. And you can learn better technique and other strokes. Since you are probably only going to do freestyle in a triathlon, though, there are a couple of freestyle drills that can improve your stroke. 1. Learn to breath on both sides so you can breath every three strokes (or 5 or 7 as the person above said). However, for the race and for your triathlon training, I would breath every other stroke and breath on the same side. 2. You can do a drill to get your arms in the correct position. Basically do the stroke normally but you let your fingertips glide on the top of the water SLOWLY. This will get your elbows in the proper angle and help keep your fingers together and eventually cupped. 3. Another drill is what I call the stop and go (I'm not sure what it's actually called). You stroke one arm and then before you pull it back you stroke with your other arm until they are parallel but NOT touching. This drill also helps with breathing. This can be done with or without a pull buoy. 4. For kicking, I would suggest using a kickboard and extend your arms out on the kickboard (ie. your face should not be on the board and hands at the backend of the board). 5. For breathing, do the 10x100 yds (or meters depending on the pool type) with a pull buoy. Go odd 25 yds every 3 strokes breath and even every 5 (or do 5 on odd and 7 on even). |

| Weight Loss | So you HAVE to eat your calarie intake they give you everyday? | Jun 17 2008 23:43 (UTC) |

I've heard that the not eating later at night is a myth. What are you eating for your calories? What is your workout? How long have you been doing this?

If you like the taste, drink it. But it's definitely not something you should do to lose weight. |

| Weight Loss | Is there any danger in eating a really big meal? | Jun 17 2008 01:08 (UTC) |

It's definitely not good for your blood sugar as others have mentioned, which would be the major concern. I would disagree with some others though that having a "cheat" day is a good idea. I know one person that rather than make a day be that if they do everything they were supposed to for the week (eg. exercise regulary and eat better) that they have a small ice cream on Sunday as a treat. That way you are still eating nutriously the whole day and rewarding with a small treat. I would guess that that is way more than 1100 calories too. Bread and cereal will have a lot of calories. Have you put it into calorie count to see? The thing that gets me when I'm too busy to eat, which ends in a megameal, is I will get the runs the next day. Not fun! I don't like megameals also because my stomach expands and then all the work you have done to shrink it by eating smaller meals just goes bye bye. |

Change up your workout routine and possibly intensify it. |

| Fitness | What's the difference between a weighted squat and a deadlift? | Jun 15 2008 02:50 (UTC) |
|
A squat you do with the bar behind your neck and your arms holding onto the bar on each side. You squat like you are trying to go to the bathroom and keep your eyes facing forward and your back as straight as you can. You go to about 90 degrees knee angle (no more than that). A deadlift is rarely ever done with a normal barbell or a dumbell with novices. It is a special machine (basically a funny shaped barbell) that you step into the middle and has handles on both sides. Once you get good at doing them with that machine you can start using a barbell. I never did deadlifts when I was weight training (for of all things, golf. Improved my distance). I always did squats. I felt it was safer for my back since I have scoliosis. The way we trained as beginners was to do bench press 3x3, 3x5, 5x5, and then max out each for one week. Then you start over at 80% your max out. Everything else you do reps of like 10 or 15. |

Put it (tuna) on a salad like with lettuce and olives and stuff. I know this sounds gross, but I had it when I was in spain and it was really good. Although, this one had corn on it as well. |

I agree with Duke. If this prevents you from going on a big binge of junk foods, then why not. I would suggest making sure your other calories that day get you all your vitamins and stuff though. |

I would caution you against rewarding yourself with anything that costs money. That would still be an unhealthy habit. Think of something that you do to relax to reward yourself. Maybe playing a video game or spending some time playing basketball or something. |

There is always the option of protein shakes or smoothies with additives. Those have a lot of calories, but have yogurt and fruit + protein in them. However, has he seen a Doctor? There could be something medically wrong and it's best to have that checked out before changing his diet rapidly. |

I just read an article debunking detoxing. Detoxing is a big gimmick that doesn't do anything. Supposedly supposed to clean out your colon and blood, but your kidneys, liver, and colon do fine on their own. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-373 209/Scientists-explode-detox-myth.html However, they mention that water and sleep is what you need to "detox". I assume it is because it passes through your kidneys or whatever until you pee out all your toxins. |

Stress or rapid weight loss can make you lose your period. Or there could be a problem. I would consult a Dr. |
