Me!  :)  I'm running a half on 9/14.  I don't know how fast I'll be, but then I'm never really fast.  I took a bit of time off this summer to shake the feeling that running had become a chore, and because post-marathon I didn't have any good goals and I seem to need a goal.  But I'm really excited now about running again and about training.

Hey guys, please move me over to the hiatus list.  :(  I'm definitely still running, but I don't think I will be on CC much now and I don't believe I will be posting my totals.  If that changes I'll definitely come back, but I think the list should only be for active CCers and I'm afraid I won't qualify anymore.

Best of luck with finishing the last 45% of the 'race'!  You guys are awesome, and I have really enjoyed being part of this experience.  :)  Here's wishing you PRs when you most want them, sometimes when you least expect them; mostly sunny skies with the right amount of cloud cover and a gentle breeze; friends to run with in person, online friends to share running stories; money enough for a good pair of running shoes at all times; and most of all, here's wishing you constant joy in running, even when it sometimes hurts.

Unfortunately, yes.  And, as a society I think we have a tendancy to disbelieve that which we want to disbelieve.  If you truly want the answer to be A, and someone tells you B, it's going to take a lot for you to be convinced of A.  That doesn't hold true for everyone, but it holds true for enough people that repetitive posts and questions like you mention will probably always exist.

Hey guys, 35.6 for me last week.  And, I guess I'm going to have to scale back and do some cross training.  Potential marathon #2 is not going to happen.  :/  My 22 miler turned into a 12.5 miler with hubby picking me up because I couldn't hobble home.  My ankle and foot are telling me that I need to take some more recovery time, apparently.  :/  Nothing major I don't think.  I felt great up until mile 8 and then the pain started to get pretty bad, so I believe I can continue to run shorter distances.  We'll see...

wrm and primadonna, congrats on your races! 

This morning I ran the St Patrick's Parade Day Run in downtown St Louis.  There were somewhat over 8000 runners, the vast majority of which registered as 'non-competitive' runners.  You don't have to be a fast runner to be considered 'competitive', you just have to pay an extra $3 and register by an earlier date.  Competitive runners started first, and had chip timing.  I lined up a the back of the competitive pack, but the non-competitive runners started about a minute later and were soon passing me by in droves.  That wasn't so much fun, since I usually start in the back and pick people off.  I'm not used to having people stream by me.  :)

It was a much prettier day than expected.  Forecast was for relatively heavy rain, but it barely sprinkled the whole time, and it was just the right amount at that.  About 45 degrees for the temp.

I've got a 20 miler scheduled tomorrow, so my goal was to finish around 55 minutes, nice and easy but still a tempo pace for me.  Every mile was right around 11:00 except for mile 3 which I did in 9:55.  So, my final chip time was 54:11.

So, my official stats:  30 years old, 8k (5 mile) race, 54:11 chip time.  And I am quite pleased with that!!  :D

Considering that last sentence, it sounds to me like you are a 'real runner'.  :)  Runners are those people who love to run, who go out and try to be better than they were the day before.  Who run no matter that sometimes they just don't feel like it.  Who know that running isn't always enjoyable, but it is always rewarding.  Who finish the race, who keep going, no matter how other people question their sanity.  :)

Real runners don't have to be fast enough to win a race - they just have to be crazy enough to keep going out their door (or getting on the TM) when other people would have long ago thrown in the towel.

If I'm going to be out for more than 75-90 minutes regardless of temp, or if I am going to be out any time in high temps and/or humidity, yes, I carry water.

But, in the winter it might not have looked like I was.  I have these little water bottles that attach to a hydration belt.  In the winter instead of wearing the belt I just tucked the bottles into the inside pockets of one of my inner jacket layers, so they were closer to my body and didn't freeze as quickly.  Rather than looking like I was carrying a water bottle, I just looked a little chunkier.  :)  So, if someone is layered for the cold you never know if they have water on them or not.  :)

Co sign!  :)  Of course, it takes a special kind of crazy to be called crazy by another runner.  :)

I am so excited, I did my first ever serious hill workout last night and I'm not the least bit sore today!  (Everywhere I run is hilly, and I always try to run up hills faster than I run flats.  But this was the first time I specifically incorporated repeats on a hill.)

2 miles in a very hilly neighborhood, then 5 sets of up and down a .2 mile hill with a 70 foot elevation change.  (I don't know how that compares, but it was a very steep hill, the kind I avoid when I'm on my bike and in heavy traffic.)  Then 3 more miles in a hilly neighborhood to finish for 7 miles total.  My pace when charging up the hill repeats was a full minute per mile faster than my average pace on the run, and I definitely burned some calories!  :)

I agree with the above.  It also hugely depends on your running goals - if you are a high mileage distance runner vs someone running 10-15 miles a week with goals of 5k races.  Both are perfectly respectable, but would have different training to accomodate.

For a serious distance runner who wanted to incorporate weights, I think a good schedule would look something like this:

Sun - long run; Mon - recovery run; Tues - speed work; Wed - easy or mid-long run; Thurs - no running, heavy leg weights; Fri - easy run; Sat - easy run

I know standard weight theory is to lift each muscle group twice per week, but runners are a bit less likely to lift in general, it seems.  And it can be hard for some runners to incorporate two quality leg days when they also have speedwork and a good sized long run.  But, this is for people who are doing higher miles (and of course some who run 50 miles a week won't have any trouble getting in 2 quality lift days, I guess, although I am not personally familiar with any higher mileage runners that do much lifting). 

If you are running under 20 a week and are relatively fit, I see no reason not to do legwork twice - if that is what you want to do.  If your long run is in the 6-7 mile range max you don't need a recovery run and could lift on Monday instead, for example.

ETA - I know a lot of this might not apply to the OP, but I thought it was relative to the conversation regardless.  :)

Hehe.  Well, one, I am far from a fast runner and pounding out the long relatively slow distances doesn't seem to do much damage.  The one coming up is in my hometown, so I won't have to travel like I did for the first.

And, to be honest, I would like a do over.  :)  What you described about your previous run that didn't work out so well is exactly what happened to me in the marathon.  If I could have quit at mile 15 I would have!  Once I got past that I was fine, but I missed my 'worst case scenario' goal time by a good bit.  I know I can do better, and if the next couple of weeks go well I'm going to give it a shot.  :)

Great challenge!  :)  I am cheating a bit, since I was already signed up for the St Patrick's day parade run in downtown St Louis.  It's a 5 mile distance on Saturday, so count me in for the 8k. 

It's my first official 5 mile race, so it's a PR no matter what, but I'll try and hustle a bit extra for the challenge.

Hey guys, long time no see!  :)  I am so, so very glad that you all jumped on the virtual race thing!  I’ve been taking advantage of my recent ability to not be on CC constantly, and honestly completely forgot about setting up any kind of virtual race for the spring.  I am more than happy to completely turn over the reigns for that kind of thing, so any time someone wants to start one, please do so by all means.  I’m just a regular around here now.  :)  In the past (if I recall) I tried to give about 10 weeks warning, as that seems a good time frame to work up from not running at all to running a 5k.  That way it would reel in as many newbies as possible.

In other news, if you can take a lump sum rather than a weekly breakdown, my mileage for the last few weeks has been 40.7.  Not a lot, because my taper turned into a lot of cross training, and then I took some time off…  after finishing my first marathon!  I'm gearing up for possible marathon #2 right now, so I should have a couple of higher mileage weeks in the next month.

Slight hijack - curlygirl, your Cooper is adorable!  I took down the pics I had of Sienna, my beagle, and photobucket is blocked from work so I cannot repost right now.  But now I want to scan in her baby pics when I get home and post them.  ;)

This to me is the only thing that mattered in this whole thread.  She never asked for advice on whether she should or should not put the dog down.  She came into a supposed support community asking for support, and instead she got a bunch of unwarranted opinions, conjecture and speculation on her situation.  That's just rude.

team_malone, I hope today is a bit brighter, and I wish you and your family nothing but the best since I know there will be a bit of a healing process as you get used to your new home dynamic.  Big hugs to you and yours.

Again Lyn, my heart goes out to you.  Just remember it's easy enough for people to judge, and it's easy enough for them to kick you when you are down.  Obviously this wasn't easy for you, obviously you care about animals or you wouldn't have adopted the dog 3 years ago.  If the vet said you did the right thing, then you did the right thing.  Don't let people make you feel worse, especially when you were only trying to find some small bit of comfort.  Take care of yourself.

Lyn, I'm sure this is incredibly hard for you.  And, since it sounds like the deed has already been done, I hope people aren't hard on you about it.  :(  It's never an easy decision to make, and it was wonderful of you to give her 3 good years after the first 7 that might have been a bit rough.

Truly, a 10 year old dog would be very difficult to adopt out.  I hope you can cherish the memories and move on as best you can.

It depends on who you ask.  My dermatologist says that no food has any impact on skin, but I definitely know better.  He didn't see the marked improvement when I quit drinking coffee, nor does he see the small blips that occur a week or so after I down a good bit of dairy.

For me, most of my acne has been hormonal.  But most definitely different foods help or hurt.  The best thing I've found is to experiment by cutting something out of your diet for 30 days and see what the difference is.  Try and take before and after pictures for comparison's sake.

Remember that acne can often take a week or two to develop, so cutting something out of your diet for just a few days won't give you true results.

Just goes to show how subjective taste is.  I eat Amy's all the time and love it, but you couldn't force feed me Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisine, WW or any of those kinds.  Blech.

Hehe.  I've now run in Asics, Adidas, Nike and Reebok.  The Reebok's I'm in right now are my favorites so far, but I only have 92 miles on them and I usually don't start having issues with shoes until after 100 miles.  I keep trying to find the pair that holds up for 300 miles without causing me issues, and until I do I'll keep getting fitted for new ones.  :)  (Right now the Nike's have 205 miles on them, and once I started rotating them with the Reebok's they got a lot better, so I'm thinking I may just permanently rotate between two different pair.)

Honestly, it's not just obsessive, it's dangerous.

I am 5 weeks out from a marathon and will peak my mileage in the next two weeks.  Even considering I'm at the peak of my training I won't be spending more than 10 hours tops doing cardio.  And I'm 13 years older than you and my body has long since stopped developing, so it can handle the stress much better than yours can.

Just using me as an example of a fairly extreme cardio schedule that pales in comparison to yours.

I almost always gain weight the day after a really tough workout.  For one, I eat more, so I have more food still left being digested in my body that adds to the scale.  For another, I almost always retain water.

Yesterday I ran 18 miles, and today the scale said I gained 4 pounds.  :D  I laughed, because if I know one thing it's that running that much does not make me gain weight.  I did eat 3500 calories yesterday to help my body properly recover from the run, and all that food weight was in me still.  And my normally loose wedding ring wouldn't budge this morning.

Give it time, let your body adapt, and if it really bugs you then weigh more than once a week so you can better identify the 'fake' numbers.

As a pescetarian that knows several vegetarians and vegans, I am actually quite amused by this statement.  You might consider rephrasing to say that *you* don't respect pescetarians, rather than making an assumption about every veg*an out there.  :)

Ditto to what fitnessfreak and abaker said. It's a running thing. You can have the best fitting shoes in the world and still have issues like that as a runner.

It's kind of a badge of honor, albeit an unpleasant one. :)
