I can relate. I've been a competative swimmer since I was six . . . but I never, ever had that coveted swimmer's body. I went through what you described everytime I started a new team or we had a meet (imagine being the center of attention in a swimsuit on a three foot pedastle and, oh yes, next to extremely athletic 16 year old girls)

But I am good, I am really good, actually - they called me the Sherman Tank in highschool - not great for my 16 year old self-esteem, but now I actually think that they didn't really mean anything by it - since I generally kicked all their butts down the pool during practice!

Anyway, now, as I'm walking from the locker room to the pool, I look at it as "at least I'm not sitting in front of the tv eating" . . . And then I proceed to kick everyone's butt down the pool!

I think that sounds reasonable, although I may have to do a lot of toungue biting. At least I feel better about offering some help next time he talks about how unhappy he is with his physique. Who knows, maybe he'll be chatting with you all in a few weeks!

I think that's what I'm stuggling with - whether offering advice or help will make it seem like I don't accept him the way he is.

I know, from the other side of the coin, that this affected (and still affects) my relationships. But I am also concerned about his overall health and wellbeing . . . and I just have so much "helpful" advice ;)

I guess I'm just too used to talking to girls who, with many notable exceptions, are not always direct about weight loss issues.

Sometimes I feel super hungry if I've been stressed or just haven't been getting enough sleep. Sometimes I'm just hungry!

I usually drink some water to make sure its not thirst. Then if I'm still really hungry I have a small, low-cal, high protein snack. Sometimes you are just hungry I guess - the mysteries of the human body!

I used to be in a simillar situation, although you are likely in better shape than I ever will be! I was a competative swimmer and trained for triathlons during college, but I could never lose any weight.

I finally saw some difference when I actually wrote down and tallied up my calories every day for a while for both intake and expenditure. I thought I was doing okay with figuring it out in my head, but I was way off when I actually wrote it down, especially with portion size. So maybe try being strict about logging your calories for about a week and see how it adds up.

I also got some great advice from a trainer: Rest days are important because the body is repairing and getting stronger during that time, the body is not building during the actual work out. Water and proper vitamins and minerals are important for the body to repair itself as well.

Those were my experiences, and so far I have lost about 45 lbs and feel much stronger during training than before. Otherwise you might want to check with a doctor if the weight keeps going up.

I'm not a lifter, but if I'm sore from exercise I try to take a nice warm bath or, if I don't have access to a bath, I stay a few extra minutes in the shower to stretch out (but be careful with the leg stretches, especially standing on one foot ;)).

Other than that, just stretch . . . and keep lifting!

I would recommend a body ball (they're also called yoga balls, fitness balls, etc). I got mine on sale for under $10 with a 30 min work out video (I did have to blow the ball up myself, but the pump was included!).

I like them because you can get a really intense ab workout no matter what your fitness level, and they really support your back.

Your fatigue may definitely have to do with playing piano for four hours a day. I'm in law school and I can study for 5, 6, 7, 10 hours a day around finals. I looked up "studying" in the activities section and it is 164 calories per hour - I plugged it into my activity log, and it can push my calories burned per day into the 3,000 level! Wow, my brain is hungry! So these type of "inactivity" activities do burn calories (but, of course, they do not tone muscle or increase cardiovascular endurance, both important to weight loss).

If I were you I would check how many calories you burn playing piano per day and add it to your intake. It may be that you do need over 1300 calories per day. Also remeber that your calorie deficit should only be 500-700 calories for safe, sustainable weight loss.

Checking with your doctor is a good idea too.

I would eat the peanut butter and not worry about the fat because you have a big deficit anyways. Man, I hated it when I lived at home and one of my brothers ate my dinner while I was out!

Hey,

There are a lot of calisthenic - ish moves out there, so I find it confusing too. I find that I see the most improvement with things I can be diligent about doing for a few weeks (4-6), then I might introduce something new, up the reps, or up the weight (if necessary) to keep myself working.

Right now I am doing a lot with a body/yoga ball. Its great to do sit-ups on because it is nice to my back and I can feel it with less reps (than regular crunches). And you can do so many other things with it - like bounce around your apartment when you're bored :)

So just stick with something that makes you work and you can stick with for a little while!

Hey,

I am also in law school - just started my second year. My success is that I've lost 45 pounds (ish) since Feburary. However, I gained a bunch, I don't know quite how much my first semester of law school.

My best advice would be to schedule your workouts like you would work or class (which you are doing with the trainer - good job!). My second best advice is to keep track of the calories, because even when you get super busy and can't make the workouts you can tailor your eating habits so you still have a deficit (I don't know if you are a first year, but if you are it'll get rough, and time to workout or even time to leave the library won't be there).

When we were little my parents used to put tons of vegetables through the blender and add it to whatever recipe - usually hamburger helper, but I'm sure there are lower cal alternatives. You might lose a little fiber and nutrition, but it's better than nothing, and you can add whatever vegetable you want/can stand.

I always feel really sad when I hear a story like this because it reminds me of my brother and my own childhood exeriences with being overweight. It probably depends on personality, but my brother and I do/did not react well to attempts to "encourage" weightloss. I think that was because most were negative (nagging, embarrasing me in front of relatives, taunts), and then I started associating all efforts to encourage me to lose weight with how I felt with these negative ones. Then I thought, hey I'll show them, I'll eat MORE! (Didn't say it was logical, just what happened).

So anyways what I am getting at is that I did not change until I valued my body enough to take care of it, not because of outside pressure from friends and family. I am trying to be different with my brother - a good example and not focusing on his weight so he grows up with more self esteem, and then we'll see about his weight.

Yay! I'm so glad someone else feels the way I do! I actually felt pretty awful about how I looked and all (weight, face, hair, everything) when I was a teenager. But then, with the help of friends, I decided to get over myself and enjoy life and how I looked. And it's totally true - when you think you look good, other people think you look good.

I decided I needed to lose some weight to just feel healthier about myself. I'm down about 45 lbs now at 200 even, and I thought I'd go for 165, but I have already lost some precious "assets", if you know what I mean, so maybe I won't go so far . . .

Anybody else having a simillar experience?

That I can have my cake and eat it too - at least a small slice. I've lost 43 lbs and have still managed to have fun, go out, have lazy days on the couch, travel, etc. What I want to know is how it seems so easy sometimes, and so hard at other times?

The random thing I learned was that drinking cold water will burn more calories than water at room tempurature. Every little bit counts, right?

On a simillar note . . . I started with small steps that I knew I could reach - first being within my calorie allowance, then upping the protien, then exercising, etc, etc, because I also tend toward the all or nothing attitude. I took around a week to get to the goal (ex, staying within calorie allowance), then a week to get used to it before attempting another goal. And it's been working for about 35 pounds!

I don't post much, but I just finished my first year of lawschool so I thought I might have some helpful advice (maybe) . . .

You probably already know the first year is a CHALLENGE, at all emotional, physical, intellectual, etc levels. I found that things I was able to handle before - family issues, boys, personal hygene - all became much more difficult. And you really want to do well this year (class rank, etc). So try to minimize any interference (and is really is only for a year, it will get better). Generally I found I had about two hours of "free time" a day (to do meals, work out, watch tv, take a shower), and I didn't want to spend it yelling at someone.

The best piece of advice I got pre-lawschool was to live alone. Right off the bat the pressure starts, so you don't want to be moving, having roommate OR boyfriend issues. I know that not everybody can afford that, but I would try to makesure to have a study space of your own at least (this saved the relationship of one of my friends).

I really had to be selfish about my time and energy my first year, and not everyone appreciated it. But I tried to surround myself with people who supported me (mainly other law students) and it worked out and I am excited for my second year.

BE CAREFUL around that guy!

You should definitely call the police and try to remain anonymous to him. I would say to ask him to quit, but he might be dangerous (violent) and you don't want to risk that. These things can also escalate quickly (I've lived in some bad neighborhoods), so it would be good to inform the police - they might make it seem like a hassel to them, but that is not okay and it is their job to protect you.

Please be careful and as safe as possible until then! Walk with others at night, try to avoid contact.

I had mine out in an emergency procedure! I had started college, not been to the dentist in a little while and woke up one morning in excruitiating pain. I had to get to a dentist THAT DAY! So if they are going to do to you what they did to me you will be awake throughout the procedure. It was weird, I heard teeth coming out, and one actually broke in my gums and they had to pull it out piece by piece, but I was really detatched from it all - none of it bothered me. Whatever they gave me just turned off all feeling to my mouth and all my ick factor at what was happening to me.

Anyways, I don't really remember the week after that - mmmm percacet - but I remember that I tried to eat pudding about 24 hours later and it wasn't happening, so be careful for the first few days. My savior was vanilla ice cream, it numbed my mouth and was yummy. Maybe stick to low fat/low sugar frozen stuff?

Just another way to look at the topic . . .

How do you feel when you are weak from hunger? Maybe weak? How does that translate into your workout? Maybe not as good of a workout?

From personal experience (I am not a doctor, disclaimer, etc, etc), I have found that I have a much better quality of workout when I have some energy and when I am comfortable. Otherwise I am much more likely to throw in the towel - I quit earlier and workout less intensely. And that can't be good, can it?

I did the same thing my last finals period. Actually, studying (according to this site) uses up more calories than just sitting (about 70 or 80). And when you study for 10-12 hours a day (aghh, law school), it really adds up. So maybe add it to your activity and see how many calories you are using to get through the books.

How much water did you drink? You just might have to drink more!

It also might take a little while for your body to decide to flush the water out . . . maybe give it a week, stay off the scales and see what happens.

I'm running my second this September! What distance are you running? I'm doing sprint because I think that is all the running I can handle.

I took a triathlon training class a couple of years a go in college (yay electives). The basics I remember are to start off slow (depending on your fitness level), slowly work up to three work outs a week per sport (so eventually you will be working out nine times a week), and practice transitions! (going from swim to bike to run, it is where I had the most trouble in my first race) What I started with was just doing each event for 45 to 60 minutes. Now I am working on getting long runs in and having a couple transition workouts (swimming then biking shortly there after) per week. I plan to spend a few weeks focusing on each event, then another good thing to do is wind-down the last few weeks before the event - still workout, but make it less intense so you aren't fatigued for the race.

There are also a lot of resources - books, online, classes, etc . . .

Depending on your schedual and what you like to cook, could you make dinner right after you have had lunch, or maybe even in the morning? I never want dinner food in the morning. Then just reheat it at dinner time.

I always have to start dinner about an hour after my afternoon snack, or I will be so hungry I will either eat as I go or make HUGE portions. I know that won't work for a lot of people with work and all, but just another idea.

Another idea is to make your afternoon snack a little more protein rich and it might hold you over longer.

I usually have a 350-450 cal breakfast AND then another 50-100 cal snack at about 10:30-11am. Otherwise I get super cranky and hungry. I guess it just depends on the individual b/c I know a 225 brekky wouldn't be enough for me!

Great work!!!

First you should celebrate!

Next, maybe its a good time to start maintaning calorie wise and work on toning up and building muscle? I read an article that said that one needs calories to build muscle mass, which is hard to do when you are restricting calories. Maybe then you will see those abs a little more?
