Health & Support Do I really need to fast before having bloodwork done?? May 05 2009

I've never fainted but I agree that fasting does suck! One time I was told not to eat after 10pm the night before and my test was at noon the next day. I didn't end up eating until after 2pm. I was absolutely starving. Like a few ppl mentioned, just be prepared with water and snacks so you can chow down right after they wake you up from your little power nap Wink

Yay to everyone!!! I agree that it's the little victories along the way that keep you going. Normally when I wake up and weigh myself first thing in the AM, I weigh 128. By the end of the day after eating and drinking I'm usualy about 132-133 ish. I haven't weighed myself in the morning for a while, but on Saturday I jumped on the scale around 5pm. It was my niece's communion and I had been eating like a pig and even drinking beer all day and you know what the scale said??? 129.8??!!! Wow, that must mean I lost 2 or 3 lbs. So yay to any weight loss, no matter how small, bc I haven't changed from 128 lbs in months and I was starting to g crazy!!!

Good luck to everyone and keep up the good work!

Well I'm glad to see that you are acknowledging that starving yourself is not a good thing. Because 500 Calories a day is starving yourself. In fact your body is probably digesting your muscle, not your fat, to compensate for the lack of food.  Egg whites and chicken can be a good start to creating a high protein low carb diet, but you should make sure you are eating a healthy balance of all the food groups. In limited amounts, dairy  (milk, yogurt, cottage cheese) is supposed to promote weight loss. I don't pretend to know it all, so I would suggest speaking to a nutritionist at your gym. They might be able to help you put together a sensible workout and diet plan that you can live with. Not the model diet of coke, cigarettes and coffee that half these industry girls are on in order to stay rail thin.

I'm sure you are beautiful just the way you are. Don't let an industry that promotes eating disorders and an unhealthy lifestyle change how you feel about yourself.

Good luck!!

Fitness Exercising to lose weight; but appetite is increasing! Apr 29 2009
21:46 (UTC)

I agree with a few of the others. Obviously your body needs fuel since you are exercising and burining it all up. Try eating foods that are higher in protein and fiber. Cottage cheese, egg whites, peanut butter, and protein shakes w/ milk are all some options you might consider adding to your diet if you haven't already. Be patient. You'll figure out a balanced diet that will work for you, even if it takes a little experimenting.

Good luck!!

Fitness Eating Before and after workouts.... Apr 29 2009
21:39 (UTC)

I was told by several trainers on this site that post workout snacks should consist of high protein liquids, such as a protein shake,  milk(even chocolate milk), or orange juice. Liquids are better for muscle recovery, b/c they are absorbed into the body faster than a solid piece of food. If I can, I usually eat a banana and cottage cheese about 1-2 hours before going to the gym and I drink a protein shake (w/ peanut butter yum!) after my workout.

Protein is great for you. It helps build muscle, and from my personal experience food that has a lot of protein keeps me fuller longer. A lot of my friends who work out a lot, eat a high protein diet and even drink protein shakes.  I don't think you need to worry.

Fitness Is it possible for girls to tone and NOT lose weight? Feb 04 2009
14:00 (UTC)

I agree that weight training will help more with toning then cardio will. And if you really want to be sure, you can always ask a trainer at your gym for advice. My gym even has a nutritionist to educate clients on how to maintain a balanced diet and monitor caloric intake based on your current stats and desired ones. I am personally a big fan of a higher protein diet. It keeps me fuller longer and protein helps build muscle. Good luck!

I am so sick of these trash magazines making real, beautiful, normal women feel bad about their bodies. I am not a celebrity and just like I cannot afford to buy $400 shoes and $2500 purses, I cannot attain a thin toned body when I do not have access to personal chefs, nutritionists and trainers. These women have the time and money to eat right and exercise. And don't be fooled, a lot of them are getting nipped and tucked to keep up with the  competition. And like some of you mentioned, I think some of these Hollywood stick figures are gross. I would prefer my natural curves as opposed to their emaciated bony bodies anyway. I am almost 5'5" and I weigh 128. The most I would even want to lose is 8 lbs. I cannot imagine weighing 105 like Lindsay Lohan. No thank you! I hope the tide starts to change so that curvy, real bodies reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe (size 12) get the attention they deserve.

I was going to recommend applesauce too, but since the recipe already calls for it, it would probably be overkill. I have heard of people using nonfat yogurt in cookie recipes, so that might be a good substitute to try. Part of the fun of cooking is trying new things and mixing it up. Glad your muffins turned out well.

Enjoy!

Weight Loss diet pills.. TELL ME NO!! Jan 27 2009

I personally take a so called "diet pill" simply to curb my appetite. According to the CC quiz,  I am an Excessive Eater. I just cannot do portion control. So if I can curb my appetite so that I can eat healthier, smaller portions and less calories than I am ok with that. I don't get any crazy, shaky, dizzy, nauseous side effects from Atrophex, otherwise I would stop taking it. I am not looking to starve myself, just to stay within a decent range of 1200-1400 cals/day vs 1700-1900 if left to my own devices. I am exercising and working hard, but if I cannot maintain a low calorie, balanced diet b/c I am constantly going over my calorie limit, then it is pointless. I am not recommending that people take "diet pills" nor do I judge anyone for taking them. We all know there are def some pills out there that will do more harm than good, and nobody wants to damage their body just to look good. Each person knows what they feel comfortable with and what works for them. I am happy with my results so far and I hope everyone gets the results they are looking for, with or without the extra help.

Good luck!!!

New Members My story..... Jan 20 2009

I always wished I had a gym buddy too. I finally got my friend to sign up a few months ago, and I think she met me at the gym twice in the 2 months she had the membership. She finally cancelled it because she was so broke. It's a good thing I wasn't relying on her to motivate me, b/c I would have been wasting my time. Sometimes it's better not to have a gym buddy b/c you tend to make excuses not to go if they say they're not going to.  Anyway, I hope you can get yourself back into the routine of going to the gym. You'll really start feeling a lot better once you do.  I'll be making up for a junk food filled weekend by hitting the gym hard for the next 4 days. If you want, check in and let me know how your workouts go this week. I can be your gym buddy all the way in NY:-)

Motivation I can't believe 8 pounds in 11 months... Nov 12 2008

Your weight can fluctuate up to 5 lbs in just 1 day. You're always lighter in the morning than at night, b/c you haven't eaten or retained any water yet. I'm sure the difference from January is not really 8 lbs. Weighing yourself at different times of the day and on different scales, those are variables that could throw the number off. No worries!

Glad to hear that you 2 have been there and can understand my frustration. Hopefully you are right Laury and NOBODY else is seeing my flaws except me. I guess I'm just paranoid, b/c the last thing I would want is to think I look good and have someone crush my spirits by pointing out my problem areas. It's hard not to fixate when you have such an ideal image in your head, but I'll try.

Weight Loss A new way to control how much and what you eat Oct 23 2008

I remember that too. I got my tongue pierced when I was 17 and it hurt like hell even to eat jello. Eating during the healing process sucked, but it def controlled overeating, lol. I did like the way the piercing looked, but it was kind of a pain in the butt overall. I took it out after a few years and sadly I have lost a lot of my sense of taste b/c of it. It must have destroyed some taste buds or something. Lesson learned.

At least you got it out of your system and now realize that it was cooler in theory than in reality. Wink

Health & Support Working out when sick? Sep 25 2008

I have a cough and a terrible headache and body aches. I am not even trying to force myself to work out and make it worse. Working out tears down your body and if you're already feeling under the weather you might not be strong enough to fully recover. Plus, I just read in an article that you are a lot more prone to a respiratotory infection within 48 hours of working out. I want to exercise and look good, but I'm not going to sacrifice my health. The gym can wait a few days. My advice would be to get plenty of sleep and drink plenty of liquids before going full force again. That's what I am doing.

Feel better.

The Lounge Do cheat days really help? Aug 06 2008

I think it's just a preference and what you're motivated by. I personally like the fact that on the weekends I don't calorie count. I give myself the freedom to eat ice cream and pizza and pasta and barbeque (which is mostly protein anyway). And it's funny b/c I eat these things, but I don't go crazy and pig out like you would think, b/c I don't want to ruin my hard work from the whole week. It's just my days that I eat  "junk" food, but in moderation. Don't get me wrong I don't eat only junk on the weekends, but if I'm going to splurge, that's when I do it. I don't think eating healthier is a job, but it definitely requires more planning and willpower than caving in and eating that bag of doritos vs. an apple for a snack. I enjoy some foods that are not typically healthy, and for me, it is unrealistic to phase them out all together. So that's why I do my cheat days. But to me it's just another day, not the highlight of my week or anything. That could be b/c, like you said, my cravings are not as strong as they were before I started eating healthier.

I can totally sympathize. I think sometimes you just get burned out on working out and dieting and counting calories.  It does feel like a chore. Sometimes you need to take a few days off from the gym, or to have a cheat day with food, just to break the monotony. I am going on vacation to Puerto Rico next week and I am totally going to enjoy it! I'm not going to work out or count calories. I've been busting my butt in the gym for 4 months and watching what I eat for 2 months and I deserve a little splurge. I personally just think maybe you're in a little bit of a funk and need a similar pick me up to get you motivated again.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

JLO has enough money to create her own line of clothes to fit her round ass. We are not so lucky, lol. I personally love Hydraulic jeans and ZanaDi jeans. I've had lots of luck with the way they fit me, and my waist to hip difference is like 10 inches, so jeans that fit well are hard to come by .

I have to agree with satyrswoman amd tmck99 on the cottage cheese. I love it. Cottage cheese is really high in protein so it keeps me fuller longer. It's delicious with peaches or pineapples too. Egg whites with turkey are a good source of filling protein as well. Other than that, my weapon for fighting hunger is my protein shake. I mix it with water and half a banana and I'm good to go. Plus it makes a great pre work out snack to fight off the hunger until after the gym.

Welcome to CC.

Weight Loss Eating late Aug 05 2008

My trainer gave me this diet to try out and it says that if you are hungry past 6:30pm, which I will be because I don't get home from the gym until 7:30pm,  to eat only protein. I try not to eat a big dinner, but it's hard not to when I just expended a lot of energy working out. If I do have a decent size meal, I try not to go right to bed. Science or not, I feel like a little piggy doing that. And even if I am hungry again by 10:30 or 11pm I tough it out. That's just me. I make no judgment on anyone who gives in to the urge to eat late night, b/c if it gets bad enough I do too. That's why I try to go to bed early, so I don't have any late night cravings. Because most of the time when I satisfy those cravings, it's not with the proper food, but rather junk like chips, cheese, carbs or something else delicious, lol.

Girl from your mouth to God's ears. I am having that issue with my hamstrings. Trying to get them toned is like asking for a miracle. I have a "meaty" (for lack of a better word) butt and I notice it getting firmer and lifting a little but no fat is going anywhere. So I unfortunately can offer you little help in that department. But I love having a round butt and I would never want it any other way...and neither would my boyfriend. You look good in your pics and nowadays people are paying for the JLO butt. So enjoy your curves, they're free, lol.

Foods different calories in eggs? Aug 05 2008

Really?! I googled the breakdown of eggs and egg whites and that's what it told me. It was some nutrition site don't know the exact name.  I am very upset now. Although 17 cals are not the end of the world, I am bothered I was misinformed. Yep just confirmed it on Incredibleegg.org, 17 cals. Thanks for the info.

I agree with gi jane. That's what I do b/c it's way more accurate. If you really want to cut calories, I recommend egg whites. They have 0 calories!! Since I personally think they are not that delicious, I like to mix egg whites and turkey (lots of protein) or 2 egg whites and 1 whole egg just for a little bit of flavor. Good luck.

Motivation In a contest with a few close friends and looking for people want to go from 140's to about 125-130.... Jul 31 2008

Long time, no post. It seems like over a month since anyone has added to this....including me. As of 2 days ago I am down to 128 lbs, but to be fair, I think I had my starting weight wrong. I was guesstimating about 140lbs, but I know I have not lost 12lbs, so I must have been way off. Anyway I'm still excited, because now my new goal is 120 lbs. I'm going to Puerto Rico in 1 week and a half so I hope to be bikini ready by then.

Any updates from anyone?

Weighed myself yesterday and I'm down to 128!! The best part is I got measured at the gym by my trainer and I've lost 2% body fat in the last 2 months as well as a few inches in my waist and thighs. Wow, counting calories really is the key. Exercise makes you feel good, but if you want to lose the weight, it's all about the diet...unfortunately.

My Puerto Rico vacation is in 2 weeks. I'm getting my bikini body ready!!

I have felt the same way sometimes. It's hard not to become obsessive and overanalyze everything you eat. I agree. I've thought about quitting calorie counting myself(not the web site just doing it), but I guess I haven't gotten fed up enough yet. In the end we shouldn't worry about nitpicking every calorie. As long as you are eating a well balanced diet and enjoying life and you feel good, then who cares?! Go ahead and eat that piece of chocolate cake and enjoy it!! Unless you eat a whole cake to yourself, nothing is really gonna happen anyway. One of the wonderful things calcount has taught me, lol.

Weight Loss Women: How much weight do you gain before & lose after your period? Jul 21 2008

I think between hormones and water retention anything is possible. I have mine right now and I feel so bloated it's disgusting. Although, I never have stepped on a scale to measure the before and after weight loss/gain due to my period.  But you're young, with good metabolism, so an extra pound loss might just be your body burning fat and calories. Enjoy being 18, a pound and a half lighter, and having a fast metabolism. Laughing
