The grilled chicken salad sounds good.  I like avos and chicken on salad! Yum!

Then again... EVERYTHING sounds delicious...

But not everything sounds so "not bad" for you.  As long as it is not covered in some kind of crazy dressing that is.

I do not want to upset anyone, but I have read all the original posts and all of these and I just want to point out a few things.

Some people have tourette's.

Some people have diseases.

Neither tourette's nor diseases make you less of a person.

Cosidering these three facts, I really don't know why everyone has gotten so heated.

OK, I can see not having the toaster oven.  But you really should be able to have a rice cooker, it's only as likely to cause a fire as your computer, and I doubt they ban those.  Like I said before there are tons of things you can make with a rice cooker and tons of sites online for unconventional recipes (like orange szechuan chicken).

You're going to have to either take charge of your own meals by cooking them yourself and just taking a loss on the meal plan, or learn to do the best with what they give you.  They must have a salad bar or sandwich or stir fry station or SOMETHING. You're just not going to get fabulous home cooked meals on campus.

You're going to have to do some serious adopting, but I think making meals yourself is the only way to go.  When I was in school I ate almost solely out of my toaster oven (the school didn't allow toaster ovens, but it also never bothered to look inside the box I hid it under).  Even without a full sized oven you can make a lot of meals for yourself with a few small appliances.  The toaster oven can do fish or chicken breasts or toast, stuff you want to cook with dry heat.  Lots of other stuff you can make in a rice cooker: steam veggies, rice (obviously), oatmeal, soup, pretty much anything that uses wet heat instead of dry (just make sure you get one with a steamer rack so you don't have to boil your veggies).

Honestly, with just a toaster oven and a rice cooker you can make TONS of meals and probably save more money than with a meal plan.

You are a very pretty woman who looks like she takes pride in her appearance.  It seems like what you need more than for other people to find you attractive is for you to find yourself attractive.  I think the best way to get there is to feel like you are doing the best you can for your health.   You have a beautiful baby and you should make sure you are the healthiest you can be so that you can enjoy life with her!  So, my suggestion is this: despite your social anxiety you should really get out as much as you can.  Take your little one for walks in the park, play, enjoy the outdoors and spending time being active.  Not all exercise has to be formal and in this way you will start feeling stronger and better about yourself while teaching your child how great it is to be out and running around instead of inside watching TV or playing video games.  These things may be harder to do depending on what your schedule is, but everyone makes time for the things they find the most important.  You just have to prioritize.

Good luck, and congrats on momdom!

I can totally relate to your feelings about the treadmill.  I am also trying to increase my speed and endurance because I am going on 26 and have never really been cardiovascularly fit.  On the treadmill I can crank the speed up and say "Ok, I am going to jog like this for the next two minutes" and then I am so glad I made it through the two minutes without dying that I add another and another.  Outside I would get bored not knowing my progress and just give up.  Although I am also lucky right now because the gym I use overlooks the ocean so I don't have to jog staring at a wall!

Anyhow!  You are not alone in your love of the treadmill's information display and good for you for focusing on health instead of numbers on a scale.

It may not matter for your weight, but it certainly matters for your health AND your mentality.  If you ate your calorie allowance in chocolate you would end up being without a lot of vitamins and nutrients AND, I'm guessing, very, very hungry.  Obviously we can all make the choice to factor in our favorite foods in moderation, but you still need to make sure you are providing your body with the materials it needs if you want to stay healthy.

Yes, this happens.  People ask me why I am eating tuna salad out of a green pepper "do you have something against carbs??" No, I just think green peppers are tasty! Other people want to know why I would go to the trouble of making oatmeal from oats, nuts, and honey when they obviously have prepackaged envelopes for that.  I think packaged oatmeal is WAY too sweet and even the "low sugar" kinds only have less sugar because it was replaced with some sugar tasting chemical.  I just want it a little less SWEET! Even my husband will get upset from time to time because I will make a delicious dinner, albeit heavy on the veggies, and he will just stare at it "How can you eat this?  Where is the meat?"

She's not pregnant.  She actually asked her doctor for a pregnancy test.  It's possible that certain foods set her off, but it seems like almost ANYTHING, veggies, fruits, toast, even water, can set her off.

She is not purposefully purging, and it's not that her stomach can't handle it, at least not the bulk, she could eat a pea at some point and get sick.

As far as the trauma, I'd just rather not say.  It was purely emotional trauma though.

I just feel like there should be some way to disconnect the emotions from the physical reaction so that being upset doesn't have to mean being unhealthy.

Weight Loss shift worker Jul 21 2009

I have to work this shift from time to time too.  It is definitely tough!  I find that opposed to regular 9-5, where people have more time at night, when I am on the 6pm-6am I tend to have more free time in "the morning" (which ends up being the afternoon.  This is when I cook as much as possible so I don't have to cook again for a while.  I liked to make omelettes for breakfast, and if I can, I make two so I can have one for the next day (they are really fine microwaved!).  Another thing I would do is cook up a bunch of Italian sausages with peppers and onions and saute it all in veggie broth to lessen the fat a bit.  You can break this up into portions and serve over some rice or with a sanwich roll.  It is easy to bring to work and heat up.  Same for stir fries.  I also recommend keeping "emergency" foods in your work if you can.  I would have some sandwich wraps and a can of refried beans for a 1 min easy burrito, or you can buy some veggies to keep in the freezer at work and bring in some packaged noodle soups.  You can use less of the sodium packets and dump a bunch of veggies in before you microwave it.

Hope this helps a bit.

You say you don't buy the food at home, that the food at home is not healthy because healthy is too expensive, and that you rely on fast food.

Running to the supermarket and buying salad fixings and lean meats, or cans of tuna and some sandwich wraps is surely cheaper and better for you than eating at MacDonald's.  If you have enough of your own money to buy fast food, you have enough money to buy something better for you.  Just take the initiative and try to avoid bad for you things just because they're easier to get to.

Also, like other posters said, your "gorcery shopper" needs an education in cost analysis at the grocery store.  Maybe a little "quality versus quantity" could help too.  In the end you may end up paying less in health insurance and medical bills if you put in the initial investment to keep your body healthy.

I was just telling my friend the same thing about Mondays.

I came out to my car this morning to find someone parked next to me, over the line, so close that I could just barely get in my drivers side door.  Of course there is a huge scratch where they opened their door into mine.  So I did it.  I left a note on their car asking them to "Please show some responsibility."

We will see how this ends.

Is it wrong...

that having to deal with people everyday makes me want to walk into the woods somewhere and never come out?

that I would like to have a national reporting service so that I can "tattletale" on people for not using blinkers, sitting in the right hand lane when I want to turn, or smoking in the hallway of a building that is non-smoking?

Mondays are the suck...

I have a rice cooker that I bought for about 25 bucks at Target that has an insert try that you can steam food on.  I didn't buy it for the steam feature, but I definitely use it.  And the book that came with the machine has a chart with steaming times so that you have a general idea how long to cook things.  Veggies are pretty intuitive, but meat can be a bit trickier.  I've cooked dumplings, bean paste buns, chicken, country pork ribs, and it all comes out great.

By the way, I LOVE Red Robin with a fiery passion.  There is a great way to cut calories on the burgers though.  You can ask for the burger on lettuce.  All of the toppings get put on the side and you can have your burger salad and put as much or as little of the toppings on as you like.  PLUS you can ask for melon slices instead of neverending french fries and these can count as your dessert!  Sure the burger itself is still a bit caloric, but it is just as enjoyable (sometimes I think even more so) than having it on the bun and it definitely helps to leave the bun out.  I have nothing against carbs, but have you seen how LOADED with fat the onion rolls are? Oh my goodness...  Those are some greasy buns!

My second favorite option (though also not SUPER calorie conscious) is the half a BLTA and a salad.

In short, Red Robin is really good at letting you do pretty much whatever you want with your meal so feel free to customize to get something you won't feel guilty about.

Foods Egg Whites Jul 14 2009

Neanderthin, I think you must have missed the part where the OP said they didn't LIKE the yolks.  There are lots of healthy things in the world that certain people just don't like to eat.  Would you condemn a person for eating broccoli crowns but avoiding the stalks?  People do it all the time!  Yeah it would be better if everyone liked the whole egg, more nutrition, less waste, yadda yadda, but that's just not the case here.

I still say the yolk shouldn't be thrown out, poor chickens spend their whole lives making eggs just to have the part that takes the most effort to make thrown out.  Very sad.  So I maintain, make something yummy with your yolks!  If you don't want it?  Give it away!  If you are scared you will eat it?  Make a cake or a bread or a pie with it, something that you can't have just a little of (I know I always steal a cookie from a batch I am giving away, but a pie with a slice missing?  that's just not done!).

Weight Loss Do people gain weight but maintain measurements? Jul 13 2009
13:31 (UTC)

Actually, it makes more sense if your weight stayed the same that you could have lost fat in exchange for muscle.  If muscle was replaced by fat you could stay the same weight but have an increase in measurements.  This is why some very fit, very tight bodied people can weigh more than people with larger measurements.

If you don't want to eat egg yolks in the morning maybe you could save them in tupperware or a ziplock bag in the fridge.  I have done this before and used them later in the day to make desserts like creme brulee or some richer cakes or cookies that require more yolk than whole eggs.

Also here is a website that tells you how to store them more long term and also gives you ideas of some recipes that you can make to use egg yolks up.

It really is a shame to waste so many good calories.  But that's just my opinion.

Weight Gain eating minus activities Jul 09 2009

I am not going to tell you how many calories to eat, but if you are saying that you regularly burn 1200 due to activity then yes, you should add that to your BMR in order to determine the BARE MINIMUM you should be consuming to MAINTAIN (although constant activity like this probably means you burn even more daily due to metabolism effects).  In order to gain you would obviously have to eat more than that.  Depending on how low your weight is you may want to talk to a professional dietician in order to find a good weight gain regimen.

Are you trying to gain because you are underweght or are you trying to gain simply because you want to add muscle mass?

I have no idea why you might need a celebrity endorsement on meat, but I HAVE tried bison burger and bison tips and I think both are enormously delicious.  They are better for you than most red meats and even better than some poultry (like dark meat turkey).  They taste beefy and satisfyingly delicious in my opinion, but I would see if you can buy it from a local butcher or at least the local supermarket.  I don't see what Tony Little adds to the package except maybe a bigger price tag.

Why does everyone always think that if someone is concerned about their significant other gaining weight it has to do with attraction?  Everyone now knows how detrimental poor eating habits and extra weight (especially around the midsection) can be.  It is not just disappointing to have someone we love bulk up (or lose an extreme amount of weight) because of how they look, it is scary.  When you love someone you want them to be around as long as possible so that you can be together, and you want that time to be enjoyable.

Sorry, it's true that you can't make someone change for the better, that's not what I'm arguing, I just wanted to point out that caring for someone and trying to make sure they care for themselves doesn't always stem from the physical attraction factor.

You could:

Dip them in super dark, no sugar chocolate.

Cook them down with some other juicy fruit (like peaches), without any sugar, add a little cornstarch to thicken the juice and top them with a rolled oats mixed with a small amount of brown sugar and butter, and bake.

Ok, so that one is not exactly HEALTHY, but you can do tasty baked goods in moderation, just try to keep the bad stuff in check.  I got this great book called Perfect Light Desserts that has a lot of yummy stuff (a ton of it made with fresh fruit) made with real ingredients, but mindful of not overloading the fat and sugar factor.  You should check it out.  So far everything I've made from there has been TASTEEEE!

Hahaha!  You should have tried them when they were still deep fried!

I love their apple pies too.  Really the only thing I ever get at Mickey D's.

They are still really tasty, but they seem to have less filling now and they used to be freshly deep fried for you so that everything was hot and crispy and ridiculous.  Yeah, it was excessive, and I'm not even one for fried food, but the crispy sugary shell filled with the gooey sweet apples was just irresistible.

The Lounge Would you intervene if you thought someone was close to cheating? Jun 29 2009
19:30 (UTC)

I'm glad Future said something.  I think one reason people act like jerks to others is that they think no one will call them on it.  I've actually had someone tell me stories of how awful their friends treat women and when I say they don't sound like very good people he responded "No, they are, they're great people, they just never think of other people's feelings"  Hmmm....

You can't take responsibility for what people do to hurt each other, but you sure as heck have the right to call them out on it.  Even in situations when someone isn't being purposefully malicious others can get hurt and I don't think there is anything wrong with letting someone know that.  Even if he doesn't intend to cheat he should know how his association appears.  That way if he really is innocent he could either stop talking to his ex, or he could talk to his wife and reassure her somehow.  It's the things that go unsaid that drive people mad.  Imagine he's not cheating and won't but his wife goes crazy thinking he is, looking at his cell phone logs, reading his emails, accusing him of stuff, it could ruin the marriage either way.  Now that he knows other people see what could be going on, the ball's in his court.

Aqua, your post made me smile :-)

I think the point is that no matter what you look like, no matter how you act or what you do, there is always going to be someone telling you that whatever it is is wrong.  Maybe it's a good opportunity to examine ourselves and reevaluate (like with the professor pointing out your passive sentences), or maybe it's a good opportunity to realize that it doesn't always matter what other people think because sometimes YOU'RE right and THEY'RE wrong.

I actually had a coworker stop me the other day because I was whistling and he apparently didn't think females should whistle.  He actually said "Woah, a girl?  Whistling?" I asked him if he thought there was something wrong with that and he pinched up his face and said "Well it IS a little ODD isn't it?" (though he said it as a statement more than a question).

But you can rest assured that I will continue to whistle and apparently drive old men batty.
