Weight Loss How long have you been on "your journey" or "new lifestyle"? Nov 20 2009
20:34 (UTC)
11

Started May '08 at 226.  Today I am at 155.  My goal is 149.  Have been at 155 forever!  Well it just feels like forever, it was really about May.  So I am technically still trying to lose, but in reality been maintaining for the last six months.

I do read the boards and see that women my height (5'5") have much lower goal weights.  I am currently fitting into a six 6/8 and have no ambition to be a perfect size zero.  I'm wondering how everyone determined what their goal weight should be.  I just wanted to be at a healthy bmi for the first time in 20 years!

I had a big lunch

I'm going out to dinner later and don't want to spoil my appetite

My stomach is hurting (that one is fail safe because no one wants to know any more information than that)

I don't like chocolate cake (or vanilla, or whatever it is)

I'm watching my sugar intake for health reasons

Welcome Nneka!  So glad that you decided to join CC.  It has been a great help to me in my own weight loss journey.  It sounds like you feel that you have a big task in front of you.

For me, it was easier to incorporate small changes that I could live with and get used to rather than changing everything all at once.  So I started by cutting out soda.  When I was able to do that, I started taking a walk around the block after dinner, and so on.

You can do this!  You can!  Welcome to CC!

135 asap.  Is that the goal weight you would like to get to?  I can completely relate to your post.  When I started in May '08, I was a size 18 (pushing 20) and weighed 226 pounds.  I did the same kind of things you described, extra cheese on the burger BUT a chocolate shake instead of a coke.

So the good news is that you have already done the hardest part, admitting that you really need to change your lifestyle.  A few things really helped me on my journey and I wanted to share them with you:

  • Start small.  I made one small change at a time.  So first I cut out soda.  When I was able to do that, I decided to go for a walk after dinner.  And so on.  By taking small steps, I didn't get overwhelmed with changing everything all at once.
  • Find support.  There are so many wonderful people here on CC.  They have been an instrumental part of my own weight loss.  They cheer me on, help me get it together when I mess up and are very inspirational.
  • Prepare your own food.  I cannot tell you how much this one helped me.  In the beginning I ate breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks from my stash at home.  No fast food at all.  This really helped to keep me accountable with my calorie goals.  My husband ended up losing 10 pounds too!

Remember, you can do this.  You can!  I have added you as a buddy in case you ever want to chat.

Terri

The Lounge Got laid off...AND training my replacement! Nov 13 2009

In the State of California there are many labor laws in place to protect workers.  Technically speaking, if you are being "laid off", your employer may not hire a replacement until a six month period has elapsed.

If a replacement has already been hired, I hate to break it to you, but you are being terminated.  Is there a possibility that you are being terminated for reasons other than your schedule?  Such as race, gender, age, etc.  If so, you may have a legal case and I suggest you consult with an employment attorney.  Longevity will also play a part in this story.

Sometimes small employers want to fire someone, for whatever reason, and think it will be easier if they use the excuse of "laying someone off" so they don't have to deal with hurting someones feelings.  It would be much easier for them to call a spade a spade.

Also, you may be eligible for unemployment insurance.  Check with your local EDD office.

No tips on the turkey yet?

I cook my turkey in an oven bag (stuffed of course).  I add chicken broth in the bag to keep the turkey moist.  And, my secret tip, place strips of thick sliced bacon over the breast and legs to prevent them from becoming too brown.  Remove the bacon when the turkey has about an hour left to cook.

Why didn't they show any current pictures of Shay?

The end of the show was all about Daniel.  I was happy to read that he has a girlfriend that he is bringing to the finale.  So sad about his friend Dave (former partner).

Congrats on your success.  Until I started my own weight loss efforts, I never realized all of the misconceptions and bad information out there about how to lose weight.  You know, the lose 30 pounds in three weeks kind of stuff.

I'm so glad that you are putting the information out there about the right way to do it.  I too have lost 70 pounds, going from 226 to 155.  It took me a year and a half, but I did it!

Calorie Count Worried about the holidays... Nov 06 2009

Every year my mother and I make about 50 dozen homemade cookies to give away as Christmas gifts.  Talk about temptation!!  So instead of skipping the tradition all together, I allow myself to have three or four of my favorite kinds (we make about 8 different ones, pecan balls are the hands down favorite) and then I chew LOTS of sugar free gum to keep my mouth busy.

My MIL and I make homemade tamales for the family to enjoy on Christmas Eve.  Another temptation.  Again, I allow myself to have one (or sometimes two) and move on.

After all, what would Christmas be without home made cookies and tamales?  Miserable!!  The Halloween candy is killing me though!

I have found myself involved in conversations just like the ones described here.  People making jokes or snide comments about other people due to their physical appearance.

My response, "you know, my mother is ______" insert the appropriate entry here, fat, old, republican, hispanic, african american, asian, catholic, jewish, etc.

The trick is you have to say it with a deadpan face.  I wish I had a camera to catch the reaction of some of the people I've done that to.

In most cases, they learn the lesson.  You never know who you are speaking to, so if you are going to spew out a bunch of idiotic rhetoric, just shut up.

I think Tracy started around 235?  So if she lost 85 that would make her around 150?  She still looked like she needed to lose a bit more imo.  I wonder if she is just short?

I agree with jafried, Liz and Shay next.  But oh no, not Daniel!  I want him to win.  Either him, Danny or Allen.  I like all three.  Everyone else, ugh!

I finished one in September at 36 minutes, which is a great time for me!  I've been able to improve that time over the last two months by a whole minute.  I guess it doesn't really matter what others are doing as I like to compete against myself!

Somehow I don't mind Liz being annoying. IMO, Shay is way more annoying with her whole pity me party.  Yes, I realize she has had a really terrible time but she needs to grow up and move on.  Abby had something much worse happen to her and she was able to suck it up and move on.  Move on Shay.

I think Danny may win the whole thing.  Or perhaps Allen...

Oh Abby, why did you have to throw yourself under the bus???

I almost couldn't handle all the emotional baggage last night.  Between Shay and Abby I just wanted to turn it off.  Oh, and why oh why isn't Dan losing any weight?

Anyone had an opportunity to watch Diet Tribe?  Five female friends trying to lose 50 pounds is 16 weeks.  Still an aggressive goal, but a much more realistic one.  Personal trainer, nutritionist and therapist provided.

Welcome to CC!  I can completely relate to you because I started CC at 226.  I'm 5'5" and a lot older but still needed to lose a lot.  The good news is that it can be done.  The better news, you already did the hardest part, realizing that you need to make a change and deciding to do something about it!

It was really daunting to me to think about the sheer amount of weight I needed to lose, so I started with a goal to lose 10 pounds.  Instead of trying to incorporate everything at one time, I started with one thing at a time.  First thing, cut out fast food.  It was hard, but once I started preparing my own food, it really opened my eyes to how poorly I was eating.

Next I decided to take a walk after dinner.  Nothing too strenuous, just a few blocks.

I would highly recommend breaking your weight loss into little steps like this.  Mentally it is much easier to wrap your head around than, I need to lose 90 pounds.

I've been around for a while and am not planning on leaving anytime soon because I still have work to do.  Feel free to add me as a friend and let me know if you need anything.

I assume you have a job?  If so, ask if they have a credit union.  Sometimes you have to pay a small initiation fee but they offer really good rates.

If you walk into the dealer with your own financing, you will most definitely get a better deal.  The other thing you may have to be prepared for is a larger down payment.  Generally if you have little/no credit history or bad credit, you may be expected to put as much as 20% down.

Other than those options, perhpas hit your rich uncle up for the money!  Good luck!

I read an article about Helen (last season's winner).  She said for three weeks prior to the finale, she lived on asparagus and sugar free jello pudding.  That's it.  I think that is why many put some of the weight back on.  No one can survive on asparagus and jello forever!
