Weight Loss i diet and still gain weight!!!! May 13 2009

It's hard at first, many people don't realize how much they actually eat in a day.  If your consuming the proper amount of calories and doing the excercise you say, it could be several months before you really see a difference.

If your wight lifting you should expect your weight to go up, especially over the first month or two, don't listen strictly to the scale.  The things you'll notice is clothing feeling more loose, more energy, that's how you can tell if it's working.  The problem that so many dieters fail, is they expect too much to quick.  It could take 2-3 months to see a difference, not just 2-3 weeks.  And for many people, their weight can fluctuate up to 5lbs a day!  Especially for strenght training where your muscles store fluids after a workout.  Long story short don't pay strict attention to the scale, and give it time.

Well I have to say I appreciate the advice, I am enrolled in MSU, starting my 2nd year this summer.  Unfortunatley I live in a rural area, and have to commute through 30 miles of wheat fields and cow country to even get to town.  I've been considering trying to get a membership for a gym, the only thing stopping me right now is not having much if any extra money every month.  This isn't a new struggle, I've fought my inner (intraverted) self for years, I was just hoping weight loss would give me the confidence I couldn't give myself.....WRONG.  I dunno i'll just try to figure something out, again thanks for the advice.

The Meaning in the advice is good, but I just don't have any relationships to work on, due to many changes in my life in the last couple years I don't have any social networks in my local area, friends or otherwise.

And to anyone that glances at this, don't try to diet for any reason other than just for your personal health, cause no other reason will get you anywhere.

Fitness Running advice Apr 24 2009

I started on this site about a year ago, at 250lbs i couldn't jog a half mile without stopping.  I hated running because i couldn't do it, consequently i quit for a while, i took up cycling till i could get my heart and lungs built up a bit.  One day I decided i'd try to run again, i did 3/4 a mile.  Long story short i just did what i could, ran a half mile or 3/4 mile, walked and jogged as much as i could back.  I'm still not a strong runner, i'm not fast and i can't run 10 miles, but any given day I feel confident to do at least 2 within army qual times.  So the best advice i can give you is just do you feel comfortable with, if you run 5min, thats better than 4.  Run your 5 mins, then just walk, if you don't enjoy your exercise your going to give up on it.  Then every time you run just try to run a little farther, a little longer.

Sorry for the long speal but good luck!

Maintaining What exactly am I? Feb 02 2009

What i've got is actually a "fat roll" I found an article

http://www.bodyfatguide.com/LooseSkin.htm

that gives some good information on the subject.  And it would seem to make sence considering the ammount of weight loss, and how quickly i lost it.

I realize now that i have a couple emotional deamons to face first, but with any luck i'll be able to resume a normal lifestyle and seems that strength training win a "normal" diet at this point would be the best solution.  Unless anyone else can help me with any better ideas, or support?

I know it's hard Diet Mountian Dew addict here <----  At times i would drink anywhere from 2-4 Liters a day.  The only thing thats cutting me back is budget, it's to expensive anymore.  One thing thats healthy is always keep a bottle of COLD!! water close at hand.  I freeze it until there's ice chunks in it, then sip on it all day long, it helps kurb the drinking, but cold turkey isn't the answer either, have some, just fill the spaces with healthy water.

Fitness Walking in the cold burns a ton of calories! Nov 04 2008

I'm to tired right now to find the study's and letters from doctors of medicine, but if you do some research on fat loss and calories burned, one of the largest usages of calories in the average human is thermogenics.  The calories to burned to produce blood flow and heat.  Examples of proven studies, people tend to burn more calories when they are in colder environments the "shivver" effect, muscles tremor and flex to induce blood flow and warm the bodyl.  Drinking cold fluids, such as ice water, have proven to burn more calories than room temperature water.  Both for the same reason your body is working harder to stay cool.

I have to say thank you for the information.  I've been doing distance running for so long now, i have to spend an hour running just to get any effect.  I've also noticed i don't get the endorphin high i used to.  I really think i'm gonna throw HIIT into my training routein along with the distance runs.   Again thank you!

Thanks for some of the ideas, the problem with wieght lifting is i'm not a member of a gym and even if i was, the nearest one is 20mi away.  And yes I think i can say we have snow, but it's just starting usually though it doesn't stick for the whole winter except in the mountains.  I'll try to keep running but I need to figure out a place to do jumping jacks or something like that.

I had this problem in High School while weight lifting, a literal head splitting pain that comes suddenly, no pain killers numb it, and it you just have to wait for it to go away.  I understand, in fact I went to see a doctor about it, the only thing they told me was similar, it was probably muscle tension or emotional stress they just put me on ibuprofin (spelling) for 2 weeks and told me absolutley no strenuous excersice.  It was to the point i couldn't even do a push-up without the pain, my recommendation other than the stretching mentioned above is to take a week or two off, let your muscles and your mind relax.  If it persists though, i really would go to a doctor, sometimes it could be a sign of something more serious.

Only one way to find out.... if it works let me know, i've also heard of people adding fresh squeezed OJ to it for the extra vitamins.  Really, if you find out it works i just may do it too, i been using eggo waffles with sugar free syrup, pancakes would be a nice change.

Let me put it from a guys perspective, if he's helping, maybe he's just kind honeslty thats how i am.  But if you feel him looking at you, depending on how he's doing it, I would just take it as a compliment if I were you.  If he's oggling you "undressing you with his eyes" to a weird point thats making you uncomfortable then you should say something.  But if he's just glancing (trust me sometimes it just unconcious) take it as a compliment.  Since i don't know the person i can't really say their intentions, but not all men only think with one head, some are HONEST, and some are truly just kind.

it's ok to eat over your goal ammount once in a while, actually it's even healthy, it keeps your body guessing, i'd say as long as you just try to eat healthy foods, not a lot of carbs, you should be fine.

Not stupid, not even in the least, i do stuff like this all the time, i only did the hotel thing once ( to expensive on a college buget, i know) i stayed in my own room, ordered a pizza ( i live in a small town this was amazement to me,) but what i usually do is go up to the mountains, camp by a stream no one knows about, off the road, not in a campground.  Everyone need's there alone time, just how we get it is uniuqe.

Weight Loss Diet drugs Aug 23 2008

Ok i'm not a doctor, and I don't work for any drug companies.  I've been on Hydroxycut Hardcore for 4-5 months, I eat good and excersice in someway or another almost every single day.  I dropped 45 lbs in that time, i've been off for about 3 weeks now (couldn't afford it anymore price of food is going up to much), and guess what..... wait for it..... i'm continuing to loose weight at exactly the same rate I was while taking the weight loss pills.  My weight log graph hasn't changed even in the slightest since I stopped taking it.  Now does it work, i can't say no, cause i dropped a lot of weight in a short time with it.  But i was also exercising my butt off in that time, i'd say weigh the cost and look again.  But no pill is going to make you loose weight, just keep doing what your doing and it'll come, remember when you first start to diet and excercise, fat is going to be replaced by muscle, you might even go up a little at first.

Foods Carbs Aug 16 2008

I actually just had a chat with my doctor about this one, carbs (regardless of what type of carbs they are) turn into sugar (glucose) in the body.  Things like potatoes, corn and other starches are the same way.  A lot of people that have a family history of diabetes try so stay away from carbs, due to the effect the sugar has on the system.  Now carbs aren't bad, as was stated earlier, they are the main source of energy for the body, protein helps build muscle, and carbs are what fuels the body, and the only thing that run's the brain.  If you work out, run, lift weights, really do any cardio (even walking) some of the excess carbs (sugar) held by your body's organs is burned up.  In some people this can lead to a craving for more carbs, but it's ok if their being used.  Usually the recommended ammount for active people is no more than 65% carbs per day, though this number varies from person to person, and from day to day, depending on your activity.  The really only way to help is to eat more vegetables, the natural sugar in fruits is just another form of carbs so veggies are good.  If you don't mind eating lean meat or fish, it's a great source of protein and it can help curb those carb cravings too.

As for the amount of protein you should be getting daily...  Since you're lifting weights, for every pound you weigh you should be consuming one gram of protein.

I'd like to see where your getting this info, i'm not saying your wrong but that seems like alot of protein, if it's true i need more protein in my diet as well.

well I'm a big built person, I have a good bit of muscle mass, large boned (my wrist is 7in circumference) according to this site my BMR is around 3k cal (I have it set at light activity), I don't know what HRM is though? I don't believe i could really be burning 3k cal, or say 3.5 - 4k on a workout intense day. The other thing i don't understand is how to really calculate how much I burn during exercise, say on a bike ride if i go by the speed on average it's considered a moderate difficulty workout, but except for the up part of the hills, the ride doesn't seem to vigorous to me. This whole weight loss is almost more pain and difficulty than it's worth.

PowerBar Protein Plus, they've been my lunch for about the last 3 months, until recently, with the economy the way it is and the price of everything going up I had to cut them out due to my tightening budget.  They taste great they're filling, and I had successful weight loss with them, between 35 and 40 lbs.

Weight Loss What is the typical daily percentage of carbs per day? Jul 18 2008
23:03 (UTC)

You actually just made me look at mine, I think it's based on exercise and muscle mass as to how much protein you need, most things I've read say around 20% fat 30% protein and 50% carbs, though personally over the last month i'm at 15% fat, 25% protein and 60% carbs.  As someone above said i don't buy into the low carb diets either. I've lost 35lbs on this diet so far so it's based more on your personal needs than any % a scientist says you need.

Weight Loss Advice?? Jul 15 2008

well I'm 20, i eat around 2k cal a day, and this plateau is actually just about 2 weeks, but i have a question on

(After a couple of days take your deficit to no more than 700 ongoing)

are you saying to go to 3k cal a day (thats supposed to be my maintenance according to this site) for a while then only have a 700 cal deficit.

I'm kind of similar, though I do drink a lot of water, I eat processed foods, cans of chili, lean pockets, whole grain breads, and I love pasta.  But I believe that with exercise the extra carbs aren't bad, neither is the extra salt in most processed foods.  With how much sodium you loose sweating during a workout I think it's actually a good thing.  I learned in basic, when your sweat has no salt taste left..... sodium = healthy.
